    According to American Gold Medal

Wines, 2006 Edition, Eberle Winery is a top-

ten gold medal award winning winery in the

United States. Thats just one of a long list of

accolades to grace this Paso Robles institu-

tion, which was founded by Gary Eberle in

1979. Now considered by many as a pioneer

of Paso Robles the fastest growing wine

region in the state Eberle lives and breathes

to promote Paso Robles and the wines that

    come from this land.

When I first came here in 1973 with my

professors from UC Davis, he says, I was

told that Paso Robles would be the next great

wine region in California. Now, people ask if

Im surprised to see the boom in winemakingin the area. The truth is, I thought it would

happen a long time ago. But Im happy that

winemakers today are proving my professors

    right.

And while Eberle believes that consistent

quality in winemaking is important, he feels

his biggest job is to promote Paso Robles on a

national and international basis. Only now,

34 years after first arriving to the area, doe

feel the region is truly becoming recogni

currently earning more accolades thanever and Gary is happy to serve as

quality control. (He turned over the

winemaking reins at his 30,000 case/year

winery in 1997.) When it comes to

Eberle wines, youll find them all aged in oak barrels in 17,000 square

For Eberle, it just goes to show that a dream can be a powerful

thing. And after more than 30 years, his dream has always remained

the same to produce some of the best wine California has to offer

and have a great time doing it!

WINERY FEATURE WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

    10

    by Mark Storer

The sound of machinery and men

    working permeates the weekday

    atmosphere around the Grey Wolf

    winery. Tractors, backhoes and pounding

hammers are a stark contrast to the rolling

    green vineyards that steep themselves

beneath age-old oak trees standing sentinel

above all. Overseeing the chaos, I found Joe

Barton, owner and winemaker, as the old

farmhouse that has become the Grey Wolf

    den undergoes landscape construction. The

redwood deck finally weathered and gave

way to stamped concrete and a new patio will

be placed on the side yard to accommodate

wine-aficionados who frequent the west-sidePaso Robles facility on Highway 46. Grey

    Wolf is thriving.

When Joe Barton was just 24 years old,

however, he had to take the reins of the fledg-

ling family business and become the propri-

etor and leader of the pack. Joes father was

killed in a traffic accident in 1998 at the age

of young age of 50. Four years previously, the

elder Barton and his wife and two kids had

moved to Paso Robles from Bakersfield to

begin the dream of a winery called Grey Wolf.

It was a family business and the name

reflected that commitment to the family, a

    group of dedicated individuals working

together as a team, a pack. Producing small

lots of quality wines, Grey Wolf developed a

following that is once again steadily growing

under the scion of the family.

The younger Barton had just finished

    internship with Kendall Jackson when

    tragedy occurred. Hed graduated previou

from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a deg

in Fruit Science. I was unsure of mysBut, I got some good help and I was gi

    encouragement, says Barton, now

Bartons mother still plays a role at the win

and is involved in the business, but it is

who runs the day to day wine-making op

    tions.

With about 12 acres under vines on

acres of property, Grey Wolf is one of

boutique wineries that continue to grow

quality if not quantity. We do about 4,0

cases a year and really, I dont want to d

whole lot more. Were going to try compete in quality and develop this prop

for better grapes as well as buy the best fr

I can find, says Barton. Indeed, his man

is manic and he talks constantly, getting m

animated as he begins talking about wine

All the staffs in here. When it come

the wine, its just me and Enrique, s

Barton. Preferring to keep a close eye

everything he does, Barton doesnt emp

many people on the wine-making staff.

assistant, Enrique, has known him since those days in the 90s and

occasionally, he will have an intern or student employee from the

University. But like I tell them, if I teach you rightthen this [Grey

Wolf] shouldnt be your job. You should move on from here.

Grey Wolfs quality has gone up and thats not just subjective.

Barton is receiving more awards and more press attention as he

continues to put quality at the top of his priorities. Youre making

these wines when youre harvesting them, he says. Im looking at

the fruit and deciding what Im going to do with it, if Im going to

blend it and now, Ive sort of found my niche as to where Im getting

fruit fromso I know what to expect for the most part. Hes posi-

tively giddy when it comes to the process. Speaking in bigger

gestures, he talks about wine-making in the reckless way of a child

stringing sentences together when hes encountered his first passion.

Its evident that Barton is in his element, focusing on all of the partic-

ulars and nuances that make a wine great.

Im using more and more new oak. Before, I was using about

20% whereas now, Im up to probably 50% new oak, and a lot of it

Hungarian, says Barton. The largest proportion of my barrels isbetween one and four years old. He speaks of before as though it

were a time etched in stone, and maybe it is for him. Before is when

Grey Wolf was a small producer with a relatively loyal wine club and

not a whole lot more. There is no date that defines it, but he is no

longer in the before apparently. Now, Grey Wolf is focusing on the

wine, not the club. Now, Grey Wolf is producing high quality wines

in small lots and focusing on the fruit, the process and the brand. In

other words, its all about the wine.

I like making Zinfandel still quite a bit and thats become a real

focus right now. Were growing Syrah, Petite Sirah, Malbec, Cabernet

Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and some Grenache on the estate now,

says Barton. I really love Cab Franc, but its not producing the way

I want it to and its not the quality Im looking for. Its a struggler vine

and its inconsistent. Cab Franc is the one Ive really struggled to find

a good source for. Barton is also experimenting with Tempranillo

    and other Spanish varietals.

The Westside micro-climate in Paso Robles means more ocean

influence as the breeze actually picks up in the afternoons cooling off

and even bringing fog to the region that can vary from the daytime

and nighttime temperatures as much as 50 degrees. Malbec is my

favorite right now. But even that doesnt really thrive like I want it

to, here [in this climate]. Im getting a good source, though. Its got

that good strong mouth-feel and its a great wine.Bartons goal is to create what he calls a pull-market. Hed rather

have his wines being pulled than having to push them. Its no exer-

cise in esotericism that quality is job one at Grey Wolf. Ultimately,

if youre making a good wine, it will market itself. I mean, its such

a corporate business now. I dont even see how I could get to the size

that some of these guys are doing, he says. But there is still room

for boutique wineries. If youre good at it and youre making a solid

wine, theres a market there for you.

Grey Wolf Cellars is located on Highway 46 West in Paso Robles

just 2.5 miles west of Highway 101.

Midlife Crisis what a great name why

did you call it that? Kevin and Jill Mittan, the

owners of Midlife Crisis Winery, are used to

this question and many others. The Midlife

Crisis Winery is pouring at the Paso Robles

Wine Festival for the third time as the festival

celebrates its 25th anniversary. The premiere

Midlife Crisis pouring in 2005 was as

unorthodox as the winery name. MidlifeCrisis poured barrel samples (and only barrel

samples) of their 2004 first vintage Pinot

Grigio, Zinfandel and Syrah to an enthusiastic

    crowd.

But what is the real answer to the winery

being named the Midlife Crisis Winery? Jills

flip-quick answer is because she is the same

age as Disneyland. The real answer is a lot

more complex as are all things in life and

involves many reasons too numerous to name

all coming together in a moment of crisis. Theresult became an overwhelming desire to

chase an impossible dream, to believe in it

totally and a determination to make it real.

They threw caution to the wind once the deci-

sion was made to start the winery. In less than

four months, they sold their house in Los

Angeles, bought land in Paso Robles, started

the winery and crushed their first grapes.

Both agree that if they took the time to stop

and think, there might not be a winery today.

But there is a winery at least a pretty

good start of one. The 2004 vintage

numbered about 850 cases and featured ten

    wines including Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay,

    Syrah, Sangiovese, Barbera, Merlot,

Zinfandel, a red blend and two sparkling

wines (the last three named for the couples

Australian Shepherds) and is virtually sold

out. The 2004 wines won more than a dozen

awards including three gold medals. Produc-

tion doubled in 2005 and a limited release

Ros of Syrah was added to the wine list. The

2005 vintage premiered in January and has

already garnered two gold medals. The 2006wines are in the barrel and feature the addi-

tion of Nebbiolo to Midlife Crisis line of

    wine.

Winemaking and all other duties are a

shared responsibility for Jill and Kevin. The

wines reflect their love of food friendly wines.

The wines are started in neutral oak until the

essence of the fruit has a chance to emerge.

Then, oak is used carefully to enhance, not

overpower, the fruit. The results are well

balanced wines that pair well with food

    that can also stand alone.

In September of 2005, the Mittans ope

a cooperative wine tasting room in downto

Paso Robles called Wines on Pine.

November of 2006, Midlife Crisis Win

went solo. The tasting room at 1244 P

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINE COUNTRY NE

Learn more about the Paso Robles wine industrys growth

    during the 25-day countdown

It all started on Saturday, May 19, 1983 when 17 Paso Robles

wineries came together in the downtown city park to showcase their

artistry for the First Annual Paso Robles Wine Festival. These vision-

aries organized themselves to create a marquee event for the

burgeoning wine industry that at the time totaled 17 wineries in Paso

Robles. Today, there are 170 wineries in Paso Robles with more than

90 producers that showcase their wines during this annual jubilee.

On Saturday, May 19, the Paso Robles wine industry will celebrate the

25th Annual Paso Robles Wine Festival in the downtown city park,

    where it all began.

We used half the park the first year, says Herman Schwartz,

founding member of the Paso Robles Wine Festival Committee. I

worked with an advanced art student for the first logo of the festival,

lined up the T-shirts we sold and guaranteed the sales. We may have

had 1,200 or 1,500 people that year. That started the ball rolling.

The Paso Robles Wine Festival, always held the third weekend of

May, is one of the largest outdoor wine festivals in the State of Cali-

fornia. Approximately 6,500 tickets are sold annually to wine enthu-

siasts traveling to Paso Robles from all over the nation. I remember

in 1985 when we were up to 22 wineries in the park and people were

coming from as far away as the East Coast just for the festival, states

Gary Eberle, owner of Eberle Winery. It was then that I really knew

we were onto something (Wine Festival) good. Today, the wine

industry of Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo County is responsible for

    $113M in tourism expenditures.

In 1983, there were a total of 5,159 vineyard acres in the Paso

Robles American Viticultural Area (AVA), which also found its start

that year. The growing landscape was in its youth and on the cusp of

tremendous growth. An early estimate from 1983 states that $10M in

income was derived annually from the vineyard side of the industry.

Twenty-five years later there are more than 170 wineries in the Paso

Robles AVA, with 26,000 vineyard acres growing 40 different varietals.

The economic impact of wine and wine grapes in Paso Robles and San

Luis Obispo County equates to $1.8B. Paso Robles Wine Country is

the third largest and fastest growing wine region in California.

As the Wine Industry of Paso Robles grows and matures, so does

the Paso Robles Wine Festival, said Stacie Jacob, executive director of

the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance. What rings true throughout

the last 25 years is that the Wine Festival continues to be a celebration

about the world-class wines produced in Paso Robles. The entire

community comes together for this annual showcase.

The 25th Annual Paso Robles Wine Festival weekend is May 18

through 20. The marquee event in the park is Saturday, May 19, and

will feature more than 90 wineries pouring more than 150 distinct

and different wines from Paso Robles.

New to the festival is the Silver Pass admission ticket, in recogni-

tion of the 25th year. The new limited Silver Pass admission is $75

and allows wine enthusiasts the opportunity to experience one of the

largest outdoor wine tasting festivals in California, a full hour be

general admission ($50). The Silver Pass is available through adva

purchase only, all tickets are limited and advance purchase is hig

recommended by calling 800-549-WINE or visit

    www.pasowine.com.

The Off-Broadway Home ofGrand Vistas and Big Reds

The Pleasant Valley may be the off-

broadway tasting sect of Paso Robles,

but Silver Horse Vineyard and Winery

is more than happy to call it home. One of the

charms, aside from being minutes from the

downtown square, is that on a given Saturday

as limo groups turn many Highway 46

wineries into a Mardi Gras undo itself, the

new stunning tasting room that the Kroener

Family opened in early 2005 is the perfectlocale for those seeking exciting big red

blends in a setting that showcases Paso Wine

    Country at its best.

Silver Horse represents a whole lifestyle,

    winemaker Stephen Kroener says. The

tasting room is down home, comfy, cozy and

    elegant.

The Kroeners embarked on this winery

adventure in 1996, and a renovation of the

    existing operation soon followed. Our

tasting room has 365-degree views of vine-yards surrounding us, Stephen says.

Pleasant Valley has one of the larger

temperature swings in the area, and were all

    southern slope exposure overlooking the

Estrella River valley. Situated on a hilltop

overlooking hundreds of acres of vineyards,

the estate features what Steve calls 7,000-

    square-foot party pad, including a 3,000-

square-foot event building and 4,000 square

feet of luscious lawn thats just right for

sipping a Silver Horse Albario on.

    Stephens winemaking philosophy is f

simple. Im going to make wines that I lik

drink. Were a little bit different. We have

    Spanish wines: the Tempranillo,

Garnacha, the Albrario. We do a cou

    different Spanish blends. The rest

Bordeaux. We do make a Syrah to appease

masses. Within three years, Silver H

Winery will be 100% estate grown.

In the tasting room, a $5 fee gets you a

    by Dave Wilcox

Years before the current Pinot Noir

    renaissance began, Marc Goldberg and

    his wife, Maggie DAmbrosia, estab-

lished Windward Vineyard with the idea ofdoing one thing and doing it well producing

nothing less than a great American, Burgun-

    dian-style Pinot Noir.

A dozen years after its first release, Wind-

    ward remains exclusively Pinot Noir.

Goldbergs path to owning a winery

devoted to Pinot Noir began in the mid-1950s

    in Pittsburg.

    Burgundys great wines seduced Goldberg

at an early age. As he and DAmbrosia traveled

the country, however, they found the New

World Pinots didnt inspire similar passion. That is until 1987, when they tasted a

1976 Pinot produced by Hoffman Mountain

    Ranch (HMR).

It was just glorious, recalled Goldberg.

Goldberg and DAmbrosia set out to find

terroir similar to that of HMR. They found it in

an old barley farm in the Templeton Gap

region west of Paso Robles, where ocean

breezes sweep through on their way inland.

The chalky, well-drained soil combined with

daily temperature extremes of as much as 50

degrees are ideal for producing Pinot Noir,

    said Goldberg.

They planted the vineyard in 1989 and by

1995 released their first estate-bottled vintage.

Only grapes grown at Windward Vineyard areused in the wine, in the Monopole style of

complete viticultural control over the vineyard

    and the winemaking.

Indeed, Goldberg says a profile of a wine-

maker who produces Pinot Noir is really a

profile of the vineyard. That is where the

finicky grapes character is shaped, year in and

    year out.

Im not the winemaker, said Goldberg.

Im the wine shepherd. Windward Vineyard

is the winemaker. You let the vineyard express

itself in the glass. While Goldberg, who worked as a hospital

administrator until retiring in 1995, enjoys the

life as proprietor of a winery, he quickly grew

tired of the stuffy, de rigeur winemaker

    dinners.

Now 74, Goldberg sought to establish a

more relaxed event involving food and wine.

The result was the Pinot and Paella Cook-

Off, pairing Pinot Noir with the traditional

Spanish dish featuring rice, saffron, shellfish,

sausage, or whatever other ingredient th

    available.

Windward hosted the first event and G

berg said they had to turn away about

    people. Goldberg and DAmbrosia t

decided to make it a community event, wall proceeds donated to the Paso Robles Yo

Arts Foundation. Last year, the cook-off ra

    $28,000 for the foundation.

This years fourth annual Pinot and Pa

Cook-Off is June 10th at Templeton Com

nity Park. Sixteen chefs will offer their in

pretations of paella, with 12 Paso Ro

wineries pouring Pinot Noir. Visitors vote

the best dish (last years winner included d

legs, Mexican-style chorizo, ham and t

    shrimp.)

That 12 wineries from the area are pouPinot is something of a story in itself, no

Goldberg, recalling that when he establis

Windward in 1989 there were 12 win

    total in Paso Robles.

Windward Vineyard is located at 1380 L

Oak Road off Highway 46, about a mile w

of Highway 101. The tasting room is o

2007 Winery Music Awards Summer Concert SerieOne of the Central Coasts most successful music events ever

among local artists will be returning this year. Held on the grounds of

select Paso Robles wineries, the Winery Music Awards competition

(www.winerymusicawards.com) showcases the best original, unsigned

music artists in California and beyond with a backdrop of grapevines,

stacks of wine barrels and the smell of fermenting wine in the air. The

artists compete for significant prizes contributed by a variety of

sponsor companies within and outside the music industry. A panel of

notable judges influential in the music, entertainment and wine indus-

tries votes its choices for best artists of the competition. Artists are

judged in the categories of originality, musicianship and, most impor-

tantly, marketability to the wine-consuming market. The competition

is open to the music genres of: jazz, rock, blues, new age, acoustic,

country, folk, soft rock, reggae and adult contemporary.

The Grand Prize winner of the previous Winery Music Awardscompetition, held in 2005, was Arroyo Grandes rock group, Threes

and Nines, who is releasing their first CD this year after winning a

recording contract with RNB Music (www.rnbtunes.com), a Los

Angeles-based record label. The groups self-titled CD, will be distrib-

uted worldwide by Fontana Distribution, a division of Universal

Music. A second CD, titled Blend, featuring a compilation of many of

the 2005 artists complete with artist bios and liner notes on the Paso

Robles Wine Region, will also be released by RNB Music this summer

and will be available for sale at all Winery Music Awards concerts and

    the website.

The Winery Music Awards qualifying concerts are held on one

Saturday each month from June to September, with the Final compe-

tition and Awards show on Saturday, October 6. Confirmed hosting

wineries include Maloy-ONeill Winery (www.maloyoneill.com) and

Silver Horse Winery (www.silverhorse.com). I had the opportunity

to be a part of the 2005 Winery Music Awards by pouring my wine for

some of the judges at a private tasting. I am excited to be a host winery

for this years Winery Music Awards. Music and wine are a perfect

pairing and this event celebrates that pairing perfectly, says Shannon

ONeill of Maloy-ONeill Winery. Stephen Kroener of Silver Horse

Winery adds, Were thrilled to be a host venue for the 2007 Winery

Music Awards. We just finished building our event center and hosting

the Winery Music Awards is a fantastic opportunity to showcase ournew facility. Additional select wineries will host the other 3 concerts.

Those wineries will be announced once the arrangements are

    completed.

The Winery Music Awards competition, founded and produced by

Kathy Kelly Productions, Inc., (www.kellyprods.com) was created out

of the growing popularity of quality musical performances at many

wineries throughout California. Some wineries offer fine music,

others offer award-winning wines. Were offering award-winning

music at the regions finest wineries, says Kathy Kelly, creator of the

event and 17-year veteran in television direct response marketing.

Wine and music is the ultimate marriage of the senses, adds Ka

The atmosphere is both relaxed and filled with excitement at

same time. Hearing relatively unknown artists perform wonde

music is like tasting a new wine for the first time and absolutely lov

it--both moments are experiences to be savored. When you

everything into accountthe music, the wine, the winery atm

phere, and the chance to see and hear possibly the next Platin

seller, this truly is a unique and exciting event, adds Kelly.

Information about purchasing tickets, venue locations and con

times, as well as entry information and submission details for in

ested artists, can be found on the Winery Music Awards websit

When attempting to create a perfect

pairing of wine and food, vegetables are not

among the foods that commonly come to

mind as starting points. Their bitter compo-

nents can make wine pairing difficult. Butwhen searching for perfectly healthy foods,

asparagus is arguably among the best. It has

high nutrient density, is rich in folic acid and

is a good source of potassium, fiber, vitamin

    B6, vitamins A and C, and thiamin.

Asparagus has no fat or cholesterol and is low

    in sodium.

So, in an effort to create a perfect pairing of

wine with one of earths hard-to-pair, yet perfect foods, Executive Chef Ryan

Swarthout at JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery in Paso Robles selects a crisp 2006 JUSTIN

Chardonnay. The 2006 JUSTIN Chardonnay is not a buttery-style wine, and its not

over oaked, explains Swarthout. The fruit aspect cuts through the bitterness of theasparagus while the goat cheese element is contrasted nicely by the acidity of the

    wine.

The JUSTIN Chardonnay has aromas of green apple and pineapple, opens with a

burst of lively apricot and lemon, and finishes with smooth notes of honey and

    vanilla cream.

Justin and Deborah Baldwin purchased 160 acres of land in the remote Adelaide

Valley west of Paso Robles on California's Central Coast in 1981. Besides producing

the world famous blend ISOSCELES, and other award-winning wines, the estate

includes a luxurious French-style inn and elegant restaurant, Deborahs Room. The

restaurant offers nightly dinners and weekend

lunches on a wishing well patio to both inn guests

    and the general public.

Executive Chef Swarthout and Sous Chef Will

with a full selection of JUSTIN current and library

vintages. Reservations are required. Contact the

Black Hand Cellars Journey Has Just BegunThe family at Black Hand Cellars is a husband and wife team,

Valley north toward Californias border, Humbolt County. Through

this experience, the focus from being in the fishery business changed

dramatically to the wine business, but with one thing in common

the desire to produce quality out of Gods green earth. After

The vineyard, Torie Ranch (Tom + Terrie = Torie), is located on

LoCascio Continues to Blend the Worlds of

Art and Wine with Latest Work

    Local artist Christina LoCascio, renowned

for pioneering a new niche in the art world by

painting with wine, will reveal her latest workat her upcoming Intermezzo exhibition at

Artiste Winery & Tasting Studio in down-

town Santa Ynez on Saturday, May 26. The

exhibit runs through August 20, 2007.

Along with LoCascios new paintings, the

May 26 event will feature the release and

tasting of Artistes two newest wines, Inter-

mezzo and Encore, each bottle graced with a

    LoCascio painting for its label.

From 1 to 3 p.m. Artiste will be open to

the public with a signing party that will

feature bottle autographs by LoCascio andtasting of the new wines alongside an assort-

ment of Italian cheeses, fresh breads and

gourmet olives. From 6 to 8 p.m. Artiste will

hold the LoCascio Artist Reception where

customers can enjoy unlimited tasting of the

new wines while talking with the artist and

browsing her new collection. The receptionwill also feature gourmet pizzas and a

    cooking demonstration from Chef Micah

Elconin of the Educated Vegetable ($20 for

Artiste Club members, $40 for non-

    members).

    The Intermezzo exhibition delves deeper

    into LoCascios experimentation with form

and abstraction while still maintaining the

unique effects of using wine on paper.

My new paintings are softer and more

emotionally driven than those of my last

show, says LoCascio. Ive incorporated thefemale form into a number of paintings for

the Intermezzo exhibit, and the new pieces

exude a sense of fluidity and grace that I re

    love.

    By playing with elements beyond

    brushstrokes, she continues to explore

possibilities of this new medium. My la

    experiment has been with texture,

explains. Using clear acrylic gesso aprimer on the surface of the paper affects

absorption of the wine, and it adds

    amazing sense of movement to

    the background of the piece.

    A chance occurrence

involving a splash of wine on her

canvas began LoCascios playfulexperimentation with the

    varying shades and hues that

    wine can provide. Early trials

    with such processes as wine

    reduction proved successful at

    yielding more viscous wines

    with a pureness and intensity

    that brought an entirely new

level of depth to her paintings.

The combination of the two worlds of art and wine feels like a

natural evolution to LoCascio, who has long been a lover of both.

The buzz about LoCascios technique continues to increase, including a December 15th, 2005 feature in Wine Spectator and her

selection last fall as the featured artist for the Santa Barbara Conference

and Visitors Bureau at a 10-day exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany

    October 19th-29th 2006.

exhibit, or to R.S.V.P to the event, contact Artiste at (805) 686-2626

    or [email protected].

Combining a reverence for tradition and a philosophy of w

making as an artistic expression, Artiste wines are labeled w

gorgeous works of Impressionist art. Each wine blend is named a

the title of the painting that graces its bottle. Artistes highly soug

after wines are limited productions of less than 300 cases each andavailable exclusively through Artistes Tasting Studio in historic

Santa Ynez, www.Artiste.com, and select restaurants.
