Transportation (NYSDOT) will host two public open houses regarding a proposed project to make improvements to the Rexford Bridge on State Route 146 and at the intersections of Route 146 with Aqueduct Road/Williams Road in the Town of Niskayuna, Schenectady County and the intersection with Riverview Road/Alplaus Road in the Town of Clifton Park, Saratoga County. The open houses will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014, starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Rexford Fire Sta-tion at 1601 Route 146 in Rexford (Clifton Park) and on Janu-ary 30, 2014 starting at 7:00 p.m. at Niskayuna Town Hall at 1 Niskayuna Circle in Niskayuna. The Niskayuna meeting will be a public hearing. A presentation on the project will be given at 7:00 p. m. followed by a time for public comments and questions. Staff from NYSDOT will be available to discuss the project in an informal environment before and after the presentation. Comments and input regarding the project are welcome as part of NYSDOT’s continual eff ort to encourage public participation in the development of transportation projects. The project proposes to replace the Rexford Bridge and provide improvements to the intersections. The current preferred alternative adds lanes to the intersections and pro-vides a multi-use trail between the intersections. The traffi c signal at the Aqueduct Road intersection is proposed to be replaced by a roundabout. There is currently no schedule for project construction. The Rexford Fire Station and Niskayuna Town Hall are accessible to people with disabilities. The De-partment of Transportation will provide interpretive aids or services if requested prior to the meeting. Anyone who has concerns or observations about this intersection project but who is unable to attend the open house may either contact Richard Filkins, Project Manager, at (518) 457-9756 or write to: Richard Filkins, Project Manager, NYS Department of Trans-portation, Region 1 Design, 50 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12232.

SAT PREP COURSECLIFTON PARK - Captain is proud to offer SAT Prep with Capital District Consulting, a compa-ny whose mission is self-improvement.  Thirty percent of the course fee will be donated to CAPTAIN programs and services.  SAT Prep spe-cializes in strategies and techniques that all students should know before taking the SAT.

The stated goal of the course is to prevent test anxiety and to fully prepare students to perform at their best on both the math and English portions of the exam.  Colleges often base scholarships on a combination of grades and SAT scores, so underperforming on the test can cost you and your family thousands of dollars in lost scholarships.  Most colleges use the SAT scores in admission decisions, so don’t sell yourself short!  Get into the college you want by earning the score you are capable of achieving. Please go to www.capitaldistrict-consulting.com and register today.  The course fee is $225.00 and classes will run from 7:00-9:00 pm on March 10, 13, 17, 20, 24 and 27th.  Classes will be held in the conference room of CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services in Clifton Park, located at 5 Municipal Plaza—Suite 3. WEDDING SHOWERS CONTINUE TO BREAK FROM TRADITION

Rain showers on a wedding day may bring good luck, but they are seldom coveted. However, a diff erent type of shower altogether is often highly anticipated and can help couples feel like they’re one in a million.

Wedding showers are gift-giving parties held for couples about to get married. The custom began in the nineteenth century and continues to present day, primarily in North America and Australia. Guests traditionally “shower” the bride-to-be with all the necessities (and some fun extras) that she will need after she ties the knot. These gifts will help the soon-to-be-married couple establish a home together.

Bridal showers are steeped in tradition, but today’s bridal showers continue to veer off the beaten path. Nowadays, bridal showers feature fun and games much like a party having nothing to do with a wedding. TheKnot.com, a Web site that aims to help couples plan their weddings and all the events leading up to the big day, identifi es these key trends in modern bridal showers.

* Couples’ showers: Modern couples who like to be all-inclusive are now planning bridal showers that cater to mixed audi-ences. Dubbed a “couple shower,” these par-ties include female and male friends and relatives. Gifts are still the main focus of the event, but they’re varied and include guy-friendly items within the mix of household goods.

* Power showers: Many are familiar with the terms “man cave” and “bromance,” but few may know that there are now wedding showers geared entirely around the groom. Known as “power showers,” these events focus on the groom-to-be, who is showered with a bevy of gadgets and power tools that are certain to stock his future garage. The parties are decidedly more testosterone-friendly and can include golf outings, poker nights or action movie fl icks as possible themes.

* Destination/activity showers: Rather than having guests hang around a restaurant watch-ing gift after gift get unwrapped, some bridal parties opt to throw an activity shower. These showers are focused around a particular activity. For example, ladies may be treated to a day at the spa. Other ideas include horseback riding at a stable or a day at the ballpark. Because hosting an activity shower for dozens of people may get expensive, these types of showers may be reserved for only your closest friends and family members.

* Bride-involved showers: The idea of walking into a room and being surprised by friends and family members is appealing to some brides-to-be but not everyone. Some brides prefer not to be surprised by a shower and actually would like to have a role in the planning of the party. However, this is delicate ground on which to tread, considering there may be diff er-ences over where the party is held and even the overall experience of the party. These type of showers should be discussed before any plans are made, and tasks should delegated in accordance with those plans.

It is customary for a bridal shower to take place before a wedding. But new trends have emerged that are shaking up the way showers are planned and held.

Gifts are still important, but new trends in wedding showers have shifted the focus of these events.

DID YOU KNOW? According to TheKnot.com, a Web site catering to couples planning their weddings, roses reign supreme among wedding fl owers. Long considered a symbol of love, roses often play an integral role on wedding days as well as holidays like Valentine’s Day or special events like a couple’s wedding anniversary. Couples embrace roses on their wedding days not only to symbolize their love for one another, but also because roses are a versatile fl ower available in numerous solid colors and many bicolor varieties. Tulips are another popular wedding fl ower. Also grown in a wide range of colors, tulips are often less expensive than roses, though rare varieties of tulips will cost brides- and grooms-to-be a signifi cant amount of money. Though

less versatile than roses and tulips with regards to their color, calla lily fl owers are another popular choice for weddings. Lily of the val-ley, hydrangeas, the peony, and ranunculus are also popular wedding fl owers. Though each type of fl ower is beautiful in its own way, costs can vary considerably depending on the type of fl owers couples choose for their wedding, something cost-conscious couples should consider before visiting fl orists.

SAVE-THE-DATE CARD ETIQUETTE Many couples find that tradition reigns supreme when planning a weddings. Certain tradi-tions, such as fathers walking their daughters down the aisle and grooms sharing a dance with their mothers at the reception, are moments to cherish. Though such traditions have withstood the test of time, couples still have some opportunities to embrace relatively recent traditions.

One such recent tradition is the save-the-date card, a precursor to wedding invitations that simply lets guests know when the wedding is so they can clear their calendars and be there on a couple’s big day. While save-the-date cards are best kept simple, there are a few rules couples should follow before sending their cards out to loved ones.

* Finalize the guest list before sending save-the-date cards. Couples must finalize their guest lists before sending their save-the-date cards. Doing so avoids the potentially messy situa-tion that would no doubt arise if a person were to receive a save-the-date card but then not make the final guest list. Trimming the guest list often comes down to finances, so couples also want to agree on their budget before sending out their save-the-date cards. Once the guest list has been finalized, couples can send out their save-the-date cards as soon as pos-sible.

* Confirm addresses. Couples should confirm their loved ones’ addresses before mailing any save-the-date cards. This can be easily accomplished by sending mass emails to friends and family members or contacting individuals via private messages sent on social media sites. Postage to send save-the-date cards can be costly, especially for couples with large guest lists. Confirming addresses can save couples money on potentially wasted postage should the cards be returned because they were sent to the wrong address. In addition, confirming addresses ensures everyone gets their cards and no one feels left out when relatives receive cards and they don’t because a couple did not have their correct address.

* Keep things appropriate. Save-the-date cards need not be as formal as wedding invitations, but they should still be appropriate. Guests often keep save-the-date cards on their refrig-erators, where people of all ages can see the cards. So while cards can be light-hearted, they should still be family-friendly. For example, photos of the bride- and groom-to-be decked out in swimsuits should be avoided.

* Don’t overdo it with information. Save-the-date cards don’t need to include as much infor-mation as the more formal invitations, which tend to include information about the ceremony,

reception, hotel, directions, and other relevant wedding details. A save-the-date card only needs to include the date of the wedding, includ-ing the month, day and year so guests are not confused if the cards are going out well in advance of the wedding day. Couples can include a link to their wedding Web site on the backs of their save-the-date cards, which makes it easier for guests to learn more details about the wedding without inundat-ing them with information too early.

HOW TO CALM THOSE LAST-MINUTE JITTERS Brides- and grooms-to-be are often nervous when the day they will tie the knot finally arrives. The realization that months and months of planning and anticipation are finally about to come to a head often inspires some jitters in the days leading up to the wedding. But the fol-lowing are a few ways couples can calm those nerves in the hours leading up to the moment they have devoted so much time and effort to planning since becoming engaged.* Get a good night’s rest. Couples should prioritize a good night’s sleep the night before they are set to walk down the aisle. Make your last night as an unmarried couple an early night so you will look your best and have plenty of energy on your big day, which will no doubt start early and end late. A good night’s sleep can go a long way toward ensuring you’re in a good mood as you handle a full slate of responsibilities on your wedding day.* Spend time with family and friends. Chances are your closest friends and family members are playing significant roles in your wedding, and spending time with them is a great way to keep your nerves in check while having a fun time before, during and after the ceremony. * Don’t be afraid to delegate responsibilities. In spite of months of planning, couples will still have a to-do list come their wedding days. If such a list is overwhelming, brides- and grooms-to-be should not be afraid to delegate some of the tasks on their lists. Bridesmaids and groomsmen can no doubt handle any outstanding tasks that don’t require any input from the bride or groom.* Relax as the ceremony draws nearer. As the start time for the ceremony approaches, cou-ples about to tie the knot should take time to sit down and relax. Once their hair and makeup is finished, brides-to-be should sit down and exhale or arrange for the photographer to snap some fun pre-wedding photos with their bridesmaids. Grooms-to-be can do the same with their groomsmen, sharing a few last-minute jokes to ensure everyone is relaxed and ready to go before taking their places.

Hi, I’m pretty Peanuts, a very sweet and social Momcat. I have a lovely orange coat with just the tiniest bit of white on my chest. My orange eyes

are beautiful. I am here with my baby Little Peanut. A while ago I was a pregnant stray, and some nice folks took me in so I could have a safe place to give birth. But they couldn’t keep us, so they brought us to the shelter.

I am a real love bug, and I give head butts and like to cuddle. A forever home is what I need now, and I will be a delightful addition to your family

because I am just a total sweetheart!

CALLING ALL MENTORS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs pro-vide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a men-tor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to de-velop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empow-ering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly ba-sis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].

Expires 2-28-14

In 2005 we were the fi rst in the area to bring you the Lastone Massage and now: BAMBOO-FUSION.

What may seem like a new technique, bamboo massage, has ancient roots. Today, bamboo massage is touted as Bamboo-Fusion but bamboo can be seen as much more than a new trend or accessory.

Bamboo-Fusion massage is a technique that incorporates bamboo heated stalks of varying lengths and diameters to provide deep-tissue work to promote lymphatic drainage into the technique. Stalks are usually heated and are incorporated into the massage. The massage itself promotes circulation, sensory nerve perception, a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.

One of the fi rst people to develop a bamboo massage technique was Natahlie Cecilia, a certifi ed Thai massage therapist from France. Several of our top massage therapists have trained exclusively with Nathalie Cecilia, the creator of Bamboo-Fusion and are ready to show you the many benefi ts of Bamboo-Fusion massage.
