Student Achievement
J.E. Rhodes utilizes developmentally appropriate assessments that drive instruction and provide student data in reading, writing, and math skills. CPM is administered in Pre-k and MAP/BAS is administered in kindergarten and first grade. Both are used for screening and progress monitoring.
TEKS mastery tests are developed by teachers and administered each nine weeks in kindergarten and first grade to measure mastery levels in elar, math, social studies, and science. The BAS (Benchmark Assessment System) is administered in kindergarten and first grade to identify reading levels and monitor progress. The data generated from these assessments is analyzed and used to determine groupings for instruction, interventions, and assist teachers in developing lesson plans and adjusting the scope and sequence as needed.
During the 2018-19 school year, we were able to intervene early to help identified students progress academically
and socially. Through problem-solving team meetings we were able to discuss, recommend, serve, and follow up
on approximately 110 students who were referred to the Problem Solving Team for academic, behavioral, and/or
speech concerns. The end of the year parent survey indicated that student progress was a strength of the
campus.
The results from the end of the year assessments were as follows:
Pre-kindergarten Circle Progress Monitoring (CPM) Benchmarks:
ELAR: 98%
Math: 98%
Kindergarten ESGI: TEKS Mastery Level ELAR: 99%
TEKS Mastery Level Math: 97%
Average end of year reading level 7 First Grade MAP: Reading Average Annual Student Growth 25 points 6.3 points above projected growth for the year Math Average Annual Student Growth 26 Points
5.2 points above projected growth for the year
TEKS Benchmarks: ELAR 90% Math 95% Science 93% Social Studies 95%
Average end of year reading level 19
Curriculum and Instruction
The scope and sequence curriculum document breaks down the TEKS and student expectations into four nine
week segments for each subject on all grade levels. It is updated annually with teacher input based on student
data. Teachers meet to share data and activities to assist in developing weekly lesson plans. Each teacher is then
responsible for individual weekly lesson plans aligned with the scope and sequence and include the TEKS, daily
objectives, relevant activities designed to meet the objective, resources, and activities that integrate technology
across the curriculum.
Identifying students in need of intervention is a priority. Interventions are provided for identified students in the
areas of reading, writing, and math. Writing activities are included in each subject area with an emphasis on
vocabulary.
Flexible scheduling of conference periods allow teachers to have common planning times and new teachers to
plan with their mentors. By scheduling PLC times on Friday afternoons and utilizing staff development days,
teachers are provided time to collaborate and make decisions based on student data regarding instruction and
interventions.
School Culture and Climate
J.E. Rhodes was described as a caring campus who shows concern and acceptance of students in the end of the
year survey. Promoting a positive and welcoming campus is always a priority. Parents are always welcome and
encouraged to volunteer and attend and participate in school events. At campus events, J.E. Rhodes utilizes staff
members to help translate for Spanish-speaking parents.
Individual students are recognized by their teachers for their unique qualities and achievements. Four times per
year teachers nominate students for a variety of achievements and special talents at the Stand Out Student
Awards. Each student receives a ribbon and certificate. Parents and family members are invited to attend.
Each nine weeks the ECSC and Pre-kindergarten students are recognized by their teachers for academic and
behavioral progress, perfect attendance, and character traits at the Early Childhood Awards Ceremony.
College awareness is promoted from day one. Every Wednesday we celebrate College Day by wearing college t-shirts and giving out random prizes that include t-shirts, buttons, banners, posters, bracelets, stickers, etc. from a variety of colleges and universities. Each classroom also adopts a college or university and decorates their
classroom accordingly. Each classroom’s college or university and students careers are spotlighted on announcements throughout the school year. Throughout the year students are randomly recognized for reaching goals or other accomplishments by receiving
a Mr. Bell’s Brag Note, where parents are notified and the student’s accomplishment is celebrated or a STAR note
where they are recognized during daily announcements.
Each week a student from each class is chosen as the Vandal of the Week for demonstrating the traits of a
RHODES student. These traits include being respectful, honest, optimistic, determined, enthusiastic, and
successful! They have their pictures posted on the VOW bulletin board and J.E. Rhodes Facebook page. They are
also awarded the privilege of sitting at the college table for lunch and choosing a friend to sit with them for the
week. Additionally, two students are chosen as PE All STARS for good sportsmanship, leadership, and following
safety rules during PE class. They have their certificates displayed on the ALL STARS bulletin board and J.E. Rhodes
Facebook page.
Each nine weeks the class in each grade level with the highest attendance rate is awarded individual ribbons and
an ice cream party with the principals. Cafeteria incentives are also awarded to the kindergarten and first grade
class with the best behavior each week. These incentives vary from prizes, extra recess and/or a picnic with the
principals.
Individual teachers receive recognition through personal notes or ribbons from the principal and assistant
principal. One staff member is elected monthly and recognized as Employee of the Month. They are awarded
with a plaque, a gift basket, and a front parking space. One teacher is nominated and chosen as the Teacher of
the Year and is recognized at the VISD Hall of Fame and Teacher of the Year banquet.Staff members are also
recognized on national recognition days, birthdays, and for special achievements with ribbons, thank you notes,
and in the weekly faculty news. Special luncheons and treats are also provided to staff members throughout the
year to show appreciation.
Parent and Community Involvement
J.E. Rhodes is committed to a full partnership with parents and community in providing an optimum learning
experience for students. In the end of the year survey, family involvement and special events were named as a
strength. Our parental involvement team meets regularly to plan events, and review feedback and evaluations
from parents and community members.
The current structure for parent and community involvement distinguishes between participation as a volunteer
and participation in school activities and events. By law, volunteers must complete application forms from the
Texas Safe Schools Project and pass a background check. Parents and community members may participate in
planned activities and events without this application process.
Activities and events for parent and community participation include Literacy Partners, Meet the Teacher,
parent/teacher conferences, Strong Fathers Reading and Science Nights, Bring Your Dad to School Day, Spring
Interactive Parent Night, Veterans Day activities, Grandparents’ Day, Pumpkin Museum, Career Day Parade, Fire
Prevention Week, Red Ribbon Week, Dental Care lessons, Stand Out Student Awards, nursing home visits,
Volunteer Recognition, visiting for lunch, Pre-kindergarten, Title 1 parent trainings, PTO meetings, and assisting
with field trips.
At the end of the school year, all of the volunteers that worked in our school during the year are recognized with
a special gift. Literacy Partners are recognized during a reception at Van ISD Administration office.
Technology
Currently each classroom is equipped with a 65” monitor, one teacher issued iPad and chromebook, and an
eBeam interactive board. Pre-kindergarten classes are equipped with Smart Display boards systems. In addition
to these we have 1 to 1 iPads that are used to reinforce skills taught in the classroom, differentiating instruction,
creating projects, providing enrichment opportunities, supporting interventions, and researching various topics.
Our MakerSpace room has been expanded and includes robotics and other high tech activities that promote
collaboration, creativity, and problem solving among students.
J.E. Rhodes has a technology committee made of members that are up to date on instructional technology and
assist their team members with reviewing software, apps, purchasing equipment for Makerspace, and writing
lesson plans to integrate technology in all content areas. Select members of this committee also serve on the
district technology team and participate with district staff development during technology training days.
Teachers’ levels of proficiency with the use of technology in the classroom and ongoing professional development
in this area are celebrated through the use of the badging system.
Safe and Disciplined Environment:
In compliance with the Texas Education Code Section 39.053, VISD completes an annual performance report
regarding the number, rate and type of disciplinary incidents occurring on campuses. These reports show that
the offenses are not of a criminal nature and are categorized primarily as repeated violations of rules in the VISD
Student Code of Conduct. VISD currently publishes by campus, safety rules, dress codes, and discipline codes. J.E.
Rhodes also provides assemblies, annual health fairs, speakers, and parent training opportunities to encourage
student safety and the importance of making healthy choices. In addition, the counselor teaches character
lessons to students and refers to them when assisting with students in need of her services. Medical services are
also available at J.E. Rhodes including a nurse and trained staff housed on campus, health screenings, dental
work, and information about healthy choices, health information about drug and alcohol abuse, as well as
information on other risky behaviors. School-wide procedures have been revised to meet student needs in the
new building and we have a behavior teacher and assistant on staff that provide interventions and services for
identified students.
For the 2018-2019 school year, J.E. Rhodes reported a total of 7 office referrals. The top category for the offenses
was Student Code of Conduct. Specific documentation is included on referrals to better inform teachers,
counselors and administrators and to assist in the development of an individual plan for students as needed.
