A strategy concerning thedirection of future populationgrowth and housing in the shirewill soon be put before council.

The Population, Housing andResidential Settlement Strategy isdesigned to provide direction forresidential growth and form under arange of growth scenarios to meetanticipated needs up to 2035.

According to the draft version ofthe strategy, the Central GoldfieldsShire has seen only moderate andvariable population growth in pastyears, with a decreasing populationup until 2006.

However, from 2011 populationgrowth increased to an average of0.8 percent each year and accordingto the draft strategy — if growth likethis continues, by 2035 the CentralGoldfields Shire could see anywherebetween 815 and 1925 additionalresidents.

“At the moment we’ve got slowgrowth, some places are growing toofast which makes it hard to manage, but our sense is there’s both adesirable aspect to having somegrowth — it drives a lot of benefitsfor the community in terms ofeconomy — and that most people aresaying they would welcome furthergrowth,” Central Goldfields Shiremanager strategy and economicdevelopment Philip Schier said.

“If you don’t plan you can’t controloutcomes, this strategy is aboutensuring we as a council arepreparing for future growth and

gauging how much growth com-munity members would welcome.

“Particularly with ongoing growthin Melbourne and with Ballarat andBendigo both continuing to growstrongly, there is potential for quitea bit of growth in the shire in comingyears.”

Mr Schier said the strategy alsolooks at future housing needs, withnearly 70 percent of all dwellingapprovals in the past 10 years forMaryborough.

“For Maryborough particularly, the town really has an urban growthbarrier with forests so we’re comingup against the limits of growth inmost directions,” he said.

“One of the questions we’re askingis whether Carisbrook is the logicalnext area for taking some ofMaryborough’s traditional edge oftown growth.

“There also seems to be plenty ofcapacity for further growth inDunolly and that’s starting tobecome attractive for people, it’swithin commuting distance toBendigo and has a lot of charm andheritage character.

“Feedback from real estate agentsis that there’s an increasing interestin Dunolly.”

The draft strategy is expected togo before council at their Mayordinary council meeting.

“It’s hard to see relief from thiscoronavirus crisis at the moment, but in the next six, 12 or 18 months, having these strategies in place willhelp us deal with the impacts andmake the most of the opportunitiesavailable,” Mr Schier said.

prices looked at the start of the yearwith The Advertiser reporting inJanuary that Maryboroughresidents were paying as much as137.9 cents per litre for unleadedpetrol.

Metro owner JK said he was ableto get off the mark early with lowerprices after persistently calling forbetter prices.

“The prices in the international oilmarket have been droppingsignificantly and we knew if we justkept calling our head office againand again they would eventuallygive us a good price,” he said.

“So I was very persistent, callingthem every day to give me betterprices and eventually they gave in.

“I know these are difficult timesfor everyone and if we don’t lookafter each other who will?

“The community supports us, soit’s our responsibility to supportthem as well and look after themwhere we can.”

Petrol prices have beennotoriously high in Maryborough fora number of years, with TheAdvertiser reporting as far back as2013 that residents are payingupwards of 10 cents per litre more

Continued from Front PageMr Welch said the announcement

does not mean it will be a return to“business as usual” at the hospitaland said it’s unclear exactly whichprocedures will resume.

“Theatre will be back but it will beback in a very controlled andmodified fashion, it’s not back to

business as usual by any meansbecause we have to be highlycautious of our screening and ourprocesses,” he said.

“For us, the announcement willmore than likely mean a return tosome general surgery, urology andgynaecological work, but we’reanalysing exactly what theannouncement means for us here.

“Those coming in for surgery willbe screened for COVID-19 as willeveryone else coming into the healthservice — we have the highest levelof precaution in place to protect thecommunity and our staff.”

Acknowledging the resumption ofelective procedures will be a relief tosome, Mr Welch said others may alsobe kept waiting.

“In no way is this a negative forpeople waiting for surgery becausewe’re opening up again, but to bevery clear the government have putin very strict criteria of surgicalprocedures we can and can’t do andwe’re still working through that,” hesaid.

“There may be some people whounfortunately have to wait longer

and it’s been very difficult for them, but the government have mandatedand are monitoring strictly theprocedures we do.”

These arrangements will bereviewed by the National Cabinet onMay 11 to determine whenadditional elective surgeries andprocedures can recommence.

CHRISTIE HARRISONA petrol “price war” has been

sparked in Maryborough overthe past weeks with fuel pricesplummeting and cars lining uparound the block to fill up forless than $1 per litre.

Maryborough’s newest station,Metro Petroleum, was the first tolower its prices below $1, droppingunleaded petrol to 98.9 cents perlitre on April 17.

Unleaded E10 sat at 79.9 anddiesel at 102.9 and cars were linedup along Nolan Street over thatweekend to make full use of the lowprices.

United followed soon after withits unleaded petrol blitzing Metro’sby the following Tuesday afternoon, dropping to 96.8 cents per litre.

By Thursday morning Wool-worths Caltex and Coles Expresswere also displaying lower prices, though they are still yet to matchUnited and Metro, both offeringunleaded fuel for just over $1.

Since then prices haveplummeted even further. As ofyesterday, Metro and United wereboth offering unleaded for 89.9 perlitre, Caltex at 98.9 and ColesExpress at 99.9.

It’s a stark difference to the way

than in neighbouring regionalcentres.

Fuel prices are generally higherin regional areas due to a number offactors including lower populationand demand — meaning there arefewer petrol stations — which oftenleads to less competition, and pricesin regional centres can lag up to sixweeks behind changes in largercapital cities according to theAustralian Competition andConsumer Commission (ACCC).

JK said he’s pleased Metro’sprices have started a “price war” inMaryborough.

“I’ve been told since I dropped theprices it’s started a price war andthe other local stations have donethe same. I’m very happy with that,”he said.

“It gives people more options andthey can go where ever they want.People don’t have to go to Ballarator Bendigo to fill up with cheaperprices, especially in times like thesewith the coronavirus lockdown, theycan stay here. You can’t exploitpeople’s situation by giving themhigh prices.”

JK said it’s hard to say how longprices will remain low.

“It’s hard to say how long priceswill stay this low, I hope I can keepthem this way for as long as I can

and as long as the prices of theinternational market are low,” hesaid.

“Once the lockdown is lifted thenthe prices of the internationalmarket will go up because themarket will increase again.”

According to the ACCC last week, weekly average international crudeoil prices have decreased by aroundUS$50 per barrel since thebeginning of the year.

This has largely flowed throughto Australian wholesale petrolprices, which have decreased byaround 50 cents per litre in thesame period.

ACCC chair Rod Sims said thedrop is good news for Australianmotorists and that retailers shouldnot take advantage of the situation.

“The drop in the crude oil price isgood news for the Australianmotorists. At this time theAustralian economy needs all theassistance it can get, and lowerworld crude oil prices are one of thefew positives from current worldevents,” he said.

“Especially at this difficult time, retailers must not take advantage ofthe situation to increase theirprofits, but should pass on savingsto motorists.”

Maryboroughʼs United petrol station was one of the first to drop its prices tobelow $1 per litre earlier this month following a “price war” started by MetroPetroleum. 280420 05

Candles flickered to life andthe sounds of the Last Post rangout across the CentralGoldfields in the early hours ofSaturday morning as residentsgathered in their driveways tocommemorate a truly uniqueAnzac Day.

With services around the statecalled off by RSL Victoria due tocoronavirus restrictions, April 25looked very different this year aslocal Dawn Services, marches andceremonies were unable to go ahead.

Instead, community members litcandles to remember the sacrificemade by the Australian and NewZealand Army Corps during theFirst World War, taking to theirporches and driveways at 6 am and11 am.

Encouraged to play the Last Post, some of the shire’s musicallytalented residents picked upinstruments including Marybor-ough’s Bradley Saul who was up atdawn to play the Last Post andbrought out the bagpipes at 11 am toplay Amazing Grace whileneighbours watched on.

“Even though we couldn’t con-gregate together it was wonderful tosee the streets lined with tributecandlelight vigils,” he said.

“It was a great initiative for thecommunity to show their respect, it’ssomething that doesn’t happenduring a normal Anzac Dayceremony.

RILEY UPTONThe Pyrenees Shire Council

has launched a shop localcampaign in a bid to supportlocal businesses through thehardship caused by COVID-19.

Pyrenees Shire mayor TanyaKehoe said the campaign is designedto support local business whereverpossible and to prove the#PyreneesCommunityCan.

“We’re so proud of our businesses,we have such a high quality ofbusinesses in this shire and we’revery keen to support them, they’re

the backbone of our communitiesand how well they thrive,” she said.

“We’ve heard from a number ofbusinesses that they need supportand to be able to have a concerted, focussed campaign on that is thebest way we feel to support thosebusinesses.

“It not only supports andpromotes what they’re currentlyoffering, but also once we are past

this curve, those businesses will beable to go full steam ahead.”

Ms Kehoe urged communitymembers to like the Visit Avoca,Visit Pyrenees and DestinationBeaufort Facebook pages and to getinvolved with the daily competitionsbeing held on them.

COVID-19 deals big blow to tourism industry

Maffescioni Bus Lines and Travel Services business manager David Maffescionidescribed the impact of COVID-19 on the local tourism industry as “catastrophic”.

this year to be a write off, ourcoaches are parked and they won’tbe moving.”

Mr Maffescioni said the businesswill be propped up by contractedschool bus services for the timebeing but having already closed thetravel store in the MKM ShoppingCentre and suffering financial

losses, admits it will be hard. “I would say 75 percent of our

business is gone. In two days we saw$50,000 worth of tours walk out thedoor — they were just cancelled onthe spot and any business that copsthat is going to do it hard, but we’renot the only ones,” he said.

“The school contracts years ago

used to make up about 80 percent ofour business and we’ve workedreally hard to lessen that reliance onthem but now that’s all we’ve got inthat sense.

“We’re lucky to have thosecontracts that we can fall back onand we’re confident we’ll getthrough this with our heads abovewater, we’ve been in business for 45 years and are pretty solid butthere are a lot of unknowns at thisstage.”

Refunds for cancelled or post-poned events are being provided bythe business and Mr Maffescioniurged the community to supportlocal industry with travel vouchersand store credit for when businessreturns as usual.

“We’re asking people to be patientand remember that this will be overat some point,” he said.

“When it is over, we urge people totravel, even if you don’t travel withus, travel with who you normally doand support them.”

Similarly impacted by theCOVID-19 pandemic, Hollands BusLines and Coach Tours have seenbusiness grind to a halt in just amatter of days.

Almost all of the business’ 25coach fleet have been put on holdand managing director Phil Hollandsaid the travel side of the business isnow “nonexistent”.

“It’s going to be tough for a longtime and even when the virus goesaway, the travel industry is notgoing to recover and kick off againlike other businesses,” he said.

“People’s lifestyles and financesare going to be decimated whenthings go back to normal and travelwill be one of the last things thatwill kick off because people won’t beable to afford it.

“The travel side of the business isnonexistent now, from day trips totours and holidays, it’s all stopped.”

A staple of the local travel and busline industry for close to 50 years,Mr Holland said as upsetting as it is,the business is trying to staypositive.

“You spend a lifetime putting it alltogether with the business and it’sall taken away from you in 10minutes,” he said of the quicklychanging situation.

“We’ve got to stay positive andfocus on where we’re at to try andsalvage what we’ve got left andmake sure once this passes we’restill there at the end of the day.

“It’s the unknown, it’s notsomething we’ve got a blueprint towork by because it’s not somethingthat’s happened before that I’maware of. We’re all in new territoryand we’ve just got to work through itas best we can.”

RILEY UPTONDozens of coaches will remain

stationary for the remainder ofthe year as the local tourism andtravel industry are dealt a“catastrophic” blow amid thecoronavirus (COVID-19) pan-demic.

Maffescioni Bus Lines and TravelServices as well as Hollands BusLines and Coach Tours will leavesome 30 coaches lying dormant forthe forseeable future as concerts, musicals, trips and tours across thecountry are cancelled or postponed.

Set to be the biggest year forMaffescioni’s with their firstinternational tour booked, businessmanager David Maffescioni said heexpects the whole year will be a“write off” for the business.

“It was going to be our year, it wasgoing to be the biggest year we’veever had and now we’ll be happy tojust get through to the end of it,” hesaid.

“It’s catastrophic, every tour, trip, concert and musical has been 100percent cancelled at least through tothe end of September but we expectit will probably go past that.

“It’ll be longer before inter-national tours are available againand once everything is under controlin Australia we can start looking atdomestic tours, but we’re expecting

Centre (MEC) is seeking paststudents to connect through anew alumni program currentlybeing set up at the school.

The search is on for students whoattended MEC and its foundationschools — Maryborough RegionalCollege, Maryborough High Schooland Maryborough Technical College— and will be run throughOurschool, a not-for-profit alumniprogram which helps statesecondary schools in Australia buildalumni networks.

MEC’s Wayne Belcher has beenappointed as coordinator for theprogram and said he’s lookingforward to getting started andfinding past students.

“I’m looking forward to it and tothe challenge of finding formerstudents,” he said.

“The first priority is to build aprofile, we’re doing that throughLinkedIn and other social media andfrom there we will build a databaseof alumni.

“I’ve already spoken to somepeople who are keen to get on board,a couple have already been back tospeak at our careers days.”

Mr Belcher said he hopes theprogram will help inspire currentstudents.

“The former students will all beinvited to join and have acontribution to future students,” hesaid.

“It’s letting the current studentsknow there are opportunities outthere, whatever field they choose. It’s trying to instill some aspirationin the current students.

“There’s been some great successstories out of Maryborough in thesports world and in all sorts of fields.

“Opportunities are out there foreverybody and these alumni arehere to demonstrate that.”

While he will be contacting asmany people as possible, Mr Belcherencouraged former students of allages to reach out to MEC.

“Even the students who havefinished school in the last few yearswill be a valuable resource for us,”he said.

“Students can feel free to get intouch with me.”

Ourschool CEO and co-founderCaroline Milburn said she’s lookingforward to helping set the programup at MEC and inspire localstudents.

“We’re delighted to work withMEC which has a strong and proudtradition of educating young peoplein Maryborough,” she said.

“The rationale behind thisprogram is that unlike privateschools and universities who havetraditionally connected with theiralumni, the public high schoolsystem has never had that tradition. But you can see the benefits privateschools get from having an engagedand well organised alumni commu-nity.

“We know many public highschool graduates do want to giveback to their schools in a meaningfulway but there was no infrastructureor service to make that happen, a lotof public high schools don’t have thetime or resources to do that.

“We reached out to public highschools principals to see if theywanted to join the program andMEC has signed on.”

Ms Milburn said the program is“student-centred” and can beinspiring for regional students.

“This is a student-centred alumniprogram, it allows those paststudents to become involved inmany ways like bringing them backto the school to inspire and motivatecurrent students about study andcareer pathways,” she said.

“It can be very inspiring forstudents in regional areas to seethose former students come back.

“There may also be some alumniwho don’t have time to come backbut they might want to contribute inother ways like offering workexperience at their business, establishing a student scholarshipor contribute financially to a schoolfundraising project and we canfacilitate that.”

Any former students who want toget in touch with the program cancontact Wayne Belcher [email protected] or at MEC on5461-7900.

Backyard gardeners told totake care with chemicals

Backyard gardeners are beingurged to make sure they readand follow the instructions onthe labels of any chemicalproducts they may be using intheir home gardens.

A growing interest in gardeninghas increased vegetable seedlingsales from nurseries, which willincrease the number of peopletreating pests and diseases in theirgardens.

Agriculture Victoria statewidechemicals specialist Steven Fieldsaid there are some simpleprinciples home gardeners shouldkeep in mind if they choose to usepesticides.

“Home gardeners should takecare to read and follow theinstructions on the labels ofpesticides they are using to ensuresafe use. The instructions are thereto manage the risks of using apesticide,” he said.

“If you don’t follow the labelinstructions you may increase therisk to yourself and othersunnecessarily.”

Following the label instructionsinclude:

• Only using the pesticide oncrops that are specified on the label

are the amount of time that mustelapse between when the crop issprayed and when it can beharvested.

“Following the withholding periodis critical as it allows the pesticide tobreakdown to an appropriate level,”he said.

Home gardeners should also bemindful of the time of day they arespraying and be aware of possibleimpacts of pesticide use on foragingbees.

Bees are highly susceptible tosome pesticide products, so atten-tion must be paid to any labelstatements relevant to bees.

Mr Field said there are also anumber of highly effective non-chemical control options worthconsidering when dealing with pestsand diseases, which will help toreduce the reliance on pesticides.

“By taking the time and care to dothings correctly, pesticide users canmake sure they reduce the risks tothemselves and the environmentand grow fresh, delicious produce inthe process,” he said.

I’m pleased to report toreaders of The MaryboroughDistrict Advertiser that theVictorian Government isextending the $20,000 FirstHome Owner Grant for peoplebuying or building a new homein regional Victoria for an extra12 months, in another measureto support Victorians throughthe coronavirus pandemic.

This is really great news for firsthome owners in the CentralGoldfields Shire.

It means the regional grant —which had been due to end in June— will be extended until the middleof 2021.

It gives more Victorians theopportunity to live locally in placeslike Maryborough, Dunolly andCarisbrook and enter the market forthe first time, while also providingcertainty to the local constructionindustry as we deal with the

impacts of coronavirus.Modelling by the Department of

Treasury and Finance predictsproperty prices may fall by up tonine percent by the end of the year,as well as the unemployment ratemore than doubling to 11 percent inthe September quarter.

In 2017, the Labor Governmentdoubled the regional First HomeOwner Grant from $10,000 to$20,000 to tackle housing afforda-bility and help Victorians realisetheir real estate dreams.

Since then, more than 8800regional First Home Owner Grantshave been provided, savingVictorian families $176 million.

To be eligible for the grant, thepurchaser or purchasers must be

first home buyers buying or buildinga property valued at $750,000 or lessand it must be used as the principalplace of residence for 12 continuousmonths following settlement.

The regional grant is part of thegovernment’s Homes for Victorianspackage, which also offers a $10,000First Home Owner Grant for eligible purchases in metropolitanMelbourne and offers stamp dutyexemptions and discounts for newhomes up to $750,000.

We know the coronaviruspandemic is making it even tougherfor young people to achieve theirdreams of home ownership andthat’s why we’re extending thegrant which has helped so manyregional Victorians in the past.

With COVID-19 infectionrates lowering across the stateand the nation, it is time weturned to how we can makeplans for a positive recoveryat a local level.

So far, we have been incrediblyfortunate in the Central Gold-fields recording just the oneCOVID-19 case.

Council is establishing anEconomic Response and RecoveryTaskforce which will work on aresponse to the economic crisisand act as an advisory committeeto council’s Economic Develop-ment and Tourism teams.

The taskforce will allow us tohave a collaborated approach inour recovery.

Recently we hosted an onlineforum with some of our localbusinesses to gain a furtherunderstanding of the significantimpact of COVID-19.

This forum enabled us todiscuss some key issues andidentify areas that council and the

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITORRReeggiioonnaall nneewwss ““mmoorreeiimmppoorrttaanntt tthhaann eevveerr””

As the COVID-19 pandemicsweeps across the nation andimpacts our daily lives in waysthat we never thoughtpossible, it is now that localnews has become moreimportant than ever.

The Maryborough DistrictAdvertiser has watched mediaoutlets which have been servicingtheir communities for decadesclose their doors — as countlessbusinesses have as a result ofcoronavirus — and it is with utterrelief that the Federal Govern-ment’s measures to help sustainregional media businesses, suchas ours was announced.

The State Government has alsostepped up to support regionalprint media, announcing one pageof print advertising and digitaladvertising in more than 100regional outlets each week for sixmonths.

As we, like many others, feelthe brunt of government restric-tions, we have adapted to newways of delivering The Addy sothat we can keep the Mary-borough and surrounding com-munity informed like we have forthe past 165 years.

Regional media has never beenso important, to keep thecommunity up-to-date with howthe situation is unfolding and howthat impacts our community likeno other news outlets or socialmedia sites will.

To have a trusted media sourcedelivering not only updates on

COVID-19, including confirmingcases locally, to sharing good newsstories and how our community, council, businesses and residentsare adapting is integral at a timesuch as this.

Before this month’s announce-ment, our general managerMichael Rossi had alreadycommitted to publishing for aslong as possible and with thislifeline, which includes a $50million Public Interest NewsGathering Fund, it gives usreassurance that The Addy willcontinue to serve the Marybor-ough and surrounding communitythrough this pandemic.

Minister for RegionalCommunications Mark Coultonsaid the announcement is apositive move for the nation’sregional news organisations, which are often the sole source ofnews for people in rural andremote areas.

“Never has Australians’ desireto be informed been stronger thannow during this unfolding healthand economic emergency,” he said.

“Despite this obvious demandfor their services, media organi-sations in country areas aresuffering serious financialpressure as the pandemicdecimates advertising revenueand in many cases increasesoperating costs.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITORFunding warning

The Federal Government’s recentPublic Interest News Gatheringprogram announced earlier thismonth could potentially hand fundsallocated to small and regionalpublishers to the large and powerfulcommercial television and radionetworks and media conglomeratessuch as News Corporation.

Country Press Australia, onbehalf of its 140 independentregional and local newspapermembers, has been in discussionswith the Federal Minister forCommunications, Cyber Safety andthe Arts, Paul Fletcher, to preventthe allocation guidelines for thePING program producingunintended outcomes.

The Regional and SmallPublishers Innovation Fund wasestablished in 2018 specifically tocounter the media reform laws thatfavoured the large public companiesand help sustain diverse media inAustralia.

This month’s announcement toexpand those funds to potentiallyallow large media companies to

access those funds does the completereverse.

The ACMA site itself states “TheInnovation Fund is a three-year, $48million grant program, which beganin 2018. It is part of the AustralianGovernment’s $60 million Regionaland Small Publishers Jobs andInnovation package”.

It has become clear that regionaland small publishers could besacrificed to the more powerfulvoices of the commercial televisionand radio networks and mediaconglomerates such as NewsCorporation unless careful consider-ation is given to the fundingframework.

It is unfortunate that the conglo-merates seem to have the ear ofgovernment, yet regional and smallpublishers have the ears of 140communities across Australia in thecase of CPA, that they continue toserve.

That News Limited could nowshare in a funding programspecifically targeted to regional andsmall publishers, concocted to pushthrough changes to media owner-ship rules of massive benefit to them

and other media conglomerates tothe further detriment of regionaland small publishers will only be tothe detriment of society and thevaried media voices in this country.

The original turnover cap of $30million must be maintained toensure the continued integrity of thefund.

The primary purpose of theRegional and Small PublishersJournalism and Innovation Pro-gram, the “production of publicinterest journalism as the primarypurpose” of a recipient must beretained as part of the fundingcriteria. The ACCC DPI Final reportalso identified the continued sup-port of Public Interest Journalism inregional, local and remotecommunities as an area deservingparticular attention and funding.

The funding criteria must includea clear correlation to the directresources applied by entities to theoriginal production of locallygenerated public interest journalismin regional and local communities.

ITALIAN supercar-maker Ferrari has steppedup to the plate in the fightagainst the COVID-19 virusafter announcing it willfund a series of initiativesin and around its hometown of Maranello.

Four main programs havebeen selected by executives, with the almost 2 million euro($A3.42m) of funding comingcourtesy of chairman JohnElkann, CEO Louis Camilleriand board of directors allpledging their fullcompensation from April tothe end of the year while thesenior management team isdonating 25 percent worth oftheir salaries for the sameperiod.

Aside from Maranello, theother two major centresbenefitting from Ferrari’sefforts are Fiorano andFormigine with the initiativesthemselves revolving aroundthe supply of much neededequipment (medical, education) and food.

The first of these beingrolled out is the purchasing ofCOVID-19 test kits and

diagnostic equipment for thePoliclinico di Modena andother hospitals in Baggiovaraand Sassuolo.

No details as to what kindof vehicle or when it will behanded over have beenreleased, although it is highlyunlikely to be a vehicle fromFerrari’s own line-up.

On the education front, batches of notebooks, tabletsand portable modems will bedistributed to both primaryand secondary schools acrossMaranello, Fiorano andFormigine to cater for remotelearning and facilitate onlinelessons.

In an added bonus for theschools, they will be able tokeep all of the devices oncethe pandemic is over.

Closer to home, anundisclosed amount of fundinghas also been allocated to thepurchase of food and otheressential items for strugglingfamilies directly impacted butCOVID-19.

“Further initiatives will beconfirmed in the region overthe coming weeks,” the brandsaid in a statement.

COMMERCIAL vehiclesand connectivity areidentified as top prioritiesfor the Ford MotorCompany as it executes aseries of senior leadershipand organisational changesto its global automotiveoperations amid the currentcoronavirus epidemic anduncertain economicconditions ahead.

This bodes well for theAustralian-based Asia-PacificProduct Development Centre, which is the internationaldesign and engineering centrefor the all-important Rangermid-size pick-up that enteredthe North American marketearly last year and which isnow central to a newly createddedicated commercial vehicle(CV) business for the UnitedStates and Canada.

This focus on commercialvehicles is designed to turnFord’s leadership in thesegment — underpinned byAmerica’s best-selling vehicle, the F-Series, the number-onevan, Transit, and the fast-growing Ranger, which rackedup 21,000 units in the firstquarter of this year — into a“dedicated growth business”and is one of the core tenets of a“10-week deep-dive” led bychief operating officer JimFarley aimed at sharpening theBlue Oval brand’s focus in anumber of key areas.

“Under Jim Farley’sleadership, we are empowering

a talented and diverse group ofleaders — from inside andoutside the company — tocontinue to drive ourtransformation into a higher-growth, higher-marginbusiness,” said Ford Motor Cochief executive Jim Hackett.

Mr Farley added that thecompany was moving “with arenewed sense of urgency toimprove the fitness of thebusiness and improve ourlaunches, while at the sametime modernising Ford in away that plays to ourstrengths”.

“That means putting theright team of global leaders inplace, streamlining the way wework, embracing the power ofconnectivity, data and AI, andturning our leadership incommercial vehicles into adedicated growth business,” hesaid.

Reporting directly to Mr

Farley and taking on anexpanded role that includes thenew CV business unit is KumarGalhotra, who was previouslypresident of North America butnow presides over a newlycreated Americas andInternational Markets Group.

Reporting to him is LisaDrake, who continues as vice-president of global purchasingbut is also now COO for NorthAmerica, charged with leadingthe push — “through cashconservation and profit actions”— to return Ford’s business inthe region back to a 10 percentEBIT margin.

The CV operation will bedriven in large part by generalmanager Ted Cannis, a three-decade Ford veteran who forthe past two-and-a-half yearshas served as global director ofelectrification — an indication,if ever we saw one, of the car-maker’s intention to build a

cache of battery-electricvariants across its core-strength commercial modellines.

Mr Cannis will work closelywith Ford of Europe’s generalmanager of commercialvehicles, Hans Schep, whooversees development of theTransit, while Mark Ovendenremains the prime overseer ofthe Australian operations in hiscontinuing role as president ofthe International MarketsGroup, which covers almost 100regions including Australasia,ASEAN, Africa, India, Mexico, the Middle East and SouthKorea.

Mr Ovenden now reports toLyle Watters, who takes on anexpanded role as president ofSouth America andInternational Markets Group(reporting to Mr Galhotra). MrWatters was previously chieffinancial officer and vice-president of finance andstrategic planning for Ford ofEurope.

On the connected-carcapability front, Ford has hireda retired colonel from theIsraeli Military IntelligenceCorps, Gil Gur Arie, as its chiefof global data insight andanalytics, reporting to MrFarley and bringing “vast andunique experience to Ford inbig data and AI, informationtechnology, digital-age human-machine aspects and multi-domain large scale analytics”.

Anzac Day 2020 was unlikeany other.

For the first time in a century thestreets were empty, there were nolocal dawn services, mid-morningmarches or afternoon two-upmatches.

Instead, Australians were askedto unite and recognise past andcurrent armed service personnel bystanding in their driveways or livingrooms at 6 am Saturday for a dawnservice with a difference.

Some were disappointed thatthere were no marches or otherpublic gatherings this year, butAnzac Day 2020 is another way we

all adapted our national life to thechallenge of the greatest publichealth crisis for a century.

People may have been separatedbut they were united to rememberthe generations of service, sacrificeand the service women and menserving in our name now.

Though our streets were empty, people in the surrounding towns ofTimor, Dunolly, Bealiba, Avoca andTalbot did not forget the Anzacs andreturned veterans.

Our photographs show the solemnfloral tributes left by locals at theirtown’s war memorials.

Kestelman and includes prominentmembers of the basketball andbusiness communities.

Coten said the preservation of allbasketball competitions is crucialgiven it has one of the highestparticipation levels of any sport inthe nation.

“Basketball is not immune to theimpact of COVID-19 and, like therest of the community, we need to doeverything we can to get throughthese challenging times, but alsowork together to restart the sportwhen the time is right,” he said.

“Basketball is one of Australia’shighest participation sports withover 1.5 million active participants.

“Importantly, 38 percent of ourparticipants are female and we havetwo of the leading men’s andwomen’s leagues in the world in theNBL and WNBL.

“The game employs tens ofthousands of people across thecountry and generates significanteconomic impact as well as a rangeof health and social benefits for thewider community across bothgenders and all ages that will beneeded more than ever as werecover.”

Kestelman echoed the importanceof every level of the sport, but

stressed that game attendance is acrucial part for national codes toremain sustainable, making theCOVID-19 situation particularlydifficult.

“Unlike other sports, basketballleagues do not derive the bulk oftheir revenue from broadcastagreements,” he said.

“Under the restrictions imposedby COVID-19, the sport has come toa standstill for now. This includesnot just the NBL and WNBL butalso Australia’s premier winterleague NBL1, the 3x3Hustle and allcommunity and grassroots leaguesright around the country.

“The NBL attracted almost onemillion people last season and isnow widely considered the second-best domestic basketball league inthe world after the NBA. We are anentertainment product built for liveattendances.

“Unlike other codes, basketballcannot fall back on revenue fromtelevision if restrictions are still inplace to crowds and would needassistance. We are not seekingspecial priority, but rather simplyasking not to be forgotten to ensurewe can continue to deliver the sportthat we and so many Australianslove.”

Despite only returning to the MDCA two seasons ago, Maryboroughʼs SamBartlett was the most prolific A grade runscorer of the decade with 607 runs inthe 2018/19 cricket season. 170120 37

Maryborough’s Sam Bartlettblitzed the scene with an impressive607 runs in 2018/19 which turnedout to be the highest season total forany A grade batsman within the last10 years.

He then went on to win the KenGibbs medal that season, but wasunlucky to miss out on the battingaward with an average of 55.18 —2.7 short of winner Will Collicoat(Colts Phelans) who made 463 runswith an innings average of 57.88.

Jayden Templeton (Laane) was2017/18’s best batsman fair andsquare, making 496 runs at anunbeaten average of 93.80 whileMaryborough’s Corey Taylor made510 runs the season before and tookout the batting award with anaverage of 63.75.

In 2015/16 Collicoat made themost A grade runs in 2015/16despite being an underage player atthe time, racking up 435 runs butbeing pipped on the average withLaane’s Liam Mottram taking theaward with 46.29 per innings.

The Maryborough dynasty wasdrawing to a close during 2014/15,with the Owls going on to claim

their fifth premiership in a row, helped greatly by stalwart MartinDell who made 425 runs that homeand away season with the highestqualifying average as well for theaward.

It’s no surprise that in the2013/14, 2012/13 and 2011/12premiership years a Maryboroughbatsman, who has since hung upthe whites, made the most amountof runs in the grade for three yearsrunning.

Marc Cassidy made 471 @ 58.88in 2011/12, the highest total andaverage and 435 runs in 2012/13and also took out the grade averagewith 33.46.

Cassidy’s teammate Dell andColts Phelans product BrandenWagstaff ruined a triple strike in2013/14, with he and Wagstaffdrawing in 406 runs square, butDell besting them both with anaverage innings score of 40.63.

Taking it right back to the start ofthe decade, Dean Nalder ofCarisbrook made 350 runs in ninematches, an average of 43.75 perinnings and the highest of the gradehowever, former Clunes cricketernow AFL star Nick Hind had a

winning average of 45.71 in thesame amount of innings’.

Surprisingly, the highest A gradescorer within the last decade wasnot any of the forementionedbatsmen, with Creswick’s JoelAntonio setting the bar at 151against Laanecoorie in 2018/19.

Bramble was a close runner-upwith 145 in the 2019/20 one-daygrand final for Laane followed byCassidy in 2014/15 against Beaufortwith 125 not out.

Even more shocking, is the factthat the highest score made fromany grade during the last 10 yearscame during an under 16s game.

Liam Radlof, who is still a prolificrunscorer in the local competitionand serving as vice captain for theMill’s A grade side, smacked anunbeaten 314 runs against Avocaback in 2014 which still stands asone of the most impressive knocksin the league.

Beaufort’s Nathan Clarke cameclose this past season with awhopping 297 run total in a one-dayB grade game against MKM, butRadlof still left the decade with thebiggest single score.

ASHLYNE McINNESAn array of sports equipment

worth in excess of $500 headedto Asteria last week to keeplocals fit, healthy andentertained during isolation.

Everything from a bocci set tonetballs, footballs and frisbees weredelivered on Thursday from equalopportunity sports provider, Reclinkas part of the Reclink Sports Shareprogram.

The program is designed toengage those in the community whoare most vulnerable to combat thedifficulties of isolation by providingphysical equipment and onlinevideos to go with it to encourageparticipation.

Reclink sports coordinatorAndrew Dunn estimates thatbetween 30 and 40 people locallybenefit from Reclink’s football andcricket programs which run in thedistrict and hopes the equipmentwill be put to good use byindividuals and their families.

“Until we can play footy and wecan play cricket, it’s good for peopleto be able to stay active in their own home with this equipment,” hesaid.

“We’re still encouraging our

members to walk their dog, go for arun or have a kick of the footy or hita tennis ball against a wall to keepactive.

“We’re really happy to be able todonate this equipment for people touse because isolation can be tough

and people might be inclined to stayat home and watch the tv and notget outdoors, but there are activitiesthat you can do by yourself.”

Equipment can be accessed bycontacting Asteria Services on 5459-0300.

Blair Lilford and Andrew Dunn were impressed with the Reclink Sports Sharehaul which included everything from footballs to tennis equipment to keep localsactive. 280420 14
