Dessert wines, which also go by the names liqueur wines and

fortified wines, are wines that are higher in alcohol than table wine

and are usually sweet. The secret to the higher alcoholic level is the

addition of brandy which results in a fortified wine with an alcohol

level of around 20% and sometimes higher. There are three popular

wines that fall into the category of fortified wine: Port, Sherry and

    Madeira.

Port wine gets its name from Porto, a city in Portugal where the

wine originated. Incredibly, it is made from about 48 different grape

varieties, mostly red. Ruby Port and Tawny Port are two popular and

affordable styles of Port wine that are made by blending wines from

different years. Thus, a vintage year does not appear on the label.

Ruby Port is aged four years before being marketed while the Tawny

Port is aged longer. Some Tawny Ports are identified as being aged 10,20, 30 or 40 years. Its important to remember that Tawny Port with

an age indicated on its label is superior to one that does not, although

it will be slightly more expensive. As the names imply, the Ruby Port

has a ruby red color and the Tawny Port has a brownish hue.

When Port winemakers experience an exceptional vintage year,

they will declare it officially as a year for wine and produce a Vintage

Port. Only about three times a decade will the growing conditions

good enough to produce this extraordinary wine. Once Vintage Po

wine is made it will get 20-30 years more aging in the bottle to rea

its peak. Only about 1% of all Port wine is of the Vintage Port varie

Another style of Port you will see is called Late-Bottled Vintage

Port (LBV). This is neither a blended-year Port, as with the Ruby o

Tawny types, or an exceptional year Vintage Port, but it does fall

somewhere in between. LBV Port does come from a single, better

than average vintage year and is aged in casks for several years bef

    being bottled.

Madiera wine comes from the Portuguese island of Madeira. W

Madiera wine, the addition of brandy may come during or after

fermentation, depending on the degree of sweetness desired. Madhas a unique manufacture. It undergoes a process of heating and

cooling which results in a very durable wine. It has been pre-

oxidized and thus will survive poor storage conditions that would

normally make other wines go bad. Madiera styles, in order from

light and dry to fuller and sweet, are labeled Sercial, Verdelho, Bua

    and Malmsey.

Sherry is from Spain and is one of that countrys notable wines

Adding grape brandy after the original wine has fully fermented

    increases Sherrys alcohol content.

Sherry is made in either a light, dry style, called Fino Sherry, or

richer, heavier style known as Oloroso Sherry. The fino style includ

Manzanilla and Amontillado Sherries which are differentiated by th

color and flavor. The Amontillado is deeper amber with a nuttier ta

Some Sherry is sweet, the sweetness coming from the addition

sweet grape concentrate or by blending with sweet grapes. These

styles are known as Medium, Pale Cream, Cream, Brown, East Ind

Pedro Ximnez and Moscatel Sherry. Be sure to look for authentic

Sherry from Spain, not from other countries that make an imitatio

    Sherry.

an opportunity to showcase the quality of its wines and its vision as

an organization to nearly 1,000 attendees throughout the weekend,

nearly twice the expected weekend attendance.

The Paso Robles AVA, 35 miles wide and 25 miles long, consists of

614,000 total acres. 32,573.99 acres are planted to premium wine

We asked customers from our sisterrestaurant, Roberts, what type of cuisine they wanted to see inPaso, says Estrella co-owner, Brenda Clouston. There was anoverwhelming request for a Spanish-inspired food. We took that

concept and expanded it to include a range of Latin cuisine. Theresponse has been very positive.Estrellas bold dcor matches the restaurants lively cuisine with

warm, orange-toned walls, exposed brick, custom-made barinlayed with snakeskin and hand-made chairs tastefully coveredin cowhide. We wanted both locals and out-of-town guests tofeel comfortable here, says Clouston. We designed the dcorwith the cuisine in mind, but we also wanted to add a touch ofPaso.

    BY MICHAEL CERVIN

Firestone Vineyard was one of the first commercial estate vineyards

planted in Santa Barbara and true to that progressive thinking, they

continue to look forward with new wines, new markets and a

commitment to making the best wines in Santa Barbara County. The

Firestone name is probably familiar to most people; they were the family

    that created Firestone tires.

Today winemaker Paul Warson, who came on board at Firestone after 14 years makin

wine in the Napa Valley, is putting his own stamp on Firestones aromatic white wines an

their traditional Bordeaux reds. Warson oversees over 400 acres of grapevines which

translates to about 100,000 cases of wine each year, making them a major player in Sant

Barbara County. Its been a whirlwind three-and-a-half years since I took over the

winemaking here at Firestone Vineyards, Warson says. It seems that we need to move

faster and faster to stay in the same place, or keep up with the latest accomplishments fo

that matter. We have received some terrific accolades from the media and press in the las

year which has gone a long way in expanding Firestone into new markets.

And Firestone is also one of the few wineries in the area who offer complimentary

    public tours daily at 11:15 a.m., 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. After the 30-minute in-depth tour y

can picnic outside on the verdant lawns and see for yourself the vineyards which have b

planted on a series of mesas, which have gravelly sub-soils, perfect for keeping the vines

healthy and well-drained. The vineyards sites are ideally oriented to capture the sun and

breezes for perfect exposure to maximize the grape flavors. At the

winery things are busier than ever, says Warson. Last year saw the

inaugural release of Proximity 26, our flagship red wine. In the next

few weeks Paul says he will be bottling the 2010 vintage of Proximity

26, and a new addition to the Firestone family, Proximity 26

Cabernet Sauvignon. As usual our wine club releases continue to

highlight our tasting room only wines, notably our Reserve

Chardonnay, Clone 174 Syrah and our Cabernet Franc, Warson

    adds.

So if youre a newbie wine lover or a confident connoisseur youwill find wines that are compatible with your personal tastes. The

spacious tasting room is replete with soft wood tones, and tiled

floors, reminiscent of a ranch house with views out to one of their

vineyards. The tasting room also offers a plethora of gift items in

addition to wine. Their bottle prices range from $15 to $60, with a

    vast majority being under $25.

Their Firestone Concert Series, which are normally held every

Friday starting in May until the end of September 2013, and are the

ideal way to spend clear warm summer nights in Santa Barbara wine

country under the stars with good tunes and great friends. The

concerts run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and are free to attend and all thecurrent releases of Firestone wine are available for purchase

throughout the event. Big Toms BBQ is on hand with tri-tip

sandwiches, pulled pork sandwiches, burritos, tacos and more so

you wont go hungry. But all the busyness isnt reserved for the

winery only. We are currently redeveloping 16 acres of Cabernet

Sauvignon and a little bit of Malbec, says Warson.

This holds promise for the next time you visit.

Firestone Vineyard is located at 5017 Zaca Station Rd. They are

    open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Contact Firestone at (805)

    BRETTE ANN WOMACK

Vina Robles is the product of passion

turned to business, like so many wonderful

entities on our beloved Central Coast. Hans

Nef, along with business partner, Hans R.Michel, founded Vina Robles in 1996. Since

then, the duo has planted four estate

vineyards and opened one of Paso Robles

    most renowned hospitality centers. Michel,

managing partner, has kept a clear vision

while developing Vina Robles - premium

wines served with first-class hospitality. He

    has undoubtedly achieved this goal.

The Vina Robles portfolio of wine consists

of mostly estate grown varieties including

Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon andPetite Sirah, with several elegant blends in

between. The WHITE4 is a deliciously crisp

blend of Viogner, Verdelho, Vermentino and

Sauvignon Blanc; its a well-decorated fresh

white wine achieving 91 points from Wine

Enthusiast. Its counterpart, the RED4 is an

equally easy drinking red blend, with

enough backbone to gawk at the $17 price

point. Not to be outdone, the RED4 was

named Editors Choice in Wine Enthusiast.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a

distinct and hearty wine. In true Paso form,

it is a bit more medium bodied than a

Napa version and at $24 per bottle, can

accompany any occasion. A flagship grape at

the Hospitality Center is Petite Sirah, which

has quite the following. The 2009 Petite

Sirah Estate is surprisingly balanced for thisnormally robust variety. While these wines

are available for purchase through their

website and at select locations throughout

the country, the best way to experience them

is at the Vina Robles Hospitality Center.

On the south side of Highway 46 East, on

Mill Road, stands the illustrious, yet refined,

    Hospitality Center. The entrance includes

    ample parking, native landscaping and

majestic oak trees. A sitting area surrounding

a fountain exists as a peaceful area to enjoy

wines, and is also the pet friendly section

of the center. Upon entering the glass doors,

guests are welcomed by a friendly concierge

who is happy to share information and guide

the way to the tasting room. Making it past

the gift selection, which includes artisanal

items like Vina Robles olive oil and gourmet

salts, can prove tricky! But the reward is an

expansive wine list and several options for

unique tasting experiences. The tasting room

    is open from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. daily

    and offers several options from

complimentary tastings to a focused PetiteSirah tasting for $12. The Center also offer

Gourmet Lunch and Tasting, a Private Sit

Down Wine and Cheese Experience, and

    Petite Sirah and Chocolate Experience.

Reservations for these are requested for th

    best service, but not required.

As if stellar wines and exceptional

    hospitality experiences werent enough, V

Robles announced the lineup of acts set to

perform at their Amphitheatre for Summe

2013. With artists like YES, Bonnie Raitt,

Ziggy Marley and Peter Frampton there is

show for every ear. Concert goers can

choose from VIP tickets to lawn seating an

will be offered a grand selection of food an

    beverages.

Trail, on the map in 2004.

    Following the picturesque winding

    roads of Tepesquet and Foxen

Canyon will lead you to world-

class wineries by way of sprawling

vineyards and rolling hills. In themore northern region of the

    appellation, Chardonnay and Pinot

Noir reign due to the maritime

    climate. This ensures a long

    temperate growing season which

    the Burgundian varietals crave. In

the southern region of the appella-

tion, the trail moves a bit east

resulting in hotter days and coolernights. Bordeaux and Rhone vari-

eties flourish in this more extreme

    climate. The wineries in this

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY | WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH JUNE 20

After a decade of wine, food and music, the California Wine

Festival is celebrating their anniversary with three days of wine

events, scheduled for July 18-20, in their home base - Santa Barbara.

Over the years, weve taken the California Wine Festivals from

San Diego to Monterey, Director Don Fritzen said. Santa Barbara iswhere we started and weve always enjoyed tremendous support

here. Organizers are expecting a wide variety of wineries from every

wine region in California to pour at the prestigious three days of

events, plus regional microbreweries, and have added new features

each year. This year, were adding a special Cabernet Clinic and

Tasting and lots of great new wineries just coming online from

around the state. Were very excited about the great chefs we attract

from local and regional restaurants and gourmet food purveyors from

around the country, Fritzen said. Of course, live musical

entertainment has been lined up at all three events to provide an

exciting soundtrack to this outdoor extravaganza.

Emily Kaufmann, the growing companys Vice President of Festival

Operations agrees with Fritzens vision of a bright future, Our

customers are going to love the new events this year. Our new

Cabernet Clinic and Tasting should sell out quickly and were adding

new wineries from around the state every day for our other events.

Our brand has stood the test of time, and weve always maintained

the highest standard of wine, food and fun entertainment, giving our

    guests more for their dollar.

Elite wineries, gourmet food manufacturers, top restaurants, and

especially event sponsors recognize the value they receive from

marketing to CWFs high profile clientele in an environment of

prestigious wines, foods and lots of sun and fun. Kaufmann

concluded, Tickets are going on sale sooner than ever before this

year as demand seems to continue to rise for California Wine

Festivals blend of quality wines and gourmet foods, presented in aone-of-a-kind California setting. Better buy early and take advant

of our early bird prices, as we expect to sell out again, Kaufmann

    warned!
