LENTEN LUNCHESREXFORD – On Wednesday, March 18th, at 12:00 pm, Faith Baptist Church will be hosting the fourth of six Lenten Lunch-es at 11 Glenridge Road in Rexford. HALFMOON – Registration Dates for this year’s summer camp are Saturdays, March 28th from 9:00am-12:00pm and Tues-days, March 31, April 7, 14 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Program dates are June 29 through August 7, 2015. Programs are available for Halfmoon youths, ages 3 –15 (limitations apply, please see brochure). WHAT IS CORNED BEEF?

At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the “beef” part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned” part.

Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available.

According to the Depart-ment of Agriculture, the word “corn” comes from An-glo-Saxon times when meat was dry-cured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it.

Corned beef brines today contain more than just salt. They may have diff erent spices and fl avorings to add to the taste of the meat.

I am I can, a mentor-ing program for girls in grades 9-12, is seeking professional women to work with new students to the program. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student on a one-to-one basis, while developing a relation-ship that provides support and guidance in achieving their post-graduation goals. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. CLIFTON PARK – Beginning Tuesday, April 14, 2015, a Six-Week Formation and Skill Building Workshop entitled “Pas-toral Care to the Sick, Elderly and Homebound” will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 569 Clifton Park Center Road, Clifton Park, NY 12065. This pro-gram will be held Tuesday evenings through May 19, 2015, and will provide information on: the art of pastoral visitation; communication skills; illness issues; spiritual assessment; grief and loss; suff ering and faith; death and dying; ritual and sacraments in pastoral ministry; theology of pastoral care and care giving issues. Weekly sessions include presentations and interactive exercises, as well as readings. Two pastoral visits are required along with a journal process. 2015 PROJECT EASTER BUNNY CAPITAL DISTRICT – Floydwarriors.com “Helping Families Cope with Cancer, One Household at a Time” is very pleased to announce its 6th annual run of Project Easter Bunny. Floy-dwarriors.com founder Lisa Morahan began this effort after experiencing Easter Sunday in 2009 too ill to make one bas-ket up for her son while in the middle of chemotherapy treat-ment. In 2010 enough toys and candy were collected to make up 100 baskets, 135 in 2011, 190 in 2012, 225 in 2013 and 290 in 2014. Our goal is to collect enough new small toys and candy for 350 baskets this year and add yet another oncology center to our list of glad recipients. Several area cancer orga-nizations and hospitals caring for cancer patients will receive this year’s bounty so children of those in treatment will have a nice big basket to open on Easter morning. Locations to re-ceive baskets hope to include The CR Wood Center at Glens Falls Hospital, Samaritan Hospital in Troy, The Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology Center at Saratoga Hospital, The Com-munity Hospice of Saratoga, The Hope Club in Latham, New York Oncology Hematology of Albany and Rexford, CRAAB, To Life! and families helped by floydwarriors.com. SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE AT THE PUMPThe cost of fuel dipped in 2014, but drivers are still looking for ways to spend less at the pump. For many drivers, that means driving less. Driving less will save money, and doing so also re-duces fuel consumption and contributes to fewer emis-sions entering the air, both of which can benefi t the en-vironment.But many drivers are unable to drive less, as commit-ments to work and family require them to get behind the wheel more often than they might prefer. Such driv-ers may be looking for ways to reduce their fuel costs, and fortunately there are several ways to do just that.• Reconsider your choice of fuel. Many of today’s auto manufacturers now design their vehicles so they can run smoothly on regular un-leaded gas, which is typically

listed as “87 octane” at fi lling stations. That’s important to know, as regular gas is often considerably less expensive than alternatives that are higher octanes. Many driv-ers may even choose regular unleaded, but opt for premi-um gas every third or fourth trip, feeling that the higher octane fuel every so often will increase performance of older engines. But many engines are designed to run smoothly and effi cient on low-octane fuel, meaning it’s unnecessary to choose pre-mium gas, even if you only do so once in a blue moon. Read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to determine the best fuel for your car.• Buy when the time is right. Prices at fi lling stations fl uc-tuate on a daily basis, so un-less your car is running on empty, avoid fi lling up when the prices seem especially

high. Some pa-tience may pay off with several dollars in sav-ings, and those savings can add up to a signifi -cant amount of money over time.• Become a less aggressive driver. Driv-ers with hectic schedules tend

to be more aggressive when behind the wheel. But driv-ing aggressively is unsafe and potentially costly. When driven at speeds that exceed 55 miles per hour, vehicles lose fuel economy. Accord-ing to the California Energy Commission’s Consumer Energy Center, driving 55 miles per hour instead of 75 miles per hour can reduce fuel costs by as much as 75 percent.

• Remove unnecessary weight. A car trunk might seem like a great place to keep your golf clubs, and it may be tempting to leave that roof rack on top of your car after a recent camp-ing trip, but such unneces-sary cargo in or on your car makes it harder for the car to get from point A to point B. That forces the car to con-sume more fuel. Unless your immediate plans include hit-ting the links or hunkering down at a nearby campsite, remove unnecessary weight from the car so your next trip to the gas station is less ex-pensive.

The cost of fuel can make trips to the fi lling station into costly excursions. But drivers willing to recon-sider conventional wisdom and change their driving habits can save substantial amounts of money over time.

DID YOU KNOW? A vehicle identifi cation num-ber, or VIN, is more than just a unique code that distin-guishes a car from other ve-hicles. The VIN can actually tell drivers things about the car as well. By examining the VIN, a driver can learn where his or her car was assembled, the model year of the vehi-cle, the manufacturer of the vehicle and even the model of the vehicle. How to read a VIN is not something drivers learn in educational courses, so those who want to learn how to decode their VIN can contact the manufacturer of their vehicles. Understand-ing how to read a VIN can help car buyers determine if the car they are buying is sto-len or if the seller is attempt-

ing to mislead them in an-other way. In addition, when drivers have the correct VIN number for a vehicle, they can use that to gain access to a vehicle history report on the car or truck. Such reports will indicate the vehicle’s ownership and accident his-tory, further protecting buy-ers from purchasing a lemon or stolen vehicle.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCECLIFTON PARK – Members of The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County’s Women In Business Committee are reaching out to the commu-nity for help with their chari-table initiative, Backpacks of Hope, which supports moth-ers and their children utiliz-ing the services of Domes-tic Violence and Rape Crisis Services of Saratoga County (DVRC). Backpacks of Hope is part of the Committee’s Bas-kets of Hope initiative, which has been providing women entering the Saratoga Coun-ty Domestic Violence Shel-ter with baskets of personal care items. The backpacks and school supplies meet the needs of the children who are also affected by domestic violence. The Women in Business Com-mittee seeks donations of back-to-school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, crayons, mark-ers, glue sticks, etc. Donations of personal care items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other toiletries are also welcomed year round. Anyone who wishes to participate in this worthy program can do so by bringing donations to The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, located at 15 Park Avenue in Clifton Park (behind Shoppers World Plaza). As you may know, my firm markets personal insurance for life, disability, health and long term care. In addition, we provide professional tax consulting and preparation of business income tax returns, including trusts and estates.

After working thirty-three years for the New York State Judicial Branch in the financial division and serving twenty-eight years in the U.S. Army on active and reserve duty, I had the opportunity to be the principal in my own business and chose that over a traditional retirement.

My objective is that clients could be better served once their needs and goals are identified and solutions developed from among the companies that meet stringent requirements to do business in New York State. By using cost and benefit analysis, clients can be better served by obtaining the most value for what they are willing to spend for voluntary benefits. This can ef-

fectively be accomplished by brokering to multiple companies rather than dealing with just one company. Similarly, no client should pay more taxes than required and it is essential that all credits or refunds be

provided in spite of the complexity of the tax code. There are income tax free provisions available and some penalties of the Affordable Care Act can be avoided, but they are not automatic. Professional advice for tax preparation can be rewarding.

My business philosophy is to do what I enjoy most, which is helping people. Many years ago when my older brother was ill one Saturday morning, he asked me to deliver orders for a butcher shop where he worked. That was my first job at 13 years old and since that time I have built up a lifetime of qualifications to serve clients. I am fully licensed as a NYS insurance broker for over 30 years. My BBA degree was earned from Bernard Baruch College in NYC in 1969 as well as an accounting certificate from Siena College in 2003. The Enrolled Agent designation, which allows taxpayer representation in civil matters before the IRS, was earned in 2013.
