“There is a story behind every songthat I write and usually behind everysong that I arrange that is very inti-mately significant to me,” said MaryBeth Carlson. “This whole journey real-ly framed us and a purpose for me inwriting songs.”

Carlson’s inspiration for her latestcompact disc, “Smile with a Song inYour Heart,” is her daughter’s battlewith cerebral palsy and autism.Recently, growing side effects have pro-foundly challenged Carlson and herfamily.

“I started writing songs that hadthemes of peace and the need for restora-tion for the calm in our home that hadalways been there” said Carlson, whowill perform Friday, Dec. 10 inBloomington.

As the severity of her daughter’s ill-ness appeared to stabilized, Carlson saysher writing progressed into songs abouthope.

“The doctors, with a diagnosis ofpsychosis and schizophrenia told usthere was no cure, and therefore no

hope. Does a parent justaccept that? Absolutelynot. So we continue tohang on to the joy. It’sour reality. That’s wherethe CD came from,” shesaid.

The Minnesotapianist, composer andarranger has released 19CD’s of spiritually piano-

based music over the years.“More than the objective of writing

and performing music to help myself, Ido truly play music for the healingprocess in other people,” Carlson said.“Sometimes music is the language thatcan really speak to the heart and putsthat peace that give’s people what theyneed at a certain point in time.”

Fellow musician and long-time col-laborator Diane Tremaine says Carlson“is a delight to work with. I have thegreatest respect for her.”

The cellist has played with artistsranging from Prince to Elton Johnand The Minnesota Orchestra. Shewill perform with Carlson inBloomington.

“Mary Beth is the same, on-stage, offor wherever. I’m never wondering any-thing with her. In this business that isvery refreshing. She is the real deal,”said Tremaine.

World-class guitar player BillyMcLaughlin was a guest artist onCarlson’s latest CD. The two solo per-formers met years ago at a benefit andfinally had a chance to work together.

“She believes in the magic of music. It’s funny she told me just to come in [tothe studio] and the magic would happen, and she was right. She was happy withwhat I played,” McLaughlin said.

“Supportive listeners” is the termCarlson uses for her fans, the word “fan”itself is a bit of a turn-off.

“Everybody understands what thatword is. To me it doesn’t feel as friendly.‘Supportive listener’ feels like the kindof listeners who respond to me withemails, phone calls and their letters. Itsays what I mean, a reflection of how Ifeel about the people appreciating themusic we’ve shared for years and years,”said Carlson.

The driving force behind Carlson isher faith.

“It’s very specific. Quite simply, Ibegin with prayer, reading God’sword. The theme is interwoventhroughout all the words. Then thewords give the music heart. Knowingthat everything is based in faith. Thatforms the passion.”

If you goMary Beth Carlson’s Annual Christmas

Concert will be held 7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec.10, at St. Michaels Lutheran Church, 9201Normandale Blvd. in Bloomington. Holiday show debutsDec. 3 in BloomingtonBY NICK CLARK • SUN NEWSPAPERS

A group of six strangers are headinghome for Christmas, and there is noth-ing comfortable about it.

They are what has come to be knownas 20-somethings; the tag often associat-ed with college grads teetering betweenthe real-world and the days of adoles-cence.

Socially, they are at a point in lifewhere these turning-the-cornermoments come with the guidance ofwhat is typically a tight-knit group offriends.

Then they go home for the holidays, and the weirdness sets in. Sound famil-iar? Considering that eventually every-body reaches this certain set of cross-roads, it should.

If not, the Bloomington Civic Theatrewill attempt to bring you into the lives ofsix of these aptly titled 20-somethings,as they vie with their inner selves on

where they are in life and how to dealwith it upon returning home forChristmas.

Neo Cabaret’s production of “On OurOwn: A Holiday Cabaret” will debut Dec.3 at the Black Box Theater at theBloomington Center for the Arts insidethe Bloomington Civic Plaza.

It’s a holiday performance, but beforethoughts of “A Christmas Carol” dancein your head, music director Anita Ruthoffers up this full disclosure:

“It certainly is a family show fromthe perspective of the families that haveolder kids, but it is not “We Wish You aMerry Christmas,’” she said. “There isonly one Christmas song in the entireshow. We even joke amongst ourselvesthat Rudolph is not here. This is a decid-edly different take.”

Santa doesn’t make an appearance, and as Ruth alluded to, there are no rein-deer either, though the production doesinclude a number of real-life holidayincidents, especially for those who trav-el at this time of year.

The show is set in an airport waitingThe cast of New Cabaret’s On Our Own: A Holiday Cabaret will open their holiday performance Dec. 3 atthe Bloomington Civic Theatre. (Submitted Photo)

area where these six strangers all crosspaths while heading home for the holi-days.

For each, there are various levels ofanxiety this holiday season, somethingtheir still-nameless generation typicallydeals with in coming back to the homewhere their childhood played itself out.

Do they go back to being a son ordaughter? Would they rather be out withfriends? Have those friends taken overthe role of family? Why is my letter jack-et still hanging in the closet?

“It’s all sorts of questions,” Ruthsaid. “It’s about all the extra pressuresthat come with being a so-called 20-something. They are always searchingfor their identity, trying go figure outwho they are.”

The music that accompanies theshow has similar questions, mainly:Where did it come from?

According to Ruth, most of the songswere found on You Tube, where a grow-ing force of underground singer-song-writers deal with similar queries intheir music.

“There is a huge movement – mostlyin New York – of 20-something singer-songwriters that perform their works inCabaret’s and post them on You Tube,”Ruth said. “It is good music, and it doesspeak very much to that generation. It isall about them and the whole ‘who am Igoing to be’, and ‘now what do I do?’”

The idea for such a show was intro-duced to Ruth by the group of 20-some-thing performers she worked with onthis project.

In April, the group published

“Practically Grown Up,” which was abroader tale of life-altering decisionsthese 20-somethings face. “On Our Own”is narrowed to strictly the holiday sea-son setting.

Originally, Ruth was tepid aboutturning this type of Cabaret into aChristmas show, but after hearing themusic and ideas presented to her, the 30-year stage veteran who has played a rolein more than 150 musicals warmed tothe idea.

“I wasn’t sure it would work, but thisis real life,” Ruth said. “I think theshow is very much grounded in reality. All the kids in the cast are indeed 20-somethings, and it’s really about theperformer. It really gives the people inthe show a chance to show what theycan do, and you can do it with suchdepth.”

“On Our Own” stars the BloomingtonCivic Theater cast of Matt Berdahl,Debra Berger, Justine Bergevin, JaredOxborough, Adam Qualls and HayleyWender.

If you goThe show will run Dec. 3-5, Dec. 9-12 andDec. 16-19. Thursday, Friday and Saturdayevening performances begin at 7:30 p.m..Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m.Tickets are $18 for adults, and $16 for bothseniors and students. Those who have watched“Seinfeld” half as manytimes as I have are sure toremember “The SerenityNow” episode.

It was aired originallymore than 13 years ago andis titled after the sayingcharacters use as a rage-controlling exercise.“Serenity now” is adoptedby “hipster doofus” CosmoKramer, who hits his break-ing point at the end of theepisode. His fury isunleashed upon severalunopened computers he istemporarily warehousingin his apartment on behalfof his friend GeorgeCostanza, who orderedthem to temporarily pad hissales total.

I found myself saying“serenity now” more thanonce the past few weeks, and as my co-workers canattest, I was on the verge ofa meltdown one Thursdaynight not so long ago.

I’m happy to report thatthe meltdown was averted. No Sun Newspapers com-puters were harmed, astempting as it may havebeen to throw one through awindow.

My recent lapse of seren-ity was fueled by the deathof my work computer. I didsomething unusual for me –triggering a cataclysmicchain of events – I turned itoff the previous night.

Normally I leave the com-puter on, restarting it everyfew days to give it that freshstart I’m told it periodicallyneeds. UncharacteristicallyI shut the computer offbefore leaving onWednesday evening. I didn’treturn to the office untilThursday night, havingspent the day out and about.

I came into the office tocatch up on e-mail, which I

get too much of, and spentthree hours doing about 30minutes worth of work. That’s because my comput-er wouldn’t work. Itappeared that it wanted towork, but somehow the con-nection between the harddrive and the monitor was-n’t allowing me to do mything. That problem has yetto be solved.

Without my usual com-puter, I no longer had accessto a variety of files I relyupon each week. Reclaimingthem is not impossible, andit’s frustrating.

I also lost access to sever-al Internet bookmarks Ihad. Online tools and sever-al sites I rely upon forassembling the communityhighlights calendar were nolonger accessible at theclick of the mouse. I canfind most of them again, but the exercise of rebuild-ing my arsenal is less thanpleasing.

These setbacks were farless troubling than whathappened next. The laptopwas connected to my e-mailaccount so I could haveaccess to the hundreds of e-mail messages I hang ontoas if they’re invaluable tomy job. I delete a batch ofold messages periodically, but there’s a certain com-fort in having e-mail com-munication from the pastseveral months available atthe push of a few buttons.

My faith in technologywas again tested when Ilogged into the e-mail sys-tem via the laptop computer

a day or two later and foundthat all but the most recentmessages were gone. E-mailtips I was holding onto forfuture reference are history,as are a few announcementssubmitted on behalf ofchurches or other organiza-tions for upcoming events.

I have never lost a photoalbum in a fire, but I think Ican empathize with thosewho have.

Some day soon I’m goingto receive an inquiry as towhy I chose not to use infor-mation about a given com-munity event in our papers. This time I get to blame iton technology instead ofmy failure to properlyorganize and disseminatedozens of weekly e-mailsubmissions and inquiries.

The recent setbacks gaveme pause to reflect upon asimpler time, – say 13 yearsago – when I wasn’t at themercy of e-mail.

Thanks to computers andthe Internet I can work athome, plug into the officeremotely and file stories, news briefs or photo cut-lines at my conveniencerather than wait until I’msitting at my designateddesk. But the dependenceupon a working computerfor so many aspects of ourlives and the inability to doanything meaningful for thenewspaper without it werepainfully obvious to me.

My computer setbackswere far from crippling, yetthey threatened my sense ofserenity.

Costanza’s sales rival,Lloyd Braun, tells him that“serenity now” doesn’twork. “Serenity now, insani-ty later,” Braun tells him.

I’m a bit fearful that theinsanity later is coming thenext time a computer quitson me.

Hassles aside, it’s serenity, for now

Spartan spirit apparentduring fall sports seasonTo the editor:

Even though the records for some ofour fall sports teams were not as favorableas anticipated, I congratulate all of theparticipants for their dedication andalways playing with the usual Spartanspirit. I feel honored to know and supportthese young athletes as a fan and friend.

The football team opened with a win atNorth St. Paul but lost starter Joe Griffinfor the season via injuries. They battledthroughout the rest of the season, howev-er, and gave a highly ranked South St. Paulteam a real test in the sections. The futurelooks bright because of our returning jun-iors and a strong sophomore team thatimpressed me with their size and speed.

Our girls tennis team was paced byCarly Klass and Sophie Pulice, whoteamed up for a strong showing in the sec-tions; many players return next year. Involleyball, the team was led by the allaround play of Jessica January and BryGuyton; even though outsized in mostmatches, the girls never backed down. Thegirls swimming team improved through-out the season with the diving members, led by state qualifier Kelsie Metz, consis-tently having outstanding performances.

In girls cross country, Hannah Olsondistinguished herself by winning herthird conference title, taking fourth in thesections and making a strong showing inthe state meet; Zak Beaudet was a strongrunner on the boys team. Both soccerteams found wins hard to come by but lookfor better results next season.

Tax bill grows higher as your home loses valueTo the editor:

I am so angry! I got my estimated tax bill for 2011. My home

value has gone down 7 percent and my taxes aregoing up again, 4.6 percent.

Oh, that may not sound like much, and mymother would say “calm down.” But I’m tired ofbeing calm while my taxes go up, up, up and thevalue of my home goes down, down, down. Cutyour budgets Richfield and Hennepin County, likeI have to. Be calm with your spending.

“You don’t like it, leave,” you say? In fact, I triedselling my home this summer, for the amountHennepin County seems to think my home is worthnow, and after four months, not an offer, not evenlookers. So now I think I’ll contact an agent toshort-sell. I just cannot afford higher taxes everyyear while my home, my asset, decrease and thegovernment wants my cash.

Enjoy that new city hall and those nice pen-sions, folks. I’m going broke. Better yet, if I sendyou a bill for a 7-percent increase in my livingexpenses, will you be forced to send me a check?

Do you have a very young child inyour life? It’s not too soon to think aboutwhat you can do to help prepare him orher for school. Research shows that chil-dren who have developed six basic pre-reading skills begin school more readyto learn.

Children need to know the alphabetand the sounds each letter makes, beable to rhyme and hear smaller parts of

words, know how to handle a book, knowwhat words mean and know how to usewords to describe or tell a story. Theseskills are needed before children canlearn to read.

Does it sound like a lot? In a way, chil-dren do have a lot of work to do, but itmost often looks like playing. There aremany ways for parents to help childrengrow into readers, but reading togetherevery day is a joyful, necessary and easyway to help children develop theseskills. The early literacy years aren’t

about drills and flashcards – they’reabout exposing children to language andallowing them the space and time to getcomfortable, develop their own expert-ise, and most of all, have fun.

As parents and caregivers, you areyour child’s first teacher. Readingtogether, singing and chanting nurseryrhymes all contribute to literacy skills.Start doing these together from themoment your child is born.

Your physical presence during theseactivities actually helps them learn.Sorry, the television and recorded voicesdo not develop language, only your voiceand words will, according to research.Establishing a love of reading in yourchild will help them succeed in everyschool subject later on.

As I drowsily drove throughthe sleepy streets of Osseo thismorning on the way to myworkplace’s home offices, Inoticed a wooden sign I’d neverseen before.

It hung above a barbershop, and read “Osseo’s OriginalMan Cave.”

Man Cave.Really, gentlemen – when did

we get relegated to the base-ment or the garage?

In the interests of full disclo-sure, I had a man cave of myown once. It was called “DasHerrenzimmer” (“The ManRoom” in German) and was adepository for all of the stuffthat I thought was cool but wasobviously not sane enough todisplay in parts of the housewhere other people might actu-ally see it. I had my militarycollections, my models, vinylrecords, my old Star Wars toysand my weight equipment.

I would have stored mymotorcycle down there, but I

couldn’t figure out how to get itdown the stairs without killingmyself in the process. Besides, the exhaust would have likelynot gone down well in thehouse, considering my wife anddaughter have asthma. Theseare the sacrifices I make.

In short, the Herrenzimmerwas where I hid all of the lesser-polished parts of myself. It wasa toy room for a man thatrefused to let everything go andemerge as a respectable adultfrom his youth cocoon. My wifedecorates with tasteful furni-ture. I decorate with tastefulaction figures marked“Copyright 1981 Lucasfilm Ltd.”

I’m apparently not alone inthis. My wife watches all sorts

of house-related programming(ironic, seeing as she hates theburden of the house we actual-ly own), and I seem to recall thestandard exchange. The wife, looking at houses with the obvi-ously-less-put-together hus-band she somehow nursesthrough daily life, looks at aroom in the basement and says,“This would make a great manroom. You could put all your(choose from the following:toys, sports crap, weights, videogames, etc.) in here!”

The man, knowing that hereally has no say in the matter, smiles painfully and gulps.Deep down, a little voice asks apainful question: “What hap-pened to you?”

I don’t recall my father hav-ing a man cave. He had thewhole house. Where did thisconcept come from?

I think I have the answer. Inthe past generation, societalroles changed. More womenearned college degrees than

men, and are thus empoweredto a somewhat equal or evensuperior role in terms of beingthe provider for the relation-ship. In response, women havehad a greater stake and say inhow things are – and the menget to keep their crap in thebasement as a result.

These changes led directly tothe development of the “mancave” concept. The term seems toindicate not only the view thatmen are basically primitives whoneed to be primitive (could betrue), but also seems a patheticlast gasp of the testosterone ofmales (like myself) who are in theplace in life where self-respectingmanhood is most imperiled – youknow, the balding, buying aminivan, “Which drapes lookbetter, honey?” phase.

It’s just a theory, but itmakes sense to me. But keepingmy Star Wars toys in the base-ment? That still makes no senseto me. The world needs to seethose.

Thanksgiving proves culture is hitchhiker of immigrationBorn in the capital city of Dhaka, I

know a thing or two about beingBengali … that is, of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is, irrefutably, thepathetic little brother and easternneighbor of India. And truth is, Ican’t deny that; Bangladesh is trulypathetic.

Since its secession fromPakistan in 1971, it hasbeen riddled with poverty, political disaster and reli-gious turmoil during allforty-or-so years of itsmeager existence. My fam-ily migrated to America in 1994 forobvious reasons.

Having moved to America when Iwas less than a year old, I rememberednothing of my homeland besides whatI could glean from photographs andhome video. During a prolonged sum-mer trip there in 2007, which was alsoour first time back since 1994, I wasable to retouch the roots of my nativeculture.

Although I spoke Bengali, ateBengali foods and attended Bengaliget-togethers back “home.” I recogniz-

ing the inglorious land from which Icame was a bit of a shock. Well, bythen a thoroughly spoiled Americanadolescent, a big shock. Nonetheless, Ihappily embrace my nativity.

America is a country of immi-grants. It has been described as a melt-

ing pot, patchwork quiltand even a tossed salad bymy seventh-grade socialstudies teacher. I am livingproof of your heteroge-neous-mixture-of-choice.

Culture is the hitch-hiker of immigration.

And thus, it should be no surprisethat Thanksgiving is generally un-American in our household. In previ-ous years, we have attended potluckswith family friends, usually number-ing close to 50 people. At thesepotlucks, you won’t typically find thecharacteristic glazed turkey or the pic-turesque, autumn-themed table orna-mentation. Instead, you’ll find plattersof bhaji, chicken and beef curry, korma, jasmine rice and kebabs. A fewyears ago, I remember there beingturkey, but nothing you’d recognize as

American (or edible, for that matter).Despite differences in cuisine, a

Bengali Thanksgiving and anAmerican Thanksgiving have one thingin common: thanks-giving. It’s a notori-ously warm-hearted time for friendsand family to get together and takepleasure in one another’s company.

Considering that for some people,“Thanksgiving” is synonymous with“Black Friday,” it is striking how out oftouch we can become with our own kinor even our own friends. For those whoparticipate, Thanksgiving inMinnesota compounds the effect; peo-ple can’t escape the warmth ofindoors.

Even though this Turkey Day wasanother turkeyless one, it’s signifi-cance remains great. I’m sureThanksgiving means a great deal toimmigrants, because it does to thisBengali. I thoroughly enjoyed thekorma.

Happy holidays everyone!

that left me without a familyThanksgiving for the first time.

I wasn’t worried about the roads –they weren’t that bad. However, I musthave been the only one who showed noconcern for traveling the day before theholiday.

I started west on Highway 12 at 1:30p.m. By 3:30 p.m. I had made it approxi-mately 50 miles, with much of that com-ing in the final hour.

I hit my brakes several times in thatfirst hour just to see how bad the roadsreally were and why it justified driving30 mph. No sliding, no skidding, yet stilllittle or no moving.

In hour No. 2 the traffic began to thinout and it appeared I might actuallymake it home for the holiday.

That’s when Mother Nature inter-vened.

The snow changed briefly to rain andthen back to snow, meaning the temper-ature rose and dropped just enough tocoat the roads with water that couldfreeze and make my journey difficult ifnot impossible.

I made the decision to turn aroundand not brave the elements – much to thedismay of my mother.

Returning home, I ventured to a gro-

cery store and picked up everything Ineeded for a Thanksgiving dinner –turkey, potatoes, gravy and even vegeta-bles, which I don’t like or typically eat.

I extended invitations to my friendsthat I knew had to be back for work onFriday morning. One of those friendsactually accepted the invitation, eventhough he knew I’d be cooking.

Dinner went off without a majorhitch. Only minor ones like forgettingwhat time I put the turkey in the oven, which caused overcooking.

Nobody got sick and, much like Iwould have back home, I got to take amuch-needed nap.

It wasn’t until after my nap that Itruly realized the extent of what MotherNature had done to me.

I looked at my kitchen and immediate-ly missed my mother, grandmother andaunts as the pile of dishes stared back atme. Petty, I know.

A few days later, many of them arestill sitting on my countertop, waitingfor their turn in the dishwasher.

I now have a newfound appreciationfor the work that it takes to put on a hol-iday dinner and hope that MotherNature is now satisfied that I’ve learnedsomething and will give me a dry, brownChristmas so I don’t have to do thismuch work for a meal ever again.

Dozens of book sales scheduledat libraries in Hennepin County BY MUNA HASSAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Best sellers, cook books, science fic-tion, teen and children’s books are justsome of the genres that will be availablefor the public to buy for $2 or less atlibrary book sales throughout Hennepincounty.

Library Friends Groups throughoutHennepin County will have book salesoccurring with thousands of books onsale at each Hennepin County library.Seven book sales are remaining this year, with more scheduled through October2011.

Some participating libraries includeOxboro Library and Penn Lake Libraryin Bloomington, Eden Prairie Library,Ridgedale Library in Minnetonka,Hopkins Library, Maple Grove Library, and Augsburg Park Library inRichfield.

About half the books on sale comefrom donations from the communitywhile the other half come from overstockat the library.

All the proceeds of the book sales go tothe library, but that is not the only reasonfor the sales.

“It’s a two-fold,” said Allen Maffit ofOxboro Library in Bloomington, “Thefirst is to make money, but it’s alsoabout putting books in the hands of thecommunity.”

The book sales are run by volunteersfrom the Library Friends Group of the

specific library at which the book saleoccurs.

Friends groups work much like a PTAat a high school. They raise money forthe library to put on free programmingas well as to buy new books and shelving.

Each library has a different collectionof books, which adds to the diversity ofthe sales.

“It’s a treasure chest of opportunitiesof things to find,” said Rachel Fulkerson,Public Awareness and CommunicationsDirector of the Library Foundation ofHennepin County.

At Oxboro Library, Maffit said hun-dreds of people come to each sale, withthe possibility to sell thousands ofbooks.

With donations from all walks of life, some books may not be fit to sell, butMaffit said no books get thrown away dur-ing the process. If they can’t be sold, theygo to the free box.

“Nothing escapes,” said Maffit.“Everything is taken home.”

While the public can rent books fromthe library on a regular basis, the booksales allow people to own the books theyreally want, which, to some, is the mostimportant part of the sales.

“The best part is watching people comein and score the books they want to own,”said Maffit.

A complete list of Library FriendsGroups book sales is available online.

Reusable bottle program successful in Three Rivers Park DistrictThis spring, the Three Rivers

Parks Board approved a pilot pro-gram to phase out the sales of bever-ages in disposable plastic containersat Park District facilities by summer2010.

Three Rivers developed a staff-training program, purchasedreusable bottles and created publiceducation materials in time to launchthe pilot program on Memorial Dayweekend.

Implementation of the pilot pro-gram required support from through-out the organization. A key compo-nent of the program was educationfor park staff and the public.Collectively, the parks sold 10,374reusable bottles from Memorial Dayweekend through Labor Day.

Baker National Golf Course andHyland Visitor Center sold the mostreusable bottles at 3,257 and 2,352,respectively.

The reusable bottle option was suc-cessful in reducing the number ofdisposable plastic bottles sold, according to the Three Rivers ParkDistrict. Thus eliminating a portion

of the Park District’s waste stream, which was the objective of the pilotprogram.

A comparison of sales data forwater in disposable plastic bottlesindicates a 48 percent reduction in2010 from the previous summer sea-son (Memorial Day through LaborDay).

Overall, the pilot program was“well-received” by park guests, ThreeRivers Park District stated. A surveyconducted by Park District researchstaff indicated that 83 percent ofrespondents agreed with the state-ment “Three Rivers should encour-age the use of reusable water bot-tles.” Maintenance staff has con-firmed that the reusable bottles werenot being tossed in park waste recep-tacles.

Supervisors and managers in thepark system attributed much of thesuccess of the program to the season-al staff for promoting and explainingthe reusable bottle option.

With Board support, staff proposes tocontinue the reusable bottle program in2011.

going to create a universe. They areastounded about his plans and the reve-lation that there will be other createdbeings. The story journeys from beforethe world was created until the nativity.

“We have about 90 voices in the choirand wonderful, skilled actors, actressesand dancers. It’s a remarkable assem-blage of people,” Parker said.

Choir members and dancers fromBerean and Parker’s ministry will bedressed as the angels and will be accom-panied by a professional orchestra. Themusic is an array of many musical gen-res, including contemporary, jazz,Broadway, gospel, ballads, Spanish, calypso and classic.

“When I say classic, I don’t mean clas-sical,” Parker added. “I mean that it’sthe wonderful, rich, lush sounds of bigorchestras and tight choral singing. It’sthat classic American sound that hasbeen with us since the 1920s.”

Parker wrote Heaven Rejoices in 1981,and Bob Krogstad, Dove Award-winningarranger for artists Sandi Patty, MelTormé, Michael Crawford and NatalieCole, wrote the orchestration.

“He’s one of the great orchestratorsin America and has done some phenom-enal stuff. It’s all beautiful writing inthis musical,” Parker said.

Parker has been involved in localchurch ministry for more than 45 yearsas a pastor, worship leader and drama-tist. He founded Christian ArtsMinistries after leaving a post at GraceChurch in Eden Prairie to create origi-nal productions that allow Christians touse their talents to communicate thegospel.

He joined the Berean Baptist staff inMarch after the former minister ofmusic was diagnosed with cancer andwas no longer able to continue his dutiesas director. Originally, Parker was intend-ing to stay for a month, but the churchasked if he would be able to stay for anadditional year, which he accepted.Parker asked Berean if the church wouldconsider doing a combined Christmasproduction with his ministry rather thanhaving two separate productions.

“I love the people,” Parker said ofBerean Baptist. “They’re just delightful, and I’m having a good time.”

The performances will take placeDec. 10-12 at Berean Baptist Church, located at 309 East County Rod 42. Formore information or for tickets, call 952-223-1870 or visit heavenrejoices.com.

Richfield boys hockey coach JohnChrist knows lack of depth may causeproblems for his team, but he believesthe Spartans’ work ethic can make upfor any shortcomings.

“We are pretty thin in the depthdepartment and can’t afford manyinjuries or illnesses,” said Christ, in hissecond season as head coach. “We don’thave a junior varsity squad to draw play-ers from.

“But we have experienced playerswho are hard workers. They are a fun

group to work with and their parentshave been great.”
