C.O.M.E. - Calvary On Mission EverydayHelpers Needed During the day there are times when we need someone to help transport a person to different places in Dothan. This may include medical reasons, benevolent reasons, and other types of need. If you are accessible to be called to see if you are available at the time of need, please let Ed Wright know. You will do doing a great service. Guatemala Mission Trip / July 16-22 There are still some places available for this trip. The cost is $1600 but the church will help with up to half the amount. You will be touched. You will be on mission. You will see God at work. Call Ed Wright if you want more information. Reading Glasses Needed Remember to start getting reading glasses for the Guatemala mission trip. We can’t use prescription glasses but the “readers” are great. God is blessing our missions. Please continue to pray for them.

“A Healthy Church Has aMission’s Heart”

Matthew 28:19-20

From the Senior Pastor On a commuter flight from Portland, Maine, to Boston in 1987, the pilot heard an unusual noise near the rear of the small aircraft. Henry Dempsey turned the controls over to his co-pilot and went back to check it out. As he reached the tail section, the plane hit an air pocket, and Dempsey was tossed against the rear door. He quickly discovered the source of the mysterious noise. The rear door had not been properly latched prior to take-off, and it flew open. Dempsey was instantly sucked out of the jet. The co-pilot, seeing the red light that indicated an open door, radioed the nearest airport requesting permission to make an emergency landing. He reported that the pilot had fallen out of the plane and requested a helicopter search of that area of the ocean. After the plane had landed, the ground crew found Henry Dempsey holding onto the outer ladder of the aircraft. Somehow, he had caught the ladder, held on for ten minutes as the plane flew 200 mph at an altitude of 4,000 feet and then, at landing, kept his head from hitting the runway, which was a mere 12 inches away. According to news reports, it took airport personnel more than a few minutes to pry Dempsey’s fingers free from the ladder.

Are there values and biblical truths in your life that are worth holding onto with such white-knuckled intensity? Convictions that you not only believe but absolutely live by? Or is much of your ‘faith’ merely words and not reality? How committed are you to what you believe? I think the interaction of Jesus with his disciples after one of his most challengingmessages is very telling:

John 6:66-69 (ESV) After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

At that moment Peter made a commitment to hold onto Jesus and His words no matter what the world says, thinks, or does. Let us be that sort of people. Though the world will tempt us and the enemy asail us and life disappoint us, we will not let go.

Holding on to the One who holds me, Pastor Paul
