According to a recent survey, there are 3,727 synagogues in America … 40% are Orthodox, 26% are Reform, 23% Conservative.

That’s a lot of synagogues! What makes ours unique?

1. Ours is the largest Modern Orthodox congregation in the U.S.

2. Some synagogues have baby carriages, some have people in walkers ... none have the combination of both that we have.

3. The Chairman of the Board and the Chairman-elect of The Associated are members of our congregation.

4. One-quarter of the Executive Committee of The Associated are members of our congregation.

5. We are a synagogue where “coming out of the closet” means that someone just had a good l’chaim after davening.

6. At Beth Tfiloh, the Neilah service feels like a gospel service.

7. During Musaf on Rosh Hashanah we have a wine and cheese reception for our singles and young adults.

8. On major holidays we have a petting zoo for our children.

9. Once a month we have a Minyan Meyuchad for adults with special needs.

SPAIN TRIP - A Beth Tfiloh delegation participated in a unique and inspiring trip to Spain and Gibraltar this summer. They had an opportunity to retrace Jewish history as well as meet Jews living there today.

Block Party: September 20 Sisterhood volunteers are needed to direct recycling traffic.

Boscov’s Day Shopping Spree: Tuesday, October 20, Passes ($5, tax-deductible) are on sale for White Marsh or Westminster. Buy at the Sisterhood Gift Shop or from Rosalie Klotzman (410-484-3393) or Roz Kalb (410-486-3456).

Food and Game Day: Tuesday, October 27, 12 to 4 pm. Reserve quickly for Mah Jongg, bridge, or canasta. Organize your own groups. The $18 admission includes lunch, dessert, beverages, and a happy, carefree time. The Gift Shop will offer discounted wares; not necessary to be a shul member to charge purchases via the Sisterhood account. citizenship to serve in the Knesset. Rabbi Lipman, an educator, author, and community activist, lives in Bet Shemesh with his wife and four children. He has rabbinic ordination from Ner Israel Rabbinical College and a masters in education from Johns Hopkins University. He has been at the forefront of combating religious extremism in Israel and is a leader in efforts to create Jewish unity both in Israel and around the world. Free and open to the public.

Understanding Human BehaviorMR. PAUL BOLENBAUGH How do we explain human motivation for good or evil, for violence or peacefulness? Zach Azrael ‘15 named national Tikkun Olam awardee

Mazal tov to newly-minted alum Zach Azrael ‘15 on being named a 2015 Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards recipient for founding the Tutoring Outreach Program - TOP, in partnership with Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake and the US Dream Academy. Meir Program: Multi-Sensory Jewish Education

When Jennifer and Michael Sachs’ son, Zachary, was diagnosed with dyslexia like his two older brothers, they decided that they wanted to give him a Jewish learning experience that would meet his unique needs. “When we came to the realization that a regular Hebrew School program wasn’t a possibility for him, we decided to try to start our own program,” Jennifer says. And so they worked with Mrs. Zipora Schorr, Beth Tfiloh’s Director of Education, to create the Meir Program for children with language-based learning differences.

The Meir Program is taught by Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School alumna Jessie (Barthlow) Goldberg ’03, who holds a Master’s in Special Education from Goucher College. Morah Jessie’s extensive experience in working with people with language-based differences means that she

is able to expertly integrate each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) guidelines and ensure that their unique needs are met in her classroom. Her specialty is the Orton Gillingham teaching method, the multi-sensory approach to education used at the Jemicy School, where many of the Meir Program students attend the rest of the week.

“Every child deserves a Jewish education – each child can be reached in his or her own way,” says Mrs. Schorr. In response to the overwhelming positive response to the inaugural year, Mrs. Schorr adds, “We anticipate building on this year’s success and planning on the expansion

Every morning, just before the Shema, one passage’s imagery is so powerful that it has become a Chassidic song, used as the name of charities and even schools. But every morning at Beth Tfiloh we experience the words of this passage literally, and you can take part as well.

We read “a new light will shine on Zion” as the sun rises and shines through a giant glass eastern wall in the morning minyan. And the light of that rising sun illuminates some people who come to minyan to remember someone recently lost, and those who passed years ago. The people in the minyan can serve as a source of comfort and support for those facing a loss of their own. Returning to the minyan to mark the anniversary of a loss on the yahrzeit of a loved one honors that person’s life, and preserves the memory of the individual within the community.

That new morning light illuminates more than mourning, though. It is customary for a Bar Mitzvah to come to the Thursday morning minyan to have an aliyah, and perhaps leyn the Torah portion if able, a few days before their special Shabbat. This is often a low pressure, quiet family event, without fanfare or hype.

New parents come to name a baby, not waiting until Shabbat to so bless their newborn. A birthday, anniversary, or some other simcha is celebrated. While there is a nice breakfast after minyan during the week, those coming for a special reason often sponsor something a bit more elaborate, a very affordable way to remember, honor, and celebrate.

You don’t have to know Hebrew or how to daven; there are folks on both sides of the mechitzah that can help you, and joining in with “Amen”

is relatively straightforward. The daily minyan provides an environment which allows the community to share in an individual’s joy or sorrow, through which the individual gains comfort and strength, becoming a part of that community to help others. Beth Tfiloh is a huge community. You don’t all have to come every day, and if you did, frankly, I don’t know where you’d all sit. The chapel only seats 200. But coming for a simcha, a yahrzeit, or just when you want a little time to meditate, you and the minyan would benefit.

All this applies to the evening minyan as well. Although there is no Torah service, there is learning, with a short class given by one of our rabbis. Occasions and people come to mind and it’s a great place to put the day’s events into perspective.

In the evening or in the morning, every day or now and then, your participation in the daily minyan ultimately strengthens our community, whose strength can be at your side at an important time of your life, funneling that strength back to you. By doing this, by participating at whatever level we can, it ultimately allows us to fulfill the second half of the sentence I quoted above: “that we all will speedily merit its light.”
