THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today’s Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It’s only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week’s readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke. LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#170

Personal accompaniment in processes of growth

Although it sounds obvious, spiritual accompaniment must lead others ever closer to God, in whom we attain true freedom. Some people think they are free if they can avoid God; they fail to see that they remain existentially orphaned, helpless, homeless. They cease being pilgrims and become drifters, flitting around themselves and never getting anywhere. To accompany them would be counter-productive if it became a sort of therapy supporting their self-absorption and ceased to be a pilgrimage with Christ to the Father. Fr. Terry’s Remarks—Today Pope Francis touches on a course of action that is very, very difficult for us in our reality of today. At what point does our words, our actions, our behavior change from helping others to doing harm? When am I truly making things better or doing even more damage? This has become for many of us more acute when it comes to faith and morality. The old days seemed to have been much simpler, most of us were pretty clear on what was right or what was wrong. We knew when to speak out or correct when we heard or saw someone saying or doing a wrong. Then in our minds there was no question as to which was the right faith or what word or action was wrong. In our interconnected world of today, we have become so aware of nuances and an ever increasing world of possibilities that we are al-most paralyzed into silence and non intervention- I'm ex-cluding Facebook and Its cohorts- It's not that we don't want to intervene and do the right thing. We see persons acting decisively in what they and we once perceived were bad situations with sad results for all concerned. We feel we can no longer just declare: '' I did my duty regard-less of the consequences.'' I know prudence was in the past rightly prized and is still a primary virtue but it has become much more sensitive! These days even Pope Francis himself is negatively criticized for not being more decisive and regulatory. Yet we cannot and must not forget or fail to proclaim to all that God is an Abso-lute necessity in everyone's life for their fulfillment and that Jesus calls us incessantly to preach the Gospel of love and inclusion.
