Message from the chair:

Mrs Moira Strauss

Dear Readers,

The Calitzdorp Tourism Committee, with

the help of various like-minded persons,

has been running the Dream Project for

just over a year, adding new features as

they have been requested. This project

initiated by Retief van der Walt and I, was

not undertaken for any status or income,

but something various

community/committee members did

together in their spare time for the

sole benefit of the town and it's people.

The committee would like to concentrate

on other important initiatives and therefore

request either a strongly

motivated individual / group with fresh

new ideas and strong managment skills to

take over or manage the project on their

behalf. The Tourism committee will assist

where and when they are needed, of

course. If you are interested please

contact Erina or Jade, as soon as possible –

thank you!

Enjoy this week's edition.

Dus is

4. WAT KAN EK AS INWONER DOEN OM HIERDIE STYGENDE UITGAWES TE BEKAMP? Ontleed eerstens maandeliks u munisipale rekening;

Maak seker dat u verbruik van water & krag streng op ‘n 30-dae periode aangeslaan word;

Skryf ‘n brief aan KM elke keer wanneer daar ‘n navraag op u rekening is;

Indien u agter raak met betalings, tref reelings met KM en kry dit op skrif;

Feit is u gaan elke

NEWSLETTER 2/2013

NEW MANAGEMENT Regardless of the fact that we had very little response on Newsletter 1/2013 where the future of the KRU was

questioned, a Special General Meeting was held on 19th June . At this meeting it was decided with an overwhelming

majority, that the KRU definitely had a right to exist. A meeting was agreed for the 10th July to elect a new

committee. Thanks to the excellent canvassing amongst residents, done by Juanita Beech , a record attendance

from within the whole community turned out. This attendance was even though it was school holidays with several

people being away.

The following persons were elected on the KRU management: Calitzdorp: Herman Botha, Mike Horan and Kim

Verlinde while Van Wyks Dorp elected: Mike Hewitt, Carol Hewitt and Pandora Alberts. Their official positions

shall be decided at a management meeting. In the meantime the retiring committee members, Bob Reinecke

(Chairman), Hennie Smit (Secretary/Treasurer) and Paul Grobbelaar, indicated that they will assist the new team

as consultants. We wish the new team all of the best with their task at hand. Thus, this will be the final

Newsletter put together by me. GENERAL MATTERS:

1. ENTREPRENEURS: The KRU wishes to congratulate Omar with the opening of his new Supermarket and

wish him the best of success for the future. It is indeed an asset for Calitzdorp residents and we are

aware of the long battle with KM to overcome all kinds of obstructions in a very uncertain economic

climate.

2. NEW MUNICIPAL TARIFFS: By now you are undoubtedly aware of the new tariffs effective from 1st

July. To ensure you pay the correct amounts we advise that you obtain a copy of the tariff schedule from

your municipal office.

3. BUDGET AND IDP: A copy of each of these documents can be obtained from KM where you will be able

to see their financial and other plans for Kannaland during 2013/14. The biggest concern contained in

these documents are the uncertainty of KM’s revenue and the fact that KM confirmed that they made no

effort to consider cost savings or make budget cuts during the budgeting process this year.

4. WHAT CAN I, AS A RESIDENT, DO TO COUNTER THESE RISING EXPENDITURE? The first thing is to do a monthly reconciliation of your municipal account statement;

Ensure that your consumption of water & power is strictly calculated over a 30-day period;

Write a letter to KM EVERY TIME you have a query on your account;

Should you have an arrears account, make arrangements with KM to settle, get it in writing;

This may sound like an awful lot of work but rest assured that it works!!! Protect yourself;

Contain your consumption to under the max tariff for water & power. This you can do in many ways

but eventually all households will benefit to re-use greywater and invest in solar panels, batteries

and converter. Start with lights, TV and gradually expand it annually. Fact is that every year you

will pay more for these services and it will pay to invest in greenpower. Do your own research.

o 5. Die Handelshuis – movie night

Die Handelshuis

Invites you to see a very special movie.

THURSDAY 1ST AUGUST* 6 for 6.30 pm.

Max & Mary

Animated Comedy Drama 2009.

Don’t be put off by the fact that this is an animated movie or by the unusual

storyline – this is a truly one of a kind movie and quite unforgettable…

“Two unlikely people. Two different worlds come together in a story about a most unusual friendship.”

In the mid – 1970’s, a homely, friendless Australian girl of 8 picks a name out of a Manhattan phone

book and writes to him; she includes a chocolate bar. She’s Mary Dinkle, the only child of an

alcoholic mother and a distracted father. He’s Max Horowitz, living alone in New York, overweight,

subject to anxiety attacks and a sufferer of Asperger’s Syndrome. Thus begins a 20- correspondence,

interrupted by a stay in an asylum and a few misunderstandings. Mary falls in love with a neighbour,

saves money to have a birthmark removed and deals with loss. Max has a friendship with a

neighbour tries to control his weight, and finally gets the dream job. Will the two ever meet face to

face?

A true story of two lonely individuals who become penfriends and who share a unique & original

take on life, totally hilarious and filled with human pathos – this is the most beautifully constructed

movie.

Brain Teaser of the week

You're in a room with two doors. There's a guard at each door. One

door is the exit, but behind the other door is something that will kill

you. You're told that one guard always tells the truth and the other

guard always lies. You don't know which guard is which. You are

allowed to ask one question to either of the guards to determine which

door is the exit. What question should you ask?

The solution to this teaser will be in next weeks news letter.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The solution to last weeks teaser: Answer:

3, 3, and 8. The only groups of 3 factors of 72 to have non-unique

sums are 2, 6, 6 and 3, 3, 8 (with a sum of 14). The rest have unique

sums:

2 + 2 + 18 = 22

2 + 3 + 12 = 18

2 + 4 + 9 = 15

3 + 4 + 6 = 13

The house number alone would have identified any of these groups.

Since more information was required, we know the sum left the answer

unknown. The presence of a single oldest child eliminates 2,6,6,

leaving 3,3,8.

Friday 9th

August

We will be starting off the exhibition on Friday 9th August with a talk hosted by Blackie Badenhorst on "The Women of Olifantsfontein" as a tribute to

women on womens day. These women potters, painters and other artists opened their "Ceramic Studio" at the old Cullinan brickworks at Olifantsfontein in

1926 and this remained active, with changes in personnel, for thirty years. The talk will be followed by refreshments, and the opening of the "Art on Track"

exhibition. Tickets are R50.00, which includes the entrance fee to the exhibition.

Saturday 10th

The exhibition opens at 10:00am and closes at 16:00pm. During the course of the day there will be art demonstrations, workshops and arts and crafts

displays. Food and drinks are available on site. There is an entrance fee of R10.00, which will be used to assist with the costs for artists involved in

demonstrations. While in Calitzdorp and between activities in the area, why not visit the galleries in town (Blue Door, Gallery Route 62, Smits Winkel,

Famous quotes

Quote:

Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.

Thomas Jefferson

Who is Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 (April 2, 1743 O.S.) – July 4, 1826) was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the third President of the United States (1801–1809). At the beginning of the American Revolution, he served in the Continental Congress, representing Virginia and then served as a wartime Governor of Virginia (1779–1781). Just after the war ended, from mid-1784 Jefferson served as a diplomat, stationed in Paris. In May 1785, he became the United States Minister to France.

Jefferson was the first United States Secretary of State (1790–1793) serving under President George Washington. With his close friend James Madison he organized theDemocratic-Republican Party, and subsequently resigned from Washington's cabinet. Elected Vice President in 1796, when he came in second to John Adams of theFederalists, Jefferson opposed Adams and with Madison secretly wrote the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, which attempted to nullify the Alien and Sedition Acts.

Elected president in what Jefferson called the Revolution of 1800, he oversaw the purchase of the vast Louisiana Territory from France (1803), and sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition(1804–1806) to explore the new west. His second term was beset with troubles at home, such as the failed treason trial of his former Vice President Aaron Burr. With escalating trouble with Britain who was challenging American neutrality and threatening shipping at sea, he tried economic warfare with his embargo laws which only damaged American trade. In 1803, President Jefferson initiated a process of Indian tribal removal and relocation to the Louisiana Territory west of the Mississippi River, in order to open lands for eventual American settlers.

A leader in the Enlightenment, Jefferson was a polymath who spoke five languages fluently and was deeply interested in science, invention, architecture, religion and philosophy, interests that led him to the founding of the University of Virginia after his presidency. He designed his own large mansion on a 5,000 acre plantation near Charlottesville, Virginia, which he named Monticello. While not a notable orator, Jefferson was a skilled writer and corresponded with many influential people in America and Europe throughout his adult life. ] He is rated by historians as one of the greatest U.S. presidents.

Jefferson opposed slavery all his life in his speeches and writing; but he took little political action to emancipate slaves, owned hundreds of his own, and freed only a fraction of these in his life and will. Since the beginning of his career, controversy has surrounded Jefferson concerning his relationships with his slave Sally Hemings. Owing to DNA and other evidence, the consensus of modern historians is that Jefferson fathered one or more of Hemings' children.

After Martha Jefferson, his wife of eleven years, died in 1782, Jefferson remained a widower for the rest of his life; their marriage produced six children, of whom two survived to adulthood.

Saterdagoggendmark

It is Aloe microstigma time, this really is Calitzdorp's Aloe. Have you got a few in your garden or in pots? They really show off well

in pots and thrive in captivity. We walked past a potted microstigma outside a house near the school with 8 buds snaking out of the

lovely blue green spotted leaves. Buy yours from the market, they are great for birds and go lovely red/orange colours in summer

when they withdraw their chlorophyll and hibernate.

Saturday will be cool and lightly cloudy but dry, so come and buy a warm hat from one of our really good knitters and with warm

head and ears and clutching a hot cup of tea or coffee or soup, browse till you have all you need, plus a treat or two. By the time you

have been up and down Tannie Johanna will have the next hat knitted. If you do not feel like cooking over the weekend, Sandy, Mize

and Anne will supply delicious things. Sandy's chicken blintzes are so good they make people close their eyes rapturously and

squeak! We had an avalanche of family visiting during the school holidays and Michael made an ostrich egg frittata with Mize's

chorizo; what a success. Anne has a wide variety of sweet and savoury baking, a sample of De Potpourri which is open during the

week for the unexpected guest or busy time. Rusks require time and patience, Pam puts that and more into her baking. What is that

midmorning coffee without a good rusk? It feels as if we have had a mild winter so maybe we are going to get all the cold weather in

the next few weeks, so buy some of Blaine's soft cheeses and make some fireside meals out of the ordinary. Maybe you could find a

good Italian cookbook at the market if your book luck is in. Sally is becoming the herb queen of Calitzdorp, not only food herbs but

medicinal ones as well. Anita bought a chervil plant from Sally and it is beautiful, lush and tastes lightly liquoricy - I will definitely

buy the next one I see. Must be great on fish. Talking of fish, Angel fish is really cheap in Oudtshoorn and it is delicious braaied but

Geoff Wyatt-Goodall says even better smoked. Also it is fish that is environmentally okay to eat. Blackie and Michael always have

something wonderful, real bargains like back copies of Aloe for R2. Rentia has gorgeous second hand clothes. Half my family

would not be seen dead in second hand clothes and the other half are dedicated second hand treasure hunters. Please pass the word

on to the second hand treasure hunters in your family, the market is the place to look. The weekend cake? Birthday or visitors -

where else but from Auntie Alma, her date loaf is astonishingly good value for money. The real reason to live in the platteland is

real fresh happy chicken eggs. Hennie and Mara have great eggs, the best lemons, crispy spinach, lemon curd and pickled lemons

and kraalmis and dry firewood. For anyone needing dry firewood in larger than market quantities why not contact Hennie Smit or

Nellis Oosthuizen directly. The market table will have ripe and nearly ripe avo's, Vernon Bassett's tomatoes, Nellis' wonderful

potatoes, Mimi's peas, Andrews broccoli and salad packs. Also Marina's bread and croissants, Mike Neebe's olive oil and Melinda's

honey. Sadly we have eaten all Erina and Neels' cabbages and cauli's but Erina has green fig preserve and dried peaches at really

good prices. We hope Thea's mushrooms will be available and welcome all growers who we may have overlooked to bring their

produce for us to sell. We hope Meisie will be back with pancakes and urge you to support the tourist bureau and the dream project.

We look forward to bringing you the freshest everything in Calitzdorp on Saturday

Red Stone Hills and adjacent properties are situated on the fringe of the semi-arid plains of the Little Karoo. The most important habitats for birds

include (a) the open karroid veld dominated by s tunted trees, mainly Gwarrie Euclea undulata, and low succulent shrubs; (b) the dense thickets on

the hillsides, where the rainfall is higher; (c) the fynbos which occurs on the summits of the hills and where the Waboom Protea nitida dominates;

(d) several permanent streams, lined by both indigenous and alien vegetation, which transverse the area providing a habitat for birds that do not

normally occur in this dry environment; (e) man-made habitats such as the lucerne fields and poplar woods which support birds that would not

otherwise enter the Little Karoo.

The best time for birders to visit the area is after substantial rains in spring and early summer. No bird check-list is ever complete and the

compilers would appreciate receiving information on additional species that have been positively identified.

BIRD OF THE WEEK

Birds spotted at Redstone Hills and environs.

Names as used in Sasol – The Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds of

Southern Africa: 2nd edition 2005.

ID: 68

Species: Yellow billed Egret

Spotted: recorded in August, visitor.

The Intermediate Egret, Median Egret,[2]Smaller

Egret[3] or Yellow-billed Egret(Mesophoyx intermedia) is a medium-

sized heron. Some taxonomists put the species in the

genusEgretta or Ardea. It is a resident breeder from east Africa across

the Indian Subcontinent toSoutheast Asia and Australia.

Yellow billed Egret

DESCRIPTION

This species, as its scientific name implies, is intermediate in size between the Great Egretand smaller white egrets like the Little Egret and Cattle

Egret, though nearer to Little than Great. It is about 56–72 cm (22–28 in) long with a 105–115 cm (41–45 in) wingspan and weighs c.400g

(14 oz),[4] with all-white plumage, generally dark legs and a thickish yellow bill. Breeding birds may have a reddish or black bill, greenish

yellow gape skin, loose filamentous plumes on their breast and back, and dull yellow or pink on their upper legs (regional variations). The sexes

are similar.

DIFFERENCES FROM GREAT EGRET

The non-breeding colours are similar, but the Intermediate is smaller, with neck length a little less than body length, a slightly domed head, and a

shorter, thicker bill. The Great Egret has a noticeable kink near the middle of its neck, and the top of its longer bill nearly aligns with the flat top of

its head. Close up, the bare skin of the Great Egret's gape line extends in a dagger shape behind the eye, while the Intermediate's is less pointed and

ends below the eye. The Intermediate tends to stalk upright with neck extended forward. The Great is more patient, often adopting a sideways-

leaning "one-eyed" stance.

DIFFERENCES FROM LITTLE EGRET

Little Egrets have yellow-soled feet and black bills. They often run after fish in shallow water. Breeding birds have long nuptial plumes on the

back of their heads.

BEHAVIOUR

The Intermediate Egret stalks its prey methodically in shallow coastal or fresh water, including flooded fields. It eats fish, frogs, crustaceans and

insects. It often nests in colonieswith other herons, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. Two to five eggs are laid, the clutch size

varying with region.

Droom projek

Are there any individuals or groups who would like to take over the running

of the DREAM PROJECT ?

The Calitzdorp Tourism Committee, with the help of various like-minded persons, has been running the Dream Project for just over a

year, adding new features as they have been requested. This project initiated by Retief van der Walt and Moira Strauss, was not

undertaken for any status or income, but something various community/committee members did together in their spare time for the

sole benefit of the town and it's people. The committee would like to concentrate on other important initiatives and therefore request

either a strongly motivated individual / group with fresh new ideas and strong managment skills to take over or manage the

project on their behalf. The Tourism committee will assist where and when they are needed, of course. If you are interested please

contact Erina or Jade, as soon as possible- thank you !

The Calitzdorp Port and Wine Festival was held in Calitzdorp recently and the committee will shortly be meeting to start preparing for the 2014 festival. We will need to assess the success or otherwise of this year's festival. We believe that some aspects of the weekend were more successful than others, but as the members of the committee were heavily involved with attempting to ensure that everything ran smoothly at all events we were not afforded the luxury of being able to stand back a little and take a more detached view of the proceedings. We have not prepared evaluation forms to assist in the assessment of the festival, however, we would welcome the views of everybody who attended any of the events during the weekend from the Friday evening in Calitzdorp to the Monday afternoon. The opinions of people who happened to take part in the festival are valid and very important to us. You can express your views on the venues, welcome, standard of performers and programme of events etc, either by contacting the festival office at 044 213 3725 or by sending your comments by e-mail to [email protected]. To assist, just state which event or events you attended. We look forward to receiving any constructive comments, praise or criticism.

Gallery Route 62 Coffee shop Besides my Black Velvet cakes with Ganache topping, and the perennial favourites, I will be baking something new and delicious each week to keep my local regular customers happy. I have yet to decide if it is going to be a surprise or if I should let you in to the treat in store on a weekly basis. I am also serving my own Delicious Hot Chocolate to warm you on those chilly winter days (

not that there appear to have been many). This month I hosted the first Birthday party with Baked German cheesecake, chocolate cake and savoury tarts. It was a great success and look forward to hosting more in the future.
