Seminar on Power System DisturbanceMonitoring and Control

A one day seminar was organized on 10th

Feb 2012 on the theme “Power systemdisturbance monitoring and control using timefrequency and machine intelligence technique”.Dr. B. K Panigrahi, Professor, IIT Delhi wasthe key resource person. He started the sessionwith explaining the various power quality issuesand its effects. Then, he added “profit shouldonly be measured by means of social welfaremaximization”. The various factors includedwith power quality are competition, deregulationand restructuring. It was a surprise to many toknow that the power losses are costing us 20billion a year. After a scintillating introduction,he moved on to transformation techniquesrelated to DAS (Data Acquisition System).Transformations separate fundamental andharmonic components. He elaborated on FourierTransforms, Short Time Fourier Transforms andWavelet Transforms. We understood that theresolution was better with a smaller windowsize. The conundrum transformation part waseasy as he made us understand the physicsbehind mathematics.

Emerging wireless standards such as3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project),LTE (Long Term Evolution) and LTEAdvanced present significant challenges forbaseband processing. While LTE-Advancedwill ultimately have a huge impact on themobile networks and the devices that usethem, don’t expect 1 Gbps speeds to suddenlypop on your phones next year. LTE-Advanced won’t come out as a single newnetwork like plain-old LTE did, but rather, inwaves. It’s more like a menu of technologies.Operators will select whatever technology ortechnique that looks tastiest at the time, implement it in their current LTE networks, and when they get hungry for more speed, capacity or efficiency, they will return to theirvendors for another meal. Sure, if you want itto be. 3G, 4G and 5G have all becomemeaningless marketing terms. A 4G networkmust be theoretically capable of supporting adownlink of 1 Gbps in a fixed environment, which will be impossible for most of theworld’s operators to achieve. So the technicaldefinitions are just as useless as the marketingones for distinguishing between the generationsof network technology unless we want toremain in a world of perpetual 3G.

Is LTE-Advanced really 5G?two basic trends in wireless channel design.Wider frequency bands are allocated to cellularcommunications, significantly increasing datarates and computation requirements and thenmuch more aggressive modulation and encodingschemes are used to squeeze maximum spectralefficiency out of that bandwidth. As a result, the operation rates for wireless systems areincreasing much more rapidly than theoperating frequencies of digital silicon, especially for the available power. TheBaseband Engine features an optimizedinstruction set, high memory bandwidth, scalable clustering, and efficient compilersupport with an easy programming model forSIMD vectorization and other DSP functions. This high performance core is also an effectivesolution for multi-standard fixed and mobileDTV broadcast demodulators.

Drivers for LTE Advanced designers

The challenge for LTE-Advanceddesigners is how to increase performance by3X from today’s Category 3 LTE devices, without increasing power dissipation tounacceptable levels. The ConnX BBE32UEBaseband Engine is a high-performance DSPdesigned for use in the next-generationcommunication baseband processors in LTE-Advanced and multi-standard User EquipmentPHY (Layer 1) systems. System redefinitionis needed to scale down clock rates and offloadthe main DSP core. The combination of C-

Fig 1: LTE Advanced

Baseband engines

The wireless subsystem must beefficient in both energy usage and silicon arearequirements. The subsystem must implementall modes of one or more basebandcommunications standard. Existing DSParchitectures cannot meet these demands, andvendors are scrambling to develop new, moreefficient and powerful architectures. The drivefor higher data rates in wireless systems drives

Performance requirements for LTE Advanced

The performance requirements for LTEAdvanced require at least five times moreprocessing power than LTE. The newarchitecture delivers 120 GigaMACsperformance in 28nm high-performanceprocess technology. ConnX BBE64-UE isoptimised for the low power and small arearequirements of LTE Advanced handsets.ConnX BBE64-128 DSP-IP (intellectual-property), the next generation architecture forDSP CORES for SOC (system-on-chip)design extend the BBE (baseband-engine)family to more than 100 billion MAC(multiply/accumulate)-operations-per-secperformance to meet requirements for theemerging LTE (long-term evolution)-Advanced standard. They have rich featuressuch as high-performance “soft bit” vector datatypes and operations including arbitrary fieldinsertion and extraction for complex transmitoperations, resulting in over 250 general 10-bit operations per cycle., Parallel register filesfor 10/20-bit and 40-bit data types for easiercompilation and higher performance at lowerpower, large register files for performance oncomplex code, reduced memory bandwidthrequirements, reduced power and easiercompilation.

Sethu Institute ofTechnology

programmable BBE32UE DSP, with thespecialized DSP task engines for functionssuch as Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) anddigital filters, provides a more flexible solutionthan Register Transfer Level (RTL) approacheswhile consuming less power than generalpurpose DSPs. Innovative, hard-wired signalprocessing data paths may be more efficient, but may not be flexible enough for changingstandards and workloads.
