beautiful months of the year with lots of tourists

who seek to celebrate the December holidays in

the sun!

We have summed some of the highlights and

traditions not to miss of our Dushi Curacao!

Sinterklaas

The islands of the Netherlands Antilles have a

unique Christmas celebration that comes straight

from Holland, with visits from Sinterklaas and his

mysterious minions, the Zwarte Piet (Black Pete).

In Curacao children receive their holiday gifts not

only on Christmas morning but also on Dec. 6,

the birthday of St. Nicholas. Sinterklaas, arrives

by boat in Willemstad in mid-November to give

candy to children, aided by his Black Pete

helpers with their black-painted faces and

elaborate costumes. Island children welcome

Sinterklaas with carrots for his white horse and

shoes in which to place gifts. Sinterklaas

celebrations in Curacao take place in schools,

hospitals, shopping malls and at homes.

Christmas & New Year’s Eve

Each of the countries in the Caribbean

celebrates Christmas in its own unique way, with

similarities and differences in many of the

traditions. In Curacao its two and a half days of

family oriented festivities which begin at noon on

Christmas Eve (24th).

famous Fruit Cake made with fruits and nuts, soaked

in a wonderful blend of liqueurs or the Ayaka which is

similar to pastelle, but uses chicken strips instead of

minced meat. Everywhere you will see the

euphorbia pulcherrima a small poinsettia plant

(pictured above) displayed in people’s homes, as the

traditional Christmas flower.

On December 31, the celebration starts at noon with

different companies closing the year with firework

shows locally called ‘pagara show’.

At night there are many places to celebrate New

Years Eve. Such as The famous Big Bang party at The

Rif Fort. The people of Curacao have the Dutch
