Wildland Fires

BO P3500.1_ Chapter 1

Range Safety Certification Course 11

8/11/2008 Range Control, MCB Camp Pendleton

21

Wildland Fires • All personnel must recognize that training

activities start over 200 wildland fires a year in our training areas (excluding fires in the Zulu, Whiskey and Quebec impact areas)

• Wildland fires are potentially devastating to life and property

• Wildland fires will cause all training to stop in the vicinity of the fire and potentially cause all training aboard the base to stop until the fire is out or under control

8/11/2008 Range Control, MCB Camp Pendleton

22

• Fire Danger Rating (FDR)– In order to allow maximum training during the fire

season while providing a reasonable capability to contain the 200+ wildland fires started every year on the base, the Commanding Officer, MCB Camp Pendleton publishes Fire Danger Ratings and some associated restrictions to training based on prevailing conditions

– The FDR applies to all organizations and individuals aboard Camp Pendleton

– LONGRIFLE will notify RSOs of the FDR and of changes as they occur

Wildland Fires (cont)

Range Safety Certification Course 12

8/11/2008 Range Control, MCB Camp Pendleton

23

Fire Danger Rating (FDR)• 0-30 Low

– Use normal caution• 31-40 Moderate

– Use normal caution, fires will start easily• 41-60 High

– Use extra caution, fires will start very easily– Beginning of elevated danger period– Smoking permitted in cleared areas only

• 61-80 Very High– Use extreme caution, fires are very hard to control– Smoking permitted in cleared areas only

• 81-100 Extreme – Units must exercise utmost caution with fire producing agents and

devices– Off road driving must be authorized by LONGRIFLE– Use of any type of flame-producing device in training areas is

prohibited– Smoking is prohibited

8/11/2008 Range Control, MCB Camp Pendleton

24

• All fires are to be reported• Personnel will not generally engage in fire fighting

– Unit leaders must place the greatest amount of importance on personnel safety

– Under no circumstances will personnel attempt to fight a fire in an impact area

• Upon discovering a fire, the senior person present should take the following steps– Determine if the using unit can extinguish the fire– Evacuate all personnel that are in danger– Inform LONGRIFLE of fire size and location– Provide cause and type– Remain in a safe location subject to the orders of the fire department
