ACCEpT ME FOR WhO i AM

Christ accepted us as we are, so we need to accept others as they are, and in so doing we bring glory to God. But what does it actually mean to accept one another? One of the most challenging elements of leading the ministry of Calvary Community is helping groups navigate the tricky waters of accepting people as they are. In theory, this seems a rather straightforward charge. This chal-lenge comes up regularly when we regard the church, not only as the 4000 people in the Sanctuary on Sunday morning, but as the fifteen people in our living room on Mon-day night. It is here that people become real with one another and their beliefs and character surface. It is also here that we find out that spiritual growth is not always linear.

How do we help groups become more accepting? Here are three things we can pray for to help us in that area. First, we need to ask God for wisdom in regard to the differ-

ing levels of spiritual maturity in your group. There is no simple for-mula for accepting people for who they are. One person may need to be gently loved and accepted just as they are, while another may need a prayerful confrontation to change. This takes wisdom from above and a group can never spend too much time seeking God’s counsel in this!

Secondly, we need to ask God for a supernatural love for one anoth-er. So many people come into a group suffering from a sense of inadequacy, which leads to a fear of vulnerability. Tragically, sometimes these inadequacies can come from rejection or a lack of affirmation in our corporate body. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if our groups were so filled with Christ’s love that it spilled over to the hurting by sheer osmosis and they were able to “… have power, together with all the saints to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to

know this love that surpasses knowl-edge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” (Eph. 3:18-19)

Lastly, the overarching goal of ac-cepting one another is to bring glo-ry to God. We aren’t accepting for the sake of accepting. Nor are we accepting as the world accepts, as if we are seeking political correctness. On the contrary, we are accepting because that is how we create unity in the body. We are living out the principles that make us a unique and sacred people of God. May God continue to grant us wisdom, and a love that fills us with the full measure of God so that we will give Him all the honor and praise!

“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God” Romans 15:7

Our goal at Calvary is to see every believer experiencing authentic Christian community. A Community Group is a great place to build caring relationships; join us! New groups will be forming on September 28 at our Community Group Launch. We would love for you to experience community here at Calvary Church. To join one of the new groups, plan to attend the launch on September 28 and complete a registration form located at the Connection Point, on the web at MyCalvaryGR.org, or contact Brenda Neher ([email protected]) at 956-9377, ext. 5650. Please register by September 22.

These groups gather in homes for the purpose of growing spiritually and relationally. You will be asked to commit to meet at least 8 times (most groups meet every other week). You will meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word and care for one another.

If you are unable to join us on September 28, you can still be part of a group. Just fill out a registration form by September 22 to be placed in a new group.

If you are interested in facilitating a group or hosting one in your home, please contact our office for more information. You’ll be surprised how easy it is. Contact Brenda Neher ([email protected]) at ext. 5650 with any questions.

hannah’s heart“It was 1980 and we were coming home from vacation in Florida. I still remember the name of the city...it was Tifton GA. I was into my second trimester of pregnancy. Fred and I were enjoying some time together before we added to our family again. When the contractions started, I began to panic. By the time we reached the hospital; there was no stopping the labor. I miscarried. My heart was shattered. Fred was devastated. I was broken.” ~Deb Donker, Retired Registered Nurse

“I was so excited anticipating the birth of another grandchild. After a completely uncomplicated pregnancy my daughter went to the hospital to be induced. When she got there, there was no heartbeat. The baby was stillborn and it felt like my heart would collapse. I didn’t know what to say or do. I turned to the Lord with my heavy grief.” ~Judy DeVries, Registered Nurse

Two different women, two different stories but together they share the grief experienced from miscarriage or the loss of an infant child. This type of grief has been described as “a scorching of the heart.” Hannah’s Heart is a new Calvary ministry offering Christ-centered, spiritual and emotional support. Do you know someone experiencing this type of heavy loss? Hannah’s Heart would like to help. Whether in person or over the phone, Deb and Judy would like to provide support to those grieving. Contact our Pastoral Care ministry ([email protected]) at 956-9377, ext. 3672 to get connected with Hannah’s Heart.

The Joy of a Job

With pride and great joy, Go Getter individual Derrick now has meaningful employ-ment. Through the kindness of a local company, seeking to fill an open position with someone who has a disability, Derrick now spends three days a week fulfilling his strong desire to be part of the work force. When asked about his new job he just beams and with a quiet demeanor says God worked it out! We praise God for individ-uals who are willing to provide meaningful work to those who struggle to find jobs. His work ethic is inspired by Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

Faithful Volunteers

Preparations for the fall session of Go Getters is always a large task. With their generous gift of time, volunteers aid in making the transition to the fall session go smoothly. From T-shirts, to name badges, card making and labeling enve-lopes, faithful volunteers, Katie and Deb, step up to the plate.

Katie, an individual who attends Calvary’s Special Needs Ministry, accompanied by her Community Living Support staff, Deb, come weekly to serve the ministry with their spiritual gifts. All of us have spiritual gifts that we must use to share God’s grace with others. These two women live out 1 Peter 4:10, “Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others. Be good servants of God’s various gifts of grace.”

Have you seen one of Calvary’s newest endeavors to reach across cultural barriers to minister to those in our area who don’t know Jesus? It is our ministry to the deaf and hard of hearing community with their own language: ASL (American Sign Language).

Tuesday evening classes in this beautiful and expressive language resume on Sept. 16. There will be multi-level teaching both for beginners and those who have had previous classes. Please contact Debbie Mills ([email protected]) by Sept. 1 to be added to the email list for further information. A book is required and the cost for that is about $37.

Explorers & Seekers Celebrate Summer with an Ice Cream Social

On a bright, warm, beautiful Thursday evening, the Explorers and Seekers fam-ilies gathered at Grand Rapids Township Park to enjoy all the delights of summer – sun, fun, ice cream, and good company! Students ran around carefree and full of life! After a shared time of eating picnic dinners and a little more playing every-one enjoyed assorted ice cream treats as

relief from the warmth. It was a joy to see the smiling faces and the community happening that evening and it’s safe to say it’ll be sad to see summer go. Until next year!

SERVINGIN MIDDLE SCHOOL MINISTRY

you have what it takes!

Middle School Ministries needs volunteers to help lead small groups for their Wednesday night programs for both 5th/6th and 7th/8th grades. We know you might be interested, but you probably have some questions. Here’s what we hear a lot, and how our current leaders and students respond.

How much time does it take? “About 45 minutes to 1 hour between praying and looking over the lesson.”

But I’m not good with kids! “[A good leader] shows up, listens, has persistence.”

“My leader is humble and gives good advice.”

You can do that, right?

In the end, will it even matter? “They made me feel like a somebody”

“I could tell they loved me and that was a blessing”

come make animpact with us!

I had the privilege of serving in Kids N Action this past year - what a joy! Sure...there are the occasional out-bursts, corralling kindergarten boys, a few tears and nights that the sight of parents brought a bigger than usual smile for me 'cuz spring fever was spreading like fire. But - the abandon that the kids approach life with, the way that they just "get" that Jesus is awesome and aren't afraid to say it, the smile you couldn't wipe off my face when one of my kids earned his "N"ecklace (told 20 of his friends what it says "n" the Bible about how to get to heaven) that's energizing! Each week I was able to see and experience a reminder of what our Heavenly Father is looking for - His children being real. Sometimes we're naughty, sometimes we're nice. God told us to let the little children come - no strings attached. I don't know a better place to see that lived out than working with kids! If you need a reminder of what free worship looks like - just listen to our kids sing our theme song. That has to bring a beaming smile to our Father's face - to hear a room full of kids respond to "so whatcha gonna do" with "put your Faith-N-Action!"

Gretchyn Lauer plays keyboards with the worship band here at Calvary Church. She has always had a deep desire to serve the Lord and has seen him lead as she uses her piano talents to reach out and to lead others in worship. But, God has a way of bringing new, unexpected opportunities to serve into our paths! Here’s the story Gretchyn tells:

It all started three years ago when a friend who is a member of Calvary encouraged me to enter ArtPrize. I never considered myself a true artist, yet in that moment I strangely felt God’s prompting. Soon after this urging, God gave me a vision for how to use art for His glory. He instilled in me the idea to paint a sex-trafficking victim to help raise awareness for these poor girls who suffer in horrifying ways. While most of us may wish to have God tell us exactly what He wants, for me, it was a humbling and frightening mo-ment to be directly and audibly called into an area where I was completely out of my depth. I had never painted something on a large scale and I’ve never had formal art lessons.

All through the journey, however, God’s strength has truly been made perfect in my weakness. You see, as He gave me His vision, He also promised that He would take care of all my worries concerning the painting. He promised to bring people into my life that would be His hands and feet in the areas where I needed help. So, when I needed a truck

large enough to transport my painting, a member of Calvary offered me His truck. When I wasn’t sure how to paint or what colors to pick, God whispered His guidance in my ear. When I needed to find a venue where it would make the most impact, one of the most desirable and visited venues (the Devos Place Convention Center) actually sought out my painting. And when I needed help in many other ways, many others including my boss and people from Wedgewood Christian Services and Calvary stepped in to offer support, love, creativity and encouragement.

Our God is concerned with the widows and orphans of this world. He is a father to the fatherless who longs to set every captive free - and He wants to use us to show all people His love and grace. When we take notice of these trafficked girls, we find ourselves directly in line with His will. That is the greatest place of all because there we get to witness God moving in mighty ways and be a part of His redemptive plan. Our God is a God of compassion, strength, and mercy. He takes the lowly and raises them up to do His will to bring His great name glory, honor, and praise. I could never paint some-thing like this on my own strength. The beauty of the painting is not a testimony of my artistry but rather the greatest proof I can offer you that our God can do extraordinary things when we surrender to Him.

You can see Gretchyn’s painting – and voice your support for it and for ministries fighting against human trafficking – at the Devos Place Convention Center. ArtPrize runs from September 24 through October 12.

If you are interested in joining a group here at Calvary that strategizes ways to prevent human trafficking both locally and globally, please contact Paul and Carol Veenstra ([email protected]).

update & frequently asked questions

We hope you will join us at the Annual Meeting on September 21, where, in addition to our regular church business, we will provide an update on Grace Beyond. There will be time set aside during the meeting for questions you may have regarding Grace Beyond.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING, OCTOBER 5Two weeks later, on Sunday night October 5, we will hold a special congregational meeting at 6:00pm in the Sanctuary to affirm whether or not God would have us move forward with Grace Beyond. This vote is the next step in our journey as a church, allowing us to confirm as a congregation whether or not God is truly calling us to renovate and enhance our facility. Along with this vote, we will celebrate together the ways God’s grace has been made evident over the church’s nearly 90 year history.

Our church constitution mandates that a two-thirds majority affirm that the congregation believes God is leading in this direction. A “yes” vote will authorize the building committee to provide advice and guidance to the elders in the design and construction process. By providing affirmation of this project, each church member also commits to prayerfully consider his or her part in giving sacrificially for this project to the glory of God.

If the majority votes “no,” this will mean that the congregation does not believe Grace Beyond is God’s plan for our church at this

time. Holding to our prior commitment, the church will build the prayer garden with the funds already given toward this project. If the congregation decides against moving forward with Grace Beyond, the elders may revisit updating our facility in the future as the Lord directs.

Immediately following the October 5 meeting, we will host a fellowship dessert to celebrate God’s direction to our community. Together as a church family, we will rejoice that we have heard from God, and that His plans for us are always good.

NEXT STEPSIf the congregation chooses to move forward with Grace Beyond, we will proceed with finalizing the building plans, and enter a season of prayer through Spring 2015. This season will provide us with the opportunity to learn more about the building project as plans are finalized and give prayerful consideration to how we can sacrificially give to enable this project to proceed. With the support of the Calvary community, we anticipate beginning construction in summer 2015.

If you need more information about Grace Beyond, visit GraceBeyond.org or pick up a brochure at the Information Center. You may also contact the elders at [email protected].

· FrEquENtlY AskED quEstiONs ·What is the cost of the Grace Beyond project? With all construction projects, there are many unknown variables. At this point, we understand that all of the costs associated with the project (design, construction, fixtures, furniture, mechanicals, etc.) will be approximately $25 million.

Is the church going to build when they receive all the funding or will the church finance some of the building? In order to begin the process, even if we have pledges to cover the $25 million, we will have to finance some of the initial construction costs on a short-term basis since the pledges will be given over a multi-year time period.

What if Calvary receives pledges totaling less than $25 million? Our hope is that God would provide generously through His people the entire $25 million in cash or pledges over a three-year period. While we may need a construction loan, our goal is that Calvary would have no debt at the end of the three years. If cash or pledges fall short of our goal, the elders will prayerfully consider revising our building plans to use what God has provided to meet the priorities we believe God has given us for this project (Prayer Garden, Children’s Ministry, Student Ministries). Obviously, the possibility exists that cost overruns could require some financing that may exceed three years, but we will keep the congregation fully informed if that develops.

What if Calvary receives pledges totaling more than $25 million? If Calvary receives pledges totaling more than $25 million, we will celebrate! Additional money will enable us to have a larger contingency fund for unexpected costs. Any funds left after the building

project is complete will go to support Calvary Church’s ministry here in Grand Rapids and around the world. This may include the resident program, church planting initiatives and international mission work.

If the congregation affirms that God is calling us to move forward with Grace Beyond, when will pledges begin? We anticipate asking members to indicate their three-year commitment to Grace Beyond in spring 2015. We are still working out the details but we anticipate monthly, quarterly or yearly pledges will begin in the spring.

What if I want to make a donation to Grace Beyond, especially at the end of 2014?If the Lord directs you to give prior to the collection of pledges, the deacons have already established a Grace Beyond project fund that can accept donations.

revelationWe believe that in addition to his general revelation in nature, God has revealed himself in all the words of the Old and New Testaments. These well-preserved and infal-lible books contain no errors in the original writings and are our final authority in faith and life. These sacred texts lead us to Jesus Christ, the fullness of God’s revelation, and enable us to rightly interpret God’s active engagement in humanity, nature, and history (Romans 1:20; 2 Timo-thy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:19-21; Matthew 5:18; 2 Peter 3:16; 1 Corinthians 2:10-13; 1 Corinthians 10:11; 2 Thessalonians 2:14-15; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; Romans 15:4).

GodWe believe in one holy, sovereign, and all-knowing God who eternally exists in three coequal persons— Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father directs and sustains all things through his Son and by his Spirit. The Son is the mediator through whom God creates, governs, and re- deems the world. The Spirit accomplishes the works of God, bringing honor to the Son who glorifies the Father, so that God is perfectly satisfied within himself. This triune God who from love and for his glory created all things out of nothing and pronounced them good will bring all things to perfection (Psalm 73:25-26; 1 John 4:7-8; 1 Chronicles 29:11; Psalm 99:9; Psalm 139:1-18; 1 Timothy 2:5; John 14:16-17; 2 Peter 3:9; James 1:17; Psalm 18:30).

humanityWe believe that God created Adam and Eve in his image so that he might love them and they might love him and glorify him. However, our first parents lost their original righteousness when they fell for Satan’s temptation and rebelled against God’s revealed will. Now every human is born with Adam’s sinful nature so that we are depraved, alienated from God, spiritually dead and physically dying.

What We BelieveThe following statement of “What We Believe” is the result of many years of prayer, study and feedback. Our hope is for this statement to clearly outline the basic beliefs of our faith, with which all church members should agree. We will be voting on September 21 to include this statement in our official church con-stitution, replacing the statement it currently contains. [The lon-ger, “What We Teach” document which also has been available for congregational feedback, will NOT be part of the constitution and is not a part of this vote.]

12 | September 2014 | calvarygr.org

Our sin has corrupted God’s good creation, bringing dis-cord and disaster to society and nature. The world would immediately perish if not for God’s common grace, which restrains sin and preserves creation so that God’s special grace can save it (Genesis 1:26-31, 3:6, 3:17-19; Psalm 8:4-5, 51:5; Matthew 5:16; John 3:16-21; Romans 3:10, 5:12; Acts 17:27-28).

Jesus christWe believe that the Son of God became human to save the world. Our Lord Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, one person in two natures, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus is the promised Messiah of Israel who obeyed God perfectly; atoned for our sins by shedding his blood in our place and on our behalf; arose bodily and triumphantly over Satan, sin, and death; and ascended to heaven where he reigns over all things at the Father’s right hand, intercedes for his people, and sends his Spirit to gift, fill, and lead his church (Matthew 1:18; Luke 24:50-51; John 1:1; John 1:14; John 3:17; John 10:30-33; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Colossians 2:9; 1 John 2:2; 1 Peter 2:24).

holy SpiritWe believe that the Holy Spirit is a fully divine person who is sent by the Father and the Son. He convicts the world of guilt in regard to sin, righteousness, and judgment; and persuades us through the proclamation of the gospel to confess Jesus as Lord and abides within us as our comfort-er, helper and guide. He is God’s empowering presence with us and the down payment ensuring our future glory (Matthew 10:20; John 14:16-17; John 15:26; John 16:7-8; Acts 5:3; Romans 8:14; Romans 8:16; 1 Corinthians 12:3; Galatians 4:6; Titus 3:5).

SalvationWe believe all who repent of their sin and trust solely in Christ’s finished work of atonement, salvation, and re-demption are united with Christ, justified by his death and resurrection, reborn and adopted into the family of God, forgiven of all their sin, indwelt and illuminated by the Spirit, empowered for Christian service, kept and assured of their salvation, and added to the church (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 3:21-31; Ezekiel 11:19; John 6:44-45; John 10:27-29; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:37-38; Romans 8:9-11; Romans 8:15-17; Galatians 2:20; Galatians 4:4-5; Ephesians 1:5; Ephesians 1:18-20; 2 Timothy 1:8-9).

the churchWe believe that the one, holy, and universal church is the body and bride of Christ. The Holy Spirit descended at Pentecost to establish the church. The true church consists of all New Testament believers in heaven and on earth who have been justified by grace through faith in Christ and

is manifest in local churches that assemble in the name of the Lord. The local church gathers to worship God and experience his presence through the preaching of the word, prayer, fellowship, testimonies of grace, the public reading of Scripture, the exercise of spiritual gifts, and the ordinances of bap-tism and the Lord’s Supper (Calvary Church practices believer’s baptism). The church proclaims the gospel of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection to a sinful world and is an agent of God’s blessings to the world, which must hear the good news in order to be saved. The church makes disciples of Jesus who em-body the kingdom values of loving neighbor, serving those in need, and caring for creation and so anticipate the final redemption of all things after Christ’s return (Matthew 16:16-18, 28:19-20; Matthew 18:20; Acts 2:42-47; Romans 12:4-8; Ephesians 2:14-22, 4:10-13, 5:29; Colossians 1:18).

angels and DemonsWe believe that angels are spiritual beings cre-ated by God to serve and worship him. The righteous angels are God’s messengers who promote his rule and protect his children by battling Satan and the fallen angels who joined his rebellion. Satan and his demons are the sworn enemies of God. They gained a foothold in this world when Eve, then Adam fell as a result of Satan’s temptation, but they have been defeated by Christ and will be forever punished in the lake of fire (Isaiah 6:1-7, 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:11-19; Romans 16:20; Hebrews 1:14; 2 Peter 2:11; Revelation 4-5, 20:10).

the return of christWe believe in the personal, bodily and pre-millennial return of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus will gloriously rapture his church at any moment. He will return to bring his kingdom to completion by delivering this world from Satan’s power and handing it to the Father. He will raise the dead physically for final judgment; send the lost to everlasting, con-scious punishment; and live forever with his redeemed people in the joys of the renewed creation (Daniel 7:15-28, 9:24-27; Matthew 24:4-29; Mark 13:32, 9:48; 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, 15:42-49; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; Titus 2:13; Revelation 20:7-10, 21:3-4).

NOTE: The elders may substitute Scripture references from time to time as they deem appropriate.

The Nomination Process for Elders & DeaconsSeveral months prior to the annual congregational meeting, the Elders appoint a nominating committee. The committee requests from the congregation at large, the pastoral staff and the current Elders and Deacons, names of potential candidates for the office of Elder or Deacon. (For a specific list of the qualifications of an Elder or Deacon see page six in the Calvary Church Constitution, available at calvarygr.org.) Once the process of gathering potential candidates has ended, the Nominating Committee prays over and reviews the names submitted over a process of several weeks. They then submit the names of qualifying candidates to the Elders, who also spend time praying over the list. Once they are in agreement as to the candidates that should be on this year’s slate of nominees, each candidate is contacted to see if they are willing to be considered.

The slate of nominees is printed in the church bulletin prior to the meeting, and attendees are asked to contact any elder should they have serious objections to a nominee. At the annual meeting, the congregation is asked to approve each candidate by secret ballot. Once the ballots have been cast and tabulated, the Clerk and at least one Elder places stones corresponding to each approved nominee in two containers (one for Elder and one for Deacon candidates) that allow for suitable randomization. A congregational member selected by the Chairman will draw out of each container the number of stones corresponding to the number of open positions. The people whose names correspond to the stones chosen will become the newly selected Elders and Deacons.

Women’s TuesdayEveningBible Study

Three different 8-week studies will be offered from 6:30-8:00pm on Tuesdays. Each study is $10. Register for one, two or all three at MyCalvaryGR.org.

As a working woman, I can hardly wait each week to get together with other ladies who are more hungry for the spiritual meal God provides through His awesome Word than for dinner. Although you are encouraged to come early and eat together for a time of fellowship and refreshment, the ultimate purpose of our gathering is to be fed on how to become more like Christ or to get equipped to go out and be the salt of the earth! Please consider one, two or all three of the studies that the Lord has laid out for Fall, Winter and Spring. It’s time to eat and and to eat often... to gain wisdom, knowledge, understanding and to be lavished by the love and truth of God’s grace, Jesus Christ. Zero calories, of course!

Sabrina Fairchild, Facilitator

Heroes of FaithOctober 7-November 25

Douglas Connelly’s study on the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 will deepen your trust in our great God, who still keeps all his promises, so that you might live out your faith in radical ways today.

Choosing ForgivenessBegins Sept. 8 | 9:00-11:30am | Yellow houseScripture says that offenses will happen. People will let us down and we will let others down, too. Forgiveness is left up to us to pray about and then practice. Far from minimizing the hurt of the offense, participants are called to un-derstand that offering forgiveness and letting go of bitterness is the only way to walk in faithfulness. Drawing on biblical teaching of our call to forgive, author Nancy DeMoss shows that forgiveness is a choice, and the only pathway to true

Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other Christians and do life together. When you experience true community, you have close friends who meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word, and care for one another. In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or contact Brenda Neher ([email protected]).

We are so glad you have joined us today. We know there are many churches you could have chosen to attend and we are glad you chose to be here. We believe that you are not here by accident, that God has brought you to this place for a specific purpose. We look forward to connecting with you and caring for you in any way that we can.

This is a big church, we know... but you’d be surprised at how quickly you can find your place. On this page, and throughout the Calvary Life, are ways to meet people and get involved

at Calvary. You will find there really is something for everyone!.
