Sulfites are the reason for mandatory label warnings on wine

bottles because a small percentage of the US population, less than one

percent, suffer an allergic reaction to sulfites, such as sneezing or

coughing. About ten percent of these sufferers have a more serious

reaction, such as shortness of breath.

However, people who get headaches from wine should not

automatically blame the sulfites. In the majority of cases the cause is

probably something else, such as histamines in the wine. Some

people take an antihistamine in advance of drinking wine in order to

prevent getting a reaction from the histamines in the wine. Needless

to say, the causes of allergic reactions of any kind are difficult to pin

down without a doctors assistance and if you suffer any ailment as

result of drinking wine, you should consult with a doctor. If you have a wine allergy you can try narrowing down the caus

by first sampling wines made from organically grown grapes, such Bonterra made by Fetzer, or Sanford from Santa Barbara County, among many others. These wines are made from grapes that aregrown without the use of synthetic chemicals, like pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. If no relief comes from drinking wine froorganically grown grapes, the next step is to try a 100% organic winwhich contains a minimal amount of sulfites that occur naturally inproduction, and has no sulfites added. These wines are commonlyfound in natural food grocery stores.

To be sure, every wine, organic or not, contains some sulfites

because sulfites are produced naturally in the process of winemakinIf the total sulfite content is 10 parts per million or higher, howeverthe government requires a warning label. Winemakers add moresulfites because they help to preserve the quality of the wine for lonterm shelf life. Therefore, wines that contain no added sulfites shoube consumed while the wine is young.

I know I wondered as I drove past, so I am positive you have, too.Why do some vineyards have nothing between the rows while others

have every other or even every row filled with spiky and flowery

green, yellow, red and even brown plants? Believe it or not, you can

tell a lotnot just about the weather but about the vineyard

management philosophyjust by looking between the rows of vines

rather than at them as is usually the case.

Cover crops matter because they affect the soil health the vines are

growing within and the irrigation levels of that soil. They have a huge

impact on erosion control, which is vital in wet winter months on

vine-dormant hillsides. Equally, in the drier times, cover crops help

with dust control, which also means pest control and encouragement

of beneficial bugs. And depending on the kind of crops chosen and

the microclimates proclivity to frost, cover crops can help to protect

    vines from inclimate weather damage.

The reasons cover crops are so important are connected to what

vines dont do: move once in place, so everything around them

becomes really important. Unlike annual row crops, its four years

before vines start to give commercial production levels, and its often

two decades or more between replantingsif at all as there areempirical connections between older vines and great wines. In tha

context, the mutability of cover crops becomes apparent, necessary

    and prudent, no?

Here are just some of the list of decisions which inform cover-

cropping: tilling the land initially is pretty much a given, but some

decide not to physically disturb the soil on flat ground so as to

maintain soil vitality while others till annually or more frequently i

order to put amendments, including the cover crops themselves,

more directly into the soil adjacent to the vines. Hillside vineyards

present other considerations, including erosion control provided bthe appropriate plants. Then theres the issue of using annuals or

perennials for your between-row plantings, with the obvious

difference being costs and labor, but this also correllates to another

decision: whether to use different cover crops each year, allowing a

cycling through of amendments, or to use a mix of crops year after

    year.

Thats not all by a longshot. Given the impact on soil irrigation

levels, you will see a variety of stripping patterns in the vineyards o

wine country, which reveals a lot about the years weather to date to

the discerning eye. Is it early but the cover crops are already gone? dry winter with no rain in sight, so nothing is allowed to compete

with vine irrigation. Already late spring and the vineyards still look

abundant with all sorts of grasses, clovers and mustards? A very we

year with the cover crops still above ground to help pull water out

the soil. Some rows mown or tilled in early spring? Someones

making adjustments to soil water levels in different areas of the

vineyard, responding in a very immediate way to what the weather

    gives and takes away.

Its a lot to think about, no? The next time you drive by or get to

go into a vineyard, not only will you now know what youre seeingyoull know why its there, and when you then taste the wines from

that vineyard, youll have a bit of insight into why its so much easi

to be a California winemaker these days: so much of the heavy

workin the vineyard and in the headis already done long befo

we see the resulting grapes. Enjoy!

Andrew Murray fell in love with the classic Rhne varieties, specifically Syrah and

Viognier, in the late 1980s as he traveled through Frances Rhne Valley. At the time he

was enrolled at UC Berkeley studying paleontology, but sampling the wines in France

there was a shift in his thinking. Capitalizing on this newfound enthusiasm for wine, he

decided to do an internship in Australia at a winery, focusing on the production of Shira

When Andrew returned to the U.S., he earned himself a bachelors degree in viticulture

and enology from UC Davis, and then founded his eponymous Santa Ynez winery and

vineyard, dedicated exclusively to his favored Rhne-style wines. Today, Andrew Murra

Vineyards is synonymous with some of the states premier Rhne wines, from sell-out

vineyard designated Syrahs to wildly popular blends!

Please stop by their tasting room when you are traveling through the Los Olivos wine

country. They were just voted the Best Tasting Room in the Valley for 2012, an honor th

they are justifiably proud of! Their recently remodeled room is modern, sleek and clean

with white furniture and stainless steel countertops on the tasting bar. It is truly a

refreshing contrast to many of the tasting rooms in the area. There are roughly 10

different wines to sample and a couple of very affordable tasting options. Their staff is

very friendly and wine knowledgeable, which allows for lots of convivial conversation a

a bit of wine education for the more curious visitors. There are several new wine releases

Releasing shortly will be their white blend of Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, known

    new vineyard in Santa Maria.

When you visit them, make sure you check out Andrews new range of wines, This

is E11even, a nod to a classic rock n roll movie from the 80s. This trio of new wines

takes Andrew out of his Rhne comfort zone and into some fun new territory. The

highlight is a deliciously balanced Pinot Noir, from a single vineyard in Santa Maria.

There is also a red Cabernet blend, irreverently named Big Bottom and a deliciously

crisp white blend simply named, Unplugged. All three of the wines are absolutely

yummy, fun and affordable, at only $16/bottle. For a limited time, this trio is available

to taste in its own signature glass for $5.

For a more intimate experience, their winery, at 5095 Zaca Station Road, Los

    CHAMISAL VINEYARDS

A 40 Year CelebrationBY JEMMA WILSONTo commemorate their historic 40 years in Edna Valley, Chamisal Vineyards will be

hosting a big celebration this July. In addition to celebrating their 40th anniversary, they

are releasing a highly anticipated wine, 40 years in the making. Chamisal Vineyards is

producing a special Anniversary Chardonnay less than 250 cases of Chardonnay comi

from the original Chardonnay vines on the property. This special wine will first be releas

to the wine club, then later to the public. These wines will feature the original Chamisa

label that the winery first released in 1973. This is one event that you shouldnt miss!

We are so excited and proud to be turning 40. What better way to celebrate than wi

a summer birthday party? said Andrea Chan, Chamisals Director of Consumer Sales.

Were going big for this commemoration and hope lots of people come out to show the

    support.

The festivities will be held on Saturday, July 13, at Chamisals winery, where guests w

be treated to live music, food and most importantly, good wines. Settled amongst the

vineyard, this outdoor celebration will be the perfect summer afternoon gathering for

friends and fun! Tickets will be sold in a few months; in the meantime, you can send an

email to [email protected] and let the Chamisal team know youd lik

to be added to their RSVP list. The friendly staff of Chamisal is all about having a good

    Andrea Chan said.

Chamisal Vineyards was founded in the spring of 1973 by

Norman Goss, who was the first to plant vines in Edna Valley. Goss

named the property after Chamise, a native white-flowered shrub

that thrives on this dry, rocky terrain. After Goss sold Chamisal in

1994, the property was renamed Domaine Alfred, up until 2008

when Crimson Wine Group purchased the estate and returned it to

its original name. Chamisal Vineyards is a staple in the Edna Valley

and the history is as rich as its wines.

Ever since its opening in the mid-1980s, the winery has built an enthusiastic fan base and earned

praise from the media for its bold reds, complex whites and luscious dessert wines.

The winery takes its name from the Greek goddess of dawn. Myth has it that Eos opened the gat

was cursed by Aphrodite for having an affair with Ares. Her punishment was an insatiable appetite young men.

Since its purchase in 2010 by Bill Foley, Eos has undergone a number of changes to improve wi

quality, upgrade brand image and enhance visitor experience. Recent and future bottlings feature a

new label design that captures the essence of the brands namesake and the authenticity of the wine

The wine club will be revamped in the coming months to provide more options and access to

wines that arent available elsewhere. Some of the exclusive, limited-production wines that will be

available to members include proprietary and single-vineyard bottlings of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah an

    Chardonnay.

The tasting room, located at the corner of Airport Road and Highway 46 East, is one of the most

enjoyable stops for wine lovers in the Paso Robles region. Laid back and casual, it is the perfect pla

Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse has been a favorite place for localsand visitors for more than 50 years, but their history dates evenfurther back.

Sitting on top of natural sulfur springs, the El Paso de RoblesHotel was opened in 1891. Built in the Victorian style, the hotelstood as a fortress in the small town of Paso Robles and was thedestination of the day. But, the golden era of the El Paso de

Robles Hotel and Hot Springs came to an end after a major fire in1940 burned down everything except the Grand Ballroom.

The Paso Robles Inn was reopened in 1942 as a modernbungalow-style hotel with surrounding gardens. While the inn

was rich in Paso history, it did not maintain its landmark statusuntil the Martin family bought the property in 1999 and restoredit to its original beauty, including the original Grand Ballroom.Despite losing one building in the 2003 earthquake, the propertycurrently offers 30 deluxe spa hotel rooms and six two-bedroom

suites, all with mineral spring tubs in the rooms. With an outdoor patio and fire-pit tables overlooking the

gardens, Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse, which was remodeled lastfall, is a classic steakhouse with a modern twist. Offering a

diverse menu, the restaurant has access to great resources,

including seafood, produce from the Santa Maria Valley and othartisan products. The chefs regularly go to the farmers marketbuy ingredients for the recently revised family-friendly menuwhich offers more options for the budget-conscious visitor.Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, some of the popular disheare the halibut soft tacos, the pulled pork sandwich and the SanMaria-style BBQ. The wine list features an extensive selection Central Coast wines. In partnership with Tobin James Winery, they feature a Westside Zinfandel which is served directly fromstainless steel tanks into a decanter.

Check out Prime Rib Wednesday where you can get a 10-ozprime rib with potato of choice and mixed green salad for $19.9or a prime rib sandwich and potato for $12.95. HALTER RANCHSpring Wines Are ReadyIntroducing Tempranillo

Spains premier variety is known to thrive on the west side of Paso Robles. In 2009 Halter Ranc

added 2.1 acres of Tempranillo to the list of many varieties grown in the vineyard. 2011 marked t

first harvest of Tempranillo as well as the first vintage at Halter Ranch for Winemaker, Kevin Sass.

The Tempranillo is beautifully balanced, with a ripe, lush mouthfeel. Redolent of plums, ripe figs

and white pepper, it has a long, persistent finish. Kevin crafted a scant 100 cases of this wine that

he has designated worthy of their silver reserve label. This wine will be first available to Halter

Ranch Wine Club members and any that remains after this offering will be available in the tasting

    room. $50, $40 Wine Club, (750 ml).

    A Very Popular Pink

If you are looking for a delicious, refreshing and lower alcohol wine you will like the 2012

Halter Ranch Ros. This shift toward lower alcohol and higher acid in wine is intentional.

Winemaker Kevin Sass blends the Rhne White Picpoul Blanc into the traditionally Grenache-

based blend. We have found the wine maintains its delicious bright red fruit character quite wel

while the bracing acidity provided by Picpoul Blanc makes it even more delectable with food, sa

Sass. The 2012 vintage is composed of 68% Grenache, 15% Mourvdre, 12% Picpoul Blanc and

5% Syrah. Immediately the nose is bright and bursting with red fruit in the cranberry, raspberry

and strawberry spectrum. On the palate the texture is light but mouth filling with that thirst

quenching quality so desirable in Ros. Acidity is present but not overwhelming. As the wine

opens, notes of passion fruit, guava, grapefruit and sour cherry begin to emerge. A delightful

cranberry grapefruit zip swoops in on the finish leaving the palate fresh and awaiting the next sipDont hesitate to try this wine as the Halter Ranch Ros sells out early every year. $19, $15.20 Win

    Club, (750 ml).

    A Not-So-Everyday Red

The Red Table Wine, Synthesis blends the elegance and complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon wit

the rich, spicy ripeness of Syrah. The 2011 Synthesis already seems like the cool, collected older

sibling of its predecessor. Fruit forward with an underlying dark, meaty character, the 2011

absolutely screams to be drunk, paired or unpaired. The wine has 3-5 years of life in it if cellaring

your game, but why wait? Expect dark plummy fruit, some slight oak influence, an impressively

full mouthfeel, and peppery spice from the 2011 Synthesis. This wine is available at the Halter

Ranch Tasting Room. It is well worth the drive. $20, $16 Wine Club, (750 ml).

    J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines has been instrumental in putting

Monterey County Chardonnay and Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

on the wine world map. As part of the winerys acclaimed J. Lohr

Estates tier, wines such as the J. Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay

and Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon have become benchmarks for

their respective regions, showing wine lovers what can be achieved

with these varieties on Californias Central Coast. Beginning with the

2009 vintage, the winery began making the same statement with

Monterey County Pinot Noir, when it produced its inaugural J. Lohr

    Estates Falcon's Perch Pinot Noir.

From the start, Falcons Perch followed in the footsteps of the

other great J. Lohr Estates wines, offering a profound expression of a

grape perfectly suited to its growing area. We are aware that J. Lohr

Estates isnt just representing J. Lohr, its representing the regions welove, says Jeff Meier, J. Lohrs longtime director of winemaking. We

take this very seriously. Thats why we spent more than a decade

working with Pinot Noir before we unveiled Falcon's Perch. We

planted vineyards, created a whole winery-within-a-winery to work

in even smaller lots, and made countless trial Pinots before we got to

a place where we felt the wine was what we wanted it to be.

There are many reasons why, vintage after vintage, J. Lohr is able

to achieve remarkable levels of quality. The steady hand of Jeff Meier

is one of the biggest. Jeff joined J. Lohr in 1984. Three years later, the

winery produced its first J. Lohr Estates wine. Since then, Jeff has

helped to oversee the creation of every single J. Lohr Estates offering,

bringing an unmatched level of continuity and knowledge to the

    process.

While extensive work goes into creating each J. Lohr Estates wine,

this work is always ongoing. Jerry [Lohr] doesnt believe in resting

on his laurels, adds Jeff. Hes constantly challenging us to bring out

all the flavor we can in the wines. Most of this work occurs in J.

Lohrs estate vineyards, through the addition of new varietals, clones

    and rootstocks.

While the majority of the Pinot Noir for the 2011 Falcons Perch

comes from J. Lohrs estate vineyards in the Arroyo Seco appellation,

approximately 15% comes from vineyards J. Lohr partnered to

develop in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Overall, J. Lohr has more than1,300 acres of vines in its near-legendary Monterey County estate

program. Everything about our vineyards has been meticulously

thought out and tested, says Jeff. Before we ever planted our first

Pinot Noir vine, we did trial wines using every clone under

consideration. The climate of these vineyards is heavily influenced

by Monterey Bay, and the bays two-mile-deep Blue Grand Canyon of

cold water, which creates an upwelling current that maintains very

    cool temperatures all year round.

According to J. Lohr Red Winemaker Steve Peck, the 2011 J. Lohr

Estates Falcons Perch Pinot Noir represents a stylistic evolution. The

2011 is a richer, darker and more velvety expression of Monterey

County Pinot Noir. These qualities were underscored by the

coolness of the 2011 vintage, and the low Pinot Noir yields it

producedonly 2.5 tons per acre! While all of this has resulted in

great depth and concentration, there is also a fresh, clean acidity th

makes the 2011 vintage a fantastic food wine. Pinot is one of the

most versatile food wines. Our 2011 Falcons Perch has lovely cher

preserve, violet and crme brle notes that make it sensational wi

everything from pork to salmon to seared tuna. J. Lohr Vineyards

Wines is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and is located at 6169

Airport Rd, Paso Robles, CA. For information about J. Lohr Vineya

Executive Director of the Association. We are thrilled to return to

our roots, which are also the historic roots of this community.

What started as a small food and wine event targeting the local

population in order to raise enough funds to print a map showing

The Earth Day Food & Wine Festival has already established itself

as one of the premiere events celebrating local food, and this year,

were raising the bar even further by highlighting the gluten free fare

that our food folks are fashioning!

Theres often quite a bit of communication at festivals betweenattendees trying to avoid gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, rye

and triticale). Whether theyre trying to avoid gluten themselves or

have friends who are, youll hear people buzzing intel to each other

like that booth is serving on a corn chip instead of a pita chip, or

that soup was thickened with cashews instead of flour, or this

marinade doesnt have any soy sauce in it. Yes, soy sauce check the

bottle in your pantry; odds are itll have wheat in it.

At this years Earth Day Food & Wine Festival, the ever-growing

list of gluten-free options already includes yummy food from AJ

Soups, Negranti Dairy, Carriage Vineyards (salad), BeeWench Farm

(spinach salad), Leo Leo Gelato, Natures Touch, Fig Good Food,

SeaVenture Hotel, Gardens of Avila, the General Store and bakerMaurica Zimmerman.

For Chef Casey Walcott of the SeaVenture, preparing a gluten free

offering for the event was a conscious choice because over the last

couple years I have noticed a large increase of people in need of

gluten free choices when it comes to dining. When I think of the

Earth Day event, I think health, sustainability, community, and

being in this together, so I keep that gluten free idea in mind when

    creating a dish.

Arriving at gluten free from an entirely different perspective is CRobert Trester from Gardens of Avila, wholl be preparing roasted

baby beets with toasted buckwheat (not related to wheat, btw). His

whole approach to food is to take great local ingredients and prep

them in a way that celebrates them, without covering up or muddl

flavors This dish was just a natural progression of that taking

the beets and letting them speak, and enhancing the flavors with th

accompanying ingredients. It wasnt necessarily thought out or

conceived as a gluten-free dish, it just naturally progressed that wa

In the coming weeks, well be sharing more about the efforts of

our Earth Day Food & Wine Festival Food Artisans to provide glut

free fare. Until then, check some more of those labels in your pantr

Youll realize what a sneaky little thing were dealing with even asubiquitous an ingredient as hydrolyzed vegetable protein is often

manufactured with grains or products containing gluten.

with his extensive background of working at of Duckhorn Winery and Lewis Cellars, Jada

to one to three tons per acre which intensifies the grapes color, flavor and aromatics and the

As a winemaker, Kenneth Joey Gummeres resume is extensive

including several years making wine at Babcock Winery & VineyarSanta Barbara Winery, Lafond Winery & Vineyards, and co-founde

Kenneth-Crawford. But in 2006, when Joey and his wife Sara foun

out that a close friend had brain cancer, he decided to put his

winemaking skills to even greater use creating a Grenache the

proceeds of which were donated to their friend and her family as w

as to brain tumor research. At that moment, Transcendence Winery

was born as Joey and Sara realized they had found a way to combin

    their lifes passions.

My dream has always been to make great wine, and my wife

[Sara] wanted to do meaningful humanitarian work both in the

community and throughout the world, said Joey. When we were

married, we made a promise to support these dreams in our vows.

Since that 2006 vintage of Grenache, Transcendence Winery ha

grown from the Gummeres shared belief that wine has the potentia

to make a meaningful difference in peoples lives. Transcendence

Winerys philanthropic endeavors support the efforts of several non

profits by donating a minimum of 10% of their sales and an

additional 10% of their annual wine production to these worthwhi

    causes.

We try to make wines that make a difference, said Joey. Of

course Transcendence Winerys success does not come solely from

good intentions. Joey carefully selects vineyards to partner with,

paying great attention to detail throughout the winemaking procesAll of the wines are crafted by hand, in order to emphasize the

quality and provenance of the fruit.

Transcendence Winery currently boasts a very hand-crafted

integrity to their annual production of around 1,000 cases. They

strive to create limited quantities of cool-climate wines with grapes

from highly acclaimed vineyards including Syrah from Ballard

Canyon, and Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from several vineyards in

the Santa Rita Hills including Lafond, Zotovich and La Encantada.

Transcendence is located at 313 North F Street, Lompoc. For

    more information, call (805) 689-5258.

Centrally located at 1659 Copenhagen Drive in Solvang is the

Lions Peak Vineyards tasting room. Inside the thatched roof shop,

one finds a multicultural array of art, pottery, ethnic wood carvings,

painted glassware wine accessories and more. Artistically labeled

bottles, however, reveal handcrafted, award-winning wines sourced

from a 120-acre San Miguel vineyard estate located in North San Luis

Obispo County. To date, winnings from four major California wine

competitions boast a lions share of 24 medals.

Im about to bottle 2010 reds, says winemaker Jennifer Soni,

who earned the distinction of Certified Sommelier last May. Were

bringing back Merlot in the character of great Bordeaux varietals in

the traditional Old World style. Our Bon Courage is outstanding.

Weve blended 63 percent Merlot, 22 percent Cabernet Sauvignon

and 15 percent Cabernet Franc, using French oak. One hundred

cases will be released before fall. Wine Club members will receivefirst-come, first-served privileges. Other fans of Lions Peak may

reserve wines also if they hurry.

Lions Peaks 2010 Sister Lionness blends 42 percent Cabernet

Sauvignon, 41 percent Merlot and 19 percent Cabernet Franc. This

vintage and a new Zinfandel Port just might fly out the door, not

unlike Jennifers BFF blend, but will soon return.

An art and music lover, Jennifer enjoys focusing on gathering

friends, near and far. Live classical guitar music is featured in the

tasting room on alternate Saturdays and Sundays. A Wednesday ge

together is also in the works to enable a midweek respite with chee

chocolate and community to enhance a glass. Wine is an art, says

Jennifer. What relaxing opportunities these are for those interested

conversing about wine while listening to good music.
