2015 PROJECT EASTER BUNNY

CAPITAL DISTRICT – Floydwarriors.com “Helping Families Cope with Cancer, One Household at a Time” is very pleased to announce its 6th annual run of Project Easter Bunny. Floydwarriors.com founder Lisa Morahan began this effort after experiencing Easter Sunday in 2009 too ill to make one basket up for her son while in the middle of chemotherapy treatment. In 2010 enough toys and candy were collected to make up 100 baskets, 135 in 2011, 190 in 2012, 225 in 2013 and 290 in 2014. Our goal is to collect enough new small toys and candy for 350 bas-kets this year and add yet another oncology center to our list of glad recipients. Several area cancer organizations and hospitals caring for cancer patients will receive this year’s bounty so children of those in treatment will have a nice big basket to open on Easter morning. Loca-tions to receive baskets hope to include The CR Wood Center at Glens Falls Hospital, Samari-tan Hospital in Troy, The Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology Center at Saratoga Hospital, The Community Hospice of Saratoga, The Hope Club in Latham, New York Oncology Hematology of Albany and Rexford, CRAAB, To Life! and families helped by floydwarriors.com. If you are interested in helping this effort, please bring unopened candy and brand new small toys to donate to the following locations until March 17th: The CR Wood Center in Glens Falls Hospi-tal, The Malta Community Center, Bella Rouge at Clifton Park Center, The Hope Club in Latham and any Ballston Spa National Bank location.

EXPLAINING THE MYTHICAL LEPRECHAUNCeltic culture is ripe with legends and myths that help to en-tertain and explain the mysteries of life. Among such lore are leprechauns, which are mythological figures that continue to impart whimsy into St. Patrick's Day celebrations even now.

The word "leprechaun" is derived from the Irish lu chorpain, meaning "small body." Various attributes have been used to describe leprechauns. While the origins and the history sur-rounding leprechauns differ, one common thread is that these creatures are surrounded in magic. Some believed leprechauns were descendents of the Goddess Danu and the Tuatha De Danaan. They inhabited Ireland long before the Celts arrived, and when the Celts did come, brandishing iron swords that could penetrate the leprechauns' magic, lepre-chauns fled to underground abodes in the soil shielded by magical, hidden entrances. Some say leprechauns still reside under the damp soil.

Other stories describe leprechauns as smart, devious crea-tures of fairy folk who were the only fairies to have a profes-sion other than cattle trading. Leprechauns were shoemakers to the fairies who took the shape of men wearing green or red coats and hats and participated in mischief. Leprechauns hoarded all of their gold coins in a pot under a rainbow. Catching a leprechaun was tricky, as these "wee folk," as they were often described in folk tales, were quite adept at remaining out of arm's reach. Should one be captured by a human, folklore stated that the leprechaun must grant three wishes to earn his release.

Some viewed leprechauns as serious sorts, keeping people away from sacred places and helping to control people's be-haviors. Historians believe this was one for leaders to estab-lish societal rules.

Descriptions of leprechauns and tales of their antics have sur-vived in Ireland for centuries. When the Irish began emigrat-ing to America during the Great Potato Famine, they brought with them their mythology and stories. However, the tale of the leprechaun has changed over time.

The Irish-American view of the leprechaun differed from the more traditional Irish view. Americans saw leprechauns as frivolous and silly. Leprechauns were depicted with broad, pug noses and out-of-style ratty clothing. Many negative stereotypes Americans directed at the swarms of Irish immi-

grants arriving in the United States were exemplified in the insensitive and, at times, hateful illustrations of leprechauns.

Leprechaun mythology has been alive and well in Ireland for more than a thousand years and will likely live on for centu-ries more.

SELDOM-HEARD SAINT PATRICK’S DAY FACTS

There are many things the public knows about Saint Patrick’s Day, but there’s much they may not know about the holiday or Irish-American heritage for that matter. Here are some facts and trivia that might surprise even the most devoted of Patty’s Day revelers.

* Despite St. Patrick being alive centuries earlier, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations didn’t begin until 1737.

* More people of Irish heritage live in the United States than currently live in all of Ireland. Irish-Americans living stateside predominantly reside in the North Atlantic states.

* Saint Patrick angered the Celtic Druids many times by con-verting pagans to Christianity. The Druids put him in jail on numerous occasions.

* Green is not the official color affiliated with Saint Patrick. It is really blue. However, green became a familiar hue during the nineteenth century more for being associated with the magic of Irish legends than Saint Patrick himself.

* The three-leaf shamrock has more historical significance with regards to Saint Patrick’s day than a four-leaf clover. That’s because the three leaves were believed to be used by St. Patrick to explain the Christian doctrine of the Holy Trinity, where God exists as three persons.

* For 67 years, Saint Patrick’s Day was a “dry” holiday in Ireland. James O’Mara, a member of Irish parliament, introduced a bill in 1903 that made Saint Patrick’s Day a religious holiday in the country. Therefore, local pubs were obligated to close. The law was overturned in 1970.

* According to their Web site, Hallmark has been selling green Saint Patrick’s Day cards since the early 1920s, now selling as many as 15 million annually.

* Contrary to popular belief, Ireland does not top the list with respect to showing Irish pride. New York City boasts the larg-est parade honoring the holiday and Irish heritage.

WHAT IS CORNED BEEF?

At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the “beef”part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned”part.

Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the word “corn”comes from Anglo-Saxon times when meat was dry-cured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it.

Corned beef brines today contain more than just salt. They may have different spices and flavorings to add to the taste of the meat.

GETTING THE BEST PRICE FOR YOUR HOUSE TO HELP FINANCE YOUR RETIREMENT

(NewsUSA) - Have you forgotten something in fi guring where

you're going to retire to?

Let's see, you've researched which states tax Social Secu-rity income (only 14, including Colorado, Connecticut, Kan-sas, North Dakota and Vermont).

And you've even consulted the numbers-crunchers at Bankrate.com to learn which states scored highest overall in everything from cost of living to access to health care (South Dakota, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming).

But here's a question for all you homeowners: Given the results of a new report from Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate -- 57 percent of boomers say they plan to move to a new home in retirement -- what are you doing right now to make sure your current house fetches a good price to help fi nance your retirement dreams?

"As people grapple with whether to pull up stakes, there's small margin for error," the New York Times' coverage of the report noted.

Here's some tips for preparing what's likely your biggest asset for prospective buyers:

* Get rid of the clutter. No doubt you have years worth of memories on display. But they're your memories. And painful as it may be, it's time to accept that not everyone appreciates having turned your den, for example, into a shrine to the '69 Mets.

"Buyers shouldn't be distracted from imagining them-selves living in your space," says Patsy O'Neill, a sales associ-ate with Sotheby's in Montclair, New Jersey.

* Think twice before doing any trendy remodeling. Espe-cially if your home is older, you may be tempted to go as far in trying to spruce things up as, say, tearing down a wall be-tween the kitchen and an adjoining room just because An-gie's List says creating the feel of more space is "one of the hottest trends in home remodeling."

Well who's to say it'll still be hot in six months or a year?

* Think "curb appeal." There's a reason roof replacement consistently makes Remodeling magazine's annual Cost vs. Value Report, and is up 11.2 percent this year over even last year: A roof is the fi rst thing potential buyers notice -- even from down the street -- and you've already lost the sale if yours looks like hell.

"It's a huge turn-off ," says O'Neill, "and makes people pre-disposed to fi nd even more things they don't like." For the

HOW TO PURCHASE YOUR FIRST HOME IN 2015

(NAPS)—The American dream of homeownership may not be as hard to attain as many people seem to fear. A few in-triguing facts and hints can help.

The Facts

While existing home sales have risen recently, the National Association of Realtors’ annual Profi le of Home Buyers and Sellers found that the share of fi rst-time buyers recently fell to its lowest level (33 percent) in nearly three decades.

Many fi rst-time buyers experience obstacles on the path to homeownership, including diffi culty saving for a down pay-ment and tight credit conditions.

The Hints

Consider these tips:

• Find and work with an expert Realtor who knows the neighborhood. Nothing can replace the local knowledge and real insight that professional Realtors can provide to fi rst-time buyers as they navigate the complex home buying pro-cess.

According to the Profi le of Home Buyers and Sellers, while most home buyers in the past year began their home search online, 90 percent ended up purchasing their home through an agent. Realtors are not only the source of online real estate data, they also use their unparalleled local market knowledge and resources to help close the deal for buyers and sellers.

• Meet with a lender to determine how much you can aff ord. Last year, the median price a fi rst-time buyer spent on a home was $169,000. Chances are, you don’t have that amount of cash lying around. That’s why 95 percent of fi rst-time buyers who bought a home in the past year fi nanced their purchase.

Find out what you can aff ord with a preapproval from a lender. A lender will check your credit history, current debt obligations and other expenses to determine the amount of money you’re qualifi ed to borrow at a specifi c interest rate. Don’t forget to consider the other costs of homeownership, such as taxes, insurance and utilities.

• Identify your housing wish list. Although 46 per-cent of fi rst-time buyers got a single-family home in the sub-urbs, you may prefer a condo in an urban environment near public transportation.

Regardless of your preferences, identifying and sharing your wish list can help your Realtor focus on the right home for you, scan listings and connect with those who represent sell-ers to zero in on homes for sale that meet your budget and criteria.

Keep this advice in mind and you may soon fi nd yourself waking up in the home of your dreams.

SIMPLE DEFENSIVE DRIVING

TECHNIQUES ANYONE CAN EMPLOY

Driving defensively is a great way for motorists to reduce their risks of accident, main-tain their vehicles over the long haul and save money on their auto insurance. But driving can be habit-form-ing, and over time many drivers develop habits that can compromise their safety on the road.

No driver wants to make roads less safe, and many may just need to reacquaint themselves with the follow-ing defensive driving tech-niques they learned way back when they fi rst started driving as teenagers.

• Avoid distractions. Older drivers didn’t have too many things to distract them from the road, but nowadays it’s easy to be distracted whether you’re driving alone on an empty road or sitting in rush hour traffi c with dozens of your fel-low commuters. That’s because today’s vehicles may be equipped with televisions, smartphone hookups and high-quality sound systems that can take drivers’ attention away from the road. Drivers may even be bringing additional dis-tractions with them into their vehicles. When getting behind the wheel, keep your stereo speakers low and turn off all of your devices so you aren’t tempted to check emails or text messages while driving.

• Don’t be in such a hurry. Perhaps the most eff ective defen-sive driving technique is to slow down when on the road. That’s easier said than done, especially for commuters who are running late and trying to get to the offi ce on time. But making a conscious eff ort to slow down, even if you are a few minutes late for work or running late for an appointment, can mean the diff erence between getting into an accident or staying safe on the road. If you know you are running late, don’t try to compensate by driving fast. Instead, call ahead to let whoever might be waiting for you know that you will be

a few minutes late.

• Don’t lane hop. Frequent switching between lanes can make other drivers nervous, increasing the risk of an acci-dent. In addition, sudden or frequent lane changes can make it diffi cult for drivers to maintain their focus on the road and see more than a few cars ahead of them. Drivers who have been on the road for a long time may feel confi dent in their abilities to quickly switch between lanes, but fellow motor-ists may fi nd such shifting distracting and begin to drive er-ratically as a result. Stay in one lane as long as possible, and only pass cars on the left.

• Don’t respond to aggressive drivers. If a fellow driver is driv-ing aggressively, slow down and let them pass or pull over and let them get far away from you before you return to the roadway. Studies have indicated that road rage incidents es-calate when drivers make eye contact with one another. Even if you are not at fault, it’s up to you to avoid a potentially dan-gerous situation and protect yourself and your passengers.

Defensive driving techniques reduce the risk of accidents and help to keep cars running strong over the long haul. Driv-ers can benefi t from periodically revisiting such techniques and practicing them on roadways.

DID YOU KNOW?Insuring multiple vehicles and/or drivers on an auto insur-ance policy may prove cheaper than having each of those drivers and vehicles insured separately on multiple policies. That’s because insurers typically off er bulk rates to policy holders willing to insure several vehicles and/or drivers on a single policy. But such discounts typically adhere to guide-lines that dictate eligibility. For example, if the head of a family wants to insure his or her children on the same auto insurance policy he or she has, then those children typically must list their parents’ home as their legal residence. Blood relations also may infl uence eligibility for mul-tiple driver policy discounts. In general, only blood rela-tives or relatives by marriage can benefi t from multiple driver discounts. However, non-related motorists who jointly own a vehicle may be eligible for discounts.
