Message from the chair:
Mrs Moira Strauss
Dear Readers, Whether or not you've just enjoyed a holiday weekend, welcome back. As we head into June, we've got lots to share. To begin, there is the Calitzdorp Shoebox Project, an inspiring community initiative that co-ordinates the donation of personalized gifts at Christmas time to underprivileged children in Calitzdorp. Please participate in this profoundly valuable and personal experience. We would love to receive as many possible filled shoe boxes this year. Contact Erina or Jadé for more information at the Tourism Office.
Over the last couple of years, MTB stage racing has reached a new high with 2 or 3 day events becoming increasingly popular. With this in mind, Ecobound has developed the Rooiberger as a classic enduro MTB event during the long weekend in June. With various distances is there something for everyone and most routes are not too technically demanding. The aim is to involve all members of the family. The event will kick off with a 93km enduro at Calitzdorp Spa which will take riders over the winding Rooiberg Pass and through the Assegaaybosch Nature Reserve. Enter now for a wonderful experience. Enjoy this week's edition. Moira Strauss Calitzdorp Tourism Chair

Februarie, 'n jaar gelede vra my vrou my om 'n groot
draad hart vir Valentynsdag te maak. Eers was ek nie
Elke
item is uniek en word netjies afgewerk. Die ideale
geskenk vir binne of buite. Ons kan ook iets na jou
smaak ontwerp.

Bestanddele:
1 kg aartappels, geskil
en in blokkies gesny
750 ml water
Sout
750 g pere, geskil en in
blokkies gesny
125 ml suiker
125 ml asyn
100 g spekvleis (die
blokkies)
2 uie, in repies gesny
by.
Lewer 2 liter sop.

Brain Teaser of the
week
Three travelers register at a hotel and are told that their rooms will cost $10 each so they pay $30. Later the clerk realizes that he made a mistake and should have only charged them $25. He gives a bellboy $5 to return to them but the bellboy is dishonest and gives them each only $1, keeping $2 for himself. So the men actually spent $27 and the bellboy kept $2. What happened to the other dollar of the original $30?
The solution to this teaser will be in next
weeks news letter.

Who is Mahatma Gandhi?
Mahatma Gandhi 150 x 150
www.brainyquote.com
Mahatma Gandhi (born name Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) (October 2, 1869 - January 30, 1948) was the most prominent political and spiritual leader during the movement for India's independence in the 20th century. Although President of the Indian National Congress (1925-34), he never held government office. After early civil-rights activities as a lawyer in South Africa, Gandhi returned to India in 1914, where he became prominent in the opposition to British rule and was frequently imprisoned. By 1942, as independence for India drew near, he cooperated with the British despite his opposition to the partition of the sub-continent. In political terms Gandhi's main achievement was to turn the small, upper-middle-class Indian National Congress movement into a mass movement. In intellectual terms his emphasis was upon the force of truth and non-violence (ahimsa) in the struggle against evil. His acceptance of partition and his concern over the treatment of Muslims in India created enemies among extremist Hindus. One such, Nathuram Godse, assassinated him in Delhi in 1948. Widely revered before and after his death, he was known as the Mahatma (Sanskrit, 'Great Soul') . He was also known as "The Father of the Nation" and "Bapu"(father). "Gandhi Jayanti" is a national holiday celebrated each year in India on his birthday, October 2. In 2007, The United Nations General Assembly declared October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence

Red Stone Hills and adjacent properties are situated on the fringe of the semi-arid plains of the Little Karoo. The most important
habitats for birds include (a) the open karroid veld dominated by s tunted trees, mainly Gwarrie Euclea undulata, and low succulent
shrubs; (b) the dense thickets on the hillsides, where the rainfall is higher; (c) the fynbos which occurs on the summits of the hills
and where the Waboom Protea nitida dominates; (d) several permanent streams, lined by both indigenous and alien vegetation,
which transverse the area providing a habitat for birds that do not normally occur in this dry environment; (e) man-made habitats
such as the lucerne fields and poplar woods which support birds that would not otherwise enter the Little Karoo.
The best time for birders to visit the area is after substantial rains in spring and early summer. No bird check-list is ever complete
and the compilers would appreciate receiving information on additional species that have been positively identified.
BIRD OF THE WEEK Birds spotted at Redstone Hills and environs.
Names as used in Sasol – The Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds
of Southern Africa: 2nd
edition 2005.
ID: 62
Species: Grey Heron
Spotted: recorded January to December; breeds, resident.
The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), is a wading bird of
the heron family Ardeidae, native throughout
temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is
resident in the milder south and west, but many birds retreat in
winter from the ice in colder regions. It has become common
in summer even inside the Arctic circle along
the Norwegian coast.
.
Grey Heron
Description: It is a large bird, standing up to 100 cm (39 in) tall and measuring 84–102 cm (33–40 in) long with a 155–195 cm
(61–77 in) wingspan.[2]
The body weight can range from 1.02–2.08 kg (2.2–4.6 lb).[3]
Its plumage is largely grey above, and off-
white below. Adults have a white head with a broad black supercilium and slender crest, while immatures have a dull grey head. It
has a powerful, pinkish-yellow bill, which is brighter in breeding adults. It has a slow flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped).
This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks.
The call is a loud croaking "fraaank". The Australian White-faced Heron is often incorrectly called a Grey Heron. In Ireland the
Grey Heron is often colloquially called a "crane".
Food and feeding: It feeds in shallow water, catching fish, frogs, and insects with its long bill. Herons will also take
small mammals and reptiles. They occasionally take birds up to the size of a Water Rail.[4]
It will often wait motionless for prey, or
slowly stalk its victim.
City life: In the Netherlands, the Grey Heron has established itself over the past decades in great numbers in urban environments.
In cities likeAmsterdam, they are ever present and well adapted to modern city life. They hunt as usual but also visit street markets
and snackbars. They are also present at the zoo during feeding times for penguins, pelicans and seals. Some individuals make use of
people feeding them at their homes or recreational fishermen to share their catch. Similar behaviour on a smaller scale has been
reported in Ireland.[5]
Breeding: This species breeds in colonies in trees close to lakes, the seashore or other wetlands, although it will also nest
in reedbeds. It builds a bulky stick nest.

Welcome to the Rooiberger MTB weekend of racing!
Mountainbiking without limits...!!
ONLINE ENTRIES FOR 2013 are now OPEN!!
Event Date: 15-17 June 2013
Venue: Caltizdorp Spa
Over the last couple of years, MTB stage racing has reached a new
high with 2 or 3 day events becoming increasingly popular. With
this in mind, Ecobound has developed the Rooiberger, as a classic
enduro MTB event during the long weekend in June. With various
distances (93km, 45km, and 15km) is there something for everyone
and most routes are not too technically demanding. The second day of
the weekend will see an exciting time trial challenge over a distance of
32km. Other activities for the smaller members of the family will also
be available. The aim is to involve all members of the family to take
part in this event, as cycling has clearly become a family activity with
the introduction of 2 Trail Running distances as part of the weekend.
The event takes place at Calitzdorp Spa, in the Klein Karoo. The Spa
see most riders staying over for the weekend, as this is a
convenient start and finish for all the distances during the event and a
excellent venue and family resort
Saturday 1 will kick off with a 93km Enduro which will take riders over the winding Rooiberg Pass and through the Assegaaybosch Nature
reserve. Rooiberg Lodge offers an exciting spectator point on this route with various amenities available and a floating bridge. Other fun events are
available with distances of 45km and a fun ride of 15km. The 45km is an enjoyable and challenging route. The 15 km is for the youngsters of the
family, with the route staying in close proximity of the Spa.
Sunday 2 is the eventful and exciting time trial over 32km. In the afternoon there will be a X-Country race on a challenging track trough the resort.
This forms part of the Provincial X-Country series.
Monday 3 see the introduction of a Trail Run over two distances 17km and 7km.
With the Fuel Zone as entertainment area, suitably situated next to both hot and cold swimming pools, post race relaxing time is in abundance. Grab
a beer, beanbag and hotdog and relax to some live music! This promise to be an exciting and enjoyable weekend for all!

o Hope Options
Hi everyone,
Sorry we are a little bit late with our newsflash, but we still wish to encourage you with how your support and prayers have made a difference.
Thank you very much for your loyal support and steadfast prayers. (PLEASE SEE ATTACHED THE PDF FORMAT TO VIEW SOME OF THE
PHOTO'S OR SEND IT ON TO YOUR FRIENDS / FAMILY)
COUNSELING:
APRIL: 6 new and 10 follow-ups
Counseling was related to the following: Attempted Suicide, Abuse, Miscarriage, Alcohol addiction help, Family problems, Marriage Counseling.
God is always faithful and we were blessed to have this many follow-up appointments this month. One of our clients has committed to quit alcohol
abuse and is doing very well. The family situation has already improved and we are praying that they will stand firm and push through to the end.
YOUTH EVENTS:
We started off again with our youth evenings, One of the topics was on “NOISE” – everything is noisy around us – we have cellphones with
internet, facebook, sms, bbm, calls, etc. that‟s not even mentioning dvd‟s, television and music. We complain we can‟t hear God‟s voice, be we
don‟t get to a point of just SILENCE to really sit and listen. Everyone was challenged to make time in their “NOISY” days to have a SILENT date
with God.
SUPPORT GROUPS: We kicked off the support group for Courageous – but unfortunately there was a big funeral service at the same time where most of our attendees
were. We hope that they will be able to attend from June.
OTHER:
AWARENESS PROGRAM AT LOCAL CLINIC: We did awareness at the local clinic on Drug and Alcohol Abuse (especially focussing on TIK). We have already reached: 57 people. We also had
two new clients that now came to the centre for counselling since we started the awareness campaigns – Praise to God.
HOLIDAY PROJECT (with ACVV & Department Social Development): The ACVV launched the holiday project and we supported them together with the Department of Social Development. We did fabric painting,
painting rocks and the pre-cast walls of the sport field in Bergsig, with positive messages for the community. The children enjoyed it a lot and they
also learned new skills. We had the following attendance: 27, 19, 28, 20 on the different days.
FUNDING – THANK YOU!!: We wish to thank Community Chest, Department of Health and ALL our loyal monthly donors for their contribution to the centre. We are grateful
to take hands – together we can make a difference in our community. We know funding is very limited, but every little bit can make a big
difference.
PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray with us re: the Awareness Campaigns at the clinic, that people will come for counseling and support.
Please keep praying for our finances and thank you for praying for our volunteers, clients, board and management.
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS & PRAYER WARRIORS – GOD IS FAITHFUL!!

CALITZDORP NOT LOOKING FESTIVE ENOUGH
We received a number of complaints last year about the town not looking „festive‟ enough, also complaints about Calitzdorp not looking festive at
all until the last couple of days before the festival. I know that the Dream Project people are always working towards to improving Calitzdorp –
maybe we can all make an effort to help. Zelma also suggested colourful fabric flags in main streets of Calitzdorp. We have an extra banner
available this year – I am investigating putting it up in Oudtshoorn. Please let us have your input and ideas.

Prys was R60. Tel: 044 213 3314
De Krans Wine Cellar’s award-winning Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2009 was another wine from the Klein Karoo in the "Top 100". The De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2009 is produced using 62% Touriga
Nacional, 36% Tinta Barocca and 2% Souzão grapes, and was aged for 22 months in old French oak. Winemaker Boets Nel describes their flagship port as having a vibrant plum colour, with dense aromas of prune, spice and tobacco. This premium port displays fleshy, chewy mouthful of flavours, showing tannic grip, concentrated red fruit nuances, and a firm structure ensuring considerable longevity, with the potential to mature for a further 20 to 25 years. Retailing for approximately R240
per bottle, savour this premium port on its own, or serve with stronger cheeses. This vintage was awarded a 5-star rating in the 2012 Platter's South African Wine Guide, as well as walking away with the title Overall Champion at the 2011
Southern Cape Bottled Wine Show
For more information on the wines and ports of De Krans Wine Cellar, feel free to contact the cellar at 044 213 3314 or [email protected].
Axe Hill I am always happy to receive guests at the Axe Hill cellar but I am also not always there - so visitors looking to taste should email
me [email protected] or call me 083 676 3000 beforehand.
As for specials, we currently offer a 5 + 1 special for our vintage port bought at the farm - buy a case of 6 and we only will charge
for 5 and tastings are for free!

Mike
Boplaas
Boplaas again joins the “Top 100” list
Boplaas Family Vineyards in Calitzdorp are proud to announce that a wine once again has been included in the “Top 100” South
African wines of 2013. The host of international and local judges, award Boplaas a spot in the “Top 100” for the Boplaas Cape
Vintage Reserve Port 2010.
Crafted from a quartet of Douro varietals and in the traditional drier Vintage style; the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010
with its inky black colour, heady aromatic bouquet, intense spice and grippy tannins, will evolve in bottle over the next three
decades or more - for those who are willing to exhibit restrain. A part from being nominated in the “Top 100” 2013, this youthful
Cape Vintage Reserve received a double gold at Veritas in 2012 and 4 ½ stars in Platter Guide 2013. Best enjoyed decanted with a
selection of charcuterie, hearty venison dishes or after a meal accompanied with cheeses, dried fruits, nuts and preserves.
Apart from the stellar performance of Boplaas's Cape Ports, the table wines produced from the traditional Douro varietals offer a
glimpse into the future of this exceptional terroir, especially the Ring of Rocks (newly released 2011 vintage, an innovative blend of
Touriga Nacional, Merlot and Cabernet), the Boplaas Tinta Chocolat 2011 (rated as best red wine at the Cape Port & Wine
Challenge 2012) and Woolworth‟s Boplaas Portuguese Connection red blend.

Boplaas Family Vineyards – Tending vines & crafting wines, since 1880
Enjoy a little rest bit from the rush, with the
Boplaas’s Stoepsit Sauvignon Blanc
hen you think of the houses of the quaint Karoo towns dotted along
the Route 62 and beyond, one striking attribute that all share in
common is the presence of a “stoep” or wrap-around patio. These
“stoeps” serve as gathering places for friends, family and passers-by
where stories are told, problem are solved and where you can take
refuge from the day‟s toil.
To celebrate Boplaas‟s patriarch Ouma Roeline‟s 90th vintage, her
love of Sauvignon Blanc, the innumerable afternoons she‟s
entertained friends and family on her “stoep” and the joy this has
brought her, it is only apt that from this vintage the Boplaas
Sauvignon Blanc will be henceforth be bottled as the Boplaas
Stoepsit Sauvignon Blanc.
The first Sauvingon Blanc crafted at Boplaas was in 1982 and since then Roeline‟s son, Carel Nel, has each vintage attempted to craft the ideal
“stoep” companion for his mother and her friends. Along the line, Boplaas were the first to craft Sauvignon from high up in the Outeniqua range
at Ruiterbosch; experimenting with the Blanc Fumé wine style; crafting site specific Sauvignon‟s from exceptional coastal vineyards and have also
managed to craft back-to-back South African National Young Wine Show Champion Sauvignon Blanc in 2009 and 2010.
The Boplaas Stoepsit 2013 is an entirely affable Sauvignon with its zippy citrus, tropical fruit flavours and low alcohol level making it the ideal
partner to light fare, canapés, lazy sunny afternoon gatherings on the “stoep” or simply sipped on its own while enjoying another glorious African
sunset. The Stoepsit Sauvignon 2013 is available from the Boplaas cellar door in Calitzdorp and the Cool Bay tasting room in Groot Brak River
just off the N2 near Mossel Bay, for a pocket pleasing R35 per bottle.

call on 044-2133326, send us a mail [email protected], tweet us @Boplaas1880 or simply come visit us at our cellar door in Calitzdorp.

Saturday the 18th of May, weather prediction, dry and cool. Great for buying Andrew and Mara and Hennie's fresh veggies and something delicious to eat at the market. The Tourism bureau and the dream project will spoil you with boerewors rolls and plants for your garden. Avos from Buffelskloof. Alma Nel for the weekend cake and Meisie will have more pancakes this Saturday to keep up with demand. Homemade bread lovers are spoilt for choice, Blaine delicious white bread and real bagels, Mize - proper Portuguese bread made with olive oil, Pam a hearty sustaining brown loaf and Marina’s rye and kitke loaves. For the special gift, a wedding present or Big Birthday present what about some collectable? Blackie has a great collection of treasures. Flowers, fresh eggs, live chickens, cakes and bakes, cheese and woolie things for hands and feet. Botterbome and herbs and chillies, tea, coffee and hot soup, local olive oil, honey and dried fruit and nuts. The market aims to make shopping a pleasure. In a small village like ours many of us can cook, many cook very well and some very well indeed. Whatever kind of cook you are, good ingredients are a must. Our aim is to bring the best of local produce to the market and make shopping a pleasure. See you there.
Judy
Last Saturday was a story of flying cabbages, the stars of the market were Neels' and Erina's cabbages. The cabbages arrived at the market early, still covered in dew and they flew off the table before Erina was home, two blocks away! A second delivery took off with the same speed and we all hope for more of the same. What farmers, the Fouries, we salute you. This week the weather is predicted to be lovely. Have you tried Mize's chourico in frittata, bean stew or calde verde? or her bread, custard tartlets or chicken pies? Really traditional good food cooked with love and expertise and Portuguese passion, the kind of tastes that Vasco de Gama would have been homesick for. Fresh ripe olives for the home processor, Blaine's cheese, Sabine's fresh lemons, Margaret Potgieter's walnuts, avo's, persimmons and almonds. I hope more of Japie and Annemarie's Strelitzias and fresh eggs. Andrew's fresh rocket, 3 different varieties in one packet and herbs that make you wonder why bother with the dry stuff. For anyone inspired to grow anything do not leave without a bag of Hennie and Mara's kraal mis and maybe a huge handsome rooster. Kevin's plants, Nellis' veggies, Almond Acres almonds, Axehill olive oil, maybe Retief will have enough fresh figs. Pam and Marina and Wilna will have delicious baked stuff and Allan and Juanita and Meisie will keep you in things to eat and drink at the market. For your weekend cakes and sweets Alma and Ann are the stop to make and Joey van der Merwe's jewellery and Blackie's collectables for inspiration. Your support inspires us
till Saturday
