Google +Google +By Terryn KellyBy Terryn Kelly

There is a new social media networking site on the rise—Google+. Will this network prove to be a competition for the ever so popular Facebook which made My Space a distant memory?

This new user interface is growing in numbers every day. People are quickly becoming addicted to the new site even though there is still something left to be desired.

This website has shortcomings just like other social networks but with time it may give Facebook a run for its money if they can meet all the requested needs from users.

Members weigh in with thoughts about the website.Tobin Davies, has been a member since last year. He found out about

Google+ from the different news sites he follows on Twitter and by word of mouth.

“Presently, Facebook and Twitter definitely have first mover’s advantage, and Google+ has some ground to make up before it can really contend,” Davies said.

Percy Hudson has been a member for four months. “I would definitely recommend this network to others. I would not say it is

better than Facebook, but it is better than most networking sites. The most common problem that many users are running into is that they

have fewer friends to chat with on this network, because not many people know about it.

The website differs from many because a user cannot simply create an account. One must first receive an invite from an active member.

“I would recommend people to join Google+, but it is still limited by the lack of users. I think that Google+ has the potential to be great, because it will offer more features in the long run,” Davies said.

Google+ has released an app for i Phones. The new site has many new features and even offers new users a demo tour of how everything works.

To organize friends, there are circles which allow the user to group people in a category. For example, one may have a circle for work associates so everything shared would be worked related whereas another circle could be for family, and personal things could be shared.

Hangouts allow the user to video chat with up to ten friends at the same time, and Huddle is used for group chatting. There is also the common photo feature that allows the user to upload pictures from a camera or instantly from an Android phone.

Sparks allows the user to add their interest. Then the topics that pertain to those subjects are shown to them. If the member chooses to do so, they can click on the topic and share it with a circle friends. “Google+ is pretty easy to navigate. The main thing is that it is not quite laid out the same way as Facebook which is what most people are accustomed to, so there is a learning curve involved,” Davies said.

What's the Baylorian?By: Terryn Kelly

UMHB's Baylorian has finally turned 100. Years of artworks, poetry, and short stories have graced the pages of past editions.Assistant Professor and Department Chairperson of the college of humanities in the English Department Dr. Jacky Dumas and faculty advisor of the Bayalorian, gives some insight as to exactly what the publication is.He said, “The Baylorin is an in house journal that is completely put together by students. It only publishes works by the students, faculty and alumni. It is more of a community building type of thing. A lot of the times the alumni contributors are former student-editors, so there is an obligation and connection between the alumni and the current students.”

Although the Baylorian has been around for a century, many people still are not aware of the publication.

“I think it is one of our best kept secrets, there are not a whole lot of publications. In the research that I have done… very rarely do you have a school that prints a journal, much less two. We have Windhover Journal which is an international journal, and then we have the Baylorian which is strictly a student run journal,” Dumas said.

The Baylorian is only published once a year, in the spring. It is a yearlong process that begins in the fall. There is a workshop in the fall that is used for ground work and bringing attention to the publication. There is also a spring workshop which serves to eventually publish the chosen works. There is no charge for the journal and Dumas said this year they are working toward an online journal.

Learning of the centennial anniversary was actually a pleasant surprise.“We actually did not know that this was the 100th year... we found out that Betty Sue

BeBe had issues that dated all the way back to the first issue. So what we did was publish a poem from the first edition to the 50th to the 75th; those 25 year marks,” he said.

Dumas has actually read some of the poems and said they are not dated and still very relevant.

“The poems are actually universal. A lot of the stuff they put in those early poems still apply today,” he said.

The University’s students have benefited from the publication in many ways. Students are able to build their resumes and have real hands on experience with editing and learning different software programs as well as the chance to have some of their artwork, or poems published.

Senior psychology major and artwork Editor Hannah Romo will have two poems, Innate Desires and Barriers appear in the publication.

She said, “Poetry has always been my passion since I was young.”Senior communication major Jasmine Austin is the poetry editor and has enjoyed

helping with Baylorian and is excited about the publication turning 100.“I think it gives us another sense of history. It is so easy to say how old UMHB is, but

to see something that has actually been around for 100 consecutive years-when others see that, they will be like wow! This school really has a legacy,” She said.

College Students Mentoring Kids in the Community

By: Terryn Kelly

For a few years now, UMHB has incorporated a new way to serve the community in the form of mentoring. This program gives the opportunity for the mentor and student to build long-lasting relationships with one another.

Professor in the college of Education - Exercise and Sport Science Department, Dr. Mickey Kerr said there is no formal name for the mentor program, which began in September of 2010. He said, “Chelsie at Tyler Elementary called and wanted to know if we had any students that would like

to come over and mentor a child. The students go over to the school in Belton, and they will meet during the child’s lunch, this is just once a week,” He said. “They just go over there and talk with them and visit with them and just kind of are an older brother or sister to serve as a role model or mentor.”

During the spring semester earlier this year, 12 people mentored. The program appreciates all students who wish to volunteer, but there are stipulations that must be met in order for them to participate.

“I get the names to Chesie Kelley and they of course have to go through background checks, and then once that is complete, she gives me the names and times of students available, and I help to match up our students with their students,” Kerr said.

Although Kerr has said he has never officially been a mentor to someone, he has offered free batting and pitching lessons. He thinks it is very important for others to volunteer whether they play sports or not.

“I have always encouraged our students to volunteer. We volunteer at track meets and for Special Olympics and things like that. This is just another aspect of it. I want them to get into the habit of wanting to get involved in the community wherever they go to school or work at,” Kerr said. “I think this is a great opportunity to serve as a role model. Our youth really needs role models particularly with a lot of the scandals going on today. I think it is really important for students of college age to realize how valuable volunteering is.”

One of the students who participated in the program this year, is senior sport management major Javicz Jones. He hopes that by mentoring these children, they will learn to choose the right paths in life.

“My teacher Dr. Kerr mentioned that we have a volunteer program and as soon as he said that I jumped right on it. I have been a mentor for about a year now for the school. I have always wanted to be a role model; there are a lot of things that come with that responsibility,” Jones said. “You have to live right and do the right thing the right way, especially when you get around the children,” He said. You have to talk to them and try to find out what is going on in their lives.”

Communities and Schools Site Director Chelsie Kelley calls herself the mediator of the program.

“I help to get everyone together and if their kid is not here I will call the volunteer and let them know. The children love when they come to visit,” She said.

Prior to her job, Kelley has mentored before, and the experience has made quite an impact on the career she has chosen to have.

“I loved it and that is why I have my job today. I am kind of like the social worker on campus. Just having that relationship with kids beforehand, before my job, kind of gave me the experience and that let me know that this is what I wanted to do for my job,” She said.

The McLennan Animal Rescue Coalition is sponsoring a website to help owners who have lost their pets reunite. The site is free and covers a 14 county area of Central Texas. Since the site launched earlier in 2012, there have been several successful cases.

Volunteers can post sightings of a pet that appears to be lost. The website is also linked to Facebook; their page is titled Centex Lost Pets.

“We do not post contact information in Facebook,” Treasurer for the McLennan Animal Rescue Coalition Lisa Dragoo said. “We refer people back to the website if they need to contact the person who posted the animal. Eventually, as we get more volunteer help, we want to have more Facebook pages dedicated specifically to animals in each town.”

Dragoo is the person who decided there must be a better way to reunite owners and their pets faster before other actions must be taken.

“In a brainstorming session with the former adoption manager at Humane Society of Central Texas here in Waco, I commented how nice it would be for people who lost pets and the people who found them to make a connection before the animal had to be taken to the shelter. I searched on the internet for ideas and found this site already in use in North Carolina. Through some generous donors, I had a copy of the site made for our area,” she said.

Even with the website available, Dragoo still thinks owners should proceed to post flyers or posters with the missing pet on them. They should also call their animal control officer and visit their local shelters daily to look for their pets.

The quicker an animal is found the better. Since shelters are only a temporary home, the animal may have to be put down in order to make space for the growing number of animals that come in to the shelters on a daily basis.

“We are trying to get the word out about the website. If everyone is looking in the same place, it is so easy to make the match. If the lost pet can be reunited with its owner…it doesn’t have to be taken to the shelter,” Dragoo said.
