2 | FRENCH AMERICAN AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNIQUÉ 2012-2013
introduction
Year after year it is the generous support of our community that helps our students thrive. Tuition revenue is supplemented by fundraising – helping the school meet its financial goals and deliver a consistently strong program. Because of the contribu-
tions of our volunteers and donors, French American and International High School are thriving. Your gifts allow the school to attract and retain the best teachers from around the world, develop and support our curriculum, provide students with the tools they need for high academic achievement, and continue our commitment to diversity in all its forms. We could not do it without you.
Transition and change are a healthy and necessary part of growth and we have much to be proud of and excited for as we look to the future. We ended the 2012-2013 school year by saying goodbye to long-time Head of School, Jane Camblin, as she moved onto her next adven-ture as Executive Director of the United Nations Interna-tional School in New York. Jane’s leadership brought us to where we are today and we will continue to build on our solid foundation – continuing our legacy as a leader the field of bilingual and multicultural education. Our core values of academic excellence, bilingualism, internation-alism, cross-cultural communication, critical thinking and diversity are what have distinguished us since our found-ing in 1962 and will guide our school well into the rest of the 21st century.
We would like to thank each of you for all that you do and for supporting our culture of engagement. Families who give inspire others to do the same. Your contribu-tions elevate the playing field, inspire students to reach new heights, and instill a life-long love of learning in our graduates.

“Participation in Annual Giving is one way we choose
to acknowledge the fact that French American has
consistently encouraged and supported our family over
the years in many thoughtful, meaningful ways. Our son
has flourished in the academic and social environment
that French American fosters and we’ve become better
parents as a result of relationships we’ve developed with
teachers, school leadership and other parents. We made
a very deliberate choice to join the French American
family five years ago – annual giving is one way we assert
our faith in that choice and affirm our continued support
for the school, it’s mission and it’s unique programs.”

ENdOwmENT
Endowment Fund Annual Report Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2013
Endowment in ActionEndowment income produces a stable, permanent, reliable flow of money that allows an institution to better plan for current students and for generations to come. A healthy endowment adequately supports financial aid, facility maintenance and improvements, educational programs, and teachers. In a nutshell, a healthy endowment is an insurance policy against tumultuous financial markets and swings in enrollment, and provides greater budget flexibility.
In 2013 we transferred $195,000 from the endowment to the school, representing approximately 1% of our annual operating budget. Our students benefit from a strong endowment as the school is better able to fund financial aid needs, enhance our academic and athletic programming and keep up with advances in technology and science. Our teachers benefit as the school is better able to provide more professional development opportunities.

Investment PerspectiveAs the above table shows, the endowment was up over this 12-month period from an investment perspective. Investment returns (i.e. dividends, interest, and capital gains) were up 10.16% in total. The fees paid to our investment consultant and accountant cost an additional 0.44%. Note that the endowment invests in mutual funds, and the investment return of 10.16% includes all mutual fund fees.
Over the long term, we expect the endowment to earn at least 4% above educational inflation, but with considerable variation from year to year. We transfer 4% on average to the school every year, but use a spending rule that damps down volatility, so the amount transferred each year varies much less than the variability in endowment returns. In 2013, using the spending rule, we transferred $195,000, or 3.46%, to the school.
As to why the endowment was up 10.16% before expenses and transfers, we currently manage the endowment to a target asset allocation of 35% fixed income, 35% domestic equity, 25% international equity, and 5% real assets. That allocation led directly to this year’s investment performance:

Our actual investment performance lagged our policy allocation by 0.12%. But given that we pay our investment manager 0.40%, and that the benchmark performance would not be quite achievable with index funds, which still charge management fees, our performance relative to this benchmark looks quite reasonable.
Goals for the EndowmentOver the past several years, thanks to the generosity of our community, we have seen significant growth in our endowment. However, our endowment is well below the median of comparable Bay Area schools and we plan to make a concerted effort to further build our endowment over the next five years. An endowment of $15 million would bring us up to the median and would contribute approximately $600,000 to the school’s budget annually. With that kind of funding, French American and International would be better able to reinvest in the school’s most important assets: students and teachers.
With your support we can enhance the school’s financial position and provide an unparalleled education year after year.
Endowment FundsReceived July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013
French American and International value the generous support of our parents, alumni, and friends who made gifts to the Endowment Fund. These gifts contribute important revenue for the school and help build a better future for our students. Through the generosity of donors over the years, French American International School’s endowment now stands at $6,006,472 (as of June 30, 2013). The Endowment has a separate Board of Trustees and an independent investment manager overseeing its affairs.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the following donors for investing in the school in FY12-13.

Planned Gifts: Founders’ Society
To learn more or make a gift to French American International School’s endowment, contact the Advancement Department at 415-558-2017 or [email protected].
The Founders’ Society is named in honor of the founders of the school, an intrepid and visionary group of francophiles who, in 1962, created San Francisco’s first independent bilingual school. Donors who make bequests (or other forms of planned gifts) believe in what we as an institution want to accomplish. They will leave their legacy by investing in the future of education. French American and International is eternally grateful to the following families for the lasting impact their generosity will have on our students.

Capital Gifts received July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013
We believe that facilities can support innovation and best practices in teaching and learning. Our current capital project will transform our campus, greatly improving the educational experience for our students. With the construction of a purpose-built Maternell and a redesign of space at our main campus we are emphasizing the importance of experiential learning. Completion of this project will bring increased science, art, design, and hands-on learning opportunities to our students and foster greater connections and partnerships at all levels of the school.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the following donors for their early commitments and leadership in FY12-13.

2012-2013 Annual Fund Gifts received July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013
The Annual Fund is French American and International’s single largest fundraising initiative, supported by donors from every constituency. We are extraordinarily grateful to our current families for their generosity and commitment to the Annual Fund and to the many alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, and staff who believe in the impact their contributions have on our school. The Annual Fund supports many aspects of the school, but at its heart, it allows us to continually invest in our programs, teachers and, most importantly, our students. Thank you!
We would like to extend special thanks to the co-chairs of the 2012-2013 Annual Fund (Robert Bottome, Alison Chaput, and Paul Lowrey), and to the 30 dedicated volunteers who supported our efforts as class representatives, phone-a-thon volunteers, and all-around advocates for our dynamic program.
The Communiqué is produced to inform the French American and International community about philanthropic activities and school accomplishments. This edition of the Communiqué includes donor lists for the last full fiscal year (July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013).
Great care has been taken in preparing this report to make it as accurate as possible. The Advancement Office apologizes for any errors or omissions. If you should note an inaccuracy, please notify us at 415-558-2015 so that we can correct our records.

Adedoyin Domingo, Class of 2013
“The academics offered to students at French American and International High school are definitely unique, but I think the community we have is even more rare.
This school allows students to grow up as part of a global community. What does this mean?
This means diversity in race, socio-economic status, interests, family makeup, and even learning style. Diversity is important because we learn from those around us. At both International and French American, students are used to being around people who are different from them so rather than criticizing others for their differences they learn to celebrate them.
I can tell you from personal experience that if you can go through the most self-conscious years of your life without fear of being different or standing out there is absolutely no limit to what you can accomplish. Ours is truly an inclusive environment.
When I first began my journey here at French American it was hard to imagine how I would become the bilingual, globally-aware student that everyone said I would become. But each year I built up the skills to reach that goal.
There is a certain harmony and excitement in our school that simply cannot be found in other schools and it is thanks to this community’s commitment to diversity that all students are able to thrive in this program. This school has made me and Ian who we are today.”
Ian Covert, Class of 2013
“Doyin and I recently toured at a lot of universities, so we know what people look for. Yes, we have a fantastic theater program, and yes, we have high level math and physics courses, but we’re not the only ones.
You want to know what makes us different. We are a global community with a global perspective, and it’s not just our diversity, and it’s not just that we speak French. It’s everything we do. Our history is world history. We learn three languages, minimum. Our literature is not just American, not just French, but Russian, Norwegian, and Colombian. That is what makes us stand out, when we apply for jobs, when we travel, and when we read the newspaper.
This school has allowed us to become who we are today and for you to help give that experience to someone else is just so fantastic. Thank you.”
Adedoyin now attends Occidental College in Los Angeles. Ian attends Columbia University in the City of New York.
