About IEEE-MAS Link: You will be happy to know that Mr. H. R. Mohan, the Chief Editor of the IEEE- MAS Link, is doing a marvelous job in bringing out the comprehensive monthly news bulletin of the IEEE Madras Section, in time, almost for the past 6 years. You will agree with me that even though it is not a full time job for him, it consumes most of his precious time. The bulletin has become a benchmark news letter, covering various events such as: Chairman’s message, Editor’s desk, reports on the events conducted by various chapters, societies, affinity groups, the section membership statistics, details about forthcoming events, box items covering major achievements of the members, details of the financial assistance given to various student branches, technical quiz, uploading the digital version in the web:www.ewh.ieee.org/r10/madras, arranging for posting the hard copy of the bulletin to all the members of the section in time to avail the postage concession, etc.,. Month after month, year after year, he has been doing that job, tirelessly. On behalf of all of you, I take this opportunity to express my sincere admiration and special encomiums for Mr. H. R. Mohan and to his team members. About the Societies & Affinity Groups: You are aware that there are 13 active societies and 2 affinity groups associated with IEEE Madras Section as listed below. I request all the members to encourage other potential colleagues/students to become members of the societies/ affinity groups of their choice. The contact details of the chairpersons of these societies and affinity groups are published in page 11, IEEE-MAS LINK Vol. 8, Issue 3, March 2011. As a cyclic pattern, it is noticed that the matters we receive for publishing in Link keep increasing during the period Feb to Apr due to a large no. of activities being organized by the SBs. We have seen significant raise in the no. of activities carried out by few SBs – possibly, they are trying to compete for the top positions in receiving the most active SB awards. While we have provided the guidelines to submit the reports, articles for publishing in the newsletter, it has been our experience that more than 50% of the matters we receive do not adhere to the guidelines. This makes the editorial process difficult. Due to space constraints we publish only one photo relating to an event unless we report about a major conference or congress. We get multiple photos in large file sizes though it is recommended 1024 pixels for the pictures. Further, they are embedded in document files which increases the document file size significantly and also make the editing of the photos difficult. Also, we strongly recommend the student branch counselors to do a first round of editing before submitting the matter for publication. While doing so, they may take in to account the style being followed in presenting the reports in the earlier newsletters. This will, to a great extend make the job of the editor easy. We appreciate that the guidelines published at http://ieeecs- madras.managedbiz.com/guidelines-matter-for-ieee-mas-link.pdf is followed strictly and the reports are sent by 1 st week of the month.

ROBO-OPUS I - Robotics Workshop at VIT UniversityA tiny tubular electromagnet connected

(via copper wires) to a thin brass strip mountedon a piece of wood represented the pinnacle oftechnology some 100 years ago. Could a manfrom that era have imagined that in the shortspan of a decade mankind would be connectedto the rest of the globe via an instrument halfthe size of his wooden wonder? What lies in thetimes to come- technology wise? There are manycontenders in the race to become the ‘next bigthing’, but none as strong as robots. Robotictechnology- still in infancy- has massivepotential for growth and is quickly changing theway many fields work. Hence it is imperative

for engineers to keep abreast of the changes/developments in this field and have a soundunderstanding of the principles that govern it.

Robosapiens - an Indian firm that specializesin robotic technology and automation conducted a2 day intensive workshop in VIT where they trainedover 70 students- the best of whom were givena wild card entry to the finals of Robo-opus atIT-BHU. All the students were given kits thatcontained all the materials and instrumentsrequired to make a working robot and assistedin assembling these kits by able professionals.

On the first day of the workshop a

seminar was conducted and students were taughtthe basics of robotics and microprocessors. Theseminar started at 9 in the morning and lastedtill 5 in the evening- an exhausting but fruitfulsession. The second day was reserved exclusivelyfor assembling the kit and testing the robotpractically. Teams struggled to put their botstogether for the final competition- that includeda surprise twist. Of the 15 competing teams, the one that emerged triumphant will be sent tothe final round of Robo-opus at IT-BHU. Theworkshop was an overwhelming success andsaw heavy participation.
