Internal Entrepreneurship as a Vehicle for Strategic Growth: From “Skunkworks” to Execution

Strategy executives are increasingly charged with developing new markets and lines of business to drive growth and business model innovation. One way of achieving this – outside of traditional internal structures or avenues such as M&A – is creating internal innovation units that incubate and launch new initiatives adjacent to the core business. This process of innovating outside the core presents challenges and opportunities. This session reviews general best practices and case-based lessons learned from creating internal entrepreneurial initiatives within a large organization. Themes addressed include s t r u c t u r e , i n c e n t i v e s , c h a n g e m a n a g e m e n t , culture,product/business development, the role of talent, and data-driven decision-making.

Implementing New Strategies for Long-Lasting Success

So you developed a new strategy... and now what? There is a large amount of work that is put into developing a

new strategy. In successful efforts, senior leaders are engaged in shaping the new direction and take personal ownership for the strategy. This is the fun part that stimulates intellectually curious leaders and can take several months to complete. However, once done the real work starts. Now it comes to getting the strategy off of paper and into action to impact daily decision making. This is what truly makes strategies create value. This presentation focuses on practical examples of how a company can change the direction and align the entire organization to deliver the strategy every where, every day. Topics include breaking down the strategy into plain-speak, changing management systems, adjusting the strategic planning process in line with the new strategy, cascading goals/objectives, tracking strategic measures, prioritizing initiatives, and effective communications.

Demystifying IoT: Hype or Revolution?

The "internet of things" appears poised to summit the hype-cycle peak this year.   Strategy leaders require a balanced and sober view of this trend and the implications for their industries.   On the one hand, IoT promises to bring us a fully networked world of smart objects whose behavior is driven by an unimaginable wealth of data.  On the other hand, time horizons appear long. Fragmented technical standards, unanswered societal and policy questions as well as our ability as humans to comprehend and manage these new networks are meaningful barriers.   Where will the IoT create meaningful value next?  What are examples from today?  How do we determine the implications for our industries, customers and businesses?

Building & Positioning High-Performing Strategy Teams

Putting a strategy function on an organizational chart is a great indicator that your organization believes strategy is a critical component in building financial value. However, are they committed to fully leveraging a strategy group and executing accordingly? Positioning an internal strategy group within an organization is critical to ensure that initiatives, long-term plans, and operational decision-making properly diagnose, exploit, and measure opportunities. Taking a New & Robust Approach to Strategic Decision-Making

Cassandra will speak about how we (and our clients) can take a new and much more robust approach to strategic decision-making so that our choices today will turn out to stand the test of time.   Why should you care? Organisations that focus too intensely on the optimisation of their business over the near term, and who seek to build incrementally on the status quo, may not be here in ten years time. You could call it the Nokia Effect - $100bn lost in barely a decade.

Strategy at Google

Big companies typically struggle with incubating new businesses in-house. Short-term investor pressures, disproportionate allocation of management mindshare to the core business, and a mere transplant of the mothership's culture are typical challenges, all of which choke off new incubations before they can grow. To  help navigate these challenges, companies need to take an unconventional approach to measuring business success, planning execution and   designing   the underlying organization, until the incubation has fully matured.

Crowdsourcing Your Growth Strategy For More Optimal Outcomes

It is well known that the success of a growth strategy is dependent upon the execution as much as it is upon the plan itself. However, there is an inherent tradeoff – the most optimal strategies are often more time-consuming to craft and execute. However, by “crowdsourcing” strategy from employees, strategy leaders can rapidly form optimal growth plans AND ensure execution by gaining new levels of stakeholder buy-in. Join us as we discuss how this now possible with new technologies and share a case study of how a Fortune 50 company is re-writing the rules for Strategic Planning and Growth.

A Case for Data Intelligence in StrategyBig data has opened the door for a revolution in strategy, yet most big data is still applied to tactical applications such as using internal data to drive incremental improvements in customer churn or better ad targeting. Data intelligence is the next cognitive step after big data, and has only recently become possible. During this session we will make the case for using large, unstructured external data sets to derive true data intelligence that drives strategic decision making. We will demonstrate new data intelligence techniques to:

• Understanding your positioning in the public narrative • Foresee innovation and disruption in your sector• Develop truly data-driven sales strategy
