The ‘New’ concept of purchasing foods from local sources is

old hat to many of the people who come to the Senior Center.

In fact, less than 70 years ago, most of the food consumed in

Sheridan County came from a local source. In the 1940’s,

Sheridan had over 1300 vegetable gardens, 29 licensed

dairies, a flour mill, potato farms, egg producers such as Clear

Creek Eggs, turkey and swine farms, and of course many

sources of local beef and venison.

Eating healthfully means finding foods with the most

nutrition value possible. Choosing local

foods is a great way to do this. By

growing your own food or buying foods

from local sources, you improve your

chances of freshness.

The Sheridan Senior Center plans to

locally source more food. Look for these

local foods on our new menu in the

coming months.

I am delighted to announce that Amanda

Munford has been hired as store manager for

Green Boomerang. Amanda comes to us

with a vast amount of customer service and

retail experience! She has exciting,

innovative and creative ideas for the store

and is a self-proclaimed thrift store shopper

and collector. Make sure you stop in and say

hello!

Exciting things are happening in the

near future for Green Boomerang! Once

Amanda gets settled we will hold a Grand Opening Party for

the store; we have a fall fashion show in the works from our

visual merchandiser, Elaine Burke, and

we have also acquired an official pick up

and delivery truck for Green Boomerang.

Now we soon will be able to better meet

the needs of our customers by offering a

pick up and delivery service.

It’s the people we serve that

is central to our mission. The

transformation, building and

construction at the Sheridan

Senior Center is all about

positioning ourselves to

provide the best services

and environment to a

current and emerging

generation of older adults

and their families who care

for them. Pictured on our

front cover are Day Break

staff member Vanessa

Thiele with Michael Garza

(left) and Tom Zelka, two

people we serve. Day Break

provides a place for adults

age 18 and older to gather,

play, and be with others.

Loved ones who are

caregivers can work or get a

break in their schedule of

caregiving. If you believe you

and your family may benefit

from Day Break services,

call Barb Blue, Director of

Day Break, at 672-2240.

The Inside Story… with Carmen Rideout, Executive Director

It has been a very productive summer

for all of us at the Senior Center. Work is

wrapping up on the new Day Break

building and thanks to O’Dell

Construction it is coming in on time and

within budget.

The expansion of our Goose Creek

Transit Facility is well underway.

Completion is expected in October and I

will report more in our next edition.

Design work is almost finished on the

Senior Center that will expand the kitchen and home

delivered meals and renovate the entire building to serve

more people. We will keep everyone posted as soon as

possible regarding logistics because construction at 211

Smith Street is likely to begin in October.

This would not be possible without you! I am so grateful to

be living in this community, a community that values its older

citizens and understands the importance of older people

being present in the fabric of our everyday lives. I know this

because of the generous dollars people give for our projects

and for our everyday operations and the amazing donations

of possessions we are receiving at the Green Boomerang. I

know this because of the tremendous passion our employees

and volunteers exude every day to do excellent work and

serve the people. I also know this because I witness local

businesses and organizations provide excellent customer

service and help us do our job. I know this because I see

people of all ages helping each other because that’s just

what we do in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Have a wonderful fall season! Please don’t hesitate to call

me if you have questions or concerns 307-672-2240.

Then … and Today Day Break was first built as an addition

to the main Senior Center building in

1990 (left). Below, Day Break Director

Barb Blue and Mary Legerski pose on

the front porch of the new Day Break

Building just west of the old Day Break

facility.

Thanks to the work of

a volunteer campaign

task force for our

CGBC Capital

Campaign, the Senior

Center is positioning

itself for service to the

emerging generation

of older adults. Here,

the Day Break Facility

and expansion on the

Transit Facility are

scheduled to be

completed in

September and

October 2016.

(below) The first bus barn was

built west of the Senior Center

on Smith Street. (right) Transit

Director Steve Ainslie stands by

expansion to the current bus

barn located at 2114 Eastside

2nd Street in Sheridan.
