Boys and Girls Clubs of Hamilton continued to grow, both internally and externally, in 2018 with new programs, additional service locations, enhanced staffing, and our largest ever budget. Because of the extraordinary commitment and talents of our entire team of staff, Board members, and volunteers, the organization ended the year stronger than ever and well-positioned for continued excellence.

New and returning faces energized our School Age team towards expanded impact and a renewed focus on quality programs and inclusion across our various neighbourhood sites. This included the launch of a new stream of digital literacy programs supported by our new partners at Ryerson University’s Brookfield Institute. We also leveraged our longstanding involvement with the Telling Tales festival to deliver the first two “Tell Your Tale” children’s literacy workshops in the city.

Our service delivery for 6-12 year olds harnessed the tools of the Government of Ontario’s new Middle Years strategy, including the developmental framework, On My Way, and the strategic lens of Gearing Up, both informed by our work at Boys and Girls Clubs. We also invested in significant training for all staff in the areas of equity and access, Safer Spaces, gender-inclusive programming, and working effectively with our LGBTQ participants and partners.

The growing needs of our youth population were supported by the opening of a new dedicated youth space in a storefront property at the Centre on Barton. We also supported the emergence of a new cohort of youth leaders at the NGen Youth Centre through a reimagining of our programs, structures, and staffing as well as better defined mechanisms for youth leadership and voice.

Our Early Years division stewarded the successful launch of the rebranded EarlyON Child and Family Centres as well as the opening of two new sites in Adelaide Hoodless and Prince of Wales schools. Our skilled team of educators used these opportunities to engage a broader cross-section of families with expanded programming for fathers and targeted outreach to young mothers.

This same team simultaneously supported the opening of new licenced before-and-after-school programs in the Parkdale, Viscount Montgomery, Prince of Wales, and Strathcona communities. Our existing Early Learning and Child Care Centres at Queen Mary and the Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club both saw significant investments in completely rebuilt and naturalized outdoor playgrounds. Educators at each of these sites have created rich environments to support well-being, engagement, belonging, and expression for each of our participants.

We built upon our previous investments in our Early Years team with enhanced training for our champions in Physical Literacy in the Early Years and a commitment to increased programming at the Active Start level. More of this and other Early Years programming will now take our participants beyond our doors with two of our staff now certified as Forest and Nature School Practitioners. We are proud to be leaders in this emerging field and have already started to translate these pedagogical principles into practice.

Our continued reputation for excellence has been evident to other partners in the community and brought a number of exciting new opportunities to our growing portfolio of services. Our collaborative work with various stakeholders in Burlington resulted in us assuming the operations of three grassroots programs from Community Development Halton and identified prospects to meet needs in additional underserved Halton neighbourhoods. The Board of Directors of the Hamilton Association for Residential and Recreational Redevelopment Programs also identified amalgamation into the Boys and Girls Club family as a strategy for sustainability and expanded impact. We welcome the proud history of HARRRP to our organization and will benefit greatly from the expertise of HARRRP staff and Board members through the pending merger. Finally, our partners at the City of Hamilton acknowledged our position and reputation in the community in asking us to take on the operations of the McQuesten Seniors program, formerly operated by St. Matthew’s House as well to be one of the founding signatory agencies for the new Our Future Hamilton vision.

This new venture compliments the established seniors programming that we will inherit from HARRRP and provide expanded opportunities for intergenerational programming across multiple neighbourhoods. There are also natural affinities with our existing Adult Day Program which continued to thrive in 2018. New members of our ADP team brought their passion and talents to bear in stimulating participants mentally, socially, physically, and emotionally. Capital funding was also received to facilitate a new kitchen and the more effective delivery of nutritious meals and snacks for participants.

We were also excited to launch the “Kid of Privilege” media campaign illustrating the crucial work our Clubs do to provide young people with opportunities they might not be able to access otherwise. A series of impactful public service announcements highlight our focus on high-quality programs, caring adults, and safe spaces where kids are welcomed, inspired, and supported during critical out-of-school hours. At our Clubs, every kid is a Kid of Privilege!

The positive impact we have had on thousands of children, youth, adults, and families this past year wouldn’t be possible without a team of highly passionate staff and volunteers who demonstrate their commitment every day as they bring their gifts and talents to each critical role. We would like to thank the exceptional members of our Board of Directors and the visionary Board members of HARRRP for truly going above and beyond in 2018 to support the work of staff and the future success of our growing organization. And to the staff and volunteers at all of our program sites who continued to turn challenges into opportunities and create even stronger networks of support and service, please accept our sincerest thanks. You truly are what makes Boys and Girls Clubs of Hamilton a good place to be.

Respectfully,

Jane Allison Glenn Harkness Chair, Board of Directors Executive Director

We are pleased to present the financial information of Hamilton East Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club for the year ended December 31, 2018. This report should be read in conjunction with the financial statements presented. The Club continues to receive stable and healthy financial support from all levels of government and various community partners, including the United Way, the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton East, the Hamilton Community Foundation, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada. The Club’s revenue this year is $5,041,348 which resulted in a surplus in 2018 of $98,215.

In order to increase the levels of programming offered to members and families, Club programs and services continued to grow. This growth was mainly in the areas of Child Care and our Ontario EarlyON Centres. This growth resulted in an increase in staff wages and an overall expense of $4,943,133.

Treasurer's Report for theYear Ending in December 31, 2018

We especially wish to acknowledge the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton East for their loyal and ongoing support; the Club received $95,000 in funding from the Kiwanis Club during calendar year 2018.

The Club ended the year with $1,949,251 in assets, including $202,514 in capital assets as a result of renovations to the games room and creative room, the purchase of new computers for the computer room, and the naturalization of our child care playgrounds at both Ellis and Queen Mary.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all organizations, businesses and individuals who provided their support in 2018, and look forward to another successful year in 2019 together.
