Artist of the week: Apolis Beginsel
APOLIS BEGINSEL and his ARTWORK-a brief history Apolis was born and raised in Calitzdorp, a small town situated on the R62, and part of the Little
Karoo. He began to draw and paint when he was seven years of age, and it has been a long walk to
become established as a recognized as southern cape and South Africa artist.
Originally he sold his work on the streets of George, Mossel bay, Knysna, Wilderness, Calitzdorp and
Cape Town. Eight years ago his work came to the attention of Prof.L Strydom, owner of the Strydom
Gallery, Riaan Bosch, and Hilton Nel, all international artists from South Africa. Recognizing his
latent skill they encouraged him to further develop his work by taking courses, and to keep his work
as original and unique as it was at that point.
The courses that he was able to attend paid dividends, and he was soon exhibiting his work at the Blue
Door Gallery, Zebra Gallery and the Calitzdorp Cellar in Calitzdorp, the Strydom Gallery in George,
Kalk bay Modern Gallery in Kalk Bay, and at the KKNK (the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees).
Apolis has also been featured on national TV, on national news, MooiLoop program, tourism and
paints, and the medium he uses. While portraits are a strong point, his subjects range from the
environment to daily object. Apolis says, "I paint locals from Calitzdorp, what they do, eat, their
houses, their lifestyles. They are my people. I use oil paint, acrylic paint, water paint, pastel and
pencil, using scrap metal, wood, hardboard, and canvas. My favorite colours are green, blue, purple
and orange. I love my art and any portraits order is welcome.

Calitzdorp
Calitzdorp is a town on the Western side of the Klein Karoo in the Western Cape Province of South Africa and lies on South Africa's Route 62.
The farm, on which Calitzdorp stands, was granted to JJ and MC Calitz in 1831. In 1924 a railway line was opened, in 1937 electrification and a
new cement road to Oudtshoorn was completed. The Swartberg (in the North), Rooiberge (to the South) and the Mountains of the Huisrivier Pass
(to the West) surrounds Calitzdorp’s challenging landscape with floods, droughts and extreme weather, from very hot to snow clad mountaintops in
the winter. Summers are very hot during the day, mainly a dry heat, up to 40 °C. Wind from the sea every afternoon allows for moderate, cool
evenings. Winters have sunny days, very cold nights with occasional frost and snow often falling on the surrounding Swartberg Mountain Range.
Rainfall is approximately 200 mm per year, often with the changing of seasons. Prevailing winds are mainly from the south in summer and hot wind
from the North in August. Calitzdorp is a haven for enthusiasts of fishing, bird-watching, 4×4 and other scenic routes, horse-riding and wine tasting.
Calitzdorp is renowned as a centre of the port wine industry in South Africa with several major wine estates famous for their award-winning
products. A Winter Festival takes place in the town in mid-June each year.

Venue: Church Street, Calitzdorp, in one of Calitzdorp’s oldest Cape--‐style cottages.
Cuisine: The chef, AnupBagasi’s, favourite dishes, tastes from the Indian continent to the continental
Europe. Chef Bagasi studied Culinary Arts at the Institute of Hotel Management in Hyderabad, India.
Local, seasonal produce will be used to create the food. The menu will change every week. No liquor
license, so bring your own, there is no corkage fee.
Ambience: Old world charm, seating inside the charming old cottage and outside in the beautiful back
garden. Food will be served in a quiet and quaint atmosphere under the Klein Karoo sky.

Dinner: Fri, Sat and Sun from 6pm till late, Lunch: Tue, Wed and Thu, 12pm onwards.

Pav Bhaaji: A Perfect mix of Indian and Portuguese cuisines, this starter is popular snack in Mumbai.
Vegetables well cooked in spices called 'bhaaji' topped with a dollop of butter, eaten with toasted
Portuguese bread called 'Pav'. Served with a fresh summer salad.
-Main course-
Kolhapuri Mutton: A spicy mutton dish in Kolhapur style, a region in the state of Maharashtra, known
for its famous mutton preparations with chillies, spices and coconut.
Paneer Makhni: Home made Paneer (Indian cottage cheese) cooked in a mild but flavorful tomato
based gravy.
Matar Pulao: Fragrant long grain Basmati rice cooked with green peas and spices.
-Dessert- Kubaani Ka Meetha: Hyderabadi sweet dish made from dried apricots. It was a dessert for the royalty
in Indian, introduced by Babur, the founder of the 500-year long Mughal dynasty in India. Served with

Bicycle Rentals at Tourism office Great news, another improvement developed at Calitzdorp Tourism, adding to
our growing list of contributions.
Calitzdorp Tourism offers bicycles for rental. Rentals are based on a hour to
hour basis. Very important with regards to returns: the office close at 17:00
from Monday - Friday and at 13:00 on a Saturday. We are closed on Sundays, but arrangements can be made in advance.
Our bikes come with a helmet. They are perfect for exploring the town. Forget about the traffic and enjoy the town sights at your own pace, while breathing in
the rich culture of Calitzdorp. Our bikes are also ideal for the more challenging
trips. If you’re interested in exploring Calitzdorp’s natural surroundings then this bike’s for you. Last but not least: when hiring equipment you’re required
to pay a security cash deposit in case of damage/theft and a copy of your
identity book/passport (we will make the copy).
