AFTER THE FIRE PERFORM
LITTER CONTROL
BALLSTON SPA - After The Fire has adopted the Assem-blyman Jim Tedisco Fitness Trail in Ballston Spa for litter control since 2006. Members make regular trips as soon as the snow has gone for the season, until the snow files again. The Village has placed a trash recepticle at each end of the trail, and users of the trail have been increasingly diligent about using them. Everyone is urged to carry their trash to the recepticles (cigarette butts included), as a courtesy to others, to obey the law, and to maintain the aesthetics of the trail. After The Fire helps residents of Saratoga County who have suffered a loss due to fire. They are a non-profit orga-nization that exists entirely on donations and is com-prised totally of volunteers, which are always needed. After The Fire provides fam-ily members with personal care items, gift cards, Red Cross referral, informational material, emotional support - whatever is needed to help the family through a terrible situation. Anyone interested in helping their neighbors in need may leave a message on voicemail at 435-4571 or visit www.afterthefire.org.

Coco -- a lovely petite pittie girl looking for a place to call ‘home’. Watch Coco’s video and then come to the shelter to
meet this charming mutt.
Hi, I’m Hazel. My owner whom I loved dearly, passed away and now I’m very lonesome. I can be shy around strangers
but once I get to know you, I am extremely affectionate. I’ll rub up against you and I love being petted and talked to. I’ll even let you pick me up but I need to be sure of my
surroundings. I’m soft and awfully sweet. I really want a new home and a friend so I can be someone’s companion again. If
I can be yours, please stop in and meet me.

PROTECTING AGAINST SUN
DAMAGE WHILE IN A CAR
(NAPS)—The average Ameri-can spends more than 101 minutes a day in a car. Unfor-tunately, what many drivers and passengers fail to realize is that when they are in a car, not all the danger they face is on the road.
Both drivers and passengers are often exposed to harm-ful ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, particularly from the side windows of the cars in which they ride.
“Damage from certain kinds of ultraviolet rays is cumu-lative,” says Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, vice chair of the der-matology department at St. Louis University. “These rays penetrate deep into the skin and can silently acceler-ate the aging process, cause wrinkles and even skin can-cer.”
Fortunately, adding a UVA-blocking fi lm or tint to car windows can be an eff ective way to help block damag-ing rays and protect yourself while you drive.
For example, a range of window fi lm options, sold under the brand name LLu-mar, provide UV protection. There’s even a clear fi lm that appeals to those who do not want a darker window ap-pearance, or where the use of dark fi lms is prohibited by state law. When applied over ordinary automotive glass, this fi lm’s virtually invisible protection blocks more than 99 percent of harmful UV rays.* LLumar window fi lm acts as “sunscreen”—off er-ing daily sun protection with a one-time application.

(NewsUSA) - It's the season of sunshine and road trips -- and if you want to get the most out of your four-wheeled adventure, you bet-ter pack a map to go along with that electronic GPS.
"The best reason to keep paper maps in your vehicle, especially on long road trips, is because GPS isn't al-ways reliable," says Cynthia Ochterbeck, editorial direc-tor of Michelin Travel Part-ner.
Confi rming this trend, a 2013 Harris Interactive sur-vey of 2,200 U.S. drivers who use GPS found that 63 per-cent say that the technology
has led them astray at least once by pointing them in the wrong direction or creat-ing complex, confusing and incorrect routes.
So, while it may seem that paper maps have gone the way of Atari's Pong, they are still just as important as ever -- not to mention many other benefi ts that you don't get with some GPS devices.
"One of the greatest char-acteristics of paper maps is that you get all of the details, [such as] points of inter-est," says Ochterbeck. "Plus, you don't risk getting lost when you lose the signal or the battery dies on your cell
phone or GPS device."
Another benefi t is that, in addition to printed maps providing effi cient ways of understanding road net-works that surround particu-lar areas, the information is very reliable. Plus, new spe-cialized maps, like Michelin's Zoom Maps, are aiming to enhance the paper map ex-perience.
Most people recognize Michelin for its tires, but, un-known to many, it also has a 112-year history of creating maps and travel guides. In fact, it provided the maps that were used by the Allies for the D-Day invasion. Im-
GPS IS NOT FOOLPROOF. A MAP STILL MAKES THE MOST OF SUMMER TRAVEL proving on this history, the new Zoom Maps off er seven regional maps for travel in the U.S., with the ability to zoom in on more detail in urban areas. In addition, the new maps have a "not-to-be-missed" event calendar for regions, in an easy-to-fold system so you don't have to unfold the entire map.
"Technology is great, but a printed map is one of the most important tools a trav-eler in
an unfamiliar setting can have -- the battery doesn't die, it is easy to use, and it al-lows you to make decisions on route changes if neces-
sary," says Ochterbeck. "Even better, there are no roaming or data charges to worry about."

MAINTENANCE IS KEY TO SAFE
SUMMER DRIVING
(NAPS)—Tires are the only thing between you and the road, so it’s imperative mo-torists stay on top of tire maintenance. Proper tire maintenance is important all year, but especially in the summer months as the temperature starts heating up and the frequency of tire blowouts increases.
Improper tire care contributes to 195 fatalities and 6,300 in-juries each year, according to the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration. The agency also estimates that about 11,000 tire-related crashes occur annually. Simply checking your tire pressure can help you and your passengers stay safe during your next summer journey.
To get the most from your tires this summer, here are fi ve maintenance tips from the world’s largest independent tire and wheel retailer—Discount Tire:
1. Get Pressure Right— Low tire pressure can decrease fuel economy. Tires may lose up to one pound PSI (per square inch) of air pressure per month. The specifi c infl ation pressure number may be found on the vehicle placard located inside the driver’s door. Don’t forget those trailer tires. Checking the tire pressure for boat, travel and utility trailers is as important as your car or truck.
2. Don’t Overload—Overloading your vehicle or trailer de-
creases fuel economy due to increased cargo weight. Han-dling, control and braking are also negatively impacted.
3. Rotate Before You Go—Regular rotation helps achieve uni-form tire wear and improves road performance. Tires rotated every 5,000 miles have longer life and will help maximize your tire investment.
4. Straighten Up—Proper wheel alignment provides safe, predictable vehicle control and helps tires wear evenly and last longer. If your tires squeal when you turn or if you notice your steering wheel veers to one side while driving straight, it’s time to get your wheels re-aligned.
5. Bald Isn’t Beautiful—Lack of tread aff ects the tire’s ability to grip the road, especially in wet conditions. Make sure tires don’t have uneven wear, which indicates something is wrong with the tire. High or low spots or unusually smooth areas may decrease traction and increase the risk of road accidents.
“Maintaining tire pressure is one of the most critical things motorists can do to improve road safety while getting the most from their tires,” said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “Im-properly in fl ated tires lead to decreased steering and braking

control as well as excessive tire wear and fuel consumption. Taking fi ve minutes each month to inspect your tires will go a long way in keeping you and your passengers safe.”
A Five-Minute Fix
Checking tire pressure and tread is easy and can pay divi-dends when it comes to fuel economy and handling. Don’t go by appearances. Use a tire gauge to check the pressure since a tire can be 50 percent underinfl ated but still not ap-pear fl at.
Make it a habit to check tire pressure every month and always before a long journey. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s recom-mended tire pressure and don’t forget to check the spare and trailer tires.
“Most people forget to check the pressure in the spare tire and come to fi nd that when they need it, the spare is fl at,” said Marrufo. “This simple check could keep you from a costly tow if you get stuck with a fl at.”
Road trippers should also check tire tread depth by using the “penny test.” Insert a penny upside down into the tread. If you see Abe Lincoln’s entire head, it’s time to replace the tire.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County
Making Business Connections in Waterford
For the first time in a long time, the Chamber of South-ern Saratoga County has planned for one of its monthly business meetings to take place in the Village of Wa-terford, at McGreivey’s Restaurant, 91 Broad St. in the heart of the village. This is an important development, acknowledging the importance of the river towns to the economic health of Tech Valley. Years ago, during the heyday of the canals as commercial highways, places like Waterford, Mechanicville, Stillwater and Schuyler-ville had busy waterfronts and downtowns, with nearby factories, shops, inns and taverns filling the holds of the cargo vessels and the bellies of those who worked on them. In the latter half of the twentieth century, the slowdown in upstate New York manufacturing and the reduction in canal traffic hit these communities hard and devastated their local economies. Today, each river town still retains its unique character, and they are quite delightful to visit and get to know their inhabitants. Today a new focus has been placed on these communities, because of their high value as tourist attractions, their proximity to the rails and waterways which are becoming more significant with the switch to alternative methods of transporta-tion, and simply because they are nice places to live. As more and more people pay attention to the river towns, the Chamber has decided to hold a mixer at one
of Waterford’s main attractions, McGreivey’s Restaurant. Offering fine meals in an upscale setting, interesting spe-cial events and on-and-off premise catering, McGreivey’s is an excellent venue to showcase what today’s Waterford is all about. Sponsored in part by Supervisor Jack Lawler and the Town of Waterford, the mixer will take place from 5:30-7:30PM on Thursday, August 14, 2014, with network-ing, food and a cash bar available. Admission is $10. Any-one interested in doing business in Waterford is invited to attend. Visit www.southernsaratoga.org for details.
