PRECIOUS BLOOD On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The pre-cious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The origins of today’s solemnity lie in thirteenth-century Belgium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a trou-bled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to hon-or the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treas-ure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reli-quary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great ba-silica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Bel-gium today. The bishop carries the relic through the nar-row streets, and the people wear medieval costumes and act out scenes from the Bible. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#239

Social dialogue as a contribution to peace.

The Church proclaims “the Gospel of peace” (Eph 6:15) and she wishes to cooperate with all national and international authorities in safeguarding this im-mense universal good. By preaching Jesus Christ, who is himself peace (cf. Eph 2:14), the new evange-lization calls on every baptized person to be a peace-maker and a credible witness to a reconciled life. In a culture which privileges dialogue as a form of en-counter, it is time to devise a means for building con-sensus and agreement while seeking the goal of a just, responsive and inclusive society. The principal author, the historic subject of this process, is the peo-ple as a whole and their culture, and not a single class, minority, group or elite. We do not need plans drawn up by a few for the few, or an enlightened or outspoken minority which claims to speak for every-one. It is about agreeing to live together, a social and cultural pact.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks—As Followers of Jesus Christ, as members of his Church we are called to follow a Gospel of Peace. We are called from the depth of our spirits to cooperate with all authorities in promoting and safeguarding this universal good. The truly evangelized person is by his nature a peacemaker and a reconciler. We witness all around us bitter encounter, we must seek to build consensus and agreement. Our goal is a just, responsive and inclusive society. Everyone must be involved, it is impossible to build an inclusive solution on the foun-dation of excluding some. A single class, a minority, a group or an elite no matter how clever they may think they are, no matter how generous they believe they are, even a group who feel they are inspired from on High need to consult comprehensively. Any group will protect themselves first, instinctively and of necessity. We have to be, every one of us, all of us in the mix.
