Christian Brix Tillegreen Lead, Open Innovation Novozymes
Searching for Neverland
All around the world new technology are being developed in a rapid speed, by Universities and global companies. But the technological development of high quality is no longer reserved for the polished floors and anywhere in the world arises "do-it-yourself" movement and maker spaces. The Danish founded bio-tech Company Novozymes chose to explore and thereby ask themselves the question: What can a global high-tech company learn from these disruptive minds in the global Bio-Hacker community? Get an insightful story of how the Innovation Department at Novozymes has discovered surprising, powerful and different projects and new forms of innovations by working with maker spaces. Get perspectives on how these global communities can affect disruption and development in industries, today and in the future.
Christian Brix Tillegreen is Global Innovation Developer in the Danish bio-tech company Novozymes. He is leading the open innovation activities which includes bringing ideas to life and develop tools for Innovation Management in Novozymes. Mariana Southern Head of Innovation William Hill
Muddling Through
There are probably dozens of definitions for the job of Head of Innovation and with them dozens of perspectives on how it should be done. Without any official credentials on the subject I was asked to give my personal account of running an innovation team in the context of an innovation-hungry organisation that started on the high street and has grown to employ 16,000 people over 80 years. In the past year or so I have learned that when it comes to innovation culture trumps everything and there really aren’t any rules. In order to get by, I stick to some guiding principles and lots of gut feel. Join me for an honest and straightforward perspective on a modern job without a consistent job description.
Mariana Southern is William Hill’s Head of Innovation and is responsible for driving a roadmap of innovative concepts whilst building an in-house capability for innovation, with the velocity and autonomy that it inherently requires. She joined the company in 2013 as Head of Product Strategy. In a previous life Mariana was a UX professional who has worked solely with gaming companies for the past 8 years. Before that Mariana spent a few years in UCL as a Research Fellow following her PhD in Cognitive Psychology. That’s where she started her quest to understand how people behave when searching for information on the web.

Innovation - Closing the Gap Between the Current User Experience & the Ideal One
There are many approaches to innovation, from dramatically improving something to creating something totally new. My philosophy is that innovation seeks to continuously close the gap between the current user experiences and the ideal one. But, here starts the big questions - so what's the ideal user experience and how do you define it? This presentation will look at these big questions and explore my understanding of the ideal, which starts from the right combination of the functional and emotional benefits of a product; which demands that we look at the functionality, design, cost, uniqueness of a product, and how loveable it is, all at the same time i.e. its total user experience.

This includes the development of the bespoke ‘Activ8 Innovation Service’, which seeks to generate new ideas and IP from across several communities, as well as maximising the benefit from R&D by connecting the business with customers’ problems in a faster and agile way.
Joachim heads up Fujitsu’s customer centric innovation programme in the UK & Ireland. Customers include large corporate companies from a range of industries, as well as large UK public sector organisations .Joachim and his team lead a structured approach to innovation, researching customer pain points, generating ideas from diverse communities and exploring technology solutions from across the Fujitsu global family and partners. Innovating at the Edge
The edge effect can be a rich source of innovation. When different disciplines and ways of thinking collide, sparks can fly. The problem, as we all know, is that it can be hard to understand the viewpoint of someone, or an organisation so different from your own. Across Atkins we have over 18,000 colleagues spanning design, project management and engineering. A focus on collaboration globally, and locally is key to tapping into the breadth of thinking to use the edge effect to deliver innovation. In the presentation I will discuss two of the areas we are focusing on to deliver innovation with purpose. How we convene experts from multiple industries to deliver value from our clients; combining ideas from multiple sectors, bringing the outside in. And how we are building new partnerships with organisations outside traditional design and engineering sector to create new services.
Alec McCrindle Creative Director, EMEA Yahoo!
Alec is the Creative Director at Yahoo for EMEA, part of the Yahoo Studio team. He has worked at Yahoo for over 10 years, and in various design leadership roles in South African and the UK since the late 90's.
How We Be ca m e a Mo re Cre a t i ve Organisation
The Yahoo custom solutions team – Studio – have been responsible for the integration of Tumblr, the fastest growing social platform, into our offering for EMEA. While Tumblr had the potential to add exponential social amplification to an established and successful business, there were various challenges. Aligning the platform, resources and processes, and most importantly, evolving our creative strategy to ensure we have a unique offering in the market. Part of this evolution was how we sought to further enable teams by democratising creativity across the organisation. Our approach will be presented during the session.
Paul Gardien is Vice President of Philips Design and as member of the Philips Design Board responsible for both the strategic development of the global design function and the Design Research & Innovation program. In his strategy role, he has been instrumental in transforming Philips Design from a service unit into a global function. The Design Research & Innovation program creates new design competences, future visions and new propositions for Philips and has won numerous awards. The drive in the program is to create meaningful and relevant propositions based on a solid understanding of how these will evolve in the future, while ensuring that the propositions land in the various businesses increasing their hit rate of innovation.
Connecting the Dots: Innovating in Ecosystems
At the moment we are witnessing a shift in innovation in Philips, as we are moving beyond products to solutions and ecosystems. Design has a crucial role to play in creating a meaningful and relevant user experience and needs to be well positioned in order to do so. But next to a great user experience, a lot of things need to come together at the right time in bringing innovation successfully to the market. Therefore in Philips Design we start from a shared view of how the larger ecosystem should look, but then quickly start collaborative experimentation to develop solutions that resonate with end users. Especially in ecosystems this is of utmost importance as different disciplines and players must come together to provide a complete solution (e.g. in health and wellbeing: companies as well as hospitals and insurers). In Philips cocreation and design thinking plays a critical role in this collaboration and the development of solutions improving people’s lives.

Matt Chapman Head of Innovation Services Spigit
Harnessing Greater Insights from the Crowd
Businesses all over the world are embracing innovation, but not all know how to truly make the most of their best resource - the crowd. The sourcing of ideas is of course crucial to innovation, however few organisations are really making the most of this resource in developing and refining new concepts.
Teodoro Alvarez Fadon Director, Design & Innovation Ferrovial
Do We Really Innovate in the Construction Industry?
People say that it is easy to innovate on construction projects because we need to overcome so many challenges in a very short period of time, therefore the only alternative is to innovate to provide a solution. The difficulty however is to identify, record and spread these innovations. Furthermore, the difficulty is to educate our teams and to convince them that many of the daily activities that they consider part of their daily job are new and innovative processes, procedures or tools that could be potentially applied on other projects. But is this really innovation? Are we followers or leaders in the innovation race? Is technology compatible with our industry or it is only a trend that needs to be applied without providing too much value to the final client?
With almost 20 years’ experience in the construction industry acting on behalf of the client as well as working as Designer, Consultant and Project Manager in different companies and countries around the world, Teodoro has gained a holistic view of this sector from different perspectives and a sound knowledge about the challenges that must be faced on complex projects on a daily basis. Teodoro has also gained extensive experience in leading design teams (architects and multi-disciplinary engineers) on major projects with international contracting teams from initial proposals, through to handover and has been at the forefront of Ferrovial Agroman's Health and Safety and environmental awareness campaigns on all his projects.

How Would You Spend $1.6 Trillion?
Einstein said the true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination. This year $1.6 TRILLION will be spent globally on R&D. If that was your budget would you spend it on imagination or knowledge? There’s never been a time in history when so much of what can be imagined can be implemented. In this talk Paul describes a managed open innovation model with a diverse global inventor community of 10,000 that is not only solving problems but is the foundation of a new industry in the creation of ideas and their implementation. Paul’s talk will include case studies in areas as diverse as mining, agriculture, finance, construction, and food and beverages.

Phil Oxley Head of Efficiency Value Management High Speed Rail
Sorry, But Why Are We Innovating? Identifying the Catalysts & Purpose for Innovation in Construction Mega Projects
Doing innovation is all about getting people, processes and systems lined up to provide a capability to innovate; right? The biggest challenge HS2 has faced is innovating in a way which nurtures innovation as a way of being innovative(verb) rather than doing innovation (noun); supporting people and, presumably, business objectives. HS2 intuitively knows it needs to innovate but knowing what, when and why has been the most significant questions; we all know that the how to is the easy bit, right?
Phil is currently working with HS2 Limited as Head of Efficiency and Value Management. This role works within the Programme and Strategy Directorate and provides a focal point for all efficiency work across the HS2 project. This includes applying creative management and innovation to our packages, and growing a creative community beyond the business and supply chain boundaries.

Fostering Entrepreneurship in Large Organisations
We know that entrepreneurial organisations outperform others - they are more innovative, competitive, adaptable, longer-lived and deliver better financial returns - and yet most organisations die within a few decades, partly because they fail to remain entrepreneurial as they grow and mature. 'Climate for Entrepreneurship' is a collaborative research project between the Met Office and the University of Exeter Business School to study the critical success factors to fostering entrepreneurship within large organisations. Despite the abundance of generic advice and case studies, every organisation is unique and it fol lows that measures to foster entrepreneurship must be tailored. The first phase of CfE has developed and tested a prototype management tool c a p a b l e o f g e n e r a t i n g a g r a n u l a r v i e w o f entrepreneurship within an organisation and identifying the most important management levers for fostering entrepreneurship at that organisation. We will share promising results from the pilot at the Met Office and discuss the wider implications for organisations seeking to build strategic capability in entrepreneurship.
Currently Natalie is working at the Met Office as an Innovation and Marketing Consultant as well as working in the NHS as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist. Her current work at the Met Office involves the facilitation of discussions and activities around innovation at all levels within the organisation. She focuses on how best to engage people in a way of working that not only increases the business and efficiencies within the organisation but encourages people to be the best they can be.
