Troubleshooting the Short Circuit between Eye and Brain

ON APRIL 6 th, Mrs. RamalathaMarimuthu, Chair, Madras IEEE Women inEngineering and Region 10 WIE coordinator gavean invited talk on the topic “Troubleshootingthe short circuit between eye and brain” in theweekly colloquium of Tufts University, Boston,USA. The event was hosted by Dr. KarenPanetta, Professor of Department of ElectricalEngineering, Tufts University.

The speaker began with the explanation

of dyslexia, a reading disorder that persistsdespite good schooling and normal or evenabove-average intelligence. It’s a handicap thataffects 10% of the population. She explainedabout the difficulties faced by the children, thesymptoms which can be used to identify thedisorder and the research that has already goneon identifying and managing dyslexic children. The more researchers learn about dyslexia, themore they realize it’s a flaw not of character butof biology — specifically, the biology of thebrain. Researchers now know that there is aglitch in the neurological wiring of dyslexics thatmakes reading extremely difficult for them.Research also shows that young dyslexicchildren are not so good at pronouncing multi-syllabic words as their peers. Many acutedyslexics suffer from inadequate fine and grossmotor perceptions, imbalance and weak vision.

The speaker then explained about thetools developed by her to address some of the

issues of the dyslexics, like balancing mat whichmakes the child to walk in a straight path.Another tool is a writing aid which senses thepressure the child applies on the pen andmonitors whether it is the correct amount ofpressure and intimates the child.

Computing math shows dependence onfinger counting and other tricks; though thedyslexics know the answers, they cannot do iton paper. They can do arithmetic, but fail wordproblems; cannot grasp algebra or higher math. For this, she has developed a maths learningmodule using Vedic Mathematics which hasproved to be very effective on dyslexics.

The speech was for one hour and thestudents and the teachers present appreciatedthe motive and the ideas displayed to them. The speaker patiently answered all thequestions that arose in the colloquium.

BLUE EYES

INTRODUCTION:

It is possible to create a computer whichcan interact with us as we interact with eachother. It seems to be a fiction, but it will be thelife lead by “BLUE EYES” in the very nearfuture. The basic idea behind this technology isto give the computer the human power. The“BLUE EYES” technology aims at creatingcomputational machines that have perceptualand sensory ability like those of human beings.Blue Eyes uses sensing technology to identifya user’s actions and to extract key information. This information is then analyzed to determinethe user’s physical, emotional, or informationalstate, which in turn can be used to help makethe user more productive by performingexpected actions or by providing expectedinformation. Animal survival depends on highlydeveloped sensory abilities. Likewise, humancognition depends on highly developed abilitiesto perceive, integrate, and interpret visual, auditory, and touch information. Without adoubt, computers would be much morepowerful if they had even a small fraction ofthe perceptual ability of animals or humans.Adding such perceptual abilities to computerswould enable computers and humans to worktogether more as partners. Toward this end, theBlue Eyes aims at creating computationaldevices with the sort of perceptual abilities thatpeople take for granted Blue eyes is beingdeveloped by the team of Poznan Universityof Technology& Microsoft. It makes use of the“blue tooth technology developed by Ericsson.

PARTS OF A BLUE EYE SYSTEM:

The major parts in the Blue eye systemare Data Acquisition Unit and Central SystemUnit. The tasks of the mobile Data AcquisitionUnit are to maintain Bluetooth connections, toget information from the sensor and sending itover the wireless connection, to deliver the alarmmessages sent from the Central System Unit tothe operator and handle personalized ID cards.Central System Unit maintains the other sideof the Bluetooth connection, buffers incomingsensor data, performs on-line data analysis, records the conclusions for further explorationand provides visualization interface

THE HARDWARE:Data Acquisition Unit:

Data Acquisition Unit is a mobile part ofthe Blue eyes system. Its main task is to fetchthe physiological data from the sensor and tosend it to the central system to be processed. To accomplish the task the device must managewireless Bluetooth connections (connectionestablishment, authentication and termination).Personal ID cards and PIN codes provideoperator’s authorization.

Communication with the operator iscarried on using a simple 5-key keyboard, asmall LCD display and a beeper. When anexceptional situation is detected the device usesthem to notify the operator. Voice data istransferred using a small headset, interfaced tothe DAU with standard mini-jack plugs. TheData Acquisition Unit comprises severalhardware modules

Atmel 89C52 microcontroller - systemcore

Bluetooth module (based onROK101008)

HD44780 - small LCD display

24C16 - I2C EEPROM (on a removableID card

MC145483 – 13bit PCM codec

Jazz Multisensor interface

beeper and LED indicators, 6 AA batteriesand voltage level monitor

CENTRAL SYSTEM UNIT:

Central System Unit hardware is thesecond peer of the wireless connection. Thebox contains a Bluetooth module (based onROK101008) and a PCM codec for voice datatransmission. The module is interfaced to a PCusing a parallel, serial and USB cable. The audiodata is accessible through standard mini-jacksockets

To program operator’s personal ID cardswe developed a simple programming device. Theprogrammer is interfaced to a PC using serialand PS/2 (power source) ports. Inside, there isAtmel 89C2051 microcontroller, which handlesUART transmission and I2C EEPROM (IDcard) programming.

THE SOFTWARE:

Blue Eyes software’s main task is to lookafter working operators’ physiologicalcondition. To assure instant reaction on the

operators’ condition change the softwareperforms real time buffering of the incomingdata, real-time physiological data analysis andalarm triggering. The Blue Eyes softwarecomprises several functional modules Systemcore facilitates the transfers flow between othersystem modules (e.g. transfers raw data fromthe Connection Manager to data analyzers, processed data from the data analyzers to GUIcontrols, other data analyzers, data logger etc.).

The System Core fundamental are single-producer-multi-consumer thread safe queues.Any number of consumers can register toreceive the data supplied by a producer. Everysingle consumer can register at any number ofproducers, receiving therefore different typesof data. Naturally, every consumer may be aproducer for other consumers. This approachenables high system scalability – new dataprocessing modules (i.e. filters, data analyzersand loggers) can be easily added by simplyregistering as a costumer.

Connection Manager is responsible formanaging the wireless communication betweenthe mobile Data Acquisition Units and thecentral system. The Connection Managerhandles:

communication with the CSU hardware

searching for new devices in the coveredrange

establishing Bluetooth connections

connection authentication

incoming data buffering

sending alerts

Data Analysis module performs theanalysis of the raw sensor data in order to obtaininformation about the operator’s physiologicalcondition. The separately running Data Analysismodule supervises each of the workingoperators. The module consists of a number ofsmaller analyzers extracting different types ofinformation. Each of the analyzers registers atthe appropriate Operator Manager or anotheranalyzer as a data consumer and, acting as aproducer, provides the results of the analysis. The most important analyzers are:

saccade detector - monitors eyemovements in order to determine the levelof operator’s visual attention

pulse rate analyzer - uses bloodoxygenation signal to compute operator’spulse rate

custom analyzers – recognize other

behaviors than those which are built-inthe system. The new modules are createdusing C4.5 decision tree inductionalgorithm

Visualization module provides a userinterface for the supervisors. It enables them towatch each of the working operator’sphysiological condition along with a previewof selected video source and related soundstream. All the incoming alarm messages areinstantly signaled to the supervisor. TheVisualization module can be set in an off-linemode, where all the data is fetched from thedatabase. Watching all the recordedphysiological parameters, alarms, video andaudio data the supervisor is able to reconstructthe course of the selected operator’s duty. Thephysiological data is presented using a set ofcustom-built GUI controls:

a pie-chart used to present a percentageof time the operator was activelyacquiring the visual information

A VU-meter showing the present valueof a parameter time series displaying ahistory of selected parameters’ value.

BLUE-EYES BENEFITS:

Prevention from dangerous incidentsMinimization of ecological consequencesfinancial loss a threat to a human life BlueEyessystem provides technical means for monitoringand recording human-operator’s physiologicalcondition. The key features of the system are:

visual attention monitoring (eye motilityanalysis)

physiological condition monitoring(pulse rate, blood oxygenation)

operator’s position detection (standing,lying)

wireless data acquisition using Bluetoothtechnology

real-time user-defined alarm triggering

physiological data, operator’s voice andoverall view of the control room recording

recorded data playback Blue Eyessystem can be applied in every workingenvironment requiring permanentoperator’s attention:

at power plant control rooms

at captain bridges

at flight control centers

CONCLUSION:

In future it is possible to create acomputer which can interact with us as weinteract with each other with the use of blueeye technology. It seems to be a fiction, but itwill be the life lead by “BLUE EYES” in thevery near future. Ordinary household devicessuch as televisions, refrigerators, and ovens maybe able to do their jobs when we look at themand speak to them.
