FED BY THE LORD Jesus’ words “This is my body” and “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” were only part of his table bless-ing. Jesus twice said: “Do this in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24, 25). This is the good news of today’s solemnity. Like the five thousand hungry souls, we are fed by our Lord. This is not food that satisfies for only a short time, until the next meal. It is food that lasts and changes us. It is food for sharing in much the same way as Melchizedek did when he brought bread and wine to the returning Abraham. As children of God’s reign, we are blessed to be able to receive and share God’s gift. And we do so in the way most appropriate to our state in life—as parents, children, husbands, wives, or religious. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#135

Culture, thought and education

The Homily

Let us now look at preaching within the liturgy, which calls for serious consideration by pastors. I will dwell in particular, and even somewhat meticulously, on the homi-ly and its preparation, since so many concerns have been expressed about this important ministry, and we cannot simply ignore them. The homily is the touchstone for judging a pastor’s closeness and ability to communicate to his people. We know that the faithful attach great im-portance to it, and that both they and their ordained minis-ters suffer because of homilies: the laity from having to listen to them and the clergy from having to preach them! It is sad that this is the case. The homily can actually be an intense and happy experience of the Spirit, a consoling encounter with God’s word, a constant source of renewal and growth. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Over the coming 40 weeks or so, Pope Francis is going to share with us his and the Church's wisdom on homilies. And you think that Fr. Terry rattles on too much? Well, think again. Pope Fran-cis begins by reminding us that the homily is an essential part of the Liturgy and is the touchstone of the pastor's closeness and ability to communicate to his people. God help us. Experience tells us that homily time is too often one of suffering for both the poor people and those who are preaching. How many of us breathe a sigh of relief or mutter silently as the homily finally concludes: '' Thank God that's over.'' How sad; when in truth the homily is intended and should be a happy and intense experience in the Spirit and bring all of us consolation, renewal and growth in our faith and in our everyday lives. Let us hope and pray that over the coming weeks most or all of us will be drawn closer to God and each other by our mutual ap-preciation of the grace of our homilies.
