Truck bypass funded
PARK PLAN COMES TOGETHERA water refill station is a feature of new works in the Attree Centre in Corryong.
Story on page 4.
A long awaited truck detour around the Corryong township is one
of nine projects funded across the Indi electorate which will share $5.6
million in Commonwealth government funding under its bridge renewal and heavy vehicle safety programs.
Funding of $1,376,182 has been earmarked for the deviation of heavy vehicle traffic from Corryong’s CBD to an alternative truck route from the eastern end of town and along the gravel road behind the Corryong Recreation Reserve.
The Corryong Stock
Route upgrade will complement the Hanson Street upgrade at the western end of the township.
Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport, Scott Buchholz, said 50 per cent of the funding from the Bridges Renewal Program and the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program would benefit communities impacted by the ongoing drought and
earlier bushfire events.“An amount of
$146.97 million in funding through these rounds will go to councils affected by bushfires, drought or both to provide secure work for local construction contractors and businesses who have felt the cumulative impact of these events and now Covid-19 while delivering lasting infrastructure that will benefit the region for years to come,” he said.

PaymentJobKeeper28 Mar 2021
The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.
There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.
It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.
We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until

A bicycle repair kit has also been placed next to the Visitor Information Centre, giving cyclists access to tools and a bike pump.
The project was initiated by a local young mothers’ group which worked together with the Corryong Neighbourhood Centre Garden Group to raise
$15,000 towards the new shade sails at the park which were installed in March.
The project was also successful in receiving a further $13,000 grant through the Commonwealth government’s Stronger Communities Program, endorsed by Helen Haines, Member for Indi.
The mothers’ group has also started a petition seeking improvements to the child care services in the town.

To date, Bendigo Bank’s national and state-based bushfire appeals have raised more than $46 million to help those affected by the Black Summer bushfires.
Almost half the funds raised by more than 145,000 generous donors have already been made available and distributed to a range of organisations working with local communities in their recovery, including the Man From Snowy River Bush Festival in Corryong.
The 25th anniversary of The Man From Snowy River Bush Festival was scheduled to take place in 2020 but due to the coronavirus pandemic those celebrations will now be focused on April 8th-11th, 2021.
“After working through the loss of all storage sheds and equipment from the January bushfires and the rush to replace equipment and infrastructure required
Festival benefits from bank fundingfor the April festival only to be cancelled three weeks out was heartbreaking,” said festival general manager, Jenny Boardman.
The replacement cost of lost equipment and infrastructure has been valued at approximately $410,000.
Festival chairman, Cameron Jackson, said “We are now fully focused on having a festival in 2021 and are looking forward to presenting a celebration next April, not only of our 25th event but also celebrating the positives of coming out of a year that has been horrendous for so many people in our community.
“This toughest of years has shown the resilience, strength and caring that makes the Upper Murray the special place it is and as a festival we want to celebrate what makes us unique.
“Support for our
festival for 2020 came from all over Australia and our volunteer base swelled from the usual 350 to 550.
“The cancellation of the festival has meant approximately $256,000 in ticket sales were refunded but more than half our online pre-sold ticket holders have rolled over their purchases to 2021 in support of the event.
“It is the wonderful support shown by our own Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise Foundation and Victorian Jewish Bushfire Relief, Freemasons, Towong Shire and our festival followers that enabled us to replace most of the equipment and infrastructure that was destroyed,” Mr Jackson added.
The funding assistance included:-
• Bushfire Disaster Appeal Bendigo Bank & Salvation Army donation of $152,795;
• Victorian Jewish
Bushfire Relief Appeal $70,000; and
• Freemasons $50,000.“There are many
projects underway on the road to recovery for the festival and the board is open to receiving ideas and input from the community,” Mr Jackson
said. If you have any thoughts on creating new events or ways to improve working relationships within the community please don’t hesitate to contact the festival office via email [email protected] or phone 02 6076 1992.
Brayden Coy, Bendigo Bank Corryong, with festival chair, Cameron Jackson and staff Jenny Boardman, Jane Saxton and Melissa Rice at the funding announcement.
Bendigo Bank has provided $2 million of its National Bushfire Disaster Appeal fund - conducted by the bank’s charitable arm, Community Enter-prise Foundation - to The Salvation Army, to help it establish a new Youth Education and Workplace Pathways Grants program for young people in bushfire affected communities across Australia.
The Salvation Army has also matched the funding provided by the bank’s National Bushfire Disaster Appeal, by injecting up to $2 million of its own public disaster
Recovery partnership focuses on youthappeal funds into the delivery of the new grants program nationwide.
The Youth Education and Workplace Pathways Grants program will focus on assisting 15 to 25-year-olds in fire impacted communities by awarding $3,000 cash grants to support their educational development and further their future workplace aspirations.
Eligible recipients who meet the grant application criteria can use these cash grants to cover:-
• Out of pocket expenses for government courses, TAFE programs, transition courses or other
identified educational programs;
• The purchase of study related or employment related materials such as laptops, books or tools; and
• Transport costs to and from employment, the purchase of safety equipment for courses or personal needs for improving employment interview presentation.
Alexandra Gartmann, the bank’s Executive Corporate Affairs, said the formation of the new grants program will allow eligible young people affected by the devastating summer fires
to access financial support quickly and easily, so as to ensure their education and personal development can continue.
Continuity of effort is crucial and we hope this new $4 million initiative will help more than 1,300 younger people in bushfire ravaged areas get back on their feet and refocus on their learning and career ambitions,” she said.
Lt-Colonel Neil Venables, Secretary for Communications at The Salvation Army, said it is pleased to be working in partnership with Bendigo Bank on this exciting new initiative for bushfire
affected young people.“Such a creative and
educational grant scheme taps into the physiological recovery needs of those who have experienced significant trauma,” he said. It transitions people from the immediate into a long-term foundation of new opportunities.”
For more information on the Youth Education and Workplace Pathways Grants program, visit the website: www.salvat ionarmy.org.au. Grant applications are now open. To apply, contact The Salvation Army’s bushfire disaster team on 1300 662 217 or by email.
Local people will help direct $14 million in funding for various recovery and rebuilding projects and programs in fire-affected areas, thanks to the generosity of Victorian Bushfire Appeal donors across the state and beyond.
The Victorian Bushfire Appeal’s $4 million Community Grants Program addresses short to medium-term recovery needs endorsed by local Community Recovery Committees across the Towong, Alpine and East Gippsland shires.
Community Recovery Committees (CRCs) are comprised of diverse groups of locals from bushfire affected areas who come together to guide councils and government on funding priorities.
Committees have been established in smaller communities across the Upper Murray region including representation from bushfire affected areas in the Snowy Valleys Shire.
The Corryong CRC was established at a meeting last week and comprises 12 memebrs with power to add.
Cathy Ross was elected as Chair and Assistant Chair is Amanda Meagher and the Communications
Further funds earmarked for recoveryManager is Mark Collins.
The committee has already received nominations for recovery projects and works in Corryong and the immediate district and a further opportunity for people to submit their ideas will be available soon.
This community-led approach ensures projects and programs are the right
fit for each community.Applications can be
submitted at any time and provisions will be in place to ensure no eligible community misses out. A closing date has not been set for the grants so all communities have the opportunity to apply for funding.
The Victorian Bushfire Appeal also announced $10 million for community
foundations to support local recovery over the long-term.
Existing foundations will be funded to support the Towong and Alpine local government areas and a new community foundation will be established to support East Gippsland.
Foundations will be entirely community-owned and led and will ensure that funding is provided to address local community recovery priorities.
They will be able to operate in-perpetuity, for the benefit of their communities.

You could almost call them crazy to suggest such a thing given that 2020 has been a wild year to date.
Bushfires, a global pandemic, entire cities being shut down, air travel grinding to a halt! Yet, despite all of this 2020 holds the potential to use our freedom to create change.
The local “Pong Community” is asking for help to make life better for some of the most vulnerable young people in the world, particularly those subjected to child slavery.
Usually, the Corryong Pongathon is held in a number of venues around town but due to lockdown restrictions this year’s event will be confined to one location.
Pongers turn adversity into opportunityAlthough the number
of Pongathon venues has decreased with less than 30 per cent of last year’s venues able to participate, the generosity of those ‘pongers’ has seen more than $255,000 raised in the past few weeks.
Corryong Pongers will be playing their part this Saturday October 3rd, shifting from the usual 24-hour format to a 9am to 5pm session in the outdoor courtyard of the Corryong Baptist Church. Guys
‘Pongers’ of all ages will be working together to raise money to fight the slavery industry.
In the past few years The Pong @ The Yong has raised more than $29,000 and has earned the Tiny Towns’ Hero title from Pong Central!
To comply with
restrictions, the event is limited to a maximum of 10 players at any one time, so get online at www.pingpongathon.com, search for the Corryong event to register for one of the two- hour time slots available.
For more information or help registering, contact Craig or Jen Stephens on 0447 495 422.
Online tax deductible donations can be also be made online or drop in and make a donation this Saturday.
“As a community we’ve been well supported since the bushfires with so many groups and even complete strangers wanting to help,” Jen Stephens said.
“Here’s an opportunity for us to give back - play ping pong and sponsor
someone.We have been united
in this and now, in 2020, we have the opportunity to stand and fight once again.”
Can a ping pong bat be used as a face mask? Perhaps not but Craig Stephens will be joining other local men on Saturday to raise money in the fight against slavery.

After months of discussion, the future direction of football and netball in the Upper Murray has been resolved following a league meeting on Monday evening.
While the league authorised a Working Party to develop a model for an Upper Murray club which potentially would seek entry to the Tallangatta league, a majority vote of clubs has rejected that option in preference to maintaining the Upper Murray Football Netball League (UMFNL) in 2021 and beyond.
The UMFNL has been under pressure in recent years with a decrease in the number of football participants across the league.
Clubs were presented with the Working Party’s modelling for a new club
which could be considered against the continuation of the UMFNL and were then asked to present motions to the meeting.
Through passing a resolution of a majority of clubs, the UMFNL plans to continue into 2021 with a minimum of four clubs and a desire to reinvigorate the league with the hope that reserve grade may again be possible with consideration given to changing junior ages to maximise participation.
Federal FNC presented a motion to move towards a new club entering the Tallangatta League, however, it was the only club in favour of a change of direction. Bullioh, which had unsuccessfully applied to transfer to the Tallangatta league 12 months ago, has now officially committed to the
UMFNL.“Throughout the
planning and consideration phases, it has been stated on numerous occasions that the direction and outcomes for football and netball in the Upper Murray was to be owned by the locals which has now occurred,” said AFL North East Border (NEB) general manager, John O’Donohue.
“The onus for each committed club is to now make the UMFNL viable and accept it for
whatever it may be to sustain local participation opportunities.
“Any suggestion of existing clubs or a new club seeking entry to the Tallangatta league from the Upper Murray has now been quashed.”
The League intends holding an annual general meeting when possible under Covid-19 restrictions where they can confirm club and team entries, age groups and other related matters for the league’s viability.
Local league gets the nodBullioh will get the chance to defend its 2019 premiership next year.
