JAM v CAY Jamaica claims first victory KINGSTON, Jamaica, November 29, 2012. - Host Jamaica claimed their first victory winning over Cayman Islands in straight sets 25-7, 25-14 and 25-14 at the NORCECA Group E First Round Qualification for the FIVB 2014 Women’s World Championship. Jamaica defeated Cayman Islands looking well in their debut and dominating Cayman Islands that became stronger during the match.

beginning to secure one of the three spots available for next year’s round.

With 19 points, Shari Mathews and with 11 points Rhe-Ann Niles topped Barbados’

scorers. Jackie Toussaint was the best for Aruba with 6 points.

Thonya Joseph captain for the winning team said “we want to take one match at a time

and improve with each one. I believe we did pretty well to be our first match in the

tournament and we were unsure of what to expect from Aruba.”

“Our team is very young and this is our first time ever in an international tournament”

said captain for Aruba, Jackie Toussaint. “Nervousness took control of us and we will

try to do better” she added.

Barbados’ coach, Andrew Brathwaite indicated “we decided to focus on our side

because we have never seen Aruba play. This match gave us the chance to try

different combinations thinking ahead in the tournament”. He finished congratulating

Aruba and to keep practicing as it’s just their beginning.

“We definitely need to improve and Barbados took advantage of the numerous errors

in our receiving, now we’ll put our mind on the next match” expressed Igmar Ogenia

Aruba’s coach.

en tres sets perfila a

Barbados a encabezar

desde el principio el torneo

para asegurarse una de las

tres plazas disponibles para la ronda del próximo año.

Con 19 puntos, Shari Mathews y con 11 puntos Rhe-Ann Niles fueron las principales

anotadoras para Barbados. Jackie Toussaint fue la mejor para Aruba con 6 puntos.

Thonya Joseph capitana del equipo ganador dijo “queremos tomar un juego a la vez y

mejorar con cada uno. Pienso que lo hicimos bastante bien para ser el primer

encuentro en el torneo, además de que no sabíamos qué esperar de Aruba.”

“Nuestro equipo es muy joven y esta es la primera ocasión que participamos

internacionalmente” dijo la capitana de Aruba, Jackie Toussaint. “El nerviosismo tomó

control de nosotras e intentaremos hacerlo mejor” agregó.

El entrenador de Barbados, Andrew Brathwaite indicó “decidimos enfocarnos en

nuestro juego puesto que nunca habíamos visto jugar a Aruba. Este juego nos dio el

chance de probar deferentes combinaciones anticipándonos a lo que viene en el

torneo.” Finalizó felicitando a Aruba y a continuar practicando ya que este solo es el

inicio.

“Definitivamente debemos mejorar y Barbados tomó ventaja de nuestros numerosos

errores en el recibo, ahora pondremos nuestra mente en el próximo encuentro”

expresó Igmar Ogenia entrenador de Aruba.

claimed their first victory

winning over Cayman Islands in

straight sets 25-7, 25-14 and

25-14 at the NORCECA Group E

First Round Qualification for the

FIVB 2014 Women’s World

Championship.

Jamaica defeated Cayman

Islands looking well in their

debut and dominating Cayman

Islands that became stronger

during the match.

The top player for Jamaica with 11 points was Lecia Brown. For Cayman Islands, Anita

Lansdell scored 4 points.

Shedeiky Hamilton, Jamaican captain saw this as a practice match for them “we’ve

played against Cayman Islands so we knew we had the opportunity to perfect our

skills”.

Cayman Islands captain, Anita Lansdell said “we are hoping to build as each game

goes by; we have been practicing together for several months so things are

improving.”

Coach Gatashew Bonner of Jamaica indicated that five of his players play overseas and

they are adjusting to the team “this team is a mixture of experience and youth, we

just finished a practice camp to work together; there is still things to improve, like our

passing.”

Keith Higgins for Cayman Islands was proud of his team’s effort, “we played very well

against a more experienced team than ours, as I said before we are rebuilding.”

Caimán luciendo bien en su

debut y dominando a Islas

Caimán que fue mejor cada set.

La máxima anotadora por Jamaica con 11 puntos fue Lecia Brown. Por Islas Caimán,

Anita Lansdell anotó 4 puntos.

Shedeiky Hamilton, capitana de Jamaica dijo que tomaron esto como un juego de

práctica “ya habíamos jugado contra Islas Caimán así que sabíamos que esta era una

oportunidad para perfeccionar nuestras destrezas.”

La capitana de Islas Caimán, Anita Lansdell dijo “esperamos construir conforme pase

cada juego, hemos entrenado juntas ya por varios meses y las cosas están

mejorando.”

El entrenador Gatashew Bonner de Jamaica indicó que cinco de sus jugadores juegan

en el extranjero y están apenas adaptándose al equipo “esta es una mezcla de

experiencia con juventud, recientemente terminamos un campamento de

entrenamiento para trabajar juntas; aun hay cosas que mejorar, como nuestro pase.”

Keith Higgins de Islas Caimán se mostró orgulloso del esfuerzo de su equipo,

“jugamos muy bien ante un equipo mucho más experimentado que el nuestro, y como

dije anteriormente estamos reconstruyendo.”
