The Fundação Oriente, set up in 1988, is a private, non-
profit institution with the objective of fostering historical
and cultural ties between Portugal and the countries of
Asia through staging events and supporting initiatives of
a cultural, educational, scientific and social type. With its
headquarters in Lisbon, the foundation has delegations in
Macau, in India and in East Timor.

A core objective since the launch of the Foundation, the
Museu do Oriente mission is to promote the legacy of
the Portuguese Presence in Asia and raise awareness
about the variety and richness of different Asian cultures.
Portugal, the first European country to reach the furthest
reaches of the Far East, has played a pioneering role in the
globalisation process throughout centuries.
The Museu do Oriente sets out the evidence
of the Portuguese presence in Asia and
the material reality of diverse Asian
cultures.
While structured around its
collections, the Museu do
Oriente is complemented by
other activities connected
to the sectors of research,
training and performance
events endowing the institution
with a multidisciplinary purpose.

The Museu do Oriente is organised around
two major exhibitions displayed over the first
and second floors of the building.
In conjunction with these permanent exhibitions, the
Museum stages a program of temporary exhibitions on
its ground floor designed to promote the arts of Asia
and revealing their most varied aspects.
On floor 1, the exhibition features the artistic and documental
objects collected over years by the Fundação Oriente. With
various pieces of exceptional worth, highlights include 17th
and 18th century Chinese and Japanese folding screens, a
fine selection of Namban art, a collection of Companhia das
Índias porcelain with coats of arms and a significant range
of items detailing the cultures of the peoples of Timor.

The building, designed by Arch. João Simões, was
completed in 1939 and stands out for its recourse
to reinforced concrete and low relief allegorical
panels by the sculptor Barata Feyo. An architectonic
system of the Estado Novo and an example of port
architecture of the 1940s, the building underwent
modernisation and conversion to house the museum
but with due respect for its architectonic integrity.
The conversion project was carried out by the
architects João Luís Carrilho da Graça and Rui
Francisco.
