The Fundação Oriente, set up in 1988, is a private, non- profit institution with the objective of fostering historical and cultural ties between Portugal and the countries of Asia through staging events and supporting initiatives of a cultural, educational, scientific and social type. With its headquarters in Lisbon, the foundation has delegations in Macau, in India and in East Timor. fundação oriente A core objective since the launch of the Foundation, the Museu do Oriente mission is to promote the legacy of the Portuguese Presence in Asia and raise awareness about the variety and richness of different Asian cultures. Portugal, the first European country to reach the furthest reaches of the Far East, has played a pioneering role in the globalisation process throughout centuries. The Museu do Oriente sets out the evidence of the Portuguese presence in Asia and the material reality of diverse Asian cultures. While structured around its collections, the Museu do Oriente is complemented by other activities connected to the sectors of research, training and performance events endowing the institution with a multidisciplinary purpose. tHe MuSeu do oriente eXHiBitionS teMporary eXHiBitionS The Museu do Oriente is organised around two major exhibitions displayed over the first and second floors of the building. In conjunction with these permanent exhibitions, the Museum stages a program of temporary exhibitions on its ground floor designed to promote the arts of Asia and revealing their most varied aspects. On floor 1, the exhibition features the artistic and documental objects collected over years by the Fundação Oriente. Given its representative range, this collection is considered one of the most important in Europe and containing pieces of renowned quality and of spectacular visual impact. Exuberant, whether for their polychromes or for their exoticism, the “Gods of Asia” exhibition appeals to all age ranges. Costumes, puppets, masks, paintings, ritual objects, dragons, games and statues tell stories, legends and beliefs over the course of the exhibition. The building, designed by Arch. João Simões, was

completed in 1939 and stands out for its recourse

to reinforced concrete and low relief allegorical

panels by the sculptor Barata Feyo. An architectonic

system of the Estado Novo and an example of port

architecture of the 1940s, the building underwent

modernisation and conversion to house the museum

but with due respect for its architectonic integrity.

The conversion project was carried out by the

architects João Luís Carrilho da Graça and Rui

Francisco.
