MESSAGE FROM OUR MENAHELMESSAGE FROM OUR MENAHEL
Last week’s Hachnasas Sefer Torah was a beau ful celebra on and a שמחת תורה that all in a endance will remember forever. B”H, the combina on of wri ng a sefer Torah and dancing together באחדות in a Yeshiva environment made it a most unique and
awesome experience. A story comes to mind that I heard from Rabbi Israel Spira, zt”l, Rebbe of Bluzov, at a Siyum HaShas at Manha an center quite a few years ago. It took place in a concentra-on camp on ג“שבט תש‘ ז . Rabbi Spira was assigned forced labor in the forest near the Yanovska camp. Suddenly one of the guards approached him and placed a short le er in his hand sent to him by a Jew just moments before being taken to the gas chamber.
(The Jew had paid the guard $300 to deliver the le er to the Rebbe.) The le er read as follows:
Dear Rabbi Spira, שליטא: The Germans are gathering 800 of us now and are ready to destroy us. The Nazis, ש“ימ , are not sure whether they will shoot us to death or gas us. I am pleading with you that when you step foot in the holy land of Israel a er the war,
please take the enclosed $50 and use it to write an אות in a ספר תורה as a remembrance of my wife and myself. My wife was executed yesterday and they are
ready to take me now, so I must hurry. I will send special regards to your holy ancestors and plead with them for you to be זוכה to אריכת ימים ושנים. Signed, בן לאה‘ ארי
Rabbi Spira held onto this le er and took the first opportunity, when he arrived in
America, to read it to all those who came to greet him. My father, ל“ז , was among the crowd as the Rebbe described the thoughts of a holy Yid just moments before he died
.על קידוש השםMay we be זוכה to celebrate many כתיבות ספרי תורה such as the one we experienced at YBH, sponsored by the Feigin family. May the זכרון of בן לאה‘ ארי and his family be a
lesson to us all on how to live על קידוש השם and to appreciate the living Torah that we are privileged to learn and follow in our daily lives.

HACHNOSAS SEFER TORAH
WRITING OF THE SEFER TORAH
The talmidim par cipated in the wri ng of the sefer Torah as each class accompanied their rebbe to the wri ng of
the final le ers. It was a memorable
chinuch experience for all the talmidim.
Mrs. Paul’s Fi h Grade Class: 5B has been focusing on wri ng as a process that requires sever-al dra s to produce a well wri en ar cle. The boys recently wrote five paragraph essays for Thanksgiving. The first step was brainstorming what they were thankful for. Then they chose three concepts to elaborate on and using a graphic organizer, they compiled details to go with their chosen topics. A er their first dra was edited, their second dra incorporated edits made to the first dra . This dra was edited again in small group reviews. Lastly, they wrote a final version using their best hand-wri ng. The results were fabulous!
Mrs. Kwestel’s son, Adam, spoke to the boys about his
experiences as a lone soldier in the IDF.
Rabbi Wieder’s Science Lab: 2B learned about an aqua‐
terra column, a self contained environment in which to grow plants using recycled water. The boys then grew bean
plants in their own aqua‐terra columns.
Ms. Benaroya’s Fourth Grade Class: The boys are building on their reading and wri ng skills. We are currently reading mysteries and exploring elements of character and plot. Reading 'Encyclopedia Brown' in our textbooks gave the boys the opportunity to learn about conflict, rising ac on and resolu on. They are wri ng expanded sentences, acquiring edi ng skills as they revise their work based on peer review. The mystery wri ng project will be crea ng puzzles, with the culmina ng experience of role playing as detec ves to piece the clues together to solve each others' puzzles.
A Peek Into Our Week: ECD HIGHLIGHTS
ECD HIGHLIGHTS “ה ”

The kindergarteners had the special treat of a visit from Mr. Mayer (Chanoch’s
daddy) and Mr. Jaffe (Ella’s daddy) with the Hatzolah ambulance. They enjoyed an informa ve tour of the ambulance and learned all about the work Hatzolah does for us. The en re ECD had the privilege of giving all the tzedaka they had been col‐lec ng to help purchase supplies (or gas) that is needed. Tizku L’mitzvos!
Chanukah fes vi es are in full
swing now that Chodesh Kislev is here! Thank you to
Mrs. Elana Greenspan (Boaz’s mommy) for visi ng on Rosh Chodesh to play guitar and sing songs with the children. The fes ve atmosphere filled the air as the children sang and danced to their favorite
Chanukah songs.
Rabbi Schonfeld’s Kitah Ches: It's been a very busy few weeks in 8B. In Gemara, the talmidim have been preparing for their high school/mesivta bechinos with farhers with Rabbi Leiner. During Chumash, the boys prepared פסוקים on their own and then taught them to the rest of the class. They present-ed their prepared lessons in skit format which were enjoyed by all. We have been exploring hilchos borer in depth and analyzing various shailos that may arise on any given Shabbos. The talmidim of 8B will perform a shiur/skit on hilchos borer shortly.
