Dear Cattle Producer,

It has been an interesting year for 2014. Never have we had so muchrain with such a poor hay crop. Timing is everything and there wesat with no rain for our hay and then got 6 inches in September.Along with the snow we have had, 2015 should at least have a goodstart.

The bulls are fed the CHS bull challenger pellet. We really like theway the bulls grow on this feed. They are at about 13 pounds ofpellets and grain per day but half is spring wheat this year. The wheatwas the right price and the protein is higher than in the pellet.

I would like to expand on my outlook on feeding cattle. Many of ourbuyers are on similar conditions which is dryland pasture with mod-erate to severe winters. I had a potential customer call and ask aboutwean weights. He didn’t like my numbers at first but he was on verydifferent ground. His cows stay on irrigated pasture for most of theyear and you can not truly compare the two straight across. Here ismy proof for such a claim:

My daughter, Lisa, and her husband moved to a small place this lastyear and her cows went with her. The breeding and genetics on thesecows is very similar to my herd. You could almost say it was the sameexcept they did use their own bull this year. The biggest difference was the green feed these cows where on most of the summer.Lisa and Mark’s cow production went from roughly the middle of our herd to around the top. I think looking at the difference inone year helps show what genetics can do for your herd. Cows need to be able to work in the conditions they are in with very littlesupplements and so do the bulls we grow and send out to work.

We hope you can join us sale day but if you can’t DVAuction will be broadcasting the sale. Last year, a few of our customers camea day or two before the sale and then bought the bulls online. They said that worked great and then they didn’t have to worry aboutweather or a heifer calving while they were gone all day. If weather is bad we may forgo sending the bulls through the ring but willuse the DVAuction videos that have already been taken. Bull viewing would still be available sale day. This would let everyone sitin the warm shop and buy bulls. We only plan on doing this if the weather is really bad. (Maybe like the -25 we had last year.) Wewill continue to take phone bids for anyone who may not have a fast enough internet connection but will not be able to attend thesale. Lastly anyone buying on the internet is more than welcome to the thank you dinner that night in Stanford. It is one of thebest parts of the sale for us when we get to visit with all our friends and customers.

Double B Catering will provide lunch in the shop at 11:30. We are happy to have them back for the second year and really appreciatetheir hard work. Coffee and rolls will be available all day out in the barn.

Genomic TestingGGP-LD

Genomic testing has become a promising new technology for evaluating breeding stock. We have applied it to our program indifferent areas to help you with your bull selections.What is the benefit to buyers?The GGP test was called the 50K and some might be more familiar with that name. What it does is improve the accuracy of a bullsEPDs. It does not improve the EPD itself. It is like having five calves entered for the bull. What testing has Hill’s Ranch done?We are testing all our young herd sires and will be doing any future sires. That gives us better direction for how to use a bull andwhat he will do. For this year’s, sale we tested only a select number of bulls in the sale. We would like to see how our customersrespond to the program and would appreciate feedback. It does add enough cost to each bull that we want to make sure of thepositive impact before significally investing in it.GGP-HD or GGP-LD? (That’s a lot of letters to remember.)Think of it as GGP. The HD (high density) is like the high definition on your TV and the LD (low density) is just a more affordableoption. The only time HD is required is for donor dams and AI sires. We use the HD on our herd sires. That way we can use themas AI sires if we wish to. We used the LD on the sale bulls this year. The bull’s updated EPDs are included in the book. What is DD?DD is a genetic defect called developmental duplication. For a good tuto-rial on this defect go to http://www.angus.org/pub/DD/DDInfo.aspx. Wehave read up on DD and do not feel it is a problem that will cause you tonot use a bull. The chance of having a problem from it is very small. Theindustry does need to keep an eye on it but the majority of cattle produc-ers will probably never see it. The herd sires we use that are known carri-ers of DD are Bon View New Design 1407, G A R Predestined and GWLucky Quarter 622X. EPD TERMS & ABBREVIATIONSBreed averages can be used as a benchmark to determine where an animal ranks within the breed as well as whether or not ananimal’s offspring will be suitable for a given set of environmental conditions.Calving Ease (CE): The average difference of unassisted births when used on heifers. A higher value indicates greater calvingease.Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s offspring. Expressed in pounds of birth weight. Used prima-rily as an indicator of calving ease.Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s offspring. Expressed in pound at weaning. Does not ac-count for variance in WW that are due to milk.Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s progeny. Expressed in pounds at one year of age.Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): The average ease of a bull’s first-calving daughters compared to daughters of a different sire.Milk (MILK): Expressed as pounds of calf weaned and reflect the avg. difference due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters.Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Expressed as pounds of calf weaned. Account for avg. differences from both WW direct aswell as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters.

CARCASS EPDsCarcass Weight (CW): Estimate average differences in carcass weight at a given age endpoint.Yield Grade (YG): In an effort to apply the same scale the industry uses in quantifying meat yield Percent Retail Cuts EPD isnow expressed as an YG EPD. As with all EPDs, YG EPD is expressed as a deviation. Unlike its predecessor, however, negativevalues are desirable. To use it, keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are a 1/3 of a yield grade better (lower) than a 0.0 YG EPD bull. If bullswith a zero EPD for Yield Grade sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a-.33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower).Marbling (MARB): The average difference in USDA Quality Grade in a bull’s progeny at a given endpoint. A numerical mar-bling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score.Ribeye Area (RIB): The average difference in ribeye area in a bull’s progeny at a given endpoint.

All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sirescenario. Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angusfirst-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters requiredto maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feedand sold grade and yield.Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows all offspring put on feed and soldgrade and yield.Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping re-placements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unitdifference between bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much abull is worth in compared to another.

Important disclaimer: DO NOT compare index values for purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed compositionsor purebreds with hybrids - our system (ASA system) was not developed to make valid comparisons among these groups. There-fore, you must first determine the breed and breed composition appropriate to your herd and use index values to compare ani-mals within that population.
