SHARE THE BEAUTY OF YOUR COMMUNITY WITH A FRESH AIR
CHILD THIS SUMMERCAPITAL DISTRICT - This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoying the pure joys of summer in your own backyard! Thousands of volun-teer host families in rural, suburban, and small town com-munities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Vol-unteer Host Family program. The Fresh Air Fund, an indepen-dent, not-for-profi t agency, has provided free summer expe-riences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-fi lled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. A CAR’S WIPERS NEED CARE TO KEEP THINGS
CLEAR(NAPS)—Windshield wip-ers may be among the most overworked and underap-preciated equipment on your car. For example, while drivers depend on their wip-ers for visibility in rain, sleet and snow, many don’t pay attention to them until they can’t see clearly out of the windshield. As a result, say experts, they end up endan-gering their own safety as well as that of fellow travel-ers.
“Windshield wipers take a beating—not just because of normal use, but also ex-treme temperatures, ultra-violet light, car waxes, tree sap, road tar and even pol-lutants,” says wiper specialist Chris Vermette.
A good rule of thumb is to replace blades at least year-ly, or as soon as you notice a streak, skip or smear. It’s an easy do-it-yourself project, but damaged wiper arms and motors may need pro-fessional attention.
Signs Of Wear
The most common signs and causes of worn wiper blades include:
• Streaking: The rubber squeegee dries, hardens and cracks, or there is debris on the windshield.
• Skipping: The blade de-velops a curvature from damage or lack of use.
• Wearing: Excessive use and rounded—not squared—rubber edges.
• Splitting: Rubber deterio-rates and separates from the frame because of sun and solvent damage.
Tips On Preserving Blades
While no wiper blade lasts forever, ACDelco Profession-al Service Center Program technicians recommend these tips to prolong blade life and preserve your vis-ibility:
• Clean your windshield at every fi ll-up.
• Wipe the rubber blade with a damp paper towel to remove loose dirt.
• Never use windshield wipers to remove ice from your windshield. The stress can damage the blade as well as the motor. Use an ice scraper or defroster.
• In the winter, pull up wip-ers to prevent the squeegee from icing and sticking to the glass.
• Use a quality washer sol-vent; cheap ones are full of alcohol, which dries the rub-ber.

TIRE MAINTE-NANCE IS KEY TO SAFE SUM-MER DRIVING
(NAPS)—Tires are the only thing between you and the road, so it’s imperative mo-torists stay on top of tire maintenance. Proper tire maintenance is important all year, but especially in the summer months as the temperature starts heating up and the frequency of tire blowouts increases.
Improper tire care contrib-utes to 195 fatalities and 6,300 injuries each year, according to the National Highway Traffi c Safety Ad-ministration. The agency also estimates that about 11,000 tire-related crash-es occur annually. Simply checking your tire pressure can help you and your passengers stay safe during your next summer journey.
To get the most from your tires this summer, here are fi ve maintenance tips from the world’s largest independent tire and wheel retailer—Discount Tire:
1. Get Pressure Right— Low tire pressure can decrease fuel economy. Tires may lose up to one pound PSI (per square inch) of air pressure per month. The specifi c infl ation pressure number may be found on the vehicle placard located inside the driver’s door. Don’t forget those trailer tires. Checking the tire pressure for boat, travel and utility trailers is as important as your car or truck.
2. Don’t Overload—Overloading your vehicle or trailer de-creases fuel economy due to increased cargo weight. Han-dling, control and braking are also negatively impacted.
3. Rotate Before You Go—Regular rotation helps achieve uni-form tire wear and improves road performance. Tires rotated every 5,000 miles have longer life and will help maximize your tire investment.
4. Straighten Up—Proper wheel alignment provides safe, predictable vehicle control and helps tires wear evenly and last longer. If your tires squeal when you turn or if you notice your steering wheel veers to one side while driving straight, it’s time to get your wheels re-aligned.
5. Bald Isn’t Beautiful—Lack of tread aff ects the tire’s ability to grip the road, especially in wet conditions. Make sure tires don’t have uneven wear, which indicates something is wrong with the tire. High or low spots or unusually smooth areas may decrease traction and increase the risk of road accidents.
“Maintaining tire pressure is one of the most critical things motorists can do to improve road safety while getting the most from their tires,” said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “Im-properly in fl ated tires lead to decreased steering and braking control as well as excessive tire wear and fuel consumption. Taking fi ve minutes each month to inspect your tires will go a long way in keeping you and your passengers safe.”
A Five-Minute Fix
Checking tire pressure and tread is easy and can pay divi-dends when it comes to fuel economy and handling. Don’t
go by appearances. Use a tire gauge to check the pressure since a tire can be 50 percent underinfl ated but still not ap-pear fl at.
Make it a habit to check tire pressure every month and always before a long journey. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s recom-mended tire pressure and don’t forget to check the spare and trailer tires.
“Most people forget to check the pressure in the spare tire and come to fi nd that when they need it, the spare is fl at,” said Marrufo. “This simple check could keep you from a costly tow if you get stuck with a fl at.”
Road trippers should also check tire tread depth by using the “penny test.” Insert a penny upside down into the tread. If you see Abe Lincoln’s entire head, it’s time to replace the tire.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County
Working Things Out As A Community
Every community in Southern Saratoga County has its own unique personality, yet all share a certain in-timacy - even the big towns feel like small ones in our part of the world. The communities mourned together as prominent citizens like John Michaels of Bolton Landing and Walt Polak of Halfmoon passed away, coming out in droves to attend funerals and filling social media with tributes and kind words. Also recently, communities pulled together to battle vio-lent weather that threatened our region with ominous clouds, extremely heavy rain and flash flooding. Pho-tos of nearly submerged cars under the “Welcome To Mechanicville” sign and reports of the damage to nearby stores provided a sobering realization of the damage Mother Nature can cause in a very short time. But our communities are strong and resilient. Just as nearby Waterford has come together since 2011 to “build back better”, so the citizens of Me-chanicville set to work cleaning up the mess the minute the water receded. It really is a special blessing to live among such wonderful, civic-minded people. In Ballston Spa, the role of community takes on a different sense as the ongoing debate about Walmart and other big box stores has been the topic of con-versation on Facebook and other social media. Emotions do run high at times
like this, and some forceful opinions have been heard on both sides of the issue. My role as Chamber executive often puts me in positions where people I care about are on opposite sides of the equation, and it is difficult to see such hurt feelings among neighbors. But the knowledge of our community spirit provides great confidence and optimism – I strongly believe that whatever the outcome is at the intersections of Routes 67 and 50, the citizens of Ballston Spa will ultimately be stronger, closer and better prepared for an even brighter future.
