• 19.11.1600 – 30.01.1649• King of England, Scotland, Ireland.• Second son of King James VI of Scotland.• Quarrelled with the Parliament of England.• Dissolved Parliament three times. • Country split in two.

The Civil War

• 1642-1651• Cavaliers and Roundheads.• 1645 the Royalist army was finally defeated.• Oliver Cromwell.• “Model” army• King was sold to Parliament.• Escaped 1648.• Short lived second Civil War.• In 1649 he was captured and executed

Oliver Cromwell

• Emerged as the power in the country.• Dissolved the parliament.• Started England’s only dictatorship.• HIGHLY religious man (Fast day)• Died in 1658.• His son Richard succeeded him.• Free elections.• The Commonwealth 1649-1660.

• Returned with skill.• Shared his fathers belief.• Was attracted to the Catholic Church.• First parties.• Charles had no heir and his brother James II

succeeded him in 1685.
