National Recycling Week 2008Evaluation at a GlanceC4Pa

Business ContactsFor the first time this year businesses were a specific target audience for NRW. To develop our understanding of the barriers and opportunities to recycling ain small businesses we developed an online survey that was distributed through various business networks. Specific cartridge questions were included in the survey. The research found that 53% of surveyed businesses recycle their printer cartridges, which is by far and away the most commonly recycled form of electronic waste.

Media CoveragePlanet Ark uses the media to generate interest and action around recycling. The National Recycling Week 2008 media campaign proved to be a success with the continued strong pick-up of National Recycling Week items by media outlets confirming the strength of the campaign’s brand. Below is a sample of the ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ media mentions.

radio and tV Community service announcements (Csa)

These ads featured a call to action to reduce recycling contamination. The radio CSA was played a minimum of 209* times (in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide) , and the TV CSA was played a minimum of 156* times on the metropolitan free-to-air channels. (*Air-play on other capital city and regional radio stations, or non-metropolitan TV stations is unable to be monitored.)

Who doesn’t love a party and who doesn’t love getting new stuff – especially when you don’t have to pay for them? Well hosting a Swap Party is a great way of combining these two passions – without costing the earth. The concept of a Swap Party is pretty simple. Just get a group of people together, ask everyone to bring their pre-loved items, display them and then let everyone take what they want – within the rules. Clothes, kids gear, toys, tools, sports equipment, books and DVDs and CDs are all swappable.

Swapping one cotton dress in place of buying a new one saves around 22,000 litres of water. So you get a new outfit and a clean conscience.

Since it was established as a world first in 2003, 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' has collected 5.3 million printer cartridges. These cartridges have been given a second life as eWood - an Australian invented wood replacement product that can, among other uses, be made into outdoor furniture, fencing and landscaping stock. The metal from cartridges is recycled and other elements are made into fuel replacing natural gas in heavy industry and industrial spill clean up kits. None of the materials that go into the `Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' collection boxes end up in landfill.

Lesson ObjectivesAfter completing this lesson, students will be able to:

1 Describe some of the benefits of recycling to the environment and society;

2 Detail the benefits of producing items from recycled material versus producing items from raw materials;

3 Explain to others the importance of recycling a material of their choice.

BackgroundRecycling has many environmental benefits including:

• Recyclingitems,ratherthansendingthemtolandfill saves landfill space for those items we can’t yet recycle;

• Recyclingdivertstoxicsubstancesfromlandfillthereby preventing leakage;

• Recyclingorganicmateriallikegardencuttingsand green waste prevent them breaking down to produce methane, a powerful green house gas.;

• Recyclingconservesnatural,andoftennon-renewable resources such as trees, water, oil, metals and minerals. It can also preserve natural ecosystems and habitats;

• Makingmostproductsfromrecycledmaterialuses less energy than making them from raw materials. Recycling therefore helps combat climate change.

These benefits of recycling mean that individuals, communities, schools and businesses can become more sustainable and take meaningful actions against climate change simply by recycling more.

IntroductionIn this lesson students will design a poster aimed at encouraging other students to recycle. Students will develop research and presentation skills by researching their own recycling topic and presenting it to others.

DurationThis activity may require more than one lesson to complete. Steps one and two will require approximately one hour to complete. Steps three and four could be completed in class time or allocated as homework. Step five is best allocated to a separate teaching period.
