Last year, Central Texan customers lined up at various stores to receive the best deals for Black Friday. This tradition has been around for years, and many people say they have found great bargains in the past. Retail companies are now gearing up for the rush again with the shopping extravaganza being merely weeks away.

With the change in the economy in recent years, one must ask if these so- called discounts are really worth the wait in line? It seems as if these big companies are preying on the fact many consumers' pockets are strapped for cash, and make them believe they will be saving money if they purchase items specifically on this day.

2011 was my first and last time participating in the madness with my mother and cousins. We began our hunt at inside Wal-Mart at 9p.m.and knew exactly what we are there for: a $2 waffle maker, a $19 shredder, a

$24 mp3 player and $1.97 white towels. To our surprise we walk in to find the store is already crowded, and people are actually camped out in the aisles sitting in lawn chairs. We have no baskets so we must improvise with a laundry basket on wheels.

We turn down the electronics isle to find a printer we heard was on sale. Tempers flare as parents curse each other out because someone cut in the waiting line for a Wii, true colors are now shown. People are so anxious to receive the deals; they ignore the sign that clearly says not available until 10pm.

Fellow bargain hunter Jessica Rubio went to the same store as, I but in a different city witnessed what happened when an individual tried to purchase an item before the allotted time.

She said, “An older woman was trying to purchase a printer that was on sale. The cashier gave caution that the register most likely would not let her ring it up, and it did not. The lady’s face turned red as she talked so bad to the cashier, as if it was her fault she chose to get the item early. People get so crazy at this time of year, in the name of material things.”

Although my friends and family found what they looking for, there was nothing to my liking for me to spend my hard-earned pennies on. We visited other stores, and stood outside in the cold, only for me to come back empty handed. It was a waste of my time and energy.

Rubio feels there is a downside to all the hype about the potential savings.

“Unfortunately, I do think people spend way more money during this time than during the regular season. These companies repeatedly advertise how much they could be pocketing. They make it appear that they must have the products while they are cheap, before they run out of supplies. So, there is an opportunity for saving, but I think a lot of customers just end up overspending in the first place.”

Only time will tell if this year’s Black Friday sales will have better deals. I may change my tune if something happens to catch my eye, online that is.

Every year on November 11th the federal holiday known as Veteran’s Day is celebrated. Post offices, banks and elementary schools close in observance of this day. With the growing number of military people who are attending UMHB, the question arises, why do college students not get Veteran’s Day off when it falls on a weekday?

The men and women who have served our country deserve this day of rest. The holiday should also be used as a time to remember those whom we have lost over the years. Some veterans feel that since the school does not close for this day, they have not truly been embraced by the campus.

Education major and former solider Steve Camps said, “I do not want to think of UMHB as a school that only wants us vets because of their money and not recognize our sacrifices. The fact the school spends money on billboards recruiting soldiers to attend the university shows a commitment to the money but what about the sacrifices?”

With the post 911 GI Bill in effect there is a guaranteed tuition that the soldiers have earned which means more soldiers will be coming to this school.

Certification Coordinator Justen Aguillon said, “There are 340 active duty members that are from the military in Ft. Hood. There are the actual veteran’s that have served in the military and then the veteran dependents which includes the children of the vet’s or individuals that are still in the military and their spouses,” he said. “The 340 number accounts from 10 to 11 percent of the actual UMHB population. You are talking about a number that is quite significant in attending here.”

It would be a nice acknowledgment to the veteran’s if we were out of school for this day. There are many factors to be examined when determining which holidays will be observed.

Dr. Steve Oldham Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs said, “When we consider the calendar, we obviously consider what the federal holidays are, and we try to accommodate those as much as we can. One option is to extend the fall semester if people really want the day off. They would be here a week later, and it would cut into about a week of their Christmas break.

If students would like to hear another solution to the problem Oldham said, “The other option is that we have our 3000 students, faculty and staff here on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. This about where most people would like there break to be. Another thing is to consider that we checked some records, we did not look all the way back, but we looked back to 1985 and we have never had that day off as far as I can tell.”

If anyone believes colored lip glosses are created equally they are wrong! My mother is what I like to call a M.A.C. Head. She has a very impressive collection of paraphernalia which seems to keep growing every month. A majority of what she doesn't want gets passed down to me. Yes, this has been quite a perk being her only child. She is not one to buy drugstore make up and has always said, the more expensive the better the product is. I usually disagree with her. I believe that drugstore brands can be just a good, but I never turn down any of the pricey brands she is willing to donate.

About three months ago I was loving this E.L.F. colored lipgloss I purchased at Target for $3.00. I loved the color which is a very soft neutral brown called Caramel Candy. For what I paid, I thought it was a great product. Of course I had to reapply it ever hour or so, but it was not a big deal. My birthday was approaching in August, and my mother asked me what I wanted. I showed her this lipgloss I had been wearing and asked if she thought M.A.C. had a similar product. A few days later we made a trip to the M.A.C. counter and she was in heaven, she later purchased two more blushes while we were shopping for my birthday present.

I spent about 20 minutes searching for a lip gloss similar to the one I had, and I finally settled on Oh Baby featured in the Lip Glass line. After one swipe, I feel in love and immediately put the product to the test. After eating and drinking several items throughout the day, I only had to re apply twice. That was much less than my E.L.F. lip gloss. Like a little kid with a new toy, that lip glass become my new favorite play thing.

Although I usually disagree with my mother when it comes to higher-end make up, I can definitely see why she has an obsession with M.A.C. So, bottom line, if your willing to pay $15 for one tube of lip gloss, I say splurge!

Albert "Chato" Gauna Jr. Endowed ScholarshipThe Albert “Chato” Gauna, Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship is given to a student who has an APPROVED DEGREE PLAN leading to an Associate Degree from Central Texas College. Financial need shall be the first consideration. A student who receives this award must take a minimum of six (6) credit hours and maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 an each semester receive a GPA of 2.0 or better. Class can be taken at Central Texas College District or Service Area campuses.

The passing of a loved one is probably one of the hardest things that anyone can deal with, but we all know that they live on in our hearts and minds. The love we have for them goes on always and forever.

Setting up a scholarship in memory of a loved one can be beneficial to their family as it helps preserve the memory of their loved one.

Albert "Chato" Gauna Jr. was a very loving and compassionate person that was taken from us way to soon. His hopes and dreams of attending college were shattered when he was taken at the age of 19. His legacy lives on through the Endowed Scholarship so that someone's dream may be fulfilled.

The Endowment Scholarship has been set-up and will provide a student with some financial support—but not much. This is where you can help. We are seeking assistance in hopes of raising a full-year’s tuition for the Scholarship recipient.

Contact Jessica Rivera at 254-423-5071 or [email protected] for information on how to donate to this scholarship.

Every little bit will help and will be greatly appreciated from both our family and the student that is awarded this wonderful Scholarship.

If you would like to apply for this foundation please contact Central Texas College Foundation.
