A MINDSET OF SERVICE There’s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visiting going on in our readings today. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, celebrating the kind of righteousness that Abraham prac-tices. Then, in his letter to the Colossians, Saint Paul de-scribes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God’s steward, brings the word of God to their com-munity. Finally, Luke’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Martha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home. Amid all this coming and going, we are invited to pay attention to the ways we tend to the needs of others. Each of us can ask, How am I pre-sent to God and others in my life? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Pancake Breakfast There will be no Pancake Breakfast in the month of August. We will resume in September.

LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

United by the same concern. #9. At the same time, Bartholomew has drawn atten-tion to the ethical and spiritual roots of environmen-tal problems, which require that we look for solu-tions not only in technology but in a change of hu-manity; otherwise we would be dealing merely with symptoms. He asks us to replace consumption with sacrifice, greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing, an asceticism which “entails learn-ing to give, and not simply to give up. It is a way of loving, of moving gradually away from what I want to what God’s world needs. It is liberation from fear, greed and compulsion”. As Christians, we are also called “to accept the world as a sacrament of communion, as a way of sharing with God and our neighbours on a global scale. It is our humble con-viction that the divine and the human meet in the slightest detail in the seamless garment of God’s cre-ation, in the last speck of dust of our planet”. Fr. Terry’s Remarks: Pope Francis gives two paragraphs to Patriarch Bartholomew, it is his way of honoring the Patriarch but also assuring us that his words are vital. Last week the Patriarch reminded us that our harm of the planet is sinful. This week he tells us why. In our Sacraments we use bread, wine, water, oil, words and gestures to bring grace, life and forgiveness into our lives. They are essential elements of our sacramental life. What the Patriarch is reminding us this week is; if bread, wine, water and oil are so sacramental how much more is the Earth that supplies them? We are not just talking about goods and money and convenience, our Moth-er Earth is in essence sacramental. Our ancestors of old sensed this long before our theologians said; Sacrament.
