Discussion Forum
Discussion Forum is a visionary initiativeby the branch to impart latest technology tothe members and keep them updated with thesame. At initial stage, all senior student branchofficers took their turn to teach their newmembers. A wide range of topics of topic werecovered ranging from “issues and challenge to4G” to “cloud computing”. The monthlyupdates from the reliable IEEE spectrummagazine were used often to give insights oftechnological developments in various fields. After its success from the members, they weremade to participate intensively by allowingthem to present on these latest developments. This move was made by the branch as a part ofdevelopment of soft and communication skillsof its members. The vision of giving insight tothe rapid technological development andcreating self awareness and equippingthemselves to the future challenges of itsmembers doesn’t seem to be a myth. DiscussionForum is platform purely created for itsmembers by the senior members. This initiativehas still long way to go to attain its vision. Some of the forum discussions during Jul-Aug2011 include:

Health Awareness and Preventive Measures for Women at Dr NGPIT
The WIE affinity group of Dr. NGP
Institute of Technology organized a camp on
“Health Awareness and Preventive Measures
for Women” on 29th Aug 2011 for the women
students & faculty in the campus. Mrs P.
Pradeepa, WIE staff coordinator warmly
welcomed the gathering. Dr. Thavamani D.
Palaniswamy, Secretary in her presidential
address stressed on the benefits of healthy mind
through a healthy body and the importance of
health conscious for the working women &
students. She introduced Dr. Rupa, Consultant
Radiologist, KMCH, the chief guest.
Dr. Rupa elucidated the high possibility
of cancer among women. She said that while
one percent of women in India are prone to
cancer, compared 30% in US, the mortality rate
in India is much greater than in US. This is
because of the lack of awareness among the
Indian population about cancer and its
preventive measures. She elaborated on the
prominent types of cancer seen in women such
as cervical and breast cancer etc. She briefed
about the self-examination procedure for breast
cancer - a method which can help in diagnosing
and treating cancer at an early stage. When
practiced on a regular basis it can reduce the
mortality rate. She also explained about the
medical procedures such as Mammography,
MRI scans etc. which help in the early diagnosis
of breast cancer. Furthermore she highlighted
the age groups that are most prone to this type
of cancer. She concluded the lecture highlighting
the importance of a healthy diet and healthy
habits in keeping women protected from such
fatal illnesses.
About 300 students & faculty, including
those from Dr. NGP Arts & Science College,

Professor San Murugesan, Director ofBRITE Professional Services, and Adjunct Prof.,
University of Western Sydney, Australiaconducted the workshop. During the workshop,he outlined the current scenario where theworld’s climate heats up and our environmentdeteriorates causing potentially disastrousconsequences. The individuals and organisationsthat use IT and the IT industry have now a newrole to play – helping to create a greener, moresustainable environment.
He highlighted that IT is both a problemand a solution to environmental sustainability. IT affects our environment in many ways; eachstage of a computer’s life – production, use,and disposal presents environmental challenges. So, we need to make IT systems and their usegreener. In addition, we can leverage IT ininnovative ways to reduce environmentalproblems. Green IT, aka green computing, is anumbrella term referring to environmentally
sound IT systems, applications, and practices. There is a growing interest in Green IT as it hasboth economic and environmental imperatives.
In this workshop, participants learntabout the causes and effects of global warmingand environmental degradation, IT’senvironmental impact, what Green IT means, and approaches to greening IT and how IT canbe used to improve environmental sustainability. They were also introduced to a range of topicssuch as computer power management, greensoftware, e-waste, data waste, green computers,eco-labelling of computers, greening of IT andgreening by IT.
