Many are familiar with the comedian Steve Harvey, whether it is from listening to his syndicated radio talk show titled Steve Harvey Morning Show, from watching him on TV while he hosts Family Feud or because of his New York Times bestselling book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man (2009), which has also been produced into a movie.

The critics have had mixed reviews on the book. Some have referred to the book as outdated, misogynistic, and ignorant. Others praise Harvey in his efforts to educate not just African-American women but all females in general.

Harvey had both women and men all over the U.S. in an uproar after reading his matter-of-fact/common sense based book. He does have valid points such as women settling for less in a man and what a woman should or should not do in a relationship, but since he is a man unfortunately, it is from a man’s point of view. The book could have definitely been balanced out with a female’s perspective.

After having a chance to read this book, ladies should conclude that this is the opinion of only one man and not all men think this way. Yes, there are some who do, but one cannot use this book solely as a guideline for their love lives.

Many women wonder who Harvey thinks he is to give women relationship advice when he has been married three times and divorced twice. He has also cheated on his ex-wife Mary Shackleford. The two were married for 10 years and divorced back in 2005. Shortly after Harvey’s book was published, Shackleford shared with the media the ups and downs in their marriage claiming various infidelities and mistreatment. The question remains if one can actually take advice from someone who is far from perfect when it comes to relationships, is there any credibility?

Perhaps the most interesting chapter in the book is chapter 8 Why Men Cheat. Harvey tries his best to explain the reasoning behind the deed, and slightly touches on what it’s like after being exposed and how to win back the woman he hurt.

He said, “We are capable of calculating the collateral damage that comes with getting caught, and we know that getting back into the graces of the women we cheated on-and her mother, and her friends, and anyone else who’s sympathized with her having to resurrect herself from such a devastating life event-will require a Herculean effort.”

Since hitting theaters earlier this year, readers were able to see these chapters come to life on screen. While many agree with what displayed in front of them, others were left wanting more. I tuned in to his morning show to listen to movie goer's response to the movie. They like I, could appreciate the fact he tried to empower women, but still fell short in some places.

AWARE – Central Texas Yard SaleBy: Terryn Kelly

Aware Central Texas had its first Prevent Child Abuse Yard Sale in June of 2012, at their new location across the street from UMHB. Much of the community came to support the cause, which is teaching others how to prevent child abuse/neglect and family violence. There was also a bake sale and a hot dog sale during the event.

“We were amazed at how well it was received by the community,” Executive Director for the organization Sue Allen Jackson said. “The Belton Police Department came out and helped us with traffic and made sure everyone was safe. People where very friendly and we made new friends. We got to teach people about who we are and what we do; we got some volunteers so it was a good day.”

Jackson was able to exceed her goal of $2,000, and was surprised to see some the great items that were donated. The proceeds will go toward the operation so they will be able to continue with workshops and spreading awareness. The workshops are open to anyone who wants to attend.

“People were so generous with the things they bought. A lot of times you just think people are just going to drop off their junk, but they did not,” she said. “We had furniture, and valuable antiques, we got amazing athletic equipment. We also got household things like appliances and televisions. We were very thrilled. Some prominent folks in the neighborhood really stepped up and gifted us.”

Jackson wants to remind people that child abuse and neglect has no limitations. The victims can be of any race or gender, and can come from any social class. If anyone is interested in volunteering for Aware Central Texas, they can be reached at 254-939-7582 or at awarecentraltexas.org.

While the American economy has fallen on hard times in recent years, people are aware on the other side of the world, things far are worse. Many students from the UMHB have decided to donate their time to mission trips to help those in need. Although the intent to travel to another country is in good thought, raising the large sum of money for the venture can be overwhelming.

Sophomore nursing major Brittany Haines is currently has raised money to go on her first overseas mission trip this year. She originally had different plans for spring break.

Haines said, “Well in November (2011) I started out not knowing where I was going. I thought I was going to Tijuana, but God just really opened the doors for Haiti. I actually had money saved, just birthday and Christmas money along with my earnings from babysitting.”

With a small head start in savings she decided to continue raising money until she met her goal. She sold bracelets for $4.00. People were generous to her and decided donated more. She also received money from having a garage sale.

Haines also got help from her friends who threw a concert for her in Temple to help with the final costs.

Senior social work major Bethany Franz was excited about her second trip to Haiti. Since her visit last year, the country has stayed on her mind, so there was no doubt that she would be doing fundraisers again for her next endeavor.

“While raising money for mission trips, I have been blessed with family and friends who support me not only prayerfully, but financially. I write support letters and send them to my family and friends first to inform them of the opportunity that has been presented,” she said. “I am also connected to two churches, the one I grew up in and the one I have attended since I moved to Belton, who have been faithful in supporting me financially.”

For those who are interested in attending a mission trip, but are not sure where to start Franz has some suggestions.

She said, “I would tell them to take a leap of faith and begin fund raising in any way possible such as selling T-shirts, having a garage sale, putting a little extra money in savings if possible, sending out support letters, or even asking friends if you could collect their extra change.”

Sophomore nursing major Rebekah Sorrells returned to Haiti as well. This year, she decided to raise money differently.

She said, “The first time I went I sent out support letters mostly to my family members. I also posted on Facebook that I needed money and I got a lot of money that way. This year I had some money left over from my tuition and my older brother helped me out.”

Besides thanking those who contributed funds toward a mission trip, Franz feels that people should take it one step further.

“After you get back from a mission trip, I encourage others to follow up with their supporters and let them know all that God did while you were there.”
