Dear CIU Members and Industry Colleagues:
Welcome to this, the 24th Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Institute of Underwriters inthe beautiful city of Montréal!
Our Convention Secretary, Richard Camiré, our Vice-Chair, Bill Marschall, along with theassistance of the entire CIU 2010 Executive Committee, have worked diligently throughout thispast year to ensure that your annual meeting experience will be as valuable and enjoyable aspossible. Our speakers have graciously worked with us to incorporate into our program theFrench language and culture that is so strongly represented in our CIU membership.
We believe that you will agree that the many challenges of this past year have resulted in a“Tsunami of Change” in both the financial sector as a whole, and more specifically in theinsurance industry. These changes have acted as positive catalyst in our efforts to presentanother exceptional CIU AGM Program. We trust that our valued industry speakers, coupledwith insightful motivational speakers, with their timely presentations, will engage, educate andinspire you.

This lecture will provide an overview of the malignant lymphomas, which includeHodgkin's disease and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The origins and naturalhistories of these malignancies will be explained, as will the modern treatmentapproaches.
Emphasis will be placed on mortality studies, providing mortality ratios for the many differentcellular types. Based on an appreciation of the mortality risk, an approach to underwriting willbe provided.
At the conclusion of this lecture, underwriters will be more familiar with these complex cancersand therefore more confident in providing a mortality assessment.

Rubin Becker, MD, FRCP(C)
Dr. Becker is a Montreal-based expert in geriatric and internal medicine. He holdsnumerous medical appointments including: Montreal Jewish General Hospital’sDivision Chief of Internal Medicine, Chief of Medicine at the Jewish Rehabil itationHospital, and Associate Professor of Medicine at McGill University.
Marc-André Belzil, FSA, FCIA, AALU
Marc-André Belzil est Vice-président adjoint, Développement et Recherche avecRGA Canada et dét ient un baccalauréat en mathématiques de l’Université deMontréal et un baccalauréat en psychologie de l ’université d’Ottawa. I l compte 19ans d’expérience en assurance-vie individuelle dans des postes liés à latarif ication et évaluation de passif actuariel.
Avant de se joindre à RGA en 2002, Marc-André a travaillé pour une largecompagnie multinationale. Ses rôles chez RGA consistent principalement à latarif ication de solutions de réassurance vie et à la recherche.
Marc-André is Assistant Vice President, Development and Reseach at RGA LifeReinsurance Company of Canada. He graduated from the University of Montréal in1991 with a bachelor degree in Mathematics. He also has a bachelor degree inPsychology from Ottawa University.
He has 19 years experience in individual li fe insurance, in corporate actuarial andpricing roles. Prior to joining RGA in 2002, Marc-André worked for a largemultinational l ife insurance company in Ottawa. His work at RGA consists ofdeveloping reinsurance solutions for clients and working on research projects.
Maurice Godin, MD, FRCP(C)
A graduate of Laval University, Dr. Godin is certif ied in Internal Medicine andCardiology. He has been with RGA Canada since the very beginning and is nowtheir Medical Director based in Montréal.

Mary Grant, FSA, FCIA
Mary Grant, FSA, FCIA is Vice President, and Chief Financial Off icer, CanadianIndividual Insurance, Manulife Finanacial.
Ms. Grant began her career with Manulife Financial in 1976 as an ActuarialStudent in the Corporate Actuarial area. In 1979 she was promoted to AssistantActuary for the Canadian Individual Operations area.
In 1982, Ms. Grant returned to the Corporate Financial area as an Actuary and in1986, was promoted to Assistant Vice President of that department.
In 1990, Ms. Grant was appointed to the posit ion of Reinsurance Vice Presidentand Chief Financial Off icer for Manulife’s Reinsurance Division. Four years latershe was appointed to the posit ion of Vice President and Chief Financial Off icer forManulife’s Canadian Division.
In August 2002, Ms. Grant was appointed to her current posit ion of Vice Presidentand Chief Financial Off icer Canadian Individual Insurance.
Ms. Grant holds a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) degree from the Universityof Toronto and is a member of the Society of Actuaries, Chicago, and theCanadian Institute of Actuaries.
Mark Koenig, FALU, FLMI
Mark obtained a graduate degree in Exercise Physiology from the University ofKansas and has completed his FALU and FLMI. He spent 15 years underwriting inthe Brokerage and Reinsurance market in the United States. Mark has presentedat many industry meetings on topics ranging from workf low to hazardous sports.
Mark is current ly AVP, Chief Underwriter for Sun Life Reinsurance. He has beenin Canada for only two and a half years, so please excuse his accent.
Everett Kunzelman, FLMI, ACS
Everett (Ev) Kunzelman is Vice President of Life New Business and ChiefUnderwriter for Jackson National Life Insurance Company (Jackson) and JacksonNational Life of New York. Ev joined Jackson in 1987 and was promoted toAssistant Vice President of Underwrit ing. In 1991, he accepted a posit ion atConseco, Inc., but returned to Jackson in 1996. Ev has also held underwrit ingand management posit ions at American States Life Insurance Company andIndianapolis Life Insurance Company.
Ev earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts with honors from Indiana University.He also holds designations of Fellow, Life Management Institute, and Associate,Customer Service from the Life Off ice Manager Association and is a FINRAregistered principal. Ev is a member of two national study groups on riskassessment and two Society of Actuaries task forces, one on preferredunderwrit ing and one on underwrit ing requirement surveys.
Ev is on the Executive Council of the AHOU and was responsible for programs inMiami (2008) and New York City (2009).
Ev is currently the Executive Vice President of AHOU for the 2010 meeting andwill be President for the 2011 meeting.
Ev lives with his wife, Amy, her two children (Lauren and Cody) and Izzy andMaya, the Golden Doodles, and has two daughters (Lori and Amy) who reside inIndianapolis. His interests include basketball, hiking, wildlife and the environment.
Stephen Lewis
Stephen Lewis is a Professor in Global Health in the Faculty of Social Sciences at
McMaster University. He is Chair of the board of the Stephen Lewis Foundation
(www.stephenlewisfoundation.org), which is dedicated to turning the tide of
HIV/AIDS in Africa. He is Co-Director of AIDS-Free World in the United States.
Mr. Lewis is a member of the Board of Directors of the Clinton Health Access
Init iative and the International AIDS Vaccine Init iative.
Stephen Lewis’ work with the United Nations spanned more than two decades. He
was the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa from June
2001 until the end of 2006. From 1995 to 1999, Mr. Lewis was Deputy Executive
Director of UNICEF at the organization’s global headquarters in New York. From
1984 through 1988, Stephen Lewis was Canada’s Ambassador to the United
Nations.
Mr. Lewis was an elected member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly f rom 1963
to 1978. In 1970, he became leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party, during
which time he became leader of the Off icial Opposit ion.
Mr. Lewis is the author of the best-selling book, Race Against Time.
He holds 30 honorary degrees from Canadian universit ies and is a Companion of
the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest honour for lifet ime achievement. Mr. Lewis
was awarded the Pearson Peace Medal in 2004 by the United Nations Association
in Canada; the award celebrates outstanding achievement in the field of
international service and understanding.
In 2007, the Kingdom of Lesotho (a small mountainous country in Southern Africa)
invested Mr. Lewis as Knight Commander of the Most Dignif ied Order of
Moshoeshoe. The order is named for the founder of Lesotho; the knighthood is the
country’s highest honour.
Tim Meagher, MB, FRCP(C), FACP, FRCP(I)
Dr. Tim Meagher is a graduate of the National University of Ireland. His present
posit ion is Associate Director General, Medical Af fairs at the McGill University
Health Centre. Beyond his hospital and university duties, Dr. Meagher has spent
more than 20 years consult ing in the life insurance industry. He is presently
Consulting Canadian Medical Director at ExamOne Canada and Medical Director,
Munich Re Insurance. Dr. Meagher has had a career-long interest in medical
education at both University level and in the corporate world. He has made many
presentations at educational meetings for brokers, underwriters and physicians in
both Canada and abroad.

Loraine Oman-Ganes MD, FRCP( C),CCMG,FACMG
Loraine Oman-Ganes is the Chief Medical Director of RBC Life Insurance
Company. She is a board-certif ied clinical geneticist and pediatrician, who
completed her B.Sc.(Biology), M.D. and pediatr ic residency at the University of
Saskatchewan, and her fellowship in Clinical Genetics at the University of
Michigan. She has worked in academic, hospital-based, and community practice
settings: as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Genetics at New York Medical
College in Westchester County Medical Center, NY, a staff clinical geneticist at
North York General Hospital in Toronto, and her own community-based clinical
genetics practice in Toronto. She developed the init ial preventative genetics
program (“Medcan Genetics”) at the Medcan Clinic in Toronto. She has provided
the full range of genetic testing from classical genetics to genomics, including
pharmacogenetic testing.
Her focus is bringing the most advanced, personalized, genetics knowledge to
communities of all types, to optimize health. Her goal is to enhance
communication and knowledge sharing between the genetics community and
insurance industry.
Dr. Oman-Ganes' passions include public education about genetics and science,
as well as addressing educational needs of underserved communities, and
enhancing international collaborative science education efforts of academia,
industry, and government, particularly in the U.S. She was the Chair of the
American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) Information and Education
committee, coordinated several projects including ASHG’s “Science Education
Summit” in Bethesda, MD.
Dr. Oman-Ganes has given numerous presentations and interactive workshops in
North America for professionals, students at all levels, and the public. She was a
board member of the Genetic Alliance, which represents over 7 mil lion people with
genetic conditions worldwide, and head judge for the past six years for the
Biotechnology Institute’s Genzyme Life Technologies Biotech Educator Award,
which selected the top biotechnology high school teacher in North America. She
represented the 8,000 members of ASHG as their sole member of the Board of
Directors of FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology),
based in Bethesda, MD. FASEB is the largest coalit ion of biomedical associations
in the United States, representing 23 member societies and more than 84,000
members. Dr. Oman-Ganes is the Scient if ic Chair of the 2010 CLIMOA meeting,
and the incoming CLIMOA president.
Passionate in her commitment to mentorship, education and she holds the belief
that genetics can be used as a tool to enhance literacy and health.
Louise Pilot, MD, MPH, PhD
Dr. Louise Pilote is a Professor of Medicine at McGill University and the Director
of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the McGill University Health
Centre. She holds a James McGill Chair at McGill University and a research
scholarship from the Fonds de Recherche en Santé du Quebec. She is a
practicing Internist and Epidemiologist at the Montreal General Hospital. Dr. Pilote
received her MDCM from McGill University. She then obtained an MPH from the
Harvard School of Public Health and a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of
California at Berkeley.
Dr. Pilote's interests include cardiovascular epidemiology, outcomes research,
and health services research. She is the PI for the GENESIS: an intercapacity
enhancement team on gender and sex determinants of cardiovascular diseases
funded by CIHR and the Heart and Stroke Foundation as well other studies related
to access to care for pat ients wi th congest ive hear t fa i lure , and
pharmacoepidemiology studies of cardiac medications. She is also the lead
investigator of the PRAXY (premature acute coronary syndrome in women and
men) study, a large cohort study of patients with premature ACS.
She is a mother of 5 children.
Stephen Szikora, BA, BSc, LLB, MBA, LLM
Stephen is a lawyer, specializing in tax and estate planning. Having completed
two undergraduate degrees at the University of Guelph, Stephen attended
Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and has completed graduate degrees
in business at Wilf r id Laurier University and tax law at York University.
For the past 13 years, Stephen has worked in the life insurance industry,
supporting advisors and their clients. In his current role as Director of Advanced
Planning with Sun Life Financial, Stephen is continuing in his f ield support role,
helping advisors and their clients develop and implement solutions to meet both
personal and corporate requirements. Much of this work involves using life
insurance solutions for business succession and wealth transfer purposes.
At Sun Life, Stephen’s role includes providing direct support for the underwrit ing
team through training on specif ic insurance concepts and assistance with f inancial
underwrit ing while in the field. This includes reviewing f inancial statements and
other documentation with professional advisors and interviewing clients with
complex arrangements and/or specif ic privacy.
Pierre Vincent, FSA, FCIA
Pierre s’est joint à la Transamerica en 1996 et a occupé divers postes en
tarif ication des produits, marketing, gestion des ventes, développement
d’applications informatiques et gestion de projets. Pierre est présentement vice-
président principal, Stratégie des produits et profitabili té des affaires pour les
produits d’assurance vie et de placement.
Avant de venir se joindre à l ’équipe de la Transamerica, i l a occupé les postes
suivants : vice-président, Marketing, produits vie chez NN Services Financiers et
vice-président adjoint , Allocated Products pour la Financière Manuvie. Pierre a
fait ses études à l’Université Concordia. I l détient les t itres de Fellow of the
Society of Actuaries et de Fellow de l’ Institut canadien des actuaires.
Pierre joined Transamerica in 1996 and held various posit ions in pricing,
marketing, sales management, application development and project management.
Pierre is currently Senior VP, Product Strategy & Business Prof itability for the life
and investment product lines.
Prior to joining Transamerica, Pierre held the following posit ions: VP Marketing,
Life Insurance Products at NN Financial; and Assistant Vice President, Allocated
Products at Manulife’s US Savings and Retirement Services division.
Pierre holds a Bachelor of Science with specialization in actuarial science from
Concordia University, Montreal. He holds the designation of Fellow of the Society
of Actuaries and Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.
