THERES STILL TIME TO HOST A FRESH AIR CHILD IN ALBANY AREACAPITAL DISTRICT - June 30th, 2014 marked the beginning of Fresh Air summer experiences for thousands of inner-city children and their volunteer host families as The Fresh Air Fund kicked off its 138th summer of serving New York City children. By volunteering as a host family in Albany Area, NY, you can share the pure joys of summer with a Fresh Air child in your own backyard! The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking more families to give inner-city children a Fresh Air experi-ence this summer. Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-filled skies or swimming for the first time. Each summer, over 4,000 in-ner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town com-munities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Funds Volunteer Host Family Program. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The

Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year. For more informa-tion on hosting a Fresh Air child, please contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund on-line at www.freshair.org.

THESE ANIMALS MAY HELP YOUR GARDENPlanning and maintaining a garden requires a lot of effort, which can result in an aestheti-cally pleasing addition to the landscape. But that hard work can also fall victim to nature when local wildlife find a garden too mouth-watering to resist.

In an effort to rid a garden of unwanted pests, gardeners may unwittingly scare away animals and insects that might just protect the garden from more ill-intentioned ani-mals. Not every creature that scurries is out to get prized petunias or to devour toma-toes. In fact, many can prove beneficial to gardens.

BATSBats have a bad reputation, as people unnec-essarily fear bats because they believe them to be carriers of disease. But many bats feed off of insects or fruits and will not harm a hu-man. The average brown bat can eat 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour, so its easy to see why bats are good to have around. Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance but also harbor po-tentially dangerous diseases. Bats also may eat certain rodents, which can cut down on the number of animals burrowing in a yard.

FROGSFrogs and toads will prey on insects and make the local insect population more man-ageable. Toads eat mainly slugs, who feed on the leaves and fruits of many plants. Frogs and toads are attracted to water, so includ-ing a pond or another water feature in the garden will provide them with a habitat they like.

BIRDSWhile it is true that some birds can damage crops, many birds are content to feed on in-sects attracted to the garden, which helps to keep insect numbers in check. Chickadees,

for example, will dine on aphid eggs, while larger birds may prey on mice or other ro-dents or simply scare them out of the gar-den. Jays and mockingbirds are known to be feisty and can even deter dogs and cats from a yard. Hummingbirds will sip on the nectar of flowers and help pollinate plants.

    SNAKES

Snakes in a garden can be disconcerting to some people, but snakes are ideal preda-tors who feed on insects and rodents several times their size. Snakes are the right size and shape to invade the burrows of pest animals.

    BUTTERFLIES AND BEES

Butterflies and bees are responsible for pol-linating the vast majority of plants. Avoid using pesticides that may diminish butterfly or bee populations. A beehive right next to a garden may not be practical, but dont make attempts to destroy it. Consult with a profes-sional beekeeper to see what can be done to move the beehive without destroying it.

Many animals and insects can be detrimen-tal to the health of a garden. However, sev-eral animals are handy to have around and should be welcomed to the landscape.

DID YOU KNOW? Many flowers compete with one another to attract butterflies, birds and bees for polli-nation, but at least two species of flowering plants have enhanced their ability to attract insects in unique ways. The titan arum (Amor-phophallus titanium) is native to western Sumatra, where it grows in openings in rain-forests. It is the largest unbranched flower in the world and can reach up to 15 feet tall. But this alone is not what makes the titan arum so special. It is unwise to step in close to get

a whiff of this enormous bloom, as the plant gives off a rancid odor reminiscent of rotting meat. It is sometimes known as the carrion plant or the corpse plant for this reason. The plant has created this scent to attract flies for pollination. The rafflesia, which is native to southeastern Asia as well, is another plant that produces a rotting aroma to attract in-sects. The rafflesia has no stems, leaves or true roots -- its basically one large flower.

According to the Department of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.

TIPS ON SAVING MONEY WITH AN HVAC SYSTEM

(NAPS)Theres good news for homeowners who want to reduce their energy costs. With a little bit of homework, savings are possible.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), most Americans are paying more for electricity and natural gas than they did four years ago, with the average household utility bill now about $1,900 each year. And, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.

To reduce these costs, the experts at the Luxaire brand of heating and air conditioning recommend the following:

Adjustyourthermostat.Byraisingyourthermostatjusta few degrees in mild temperatures and lowering it in cooler temperatures, you can help your heating and cooling system work less to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Programming your thermostat to accommodate your familys time away from home and sleeping schedules will also help to ensure that your system is operating only when you need it.

Install a dehumidifier. Humidity can make the airfeel hotter and heavier in warm weather. By removing the humidity, the air will feel drier and cooler and you will be able to rely less heavily on your heating and cooling system to make the air comfortable.

Performregularmaintenance.Cleanairfilters, sealanyduct leaks and make sure the areas around your system are clear of obstructions. According to the EPA, improper insulation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 percent.

Have your existing homecomfort system inspected and serviced by a qualified technician. The technician will make sure your system is working properly and at peak efficiency. A knowledgeable technician will also be able to recommend a new, more efficient replacement system, such as ENERGY STARqualified equipment that can help you save money on energy bills.

THESE ANIMALS MAY HELP YOUR GARDEN

HOME TIPIf there is a custom tile or specific design that you really like that is not within your budget for the entire kitchen or bathroom, think about using it as an accent instead. Rely on less expensive tiles for much of the room, then sprinkle in the accent tiles for the style you want. The finished project will look high-end, but you will likely have stayed within your budget. You also can save money by shopping at a reuse center or one that sells remnants and leftover materials from larger jobs. For example, its possible to find a piece of marble or granite that would fit perfectly as a countertop in a bathroom.

Fertilizing a lawn is a spring-time tradition for many homeowners. Winter can take its toll on a lawn, but fertilizer can go a long way toward helping a lawn re-cover from harsh weather. While lawn-and-garden en-thusiasts might know the ins and outs of fertilizing a lawn, novices might need a little help as they look to restore their lawns.

    * Find out what your lawn

needs. Even novice green thumbers likely know that overfertilization can harm a lawn, and thats a big rea-son many homeowners ap-proach fertilizing their lawn with some trepidation. A lush lawn adds to the curb appeal of a home, while a lawn thats patchy or ap-pears to be poorly taken care of can lower property value. Before fertilizing a lawn, homeowners should determine the needs of their lawns. A soil test can deter-mine if the lawn has any nu-trient defi ciencies.

    * Dont overdo it with ni-trogen. Fertilizing with too much nitrogen is a common

mistake, as too much nitro-gen can be harmful, decreas-ing root growth and increas-ing a lawns susceptibility to disease. A slow-release fer-tilizer may be an option, as such fertilizers break down nutrients over a longer peri-od of time, which also allows homeowners to extend the intervals between fertilizing sessions. But a lawn can get nitrogen from other sources as well. Such sources include grass clippings or raked leaves left on the lawn after being shredded by a mulch-ing mower.

    * Consider using granules instead of spray. Spraying a lawn with fertilizer might seem like the easiest and quickest way to fertilize, but spraying is typically best left to the professionals. Thats because novices often struggle to evenly apply the fertilizer when spraying, and many do not account for the wind when spraying fertil-izer. A traditional spreader that fertilizes a lawn with granules makes it easier for nonprofessionals to ap-ply the fertilizer accurately and evenly. Before fertiliz-ing with granules, read the package to determine if

you need to water the lawn before application, as some fertilizers are only eff ective when applied to a lawn after it has been watered. Also, be sure to fi ll the spreader on asphalt instead of the lawn. Chances are youre going to spill granules when fi lling the spreader, and such spills can be harmful to the lawn.

    * Plan to fertilize several times. Some homeowners only fertilize twice a year, once in the spring and then once again in the fall. But fertilizer should be applied multiple times through-out the year, beginning in the early spring. The fi rst time to fertilize is when the soil temperature reaches roughly 55 F, which is of-ten evident because grass typically starts to grow again when the soil reaches that temperature. Fertilize again roughly a month after fer-tilizer is fi rst applied, and then do so every six to eight weeks after through Octo-ber. Professionals often rec-ommend using an organic material during the third fertilizing session.

RECOGNIZE SAFETY HAZARDS DURING YARD WORK(MS) -- Attention, all green thumbs -- and the bodies attached to them: Its nearly time to get down and dirty in the garden.

Whether youre transform-ing your backyard into an award winner or just trim-ming the lawn, the CSA Group, a leading certifi ca-tion and testing organiza-tion, asks that you remem-ber the following safety tips:

    Yard Work

    * Always ensure that prod-ucts such as electric lawn-mowers, barbecues, power tools, ladders, decorative lights, extension cords and safety apparel carry the mark of a recognized certifi -cation organization, such as CSA Group.

    * Read the manufacturers operating instructions and use products only as intended.

    * Wear protective eye and footwear (on eyes and feet, respectively).

    * Whats that you say? Wear hearing protection when operating loud machinery, vehicles or tools.

    Power Lawnmowers

    * Know your mower and always follow the manufac-turers instructions.

    * Look for these safety fea-tures: a rear guard to protect your hands and feet from rotating blades; a deadman control that stops the mow-er when you release the han-dle; and an up-stop feature

to prevent the handle from kicking up when the mower hits an obstacle.

    * Clear the lawn of sticks, stones, wire, toys and other objects (including that screwdriver you lost in the grass last summer), as they could get caught in the ma-chine or fl ung by the blades.

    * Wear clothing that pro-vides some protection, in-cluding long pants, a shirt with sleeves and fi rmly-tied shoes with non-slip soles and hard toes.

    * Never cut the grass when its damp or wet, or when there is rain or lightning. Wet conditions greatly increase the risk that you will slip, suf-fer electric shock or clog the mower.

    * Always mow in daylight, never at twilight or in the dark. Keep your eyes on the lawn and look ahead (at least three feet) for debris.

    * Shut off , unplug and en-gage your mowers safety devices before removing clogged grass clippings.

    * Shut off the mower imme-diately if you hit an object. Check for damage and do not restart it unless youre sure its safe to do so.

    * As suggested by its name, always push rather than pull a push mower.

    * All extension cords should be untangled, in good re-pair, have a three-prong plug rated for outdoor use and be of the recommended gauge for the load.
