May 2012 Page 1 Chamber Golf Scramble – June 8 Bridger Creek Golf Course It is time again for the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce’s Golf Scramble. The Membership Services Committee is busy getting hole/green sponsors and gathering hole prizes. Sponsoring this event is good advertising for your business, and a great way to support the Belgrade Chamber. Hole/ green sponsorships are $50 or an enhanced hole sponsorship is $100. For an enhanced sponsorship, you can hand out giveaways, serve food, and promote your business even more. We are looking for hole prizes that are at least $25 in value, and we need 18 of them. An example for Hole 1 might be whoever had the longest drive on that hole gets a prize. If you don’t have something from your business to donate, you can also give gift certificates to restaurants or other places. Please make sure that your gift certificates are purchased from Belgrade Chamber members. Team registration has begun (see the application on p. 5). The cost for a team is $280 (or $70 per person). You can also purchase mulligan balls and putting string in advance. Sack lunches will be available for all golfers to eat before or take with you on your cart. This is a very fun event and you don’t want to miss out! You don’t have to be an expert golfer either; it is all about supporting the Belgrade Chamber and having a great time in the sunshine! 2012 Board of Directors

Mission Statement “The Belgrade Chamber of Commerce, through the leadership and integrity

of its members, is committed to unite the business community, promote economic growth, and enhance the quality of life.”

Agriculture: The committee’s biggest project of the year – Farm Fair – is set for May 8-10. This educational event will teach 936 fourth-graders the ins and outs of farming and ranching at the Ed Brainard Ranch. The committee also offers “Pitch Fork Fondues” to groups from 50-500 people looking for a unique BBQ. The cost is $12.50 per plate; all profits go to MSU agriculture scholarships. Call the Chamber (388-1616) for information.

Business Promotions: The committee is seeking more spon-sors for the Gas Giveaway, which will be held in conjunction with Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, May 12. Thanks to the following sponsors for their help: Rich’s Flooring, Stockman Bank, Wendy Marquis Art Gallery, Collision Center, First Interstate Bank, Albertsons, Belgrade News, Lee and Dad’s IGA, and Rocky Mountain Supply.

Economic Development: Lots of great things are happening at the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport: new flights, a new Customs office, and increases in travel. Most attendees were optimistic about the summer. Real estate, both commercial and residential, is starting to sell. The attendees discussed how the North Dakota oil boom has even affected this area and that it will be moving across northern Montana to the Cutbank/Shelby area.

Membership Services: Planning for the Golf Scramble is in full swing. Hole sponsors, prize sponsors, and teams are needed for this June 8 event. If your business has no prize to donate, you can buy a gift certificate to another business or give a cash dona-tion and “golf-appropriate” prizes will be purchased. A registra-tion form is shown on p. 5; download forms at http://member. belgradechamber.org/Events/details/2012-golf-scramble. Contact Kim at 388-1616 for more information. Reservations for 2013 “Business After Hours” events are being taken; some months are already taken.

President’s Circle: The committee took part the Cellular One grand opening on April 27. They look for-ward to more grand open-ings this summer.

Tournament: Track season is upon us. The Class A/B State track meet will be held at the Bozeman High School track facility on Memorial Day weekend. Lots of volunteers are need for this event. Please contact Rick Phillips at 924-2554 or [email protected].

Transportation: Nothing to report this month.

* Meeting times and locations are shown on the Calendar (p. 12).

I can’t believe it is already May! I guess because we were so busy the first half of the year it just whizzed by.

Believe it or not, it is time to start planning the 2012 Fall Festi-val, which will be September 28-29 this year. It’s a little later than we like, but the festival has been so successful in conjunc-tion with the high school homecoming that we are willing to take a chance on the weather.

We are looking for volunteers to act as co-chairs for a few of the committees:

Park Activities: There is so much going on in the park that Diane Letendre could really use the help.

Raffle: Deana Crane has been the chair for years by herself and would love to have someone to share the responsibility.

BBQ: Bob and Pauline Hollern do a wonderful job with the BBQ, but it would be nice to have a “couple/husband and wife” or someone who they can train. Then, if they do decide to retire or something happens, we are covered. Of course, it is always nice to have another set of hands for planning and setting up.

Summer is pretty quiet for the regular Chamber committees. Many do not meet over the summer months, so this is a good time to jump into Fall Festival and lend a hand.

Congratulations to the Class of 2012 college and high school

graduates!

By taking an extra look at what the “real” cost savings is for healthy productive employees, we can see how important it is to keep those employees fit and exer-cising regularly!

Corporate wellness programs are on the rise and have become more and more popular with businesses all across the country. Health care costs have been on a steady incline, and employers are trying to find ways to help keep health care affordable for their workers. But many ask, what are the true benefits and costs savings of these kinds of programs?

First, let’s look at how an employee’s lifestyle affects their overall health. A disturbing 40% of U.S. deaths each year are premature and due to unhealthy life-style choices such as tobacco use, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, misuse of alcohol and drugs, and accidents. Other causes may be more circumstantial; for exam-ple, genetic predisposition accounts for 30%, social circumstances (15%), access to quality health care (10%), and environmental exposures (5%). Unhealthy lifestyle is the main factor in the six leading causes of

U.S. deaths: heart disease, cancer, stroke, respiratory diseases, accidents, and diabetes. On average, people with healthier lifestyles live up to 9 years longer.

Employers and employees can participate in health promotion practices to help bend the cost curve and prevent some of the most common chronic illnesses. Many studies show that employees who participate in wellness programs offered by employers are less likely to miss work and are more focused on the job. Well-ness programs also help educate employees on exer-cise, stress relief, nutrition, and health advice. Mon-tana Chamber Choices Health Insurance Program of the Montana Chamber of Commerce supports em-ployee wellness and encourages employers to help keep their employees healthy. This year we are again sponsoring the Montana Worksite Health Promotion Conference. Attend and learn more on the importance and savings of keeping your workforce healthy! The conference is May 2-3 in Helena at the Great North-ern Hotel. For more information, go to http://montanaworksitewellness.org/conference.shtml. Take time in May to promote employee health and fitness.

May Is Employee Health and Fitness Month!

Community Assessment

On March 7-8, a Community Assess-ment Team came to Belgrade and held “listening sessions” with busi-nesses, community groups, city offi-cials, services , and school officials.

Their report is now finished. There are many great suggestions in the report that can help Belgrade be-come more appealing to potential businesses.

The Community Assessment Team will return to Belgrade for a town meeting on May 14 to go over the report and answer questions. The meeting is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Belgrade City Hall. Thank you to all the businesses that took the time to come to the listening sessions.

Customer

Appreciation Day

Saturday, May 12

The Business Promotions Committee is sponsoring Cus-tomer Appreciation Day on May 12. Thank your custom-ers for their patronage by offering prizes, sales, or other activities for that day or the preceding week. Hundreds of people are in town that day because it coincides with Rocky Mountain Supply’s free BBQ.

You can also help sponsor the Gas Giveaway by donating $50. Sponsors will be listed in the main ad in the Bel-grade News, on the posters advertising the event, and on the Chamber website.

Contact the Chamber (388-1616) or e-mail [email protected] for more information. You can also register online or download a registration form at http://member.belgradechamber.org/Events/details/customer-appreciation-2012.
