Fellowship Ministry Team 2013

The Fellowship Team organizes activities to encourage RLC members and friends to gather

together to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. The team is also involved in congre-

gational celebrations such as baptisms, new member receptions, and pastor’s ordination re-

ception. One of our key goals is to include activities that will bring us into fellowship with

more RHLS families.

2013 Activities/Events:

Lenten Soup and Salad Suppers : Each year we help organize the delicious soup and

salad suppers that all ministry team members provide prior to the Wednesday evening Len-

ten services. It is lots of fun to see which soups will be on the menu this year. The suppers

begin the first Wednesday evening after Ash Wednesday, so we will see you then.

Annual Church, School, and Preschool Picnic : This year’s picnic was held on the front

lawn and we were once again blessed with a beautiful day. It was wonderful to welcome

several families from RHLS and we hope that we can continue to develop the picnic as a

joint venture between church and school. The food was fabulous- Thank you, Queen of the

Grill Cindy! The kids had plenty to keep them entertained including a jumper, bubbles, and

games. Of course, the picnic would not be complete without the traditional water balloon

toss. Don’t miss this fun, casual opportunity to eat and relax with old friends or meet some

new friends.

Christmas Choir Concert Potluck Supper : The annual Christmas Choir Concert is a

highlight of the holiday season and the potluck supper that follows is a long- standing tradi-

tion at RLC. Did you know that there is a super long Christmas tablecloth that is used only

once a year? Or food “risers” that hold the second tier of food because the tables alone

aren’t large enough for the food? The Fellowship team decorates Rygh Hall and helps to or-

ganize the supper for this event. This is an RLC tradition that is not to be missed!

Pastor Ken’s Installation: This was a huge success. Close to 200 people turned out to

witness the Installation Service and join in the celebration afterwards. The event was ca-

tered by L&L Hawaiian BBQ which was delicious, and Torrance Bakery supplied the cakes,

cookies…just about all the sweets you can imagine! Fellowship worked over time to give our

new Pastor the welcome that he deserved.

Team Members: Carol Grudzien, Megan Johnson, Meg Mendoza, Betty Raulin, and Angela

RLC 2013 Annual Report

You have heard; look at all this. And you, will you not declare it? I proclaim to

you new things from this time, Even hidden things which you have not known. -

Isaiah 48.6

"Year One." Historians typically use this expression in reference to reasonable,

transformational change. I would say that it is fitting to use it to describe Resurrection

Lutheran's 2013 year. This was the first year we took action towards achieving immediate

goals such as rebuilding the cross, putting new floors in Rygh Hall, updating the

Kindergarten and the Preschool. We are in process of building our Ten Year Strategic Plan

and we are well on our way in "Year Two" as well. Our actions may not be what most

consider rapid but I can assure you that they are transformational-to our members, to our

students and their families, to our faculty and staff, and to our greater community of alum-

ni, family, and friends and their connection to Resurrection Lutheran Church.

We put a lot of emphasis on the word "purpose" around here-so allow me to tell you the

purpose of this report. This report is designed to give you an overview of all the things the

ministry teams do at Resurrection Lutheran Church. I hope you will read it to help affirm

our purpose as a worship center and institution of Christian Education dedicated to

excellence in studies; as a place where students can become our newest leaders for a glob-

al society; and as a community rooted in the Lutheran tradition of Christianity where those

of all levels of faith and background are encouraged to pursue inquiry into matters of both

faith and service.

I am challenging all at Resurrection Lutheran to be involved in "Bridge Building" this year:

To improve our culture by practicing open communication with the parents, students and

faculty of the school, the school board and council, children and student ministry, and

administrators in order to build a true confidence that we are all here to serve Jesus and

support one another in prayer, and practice. We will gain each other's trust by doing

things together and creating events that allow us to serve together.

I feel we also need to maintain our present budgetary commitment to keeping tuition low

in our school while seeking new sources of endowment revenue that would allow us to

maintain a Gospel Presence in the community that would increase our current level of

socio-economic diversity.

Above all else, I am pleased to report that Resurrection Lutheran Church is a place that

continues to evolve, grow, and innovate and it is a place where I am proud to say we are

living our purpose. Thank you for your interest and your support.

RLC 2013 Annual Report

Contributing Affirmations of Leadership include:

1. Keep our eyes on Jesus; guard against mission drift

2. Appreciate, nurture, and encourage all staff volunteers

3. Make necessary and appropriate decisions, seeking "what seems good to the Holy Spirit

and to us" (Acts 15)

4. Assure that master planning (immediate, intermediate, and long term) is carefully

thought through and followed

5. Network and promote RLC in the community and school families

6. Maintain accurate overview and pulse of RLC in order to effectively represent and

promote the ministry

7. Minimize the need for problem solving through effective policies and strategize

solutions when necessary

8. Assure that accurate records are maintained and archived

9. Encourage, hold accountable, and evaluate the staff on all levels

10. Maintain expectation of excellence worthy of Jesus Christ

The Governance of RLC can be best defined by the following

Principles and models in God's Word:

I Corinthians 12:12 & 27, The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and

though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. Now you are the

body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it.

Colossians 1:17-18, Jesus Christ is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from

among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Acts 6:1-7, Following the example of the apostles as they organized the Church in order

that the Word of God may spread, roles, expectations, and goals need to be articulated,

enforced, and fulfilled.

Board members act as spiritual elders (Acts 6, so that the primary ministry of RLC will not

be neglected) with the goal of freeing, enabling, and equipping staff through administra-

tive structure and resource support to accomplish the Christ-centered ministry of RLC as

defined in the mission and vision statements and adopted goals of the church

The bylaws of the church determine which substantive decisions will be reserved for

board approval and/or endorsement.

Looking forward to a great year!

In Christ alone,

Pastor Ken Johnson

Principal’s Report 2013 Annual Report

RLC 2013 Annual Report

Dear RLC Family,

The 2012-2013 school year marked Riviera Hall Lutheran School’s 60th anniversary year, and what a

remarkable year it was! From enjoying the daily benefits of our remodeled front of school and gar-

den box program (thank you ShareFest) to finishing the year with an amazing Spring Gala, this past

year has been one of revitalization, spiritual development, and academic growth.

FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS

With the money raised from the 2012-2013 PVO

fundraising events, Spring Gala, and donations from our

loving alumni, friends, and families we:

Created a multipurpose study center in our library

Created a new kindergarten

Purchased a new playground structure

FALL ANNUAL FUND

As many of you are aware, most Christian, private and independent schools conduct an annual appeal

to help bridge the gap from operating expenses to being able to support the school’s expanding pro-

grams in such areas as academics, technology, facility improvements, scholarships, and faculty pro-

fessional development. Tuition covers approximately 87% of Riviera Hall’s expenses, leaving a 13%

gap that is only met with additional fundraising. Our goal for the Annual Fund this year was to close

that gap in order to continue offering enrichment programs such as computer, physical education,

music, resource and Spanish classes.

While many schools are cutting program offerings, Riviera Hall has been able to continue enriching

the academic and social lives of its students through donations to the Annual Fund. This year your

generosity helped provide $39,867, helping us almost bridge the gap. As a result, the Annual Fund

OUTDOOR EDUCATION Grades four through eight participated in extended educational excursions, including:

For three days the fourth grade students, their parents and Mrs. Friedrich toured our state capi-

tol, Sacramento and San Francisco.

Coach King and our Fifth Graders spent four days at Camp Thousand Pines in Crestline, a

Christian team building camp.

Sixth grade attended Astro Science camp in Idyllwild where they studied Astronomy, gravity,

and much more.

For three days the Catalina Island Marine Institute was home to our Seventh grade students,

Miss Brandt and a handful of brave parent chaperones.

Eighth grade visited Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Bolzano, Verona and Venice. For the 8th graders

and their chaperones, it was a trip of a lifetime. While in Rome, our students visited sites

such as the prison of St. Peter and St. Paul, numerous churches and museums. They rode a

high speed train to Florence where they saw The David and then to Bolzano to visit the ice

man, only to move on to Venice to ride in gondolas and visit the palace of the Doge. This

was definitely a memorable trip for our students.

Over Easter vacation some of our Middle School students and their families visited Barcelona

and northern Spain.

For the past ten years our Middle School families have enjoyed international trips to Italy, Eng-

land, Scotland, Greece, Spain, Japan, France, Eastern Europe and Sweden.

RLC 2013 Annual Report

Each day I thank God for the opportunity to work with children. The heart of a child reminds me of how humble I must be.

One bible verse I live by is Matthew 18:1 which says: “Father thank you for the wonderful blessing of children. The laughter and joy they bring to our lives.”

I have been at Riviera Hall Lutheran School for 9 years. I taught preschool for 6 years and worked with Mrs. Steeves in the Transitional Kindergarten classroom. I graduated from El Camino with an As-sociated Arts degree and obtained a cer-tificate in Child Development

The youth program has had a very successful year in terms of growth in attendance and growth in faith.

We were extremely blessed to have the opportunities to travel to Lake Shasta and Big Bear for retreats and do

local activities at places like Ice Chalet, Mulligans and Laser Storm. Thank you to our congregation, RLC

staff and families for the continual support. But most importantly, glory and praise to God for the success of

our ministry this year. He has made this program what it is today. The youth are looking forward to where

God leads our ministry in 2014!

We are blessed God gives us the

It is rare for students to get a

Student Ministries Report continued...

Last May, students gathered at Laser Storm

in Torrance at 11:30pm for a Lock-in. What

does this entail? Students stayed up all night

playing endless games of laser tag until 7am.

The 30 Hour Famine is an unusual

experience for the students to get a

glimpse at hardships homeless and mal-

nourished people face. Every year we

raise money for different causes such as

helping communities in Africa who

don't have clean water.

We spent five nights at Lake Shasta sleeping under the stars.

The students learned about God through lessons, small

group bible studies and worship. With our theme Living

Water, students enjoyed learning about the significance of

living water while spending the week on the water in a

beautiful environment God created. This trip provided us

with opportunities to learn more about God and become closer

to Him, as well as learn skills on how to cook, clean, hike, and

play in the water. It was an awesome week!

Outreach Ministry Team Annual Report 2013

The Outreach ministry team continues its work in welcoming and engaging visitors to RLC. We have integrated the RLC office into our system for welcoming and communicating with visitors. Currently all new visitors who fill out a communication card receive a follow-up letter from the Pastor. After a few visits, we attempt to connect the visitor/new member with peo-ple in the congregation who may share similar interests. In 2013 we welcomed several new members at the New Member Reception held in October. Our new members this year are:

Jack & Lissa Freed & Children: Zac, Jonas & Julia Ricardo & Mariana Solar & Children: Regina & Sofi Gabriel & Laura Felix & Children: Blake & Chase Ron & Pamela Light & Children: Cooper & Presley Marty & Brooke Sigler & Child Zachary Sean Lathrom Barbara Apodaca Janet Brooks Peggy Wishon

Pastor Ken has taken the initiative in making membership at RLC easier to access. Currently he offers a “tour” to those interested in joining RLC. This is from a recent bulletin: “Behind the Scenes Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of a church service? Are you still deciding if you'd like to become a member of our church? Then "The Tour" is your next step! "The Tour" is a 1 hour invitation to meet Pastor Ken and have him personally give you a tour around the church campus. You will get to see what goes on behind the scenes and meet some really cool people! "The Tour" begins at 7PM in the conference room on these upcoming dates: Monday, Sep-tember 23rd; Thursday, September 26th; Monday, September 30th; Thursday, October 3rd; Monday, October 7th and Thursday, October 10th. Please call the church office today at 310-375-5382 to reserve your spot on the next tour!”

Our current team members are Ted Coene, Linda Dondero, Laura Ensberg, and Marcia Lee. However the entire RLC family is part of God’s outreach to all who enter our doors or simply enter our lives.

Mission Ministry Team 2013 The RLC Mission Team believes that we were created to change the world for someone…to serve some-one…to love someone the way Christ first loved us…and to spread His light. Our team feels very blessed to be able to lead our church family in this role, and we humbly thank you for giving us this opportunity. The major “mission” accomplishments for our church in 2013 were: Developed the annual budget for benevolence for RLC, funding various local, national and global organi-zations. Organized and implemented various mission projects within our church throughout the year, including: Project Linus---Martha Bauman achieved her goal of surpassing last years count by completing 271 blan-kets this year that were delivered to local children’s programs (a special thanks to Martha, our honorary Mission Team member) Habitat for Humanity---Dave Westberg organized and led church and school volunteers to help build a home in Long Beach for Rashanna Giddens and her two children. Operation Backpack---donated school supplies and 65 backpacks for needy children in the South Bay. African Team Ministries---sold African made jewelry and handicrafts to raise funds for widows and or-phans in Tanzania. Adopt-a-Family---provided meals and gifts to roughly 100 low income brothers and sisters in the South Bay, for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Operation Christmas Child---collected 318 Christmas shoe boxes with RHLS to provide gifts and hope in Jesus, to children living in war torn countries around the world. First Lutheran Church in Inglewood---continued our 7th year in partnership with FLC, enjoying joint wor-ship, food ministries and mission exchanges. El Salvador Mission Trip---12 RLC church friends were part of the 7th annual mission trip to El Salvador to deliver funds, goods and LOVE to our brothers and sisters in a homeless shelter, in a Lutheran school and in 5 rural poor remote communities. In addition, funds were raised to rebuild Resurrection Lutheran Church in San Salvador. As we end the year in 2013, we would like to thank Erica Long for her dedicated support to this team. Lastly, we would like to thank each and every one of our church family members for helping us to shine God’s light of love to so many of his people who are in great need. We are honored and grateful to be able to serve God and our church on this team. Team Members: Judy Bader, Karen Ragone, Donna Rieb and Angie Rosen…and Julie Jacks as Council Representative. The Music & Worship team, as well as our volunteers are hard working, willing, creative (or willing to be led). What follows is a sample of our scheduled projects, aside from regular Sun-day activities:

In January, we packed away our Advent/Christmas decorations, cleaned the sanctuary and began planning the upcoming year.

In February, the Valentine’s Day Marriage Blessing was observed. We also hosted Pancake-mania on Shrove Tuesday.

March found us playing a significant role during our Lent midweek soup & salad suppers with worship and study series. We also decorated BIG for Palm Sunday. Holy Week came around, which is one of our busiest and most significant weeks of the year . . . it culminated with

RLC 2013 Annual Report

Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday. When that week was over, we tucked Pastor Ken in for a long spring’s nap (he wishes).

During the month of May, we recognized Moms with flowers on their Sunday. For Pentecost, we secured a big red balloon arch and shot flames high up to the sanctuary ceiling (really).

In June we recognized Dad’s with Hugs and Kisses (from Hershey’s!), assisted with a fabulous Graduation Sunday (where we began the tradition of a perpetual graduation banner).

August was fun as we prepared and decorated the sanctuary for the installation of Pastor Ken as our permanent, senior pastor.

School began in September. Those Sundays of the month found us participating in the instal-lations of our RHLS teachers, our Sunday school teachers and presentation of Bibles to our 6th grade church member kids and RHLS students.

October is the month for Reformation and Confirmation at RLC. We also had a wonderful Blessings of the Animals Sunday worship service on our patio . . . Woofstock, or was it Novem-ber. Oh, who cares, it happened!

In November, we observed All Saint’s Sunday; and, Thanksgiving Eve Worship.

December. It speaks for itself, doesn’t it? Sanctuary decorations for Advent and Christmas, Christmas Concert and potluck, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day worship.

Each member of our team thanks you for the opportunity we receive to serve our Lord and express our love to this church family through meaningful and creative work. The blessings received are truly ours.

God’s Grace and Peace,

Martha Bauman April Diedrich Judy Gordon Sabrina Heim Delena Wellmer, Council Rep.

Congregational Care Ministry Team 2013

The Congregational Care Team is responsible for providing a shepherding program at RLC.

This year, Congregational Care was excited to welcome a new program called

BASIC (Boomers and Seniors in Christ) that began providing activities in May, 2013. Under

the leadership of Donna Dunlap and Nancy Fisher, this group was launched with a luncheon

served by the RHLS Home Economics class. Scheduled monthly events have followed with

activities and lunch on campus or field trips off campus. In August, RHLS teachers were invit-

ed to lunch and presented with wish list items. Other on campus events have included trave-

logues to Peru and Turkey with themed luncheons of Peruvian food and a full turkey dinner.

Off campus events included a visit to Pastor Ken and Barbie’s home, the Peterson Auto Muse-

um, Chen Art Gallery and Los Cerritos Rancho. An average of 25-30 people are attending reg-

ularly. Donna and Nancy are currently working on the 2014 schedule that will kick off with an

English Luncheon and a presentation detailing experiences traveling to the United States on

the Queen Mary. In February, the group will tour the Queen Mary.

BASIC is dedicated to providing seniors opportunities to socialize with old friends and experi-

ence new things.

Other duties provided by Congregational Care include:

1. Assist with funerals and other church functions.

2. Deliver flowers to members who are ill and to members celebrating special events.

3. Regularly examine church attendance and communion records.

4. Assist the pastor in identifying the sick and afflicted members of the congregation.

Assist to create a spirit of harmony and good will among members.

Currently, the team members are Donna Kasper, Marilyn Hoffman, Jolaine Merrill, Audrey

Siegel and Karen Westberg.

We ask each member of the congregation to help us with our mission by letting the church

office/Jack and/or Pastor know when members are ill and need to be contacted.

Sub-committees of Congregational Care are always needed. Contact Donna or Karen if you

can help.
