What’s going on with Lord Baden Powell Drive?

It’s a question residents – and Council engineers – have been asking in recent weeks following record rainfall over winter and early spring.

With repairs unable to take place due to the ongoing wet weather and Council resources dedicated to the flood response, the road was closed in October as the surface had become unsafe for traffic.

Over the past few weeks Council has undertaken extensive investigation works to

uncover the root of the problem, including drilling three-metre deep holes at regular intervals.

The tests found silty material two metres below the surface had become so saturated that water could be seen flowing out of the road failures during downpours.

“Lord Baden Powell Drive has been severely impacted by the extended wet weather event over the past few months,” General Manager Alan Eldridge said.

“What may have looked like potholes to the naked eye was actually a symptom of an abnormal issue deep below the surface.

“With so much rain this year, water was seeping from the rocky area that Lord Baden Powell Drive was originally constructed on and causing depressions and failures in the road surface.”

With the cause of the issue identified, repair works began on Thursday and will take about two weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Based on the testing results, two sub-soil drains will be installed 2.2m deep across the road to drain water away from the silty material. The road base will then be stabilised and a primer seal used to help the normal seal adhere to the inclined

“I understand it may have been frustrating for motorists, but I assure you it has also been frustrating for our staff as this was an out-of-the-ordinary problem and needed to be thoroughly investigated for the safety of the community.”

From front pageIf you are already a pet owner, dog

microchipping will be available and pet lifetime registration checks can be made.

“I strongly encourage people looking for a new pet to consider adopting over shopping. Shelter or rescue animals are looking for a second chance and deserve a forever home just as much as any other dog or cat,” Animal Welfare Supervisor Belinda Gibbs said.

“If you are looking for a new family

member come along next Saturday and meet some of the adorable canines and felines currently in our care.

“As well as the cute and cuddly, there’ll also be plenty of information on hand for all pet owners. Expert advice will be available from GRAS staff, local rescue groups, veterinarians and an animal behaviourist will discuss matters such as separation anxiety and problem barking.”

Ms Gibbs will be one staff member available to answer questions and provide

insights into how the GRAS facility operates. Ms Gibbs has previously worked as a

veterinary nurse, RSPCA supervisor, feline behaviourist and has strong knowledge in shelter disease management. Her appointment to the animal shelter team was one of a number of ongoing changes being implemented at the Wagga Wagga shelter in the interest of animal welfare.

The day is also a chance to learn how volunteers will be utilised at the shelter in the near future and register interest in

becoming a volunteer. “The Open Day will be a fun day out for the

whole family, with free barbecue, jumping castle and face painting available,” Ms Gibbs said. “If you’re an animal lover, interested in learning some new tips to help look after your pet, or just wanting to see how the city’s shelter cares for and rehomes animals, then come along and be part of the fun.”

Wagga Wagga’s theatrical history will take centre stage next week when the new exhibition Stagelights: 160 Years of Wagga Theatre opens in the city.

Stagelights tells the story of the theatre and drama groups who have brought productions to life for Wagga audiences, tracing right back to one of the earliest amateur drama groups in 1859.

The city’s rich theatrical history is shown through photographs, posters, programmes, costumes and stage props to provide a

journey through the magical world of theatre.

Stagelights is the annual partner exhibition between the Museum of the Riverina and Charles Sturt University’s Riverina Regional Archives.

Stagelights will show at the Museum of the Riverina Historical Council Chambers site from 19 November to 26 February 2017.

The exhibition will be officially opened by actress Lynne McGranger, better known as her

long-standing character Irene Roberts on Australia’s favourite TV show Home and Away.

McGranger is a well-loved Wagga theatre personality, taking out the Best Actress award at the Riverina College of Advanced Education in 1975.

The official open will take place Saturday 19 November from 10am at the Historical Council Chambers site, corner of Baylis and Morrow streets.

RSVP by phoning 6926 9655.

OPEN DAY 2016

Night works to rebuild a 300m section of Glenfield Road, including the rail overpass and Urana Street roundabout, will start on November 20.

The week-long rehabilitation project will renew the road surface for motorists and repair several damaged section along the popular stretch of road.

The $1M project is part of the City of Wagga Wagga’s planned rehabilitation program.

Glenfield Road will be closed from Dobney Avenue to Fernleigh Road, including no access from Urana Street, between the hours of 6.30pm and 7am.

“The Glenfield Road overpass is a major

thoroughfare in the city, and, as a result of significant traffic volumes and ageing infrastructure some sections of the road have suffered significant failures,” Supervisor Wearing Operations Lee Shoemark said.

“This project involves removing the existing pavement material and replacing it with a heavy-bound asphalt pavement,

similar to the Tarcutta Street works carried out earlier this year.”

The works are being undertaken by contractors Fulton Hogan in conjunction with the City of Wagga Wagga and are being completed at night to minimise inconvenience to motorists during the day.

Detours will be

signposted for motorists and will be down Fernleigh Road, Bourke Street, Dobney Avenue and Tobruk Street.

These works are separate to, and have no impact on, the City of Wagga Wagga’s road audit and pothole patching, which is being carried out as a result of flooding and rain events this year.

DID YOU KNOW? • In peak traffic this section of

Glenfield Road services more than 2000 vehicles an hour

• About 3500 tonnes of material will be used in the works

• Hot mix product used in this project will be poured at about 150-190ºC and must cool to at least 45ºC before traffic can drive on it.

You don’t need to go on a Surfin’ Safari – The Beach Boys are coming to Wagga Wagga.

While they won’t be riding the infamous five o’clock wave, the iconic California band will be performing a huge set of hits along with Detroit’s The Temptations at McDonald’s Park on 11 February.

Event organisers met at McDonald’s Park this week to finalise details for the huge event that will transform the footy ground into what Grant Hilton from Artist to Audience described as a “carnival atmosphere”.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see something like this in your own backyard,” Mr Hilton said. “The way I look at it, you plan trips to go to the

capital cities – this way you can invite your friends and family to Wagga and experience how beautiful this region is.

“We want people to come along and enjoy themselves – bring a picnic rug and something to sit on, have something to eat, catch up with their friends and have a beer or a glass of vino.

“There’ll be food stalls on the ground too and plenty of room to dance or sit back and enjoy the show.”

The Surf & Soul concert is proudly presented by the City of Wagga Wagga, which has provided $20,000 and use of McDonald’s Park to bring the show to the city.

Councillor Dan Hayes said it’s one of many big

events coming to Wagga over summer, including the Archibald Prize.

“This is another event in Wagga’s fantastic summer,” he said. “It’s a case of not having to leave Wagga to do things; you can stay here and enjoy it all.

“This is probably the biggest international band to ever visit Wagga. Their music isn’t classic – it’s timeless. These songs will be played long after we’re all gone.

“I couldn’t think of a better Christmas present for your family than tickets to this concert.”

A limited amount of specially priced tickets are available at the Civic Theatre box office and all other tickets

can be purchased online at surfandsoul.com.au.

With Beach Boys hits like Good Vibrations and Temptations classics such as My Girl set to echo out across McDonald’s Park, Mr Hilton urged fans to grab their tickets now or risk missing out.

“I saw The Beach Boys show about 12 months ago and it’s fabulous,” he said. “I haven’t seen The Temptations as they’re touring America at the moment with The Four Tops.

“People are in for a real treat and we’re thankful for the support from Council.”

To find out what else is happening in Wagga over summer, head to visitwagga.com.

GOOD VIBRATIONS: Getting into the spirit ahead of the Surf & Soul concert featuring The Beach Boys and The Temptations at McDonald’s Park are Grant Hilton from Artist to Audience and City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dan Hayes.

Council staff have been raising awareness of raw and risky foods as part of the 20th Australian Food Safety Week, including Environmental Health Officer Geoff Lang (pictured).

Following national major food poisoning outbreaks recently, this year’s theme is risky raw foods such as unpasteurized milk, raw eggs, bean/seed sprouts, frozen berries and lettuce.

OF THEWEEKPET

When you open a tourism brochure for just about every town or city, you’re more often than not met with a sentence along the lines of “We have a vibrant arts and cultural scene.”

It’s a statement that establishes an enticing tone for potential visitors

to ‘come visit us, you’ll like what we have to offer as a community.’

This statement is no less true for us here in Wagga and I had the pleasure recently to be involved in presenting the biennial Regional Arts Australia national conference & festival ARTLANDS in Dubbo at the end of last month.

Over 600 delegates and

a few thousand festival participants explored the best of what regional arts in Australia has to offer that for four days dominated the national arts conversation.

I am proud to say that Wagga Wagga and the Riverina was well represented with over 50 professional arts workers and artists representing us at this peak event. The impact of this is not to be underestimated with

exposure to national and international arts institutions and organisations such as National Museum of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Opera Queensland, New Art Exchange - Nottingham UK, Powerhouse Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art.

The reason I mention this is that our city’s investment in the arts has a far more reaching impact than

appears at first glance. Many of Wagga’s artists and arts-workers are recognised at a national and international level on a regular basis.

It’s through our investment in our cultural facilities and programs such as the Wagga Art Gallery, Civic Theatre, Museum, Library and Public Art along with our involvement in organisations like Eastern Riverina Arts that we get

to play on the national and international stage. This investment not only grows our involvement in this professional international industry, but in turn entices people to come to our city and experience what truly is a thriving and vibrant arts and cultural scene.
