Performed from the Artaria edition published in Vienna in December 1787

The London Haydn Quartet: Catherine Manson, Michael Gurevich, James Boyd, Jonathan Manson The London Haydn Quartet turns to the six Op. 50 quartets. More serious—intellectually taut—than the Op. 33 ‘Russian’ quartets which they follow in Haydn’s output, these six ‘Prussian’ quartets dazzle in such committed performances as these.

Sergei TANEYEVString Quintet No. 1 in G major, Op. 14

Alexander GLAZUNOVString Quintet in A major, Op. 39

Gringolts Quartet, Christian Poltéra

The common goal of many nineteenth-century Russian composers of the period was the creation of a national musical idiom based on Russian folk song, for whom chamber music seemed far too abstract as well as too closely associated with German traditions. Alexander Glazunov is an obvious exception: never a dogmatic nationalist he was himself a competent amateur cellist who learned his craft by playing chamber music, and composed a number of chamber works, including the Quintet in A major presented on this disc. Also featured is Sergei Taneyev’s passionate, but at the same time tightly constructed String Quintet No. 1 in G major. Taneyev was a friend of Tchaikovsky – who greatly respected his advice while also fearing it – as well as the teacher of Rachmaninov and Nikolai Medtner. The Gringolts Quartet has invited the cellist Christian Poltéra to join them on this, the ensemble’s first appearance on the BIS label, in a programme that is in turn elegant, lyrical and passionate.

Enrique GRANADOS (1867-1916)

GoyescasEscenas poéticas

Joop Celis

Enrique Granados first came under the spell of Francisco de Goya in 1896 while viewing an exhibition of his works. Although the inspiration from Goya is readily acknowledged it is only two of the six pieces that make up Goyescas that can be related to specific works by the painter: No. 1 Los requiebros (‘The Flirtations’) and No. 5 El amor y la muerte (‘Love and Death’) were both inspired by etchings from the celebrated series of ‘Caprichos’. Another image by Goya, of four young girls playing with a life-sized puppet made of straw, formed the inspiration for El pelele (‘The Straw Man’), which Granados composed after the suite and gave the subtitle ‘escena goyesca’. Performing these wonderfully sensuous works is the Dutch pianist Joop Celis, who here makes his first appearance on BIS. On this disc, Celis also includes Granados’s collection of seven ‘Poetic scenes’ as well as the brief Intermezzo which Granados composed for his opera Goyescas.

Erland VON KOCH (1910-2009)

Symphony No. 3, Op. 38; Sinfonia seria, Op. 51; Impulsi; Nordiskt capriccio, Op. 26

Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Per Hammarström

One of Erland von Koch’s most frequently performed orchestral works is Nordiskt capriccio, which was inspired by a folk tune from Dalecarlia, and which forms the festive finale on the present disc. The compositions which precede it are less well known. They include Impulsi (the first part of a triptych later completed with the works Echi and Ritmi) whilst the two symphonies 3 and 4 appear for the first time on disc. In Symphony No. 3, influences from Bartók and Hindemith can be detected; composed in 1948, it is a work which in its thematic material contrasts defiance with lyricism and, finally, a feeling of release. Sinfonia seria, von Koch’s fourth work in the genre, followed a few years later, undergoing a final revision in 1962. As indicated by the title, the underlying mood of the work is grave and bittersweet.

Edvard GRIEG: String Quartet in G minor, Op. 27;

Jean SIBELIUS: String Quartet in D minor, ‘Voces intimae’, Op. 56;

Olav Anton THOMMESSEN: Felix Remix (String Quartet No. 4)

Engegård Quartet

A string quartet was among the very first works that Edvard Grieg presented after completing his studies in 1861, but the Quartet in G minor, Op. 27, was the only such work to be published in his lifetime. Some thirty years later, when Jean Sibelius composed his D minor quartet Op. 56, he had some previous experience of writing for the medium, but Op. 56 is the only quartet among his mature works. The often used ‘nickname’ Voces intimae is often taken to refer to the intimate interchange between the four voices in a quartet, but is probably a more specific allusion to a brief passage in the third movement: Sibelius wrote the remark into a score some time after the work had been published. On its first release on BIS the Engegård Quartet includes Felix Remix by Olav Anton Thommessen. The work, premièred by the Engegård Quartet in 2014, is based on the second movement, 'Allegro di molto', of Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet, Op. 44 No. 2.

A Bassoon in Stockholm…Franz BERWALD: Septet in B flat major; Quartet in E flat major; Édouard DU PUY: Quintet in A minor

Donna Agrell, Lorenzo Coppola, Marc Destrubé, Franc Polman, Yoshiko Morita, Albert Brüggen, Robert Franenberg, Ronald Brautigam

Some thirty years ago, Donna Agrell acquired a rare Grenser & Wiesner bassoon, built in Dresden sometime around 1820. The bassoon came in its original case, with an address label indicating that the instrument had been delivered to Stockholm. One who swore by his bassoon from the company was Frans Preumayr, a German bassoon virtuoso whom inspired commissions from the flamboyant music director at the Stockholm opera, Édouard Du Puy, and a young Franz Berwald. For the present recording Donna Agrell has chosen three chamber works, all premièred by Preumayr. She is joined by colleagues from the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century as well as by Ronald Brautigam – all of them playing period instruments.

Johannes BRAHMS: Piano Sonata No. 3

Sunwook Kim

In this second Accentus Music recording Sunwook Kim compares and contrasts César Franck’s Prélude, Choral et Fugue and Johannes Brahms’s Third Piano Sonata in F minor Op. 5. Both men were pianists that venerated the musical forms of the past, especially Bachian polyphony, and both revered the spirit of Classicism. To these qualities may be added a love of proportion and a genius for organization and well‐ordered architectural structures, reflected in the works on this CD.

Volume 2 draws on two pillars of the violin concerto repertoire, Bartók and Prokofiev’s second violin concertos. These works offer some of the composers’ most lyrical and luminous music. As Claire Delamarche offers in her insightful booklet annotations ‘these two concertos bear the mark of an idealism that could only have emerged from a world in crisis, like flowers blossoming on a battlefield.’

From weird and idiosyncratic, to slightly crazy and absolute genius – today’s evaluation of the composer Charles Ives remains as multi-faceted as that of his principal work for solo piano, the Concord Sonata. Despite the difficult technical issues (the abandoning of bar lines for long passages, the use of chord clusters etc.) Tzimon Barto’s interpretation is full of his renowned sensitivity and provides us with a new and impressive insight into this masterpiece of twentieth-century piano literature.

Having begun work on his Ninth Symphony in the late summer of 1887, Anton Bruckner worked on it until the time of his death nine years later. He intended to dedicate the work to ‘my dear God’, and his Mass in F minor is another work that praises his gratitude to God. Performed several times during Bruckner’s lifetime, the Mass in F minor has always ranked ahead of its sister works, securing its place among the most popular, late Romantic sacred choral works.

This release is the third volume in CPO’s series of Bach’s harpsichord concertos. Carl Maria von WEBERComplete OverturesWDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Howard Griffiths

Although Weber is celebrated as the father of the German romantic opera, aside from Der Freischütz, most of his other stage works are very rarely performed. Their Overtures however, with their colourful, lyrical instrumentation, and combination of Viennese Classicism and new romantic drama, have stood the test of time as individual orchestral works.

These compositions show us Röntgen at his most authentic: as a nineteenth century ‘Leipzig man’, with influences from Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Robert and Clara Schumann in evidence in these works. In many movements Röntgen also seems to draw on Norwegian folk music, which he had heard ten years before with Edvard Grieg during their hikes through the Norwegian countryside.

This set is a companion to the recently issued set of late sonatas (APR_6018) and includes what was the first ever recording of Beethoven’s 1st Piano Concerto – a late acoustic recording from 1925. In spite of the primitive recording, the energy of the outer movements and the poetry of the slow movement are not compromised. One of Europe’s foremost specialists in the contemporary flute world, Karin de Fleyt has produced this album containing three very different works. The solo work is by celebrated English composer Christopher Fox, one of the most individual of all modern composers, the concerto by Paul Goodey and the ensemble piece by Rolf Gehlhaar. Karin de Fleyt plays the flute, alto flute, piccolo and bass flute, as well as shakuhachi and bansuri flute.

PsalliteCor Cantiamo, Eric A. Johnson

Psallite presents an inspirational collage of choral works spanning the centuries. Musical eras are intermingled so the listener can experience the continuity of praise across generations, or hear the isolation of an individual lamentation. From the renaissance master Palestrina, to contemporary works by Esenvalds and Bryars, and wonderfully moving settings of African-American spirituals, this is a masterful collection which resonates with the traditions of the Psalms, but is also a wonderful summary of choral music styles.

Gerhard FROMMEL (1906-1984)

Piano Sonatas Nos 4-7Tatjana Blome

Gerhard Frommel regarded his piano sonatas as a miniature compendium of his entire output, reflecting a fundamentally Romantic approach melded with Stravinskian vitality. The Sixth Sonata’s poised profundity, inventiveness and structural perfection gives it a place as one of the best in its genre, its serene transparency lying between the powerfully heroic Fifth Sonata and the crystalline quality of the Seventh; a summation of expression in a work that Frommel was conscious would be his last.

The solo piano miniatures reveal a sparse texture that highlights the instrument’s elemental beauty.

C.P.E. Bach began writing his three cello concertos in 1750, not for his royal employer, but for middle-class musical society in Berlin and Potsdam. Bach obviously had an excellent player at his disposal - in all probability Ignaz Mara (1721-1783), the Bohemian first cellist at the royal chapel. La Didone is one of the earliest operas in existence, and Ercole Amante, at the time of its premiere, was the grandest show ever performed in Europe. By contrast, prior to its revival in the very Baroque gem of a theatre that hosted its premiere, the courtly farce Dove È Amore È Gelosia was virtually unknown, as was the hitherto neglected Deidamia, Handel’s final Italian opera. The 18th-century Baroque theatre machinery at Drottningholm lends authenticity to Rameau’s Zoroastre, as does the period Pergolesi Theatre at Jesi to the performance of Adriano in Siria.

This visceral music is close to the maestro’s heart. He not only talks about its history and demonstrates what makes it such an innovative, inspiring and exhilarating composition, but also explains his special affinity with this work from Stravinsky’s ‘Russian period’.

Richard WAGNER, Ludwig van BEETHOVENA Tribute to Hans Knappertsbusch

Wiener Philharmoniker

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Hans Knappertsbusch worked together for the first time at the Salzburg Festival in 1929. Although the orchestra and the conductor had never met, Knappertsbusch rehearsed only the first part of the programme. He refused to rehearse Beethoven’s Eroica, saying: ‘You know the work, I know the score’. The violinist Otto Strasser remembers: ‘He radiated such confidence on the evening of the concert that a rehearsal had indeed not been necessary’… This charisma and Knappertsbusch’s relationship with the orchestra are captured on this release.

Blood on the FieldsWynton Marsalis

Wynton Marsalis, ‘possibly the best trumpeter of all times’ (Maurice André) is the most famous member of a musical family from New Orleans. He started his career as a Wunderkind and had his breakthrough with Art Blakey. Here, he uses his profound knowledge of his instrument’s tradition in all styles from old-time jazz to post-bop and combines it with his virtuosity and flawless technique. This film directed by Susan Shaw is about the making of the album Blood on the Fields.

Lullaby of Birdland: The Shearing TouchGeorge Shearing (1919–2011), blind from birth, had made a name for himself in England as a Swing pianist before he set out for the United States in 1949 to become the most successful European jazz musician of his time. He soon found his distinctive sound, which had a close connection to Cool Jazz. No one was able to connect Modern Jazz and well-groomed ‘Easy Listening’ as successfully as Shearing throughout the 1950s.

Charles GOUNODFaustStaged by Stefano Poda; Recorded at the Teatro Regio di Torino, 2015

Charles Castronovo, Ildar Abdrazakov, Irina Lungu, Vasilij LadjukOrchestra e Coro del Teatro Regio di Torino, Gianandrea Noseda

Premiered in Paris in 1859, Gounod’s Faust was an instant success and even today remains one of the most popular of all French operas. Its libretto was based on Michel Carré’s adaptation of his own stage play Faust et Marguerite, which in turn was loosely based on Goethe’s two-part tragedy. By placing a giant black ring centre-stage that casts an ominous shadow over the singers and dominates the stage, director, set and costume designer Stefano Poda has moved the storyline of the restless searcher Faust, to an abstract, seemingly futuristic hall. Charles Castronovo in the title role is especially convincing, with his brilliant acting and mellifluous singing. Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov – a regular in all major opera houses around the world – stars as the demonic Méphistophélès.

Johann Adolf HASSE (1699-1783)

ArtaserseStaged by Gabriele Lavia; Recorded at the Festival della Valle d’Itria, Martina Franca, Italy, July 2012

Anicio Zorzi Giustiniani, Maria Grazia Schiavo, Sonia Prina, Franco Fagioli, Rosa Bove, Antonio Giovannini, Ensemble Barocco of the Orchestra Internazionale d’Italia, Corrado Rovaris

A classic work of its genre and historical period, Artaserse was premièred in Venice in 1730 by the most famous singers of the day: Farinelli in the role of Arbace, Cuzzoni as Mandane and the castrato Nicolino as Artabano. Following its initial success, Hasse produced two different versions of the work, the first in 1740 and the second in 1760. This world première recording is based on the original Venice version. The exceptional cast features countertenor Franco Fagioli in the role originally taken by Farinelli, his stunning technique making light of the 3-octave range with uniform timbre, remarkable power and striking resonance. Equally memorable is the aria ‘Pallido sole’ sung by Sonia Prina. This world première recording is also available on CD.

‘John Sebastian Bach‘s Matthew Passion has deeply moved me. Bach‘s musical incarnation of the Passion in both its general and personal aspects created the need in me to find a choreographic equivalent. I am both Christian and a dancer. My whole life, all my thoughts and feelings are dance, and choreography is my real language. That is why I have attempted to express my own religious convictions and experiences in choreographic terms and to organize them in artistic form’ - John Neumeier.
