Success is measured in many ways, at Bonnydale Simmental Farms, product integrity, innovative delivery and investment in genetics form the core of our seedstock business. Quality and optimum productivity demands a continual commitment to every facet of a beef business and it has always been our belief that maternal excellence is paramount to achieving success. The success of our bull breeding program is driven by our cows.

We believe Bonnydale’s line-up of Black Simmen-tal donor females is second to none in Australia. These exceptional cows are backed by the similarly exceptional donor cows owned by Willie and Sharon Altenburg, ASR Simmentals, Colorado, USA. These cows will continue to provide the foundation for Bonnydale’s future success in delivering quality, industry leading genetics to our clients and the Aus-tralian industry.

Since the stud was established in 1974 we have had a strong focus on maternal excellence because we be-lieve that a successful seedstock business must have a strong foundation in order to produce superior sires for the industry. This maternal focus extends to our commercial herd and has been enhanced by the use of maternal hybrid vigour. The majority of our commercial herd is based on Simangus cows bred to Black Simmental and Simangus sires. The small number of Angus cows are bred to Black Simmental.

Maternal hybrid vigour has been recognised by the global beef industry for many years as having a strong correlation to overall herd productivity.

This is best communicated by Marty Ropp, former Director of Commercial Programs with the Ameri-can Simmental Association – Crossbred commer-cial cows are absolutely more productive and more profitable than straight-bred commercial cows. End of story! We more often hear emphasis and promotion of the direct effects of individual heterosis (hybrid vigour) and what it means to calf weights, because the effects are much more immediate and more easily quantified. By far the greatest positive effects of crossbreeding, however, are in the additional profitability it generates from the commercial cowherd. Research has repeat-edly shown the lifetime production value advantage of a crossbred female over her purebred counterparts of up to 25%.

The key factors driving the production advantages associated with utilising Simmental and Simangus maternal hybrid vigour are numerous. Improved cowherd fertility. Improved cow longevity. Exceptional maternal calving ease. Increased weaning weights. Lower mature cow weights (than Angus and Hereford) leading to more efficiency.

The combination of these effects contributes to a crossbred cow being more productive to the tune of an additional calf during her productive lifetime.

Maternal Hybrid vigour isn’t complicated or difficult to achieve and manage and doesn’t require any ad-ditional expense, it is a “FREE RIDE” and you don’t get many of them in the beef industry.

Few sires in the breed can match his combination of excellent performance, calving ease, maternal and carcase merit. At Bonnydale he has delivered on all this and more. His progeny a super quiet and his daughters are truly magnificent young cows producing very well. His Breedplan EBV’s and Selection Indexes are testa-ment to the performance of this sire.

Bonnydale Jasper F233

Jasper is an outcross sire that is used extensively as a backup to our AI programs. His sire is the high accuracy ES Kilowat KH19, a sire renowned for producing a consistent balance of maternal and carcase attributes. Jasper is a balanced sire that carries the Kilowat traits on to his own progeny with the added benefit of a very sound structure and temperament.

Bonnydale Georgia C219

Arguably the best Black Simmental cow in Austra-lia, she is an elite third generation donor and has become the cornerstone of the Bonnydale breeding program. Georgia has been genetically designed to enhance the Simmental breed, which in turn will produce progeny that will be beneficial to the advancement of the Australian beef industry. Georgia’s individual scan data is outstanding – at 18 months she weighed 632kg – Scanned 117cm EMA and 5.5% IMF. Georgia’s production record is unmatched and has produced numerous stud sire quality sons and elite donor quality daughters. Georgia is the dam of one time record priced Black Simmental bull at auction at $17,000.

Willie Altenburg purchased Jossie from Grass-Lunning Simmentals, Le Roy, Minnesota in the 2007 North American Sale in Louisville, Ken-tucky. Her first bull calf was ASR’s high selling bull in 2009. Jossie is a powerful cow who quickly earned the right to become a donor at ASR has now made her mark at Bonnydale producing top selling sons and high performance daughters. Her genetic predictability will ensure a strong legacy in the Bonnydale herd through her daughters but more particularly through her two sons who are important AI sires at Bonnydale they are Knoxville and Tanker H200.

Bonnydale Glendive C200

Glendive was the first calf born to our Black Sim-mental program in 2007. She quickly developed into an outstanding femi-nine female producing numerous quality progeny through ET. Glendive is a productive cow with predictable genetics and displays excellent structural soundness which she consistently passes on to her progeny. She remains an important donor in our ET program and has two daughters which have joined the donor program.

ASR Black Carlene is a well proven matron with uniqueness of pedigree being a Desperado out of a PPSR Nophalt cow. Black Carlene has a production record of 106 on 4 calves. She just doesn’t miss on her ability to raise a good calf. Extra length and depth of body would be the attri-butes that would best describe Black Carlene.

A beautiful young cow with a famous big sister, DR Built Like A Dream. The Ruth family sold Built Like A Dream for $60,000 in the 2007 North American Select Simmental Sale in Louisville, Kentucky. She has since gone on to be a prolific donor cow for Sanders Ranch in Kansas. With Willie Altenburg we had the opportunity to purchase MTTR Jenny from Mick Meiklejohn, Col-bran, Colorado for $10,000. MTTR Jenny will fit both programs very well with an outcross pedigree. She possesses tremendous depth of rib, correctness of feet and legs and beautiful femininity for her mass of body and muscle. Her EPD’s are near ideal and provide many mating possibilities for the production of embryos.
