Mission Statement “The Belgrade Chamber of Commerce, through the leadership and integrity

of its members, is committed to unite the business community, promote economic growth, and enhance the quality of life.”

Agriculture: The Farm Fair committee is continuing to formulate plans for the 2014 Farm Fair to be held on May 6-8. Letters have been sent out to valley teachers. The Ag Appreciation Banquet committee is also formulating sponsorship forms for the 2014 banquet to be held March 21. The entertainment has been secured. The committee will be serving breakfast on Friday, November 15, for the FFA/4-H students attending the John Deere Expo. If anyone would like to help with the breakfast, contact Jay Williamson at [email protected].

Business Promotions: The committee discussed the Festival of Lights, set for December 6. They are hosting a Bingo event where attendees will get stamps from participating businesses. Once their card is complete, they can turn it into any participating business. Businesses will be donating prizes for the winners. See page 5 for the current list of activities.

Economic Development: The committee discussed the state of the economy in the valley. Health care was a major topic. They hosted their quarterly business tour of Johns Manville on Octo-ber 30. Everyone was very impressed with the number of employees and the process for manufacturing foam insulation.

Membership Services: Building Belgrade held their second class, which focused on Belgrade’s youth. After lunch served by the high school Pro Start Class, they heard about high school life from the Student Council President. They then visited Heck/Quaw Elemen-tary (took a third-grade math test), Ridgeview Elementary (observed a kindergarten reading lesson), Belgrade Middle School (observed an eighth-grade math lesson and a busy dismissal), and the Special Event Center for an overview of Montana Common Core Standard and Assessments.

President’s Circle: The committee was very busy in October with three ribbon cuttings: Desert Rose, KCMM Christian Radio, and the Holiday Inn Express (see photos on page 4). Two ribbon cuttings are scheduled for November: Rustic Edge Salon on November 5 and a joint ribbon cutting with the Bozeman Chamber at the Silver Spur Arena on November 14.

Tournament: The committee is hosting the All Class State Vol-leyball Tournament at MSU on November 14-16. Volunteers are needed for ushers, ticket takers, and team hosts; contact the Cham-ber to help. It will be a busy 3 days with Bobcat volleyball and football games and the John Deere Expo also that weekend.

Transportation: The East Belgrade Interchange is starting to take shape. The committee will invite a speaker to the January luncheon to discuss final road placement and design decisions.

*Meeting times and locations are shown on the Calendar (p. 12).

November 2013 Page 7

This is a very stressful time for the businesses who are trying to figure out what to do about health insurance for their employees and themselves. The Belgrade Chamber recently held a Healthcare Seminar facilitated by Rick Lubkeman from the Montana Health Co-op. Rick went through what the “exchange” is all about and how it is supposed to work. He answered a lot of questions, but there is still frustration as there are big changes to come. No business, no matter how small, will be unaffected by the Afford-able Care Act (ACA).

I suggest you don’t take this lightly and get professional help to figure out what is best for your company. Rick suggested sitting down with your accountant, insurance agent, and possibly even a lawyer. No matter what, you can plan on more than an hour to figure out the situation. We were unfortunate to lose a great Chamber benefit by the changes affecting the Chamber Choices insurance program. Although it will continue through December with Blue Cross Blue Shield, after the first of January there will be a new carrier and no membership will be required to be part of this group health insurance plan.

Now more than ever, businesses need to band together and pay attention to the legislative actions at the state and federal levels. Now more than ever, we need to voice our opinions and do our homework on the people we elect to the legislature and Congress. Big changes are coming… be sure you know your facts!
